Different Ways in Which Music Affects your Brain

Music has been scientifically proven to have an impact on the human brain. There's also evidence that different types of music affect our brains in different ways.
 1) Music releases dopamine into your brain. The chill you get as you anticipate a crescendo in a piece of music you love is caused by the pleasure chemical, dopamine, which regulates your mood.
2) Music activates the entire brain- MRI research shows that listening to music activates the auditory, emotional, motor and creative areas of the brain.
3) Music alters the brain's structure. Brain plasticity evolves as we learn, therefore non-musicians have a lower brain cortex volume than amateur and professional musicians.
4) Listening to music as you exercise boosts performance. It helps to draw your attention away from the physical exertion you make when exercising. It means that you don't feel fatigue as readily, because your mind is partly focused on the music.
5) We've an emotional attachment to favourite music. Although we spend most of the time listening to newer music, our longer-lasting musical preferences are made throguh memory associations or emotional attachments.
6) Our heartbeats mimic music. A study found that music modulates our heart rate, blood pressure and respiration.
7) Mood music affects as to how we perceive the world. Listening to feel-good music actually tricks your brain into feeling good, while sad music can make feel downbeat and reflective.
8) Your brain sometimes keeps singing after the music stops. A 'ear-worm' or ' brain itch' is the phenomenon we experience when we can't get a song out of our heads. Sometimes the auditory cortex of the brain feels the need to fill in a gap in a song's rhythm.
9) Music therapy helps Parkinson's and stroke sufferers. It triggers neuron networks into organized movements that can help overcome problems relating to motor skills and speech. For this reason, music therapy is often prescribed by doctors for Parkinson's and stroke victims.
10) Music improves our reasoning and motor skills. Studies have shown that children who have had 3 + years of musical training perform better than average in tests of their motor skills, reasoning and even vocabulary knowledge.

Paracetamol in pregnancy may affect child development


Long-term use of paracetamol during pregnancy may increase the risk of behavioural problems, poor gross motor skills and poor communication skills in children, a new study has warned.

Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is the most commonly used medicine in pregnancy, yet there are very few studies that have investigated the possible long-term consequences for the child.

The new study from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health used data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study to investigate the effect of paracetamol during pregnancy on psychomotor development, behaviour and temperament at 3 years of age.

Almost 3,000 sibling pairs were included in the study.

By comparing children who were exposed to paracetamol during pregnancy with unexposed siblings of the same sex, researchers could control for a variety of genetic and environmental factors, in addition to other important factors such as infections, fever, use of other medications, alcohol intake and smoking.

The study found that children who had been exposed to paracetamol for more than 28 days of pregnancy had poorer gross motor skills, poor communication skills and more behavioural problems compared with unexposed siblings.

The same trend was seen with paracetamol taken for less than 28 days, but this was weaker.
To investigate whether the underlying illness could be the cause of the effect on the children, and not paracetamol itself, the researchers examined a different type of analgesic with another type of mechanism of action (ibuprofen).

The researchers did not find any similar long-term effects after use of ibuprofen.

"The results strengthen our concern that long-term use of paracetamol during pregnancy may have an adverse effect on child development, but that occasional use for short periods is probably not harmful to the foetus," said Professor Hedvig Nordeng at the School of Pharmacy, University of Oslo.

"Importantly, we cannot assume that there is a causal relationship between maternal use of paracetamol during pregnancy and adverse effects in children from an epidemiological study.

"Since this is the only study to show this, there is a need for further research to confirm or refute these results," Nordeng said.

The study was published in the International Journal of Epidemiology.

Watching activity video may boost your brain power

Watching video of simple tasks before carrying them out may boost the brain’s structure, or plasticity, and increase motor skills, according to a new study.
Brain plasticity is the brain’s ability to flex and adapt, allowing for better learning. The brain loses plasticity as it ages.
For the study, 36 right-handed healthy adults participated in 40-minute training sessions five times a week for two weeks. Half the group watched videos of a specific task, such as writing with a pen, cutting with scissors or handling coins, then were asked to complete the task themselves.The other half watched videos of landscapes and then were asked to complete the same tasks.
At the start of the study and again two weeks later, the groups were tested for strength and hand skills, and also underwent 3-D MRI brain scans. Scientists looked at brain volume changes in both groups.
The study found that the group who completed the training along with watching the activity videos had 11 times greater improvement of motor skill abilities, mainly in terms of strength, compared to those who watched the landscape videos.
“Our study lends credence to the idea that even as an adult, your brain is able to better learn skills just by watching the activity take place. With a dramatic increase of videos available through mobile phones, computers, and other newer technology, this topic should be the focus of more research,” said study author Paolo Preziosa, with San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy.
“The results might also contribute to reducing disability and improving quality of those who are impaired or who are undergoing physical rehabilitation,” Preziosa said. The study will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
