Blessed Neem, A Medicinal Plant, most useful for various diseases

According to ancient myths, Indra – the king of Celestials – bestowed neem with its incredible power while returning to heaven on a sacred white elephant after retrieving a golden pot of ambrosia from the demons. He spilled the ambrosia on a neem, making it a tree blessed with virtuous qualities that could remove all diseases. In another story, insects are said to be the creation of evil demons, and neem protects people from them by weakening the insect’s life patterns.

In yet another myth, the Sun God Surya is said to have been sought refuge from demons in a neem tree. That tradition is reflected in a belief among some Hindus that anyone who plants three neem trees lives after death in Suryalok (Sun World) for three epochs and never goes to hell.

Ancient Indian astrologists also placed neem in a prominent position, associated with the constellation ‘Uttara Bhadrapada’, whose presiding deity is Abibudhanya.

Some of the earliest writings known to man focus on medicinal herbs and the healing properties of plants. The Vedas, the oldest of the Hindu sacred texts and the basis of the Ayurvedic tradition, detail the use of neem as a medicinal herb. Brihat Samhita, the ancient text written by Varahamihira (505 AD) and sometimes called “the encyclopedia of Indian Culture,” includes a chapter on medicinal herbs that highly recommends neem.

The names given to neem also reflect its value in ancient society. In Sanskrit, neem is translated as “nimba” and becomes the basis of an ancient saying “nimbati ivasthyamdadati,” or “Neem, to give good health.” Another ancient name is “Sarvo Roga Nivarins” – or “the curer of all ailments.”

Thousands of years later, neem still plays an important role in healthcare and religion in many Indian households to such a degree that it’s almost “cradle-to-grave” healthcare insurance. For instance, families often bathe new-born babies in water that has been boiled with neem leaves because of its medicinal and refreshing qualities. In South India, when a mother leaves a baby, neem leaves near the baby for protection. Thousands of Indians use neem twigs to brush their teeth every day (a tradition recognized by the Indian subsidiary of international giant Unlived that created a neem-based toothpaste).

Another ritual called the “Ashwatta Narayana Puja” is used by couples who want to conceive a child. They perform a “marriage” of neem and the banyan tree and go around these seven times every morning for seven days.

Other ventures may start by propitiating Lord Vigneshwara to remove obstacles and for the smooth completion of the event. For the Siddhi Vinayaka Puja twenty types of flower are offered at the feet of the Lord, including neem flowers.

At funerals, the Puranas urge that family and friends chew neem leaves to protect against lingering infections, and spread more leaves at the threshold of the house where the death occurred – a tradition based on neem’s healing powers and dating back to the days when many people died in epidemics.

Rural residents of India have a festival called “ghatashapana” in which neem leaves are used to sanctify the water-pot. The Gamits of Gujarat offer neem juice to God, and then cattle and lastly take it themselves.

Many Hindus around the world still celebrate the New Year or ugadhi or Chaitra Vishnu, which comes in March/ April when the Sun enters the sign of Aries, by eating the bitter leaves of neem with a little jaggery to symbolize acceptance of the good with the bad. The tradition also signals the beginning of a season when neem is to be used regularly, since the period after the onset of the New Year is the season when Pitta dosha is aggravated.

As per the Ayurvedic tradition, Neem helps to keep Pitta in check.

Even Mahatma Gandhi was a believer in neem. Prayer meetings he conducted at the Sabarmati Ashram were held under a neem tree and a neem leaf chutney was a part of his everyday diet.

Turmeric Should Be Avoided When Taking Certain Medications or Having Certain Health Conditions

Turmeric root is one of nature’s healing plants and has been used for its taste and health potential for thousands of years. However, turmeric powers should be wielded with caution, as it isn’t appropriate for all people. Are you one of the people who should avoid or restrict the consumption of turmeric? Read on to find out.

Turmeric Has Powerful Healing Properties

Turmeric’s health-promoting qualities have been touted for generations by a wide-reaching group of people, from the ancient peoples of India and Asia to modern health gurus.

Many people can experience improvements in health by using ground turmeric in food or as a dietary supplement, but it’s not the right choice for everyone. Let’s discuss some situations where turmeric should be avoided or used sparingly.

When You Should Avoid Turmeric (Or Reduce Its Consumption)

People on medication for diabetes

Turmeric has a natural tendency to lower blood sugar and as such it is one of the top 8 spices and herbs for type 2 diabetes. For people with diabetes and pre-diabetic people who control their condition solely through diet this may be welcome news.
However, people taking medication for their diabetes need to be aware of turmeric’s effect on blood sugar and discuss turmeric usage with their prescribing physicians before continued use as when combined with medications for diabetes, turmeric might make blood sugar too low and cause hypoglycemia.

