Reversing heart disease naturally: The 21-day lifestyle plan from a leading cardiologist

Heart disease is still the leading cause of death worldwide, but what if one of the world’s top cardiologists told you it was possible to greatly improve your health naturally in just 21 days? Renowned cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra, along with an award winning health campaigner, developed a science-backed approach on lifestyle changes that support cardiovascular health without any medication. In the Ultimate Human Podcast with Gary Brecka, Dr. Malhotra shares how heart health can improve drastically within 21 days if a person follows the steps outline below.

The motivation behind this approach

Dr. Malhotra’s journey within the NHS began when he faced a concerning paradox: patients admitted with heart attacks were being served unhealthy hospital food, while he performed emergency procedures. This sparked his lifelong commitment to advocating for nutrition and lifestyle as foundational to heart health. In a 2013 BBC article, Dr. Malhotra said, “ I mend hearts. Then I see my patients served junk food by our hospitals.” This troubling trend persists worldwide, which explains why heart disease is still on the rise.

Why are women more at risk for heart disease?

He emphasizes that modern medicine has often overlooked the simple power of foods, exercise, stress management and sleep.

While medications such as statins are widely prescribed, Dr. Malhotra notes their benefits are marginal compared to lifestyle changes, which can rapidly improve heart health and overall well-being.

The 21 day heart health reset

Dr. Malhotra’s 21-day solution provides actionable, sustainable steps to reset your metabolism, reduce inflammation and protect your arteries. The core principle is adopting a low-carbohydrate Mediterranean-style diet focused on whole, minimally processed foods: vegetables, nuts, seeds, virgin olive oil and lean proteins.

The advises avoiding sugar, refined carbohydrates, fruit juices, and ultra-processed foods for at least 3 weeks. This phase helps stabilize blood sugar, lower triglycerides and improves insulin sensitivity- all key factors in reducing cardiovascular risk.

Motion and exercise

Physical activity is another pillar of the reset. Dr. Malhotra recommends a daily brisk walk of 30 minutes. The goal is consistent movement, not extreme gym workouts. Regular walking improves blood flow, aids weight control, and enhances heart and lung function, forming a foundation for cardiovascular longevity.

Meditation for reducing stress

Stress is a major contributor to heart disease and meditation, especially Rajyoga meditation, plays a vital role. Studies suggest it may even reverse artery blockages by reducing inflammation and calming the nervous system. Spending time each day on mindful breathing limits stress hormones that damage blood vessels, helping prevent heart attacks and strokes.

 Sleep and quality recovery

Sleep is often underestimates but crucial for heart health. Dr. Malhotra recommends 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. Proper rest regulates blood pressure and inflammation, aiding the repair and maintenance of the cardiovascular system.

Beyond diet and exercise: Building a healthy environment and habits

While personal responsibility is important, Dr. Malhotra stresses the need for an environment that supports healthy choices. Junk food marketing and the easy availability of processed meals often work against individuals. He advocates for systemic change alongside individual lifestyle shifts.

He also notes that approximately 67% of what many people consume daily falls into the highly processed category, which typically contains additives, preservatives, colourings, and flavour enhancers.

Thumb rule to check processed foods:

If a product has more than 5 ingredients, it is likely ultra-processed and best avoided. Dr. Malhotra emphasizes that mounting scientific evidence links an ultra-processed diet to increased risk of diseases such as cancer, depression and overall mortality.

Scientific evidence and impact

Dr. Malhotra’s approach is grounded in research. Meta-analyses and clinical trials confirm that reducing carbohydrate intake, cutting sugar and adopting a Mediterranean diet significantly lowers heart disease risk markers within weeks. Stress reduction techniques also have anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular benefits.

He further notes that cholesterol alone is an incomplete marker of heart disease risk. Insulin resistance, triglycerides, inflammation, and lifestyle factors are stronger predictors- and all ae modifiable through diet and lifestyle changes.

Tips to get started today

Eat real food: fill your plate with vegetables, healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts and moderate protein. Avoid sugary drink, sweets and processed snacks.

Daily walk- Aim for a brisk 30-minute walk every day.

Meditate- Spend 20-40 minutes a day practising focused breathing or Rajyoga meditation to calm the mind and heart.

Sleep well- Maintain a pattern that allows 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night.

Dr. Malhotra’s message is one of hope and empowerment: heart health is not about pills or procedure. It’s about embracing a lifestyle that allows your body to heal and function as it was designed to.

