Radical treatment of oral infection is not necessary before stem cell transplantation

A recent scientific study suggests that contrary to the conventional belief, oral infection has no association with the risk of patients that people developing serious infectious diseases within 6 months of undergoing stem cell transplantation.

During the study, researchers investigated to find out if oral infections are associated with infectious complications as well as mortality rate after stem cell transplantation.

Contrary to our assumptions, untreated oral infections had no connection with post-stem cell transplantation survival during the 6-month follow-up period. Another surprise was that they has no link with any serious infectious complications occurring during the follow-up period, said the lead researcher.

The process of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is used for treating cancers and other severe blood and autoimmune diseases.

Owing to long duration required for recovery of the human immune system following stem cell transplantation procedure, patients generally have a heightened risk of infections.

Oral infections in childhood may increase risk of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood

A new study has suggested that common oral infection in childhood is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis in adulthood. Atherosclerosis is a disease of the arteries characterised by the deposition of fatty material on their inner walls.

"The observation is novel since there are no earlier follow-up studies on childhood oral infections and the risk of cardiovascular diseases," said the researcher. More progressed oral infections and inflammations are known to be associated with several cardiovascular risk factors and disease risk in adults according to the details published.

Periodontitis in particular has been studied extensively, and currently, it is considered an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic vascular diseases. The treatment of periodontitis is also known to decrease cardiovascular risk factors.

The study was initiated in 1980 when clinical oral examinations were conducted. Cardiovascular risk factors were measured at several times. Cumulative exposure to the risk factor was calculated in both childhood and adulthood.

The signs of oral infections and inflammation collected in the study included caries, fillings, bleeding on probing, and probing pocket depth. There were no differences between the boys and the girls.

Thickening of the carotid artery wall indicates the progression of atherosclerosis and an increased risk for myocardial or cerebral infarction.

The researchers emphasise, in conclusion, "Oral infections were an independent risk factor for sub-clinical atherosclerosis, and their association with cardiovascular risk factors persevered through the entire follow-up. Prevention and treatment of oral infections are important already in childhood."

HONEY FOR ORAL INFECTIONS

Experts recommend treating mouth sores, cold sores and other oral infections with honey. Honey contains anti-inflammatory enzymes that destroy viruses and speed up the healing process. To effectively treat such sores, it is recommended that you apply unpasteurized honey directly onto the wounds four times a day. The healing process will take 43% less time compared to OTC ointments and creams.

Tooth cavities increase heart disease risk

Taking better care of your teeth can also help you lower the risk of heart diseases, suggests a new study.

The researchers have found that common oral infections which are caused by the bacteria in our mouth are linked to cardiovascular diseases.

The most common oral infections are cavities and periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which are chronic inflammatory diseases that slowly and steadily destroy the supporting structures of multiple teeth.

"Given the high prevalence of oral infections, any risk they contribute to future cardiovascular disease is important to public health," said senior author Thomas Van Dyke of the Forsyth Institute, affiliated with the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

Inflammation plays a major role both in oral infections such as periodontitis and in cardiovascular disease, the study noted.

"Unravelling the role of the oral microbiome and inflammation in cardiovascular disease will likely lead to new preventive and treatment approaches," Van Dyke said.

The (oral) microbiome refers to the totality of microorganisms in a body part-in this case the mouth.
For the study, the researchers reviewed current clinical evidence supporting a link between oral infections and heart disease and found that oral infections, particularly periodontitis, and stroke, especially among men and younger individuals, are tied.

However, the researchers cautioned that certain over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs can produce significant cardiovascular side effects, which means it is crucial to consider alternative therapies.

"New discoveries of natural pathways that resolve inflammation have offered many opportunities for revealing insights into disease pathogenesis and for developing new pharmacologic targets for the treatment of both oral infections and cardiovascular disease," Van Dyke pointed out.

The study appeared in the journal Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism.