10 Easy Changes To Help You Lose Weight

We all know that being overweight can cause serious health problems. Many of us don't always have the time to exercise and that, in part, leads to the high obesity rates we see in the western world. At the moment, adult obesity rates in western countries has climbed to record levels, passing 25% of the population - that's one in four people!

According to the CDC, being overweight can lead to many potential health issues:

Coronary heart disease
Type 2 diabetes
Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
Dyslipidemia (high cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
Stroke
Liver and gallbladder disease
Sleep apnea and breathing problems
Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of the cartilage and bone within a joint)
Gynecological problems (abnormal periods, infertility)

What many people don’t know is that by making ten minor changes in your daily routine, you can start losing weight quickly

1. Don’t stress
Stress is the enemy of caloric-burn. A stressed body reduces the amount of calories it burns and changes the way it metabolizes food. A recent research at Ohio State University showed that women who report stress burn an average of 100 calories less than women who weren’t under stress. Consider doing Yoga, as it both helps you relax and burn calories.

2. Stay cool
Keeping the room temperature between 16–25 °c (62-77 °f) forces your body to burn calories in-order to warm up. If you drink cold water, you’ll burn 25% more calories than if you drink room-temperature water.

3. Drop the mid-morning snack for a mid-afternoon one
Most nutritionists recommend splitting your meals into smaller ones throughout the day. The Journal of the American Diabetic Association reports that a recent study found that a mid-afternoon snack works better than a mid-morning snack when trying to lose weight.

4. Use your non-dominant hand when you eat
By switching hands, you’re more likely to eat less - a finding reported by the University of Southern California. The reason is that much of our hunger and eating is based on habits. By breaking these habits we become more aware of what we’re doing, and reduce the automatic eating patterns we've developed.

5. Sniff a banana or a green apple
Yup, don’t eat them, just sniff them! The smell of bananas and green apples suppress appetite just like how sizzling steak or fresh bread awakens it. Scientists aren’t sure why it happens, but the common theory is that taste is 90% smell, so smelling food confuses the body into thinking it’s been eating.

6. Do your exercise in the morning
A research in Brigham Young University found that women who exercise in the morning are less hungry and more physically active. However, the hunger-suppression effect only lasts while the body temperature is high (which happens when you exercise), so you should also perform small workouts throughout the day (take the stairs, walk home, etc.) to maintain a higher body temperature.

7. Eat with men
Women tend to be more self-conscious around men, leading them to eat less by an average of 100 calories.
8. “Low Fat” is a lie
The University of Cornell found that, on average, people will eat 50% more food if it’s labeled “low fat”. The researchers believe that it’s a psychological effect – you see a food is “healthier”, so you feel you can eat more of it. When you see a product with “low fat” or “diet” written on it, eat it as if it’s full fat and you’ll start shedding away your weight.

9. Get prunes in your diet
Eating 5-6 prunes a day helps you lose about 4.4 lb (2 kg) in 12 weeks. This was found by the University of Liverpool, and the researchers are speculating that the weight is lost thanks to “increased bowel activity”, but without any adverse effects. So, add prunes to your diet, your body will thank you for that.

10. More proteins
Proteins take longer to break down compared to carbs and fat, forcing the body to increase its metabolism rate by 20%. The slow digestion also means you get full faster and stay full for longer periods of time. So add an egg, a piece of chicken or fish, or some lean beef to your meal - it will give you plenty of protein, with a diet that doesn’t feel like a diet!

5 easy remedies for bloating

Bloating is an extremely common symptom today. And admit it, it tends to slow down your day-to-day activities and negatively affects the way you look at your body. However, with a few changes in your diet, you can prevent or reduce bloating. Bloating can be primarily prevented by taking care of your gut health. Here are 5 ways to reduce and prevent bloating:

Maintain your gut health
A lot of us already know about this one. Improper digestion, constipation, bloating and fatigue are all the symptoms of a poor gut health. You can go for probiotics (yogurt is the best source for probiotics), and whole foods to keep your gut healthy. A clinical nutritionist suggests reducing your alcohol intake, and not drinking more than one cup of coffee a day. Also, avoid processed, packaged, sugary, fatty foods.

Mindful eating helps
We know how we gulp down or just devour our meals without properly chewing. It’s essential to slow down, and chew well, because proper digestion starts in your mouth. Relax, sit down, and enjoy your food. Try focusing on its aromas and flavours. The more connected you are to your food, the more satisfied you feel with every bite.

Try not stressing
High levels of adrenalin and cortisol, the stress hormones, can result in a shutdown of your digestive system. Go for exercises that lower your stress levels to relax and prepare your body for a meal. You can try different things, from yoga and deep breathing to walking amidst nature. Make sure you take at least 20 minutes to do so.

Supplements
Supplements that give you the essential vitamins and nutrients can be taken. In particular, look for components like fennel seeds and turmeric, both of which are known for reducing bloating. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and is also an antioxidant that supports liver health. Consult your doctor if you’re pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Try eating a gluten or dairy-free diet
Gluten and dairy have often been pin-pointed as major reasons for bloating. Try eating a gluten or dairy-free diet for two to four weeks, and see if it suits your body. A lot of people reportedly feel good, and have noticed that their gut health gets better. Eliminating gluten sometimes leads to high energy levels.

How to Control High Blood Pressure during Pregnancy?

Do you know that approximately 10-15% of women have high Blood Pressure during pregnancy?  In how many forms does high blood pressure occur during pregnancy? High BP can sometimes even cause severe health complications for both mother and developing baby. Women who had high blood pressure before pregnancy are at higher risk for related complications during pregnancy than those with normal blood pressure.

A blood pressure that is greater than 140/90 mm Hg, or that is 15 degrees higher on the top number from where you started out before pregnancy, may be cause for concern. Here we will tell you about these forms and methods to control high BP in pregnant women.

High BP during pregnancy manifests in 3 different forms

1. Chronic High BP

It is a condition when woman has pre-existing high blood pressure or high BP before she gets pregnant. It is usually treated with blood pressure medication. Doctors also consider hypertension that occurs in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy to be chronic hypertension.

2. Gestational High BP

It develops after the 20th week of pregnancy. It usually resolves after delivery and the most common complication is induced labor. When diagnosed before 30 weeks, there’s a higher chance it will progress to pre-eclampsia.

3. Chronic High BP with Superimposed Pre-eclampsia

This situation arises when a woman has hypertension before she becomes pregnant and even experiences protein in her urine or additional complications as her pregnancy progresses.

Home Remedies to Control high BP in Pregnancy

1. Exercise

Exercise during pregnancy helps make the delivery easier, manages pain better and helps with pregnancy based fatigue.
30 min of exercise will help your body to remain healthy and help your immune system become stronger. Not to forget that exercise relaxes the muscles, tones your body and regulates blood flow.

2. Limit Sodium Intake

During pregnancy hormones are extremely imbalanced which hurts your immune system and also lowers the efficiency of your body’s natural functions. This means processing and digesting salt or salty foods becomes much more difficult and if the salt isn’t digested properly or is excessive in your diet, it can cause a spike in blood pressure.

3. Avoid Junk Food

Junk foods are packed with preservatives which is extremely unhealthy. It is better to avoid them when you are pregnant to remain healthy and control your blood pressure.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Consuming one tablespoon of ACV every day with a glass of warm water and honey is one of the healthiest ingredients which maintain a balanced cholesterol level. Not only this, but it also balances your blood pressure. Consuming unpasteurized ACV is considered extremely healthy. Though, undiluted ACV can be extremely acidic and can burn your oesophagus or food pipe and even damage your stomach.

5. Eat a Healthy Diet

Follow a healthy and nutritious diet rich in magnesium, potassium, vitamins and calcium. Include bananas and magnesium rich foods like avocados, tofu, almonds, soy milk in your diet.  Magnesium helps manage extreme blood pressure levels and maintains the integrity of the uterus during pregnancy by preventing from contracting prematurely. Eating 1-2 bananas daily is not only a digestive aid and natural laxative but also rich in potassium. Thus helps in maintaining a healthy blood pressure during pregnancy.

6. Avoid Stress

Anxiety, depression, and stress are the main cause of high blood pressure. Pregnant women’s must listen to music for 30 min for at least 3 times a day. Slow music is recommended which is relaxing and soothing. One must practice prenatal yoga and prenatal massages to manage stress. Always remember high-stress levels leads to high BP.

7. Say No to Smoke

Quit smoking when you are pregnant as the harmful effects of smoking is four times more during pregnancy.  It can lead to weight gain, cancer, anxiety, high BP and depression.

8. Limit Alcohol

Avoid alcohol as much as you can as it can lead to several complications during pregnancy. Still if it is hard for you to avoid then 10 ml of wine a month is advisable.

9. Avoid Caffeine

It is one of the major causes of high BP. Therefore, it is advisable to limit or quit caffeine to maintain a normal BP.

10. Be Positive

Just let go of the worries and keep a smile on your face. Be positive and stay away from negative people. It will help you in maintaining a healthy BP. More positive you are, more positive and happy your baby will become.