Pregnant women and turmeric consumption

During pregnancy and breast-feeding turmeric is considered safe when taken in amounts usually found in food. However, turmeric is probably unsafe when taken in large amounts or in a supplement form during pregnancy, as it may stimulate menstruation or stimulate the uterus, thus risking the pregnancy.
Also there is not enough information regarding the safety of large amounts of turmeric during breast-feeding, so it’s best to use it in normal food quantities and not as a supplement.

People with gallbladder problems or tendency for kidney stones

The gallbladder is a small sac-like structure which lies beneath your liver and connected to it by the bile duct. The gallbladder serves as a storage facility for bile which breaks down fat in the intestines.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), turmeric can cause side effects and increase the risk of gallbladder problems, so if you have gallstones or obstruction of the bile passages, you should talk to your doctor before taking turmeric.

Also if you are prone to kidney stones you’re better off not taking turmeric supplements. The reason for that is that turmeric contains significant amounts of the chemical oxalate, which increases the risk of gallstones.

A study published in May 2008 showed that turmeric significantly increased the levels of oxalate in the urine as compared to placebo after four weeks of treatment in healthy individuals.5 The conclusion was that high levels of oxalate in the urine increases the risk of kidney stone formation in susceptible people.

People who take blood clotting medications

Turmeric can thin the blood, meaning it can be inappropriate for people who have bleeding disorders as it can increase their risk of bruising and bleeding.

According to doctors, turmeric can also interact with medications that slow blood clotting such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Talk about your desire to take turmeric with your doctor before using it if you are on medications for blood clotting or have bleeding disorders in order to determine if turmeric is the right choice for you.
It is recommended to stop using turmeric at least 2 weeks before a surgery to avoid extra bleeding during and after surgery.

People who suffer from stomach acid

Our stomach is full of acid that is naturally produced in the body and helps break down food.
However excess stomach acid can cause symptoms like pain and other health problems such as heartburn (reflux) which occurs when stomach acid leaks into the esophagus. Frequent heartburn suggests gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can damage the esophagus and throat. Reducing excess stomach acid is the best way to manage these problems.

Turmeric may increase stomach acid production, which may decrease the effectiveness of drugs used to reduce stomach acid. Avoid taking turmeric if it worsens symptoms of stomach acid.

How Much Turmeric to Consume

According to doctors, for people who do not have medical or health conditions on the cautionary list discussed above, taking up to 3 grams of powdered turmeric root (which is about one teaspoon) per day is safe, while the dosage of cut root is 1.5 to 3 g per day for an average-sized adult.

What’s good about turmeric is that you can use it both in fresh or ground form. The ground form is much more concentrated, and usually when converting fresh to ground turmeric, a single tablespoon of fresh turmeric root is equal to 1/3 of a teaspoon of dried turmeric.

Ideas for Turmeric Consumption

While turmeric is a powerful and effective compound for treating a wide range of diseases, studies have revealed that turmeric has low absorption and rapid metabolism that lead to relatively low bioavailability in the body.

Depressed? Turmeric Lemonade Will Help Beat the Blues

No matter who you are, there is no guarantee of avoiding depression for the whole of your life. So, if and when this unfortunate affliction does strike you, you’ll want to be prepared. That’s why we’ve put together the perfect turmeric lemonade recipe that utilizes a marvelous ingredient known to help combat depression. Read on to learn how this delicious drink can help, then save the recipe so you can make it all by yourself.
Depression
Depression is a fairly loose term used to describe a negative mental state which leaves people feeling very low. However, there are a whole range of other symptoms that can vary from person to person. Depression of some kind is considered fairly common, affecting over 15 million Americans every year. But most sufferers are able to get past their troubles if they rely on support or treatment from the right sources.

Severe depression can destroy lives, and it’s for this reason that we must all be on our guard to catch the blues and deal with our problems head-on, when they first surface.

Depression’s varied signs and symptoms include the following:
•    Sadness, anxiety, or feelings of emptiness
•    A sense hopelessness
•    Feelings of guilt
•    Irritability or restlessness
•    Fatigue and loss of energy
•    Poor concentration and decision making
•    Insomnia or prolonged sleep
•    Considering or attempting suicide

Turmeric's Healing Powers
Although we may be tempted to seek medication for depression, unless recommended by a doctor, this may not be the wisest choice, since all medications have side-effects of some kind. The commonly prescribed drug, Prozac, has seen some very worrying side-effects that you will want to avoid. The worst being: stomach bleeding, difficulty breathing, and increased suicidal tendencies.

What you can do instead is make use of some of mother nature’s own spices that themselves work like wonder drugs. One such is turmeric, a marvelous spice that can aid in the fight against many different diseases such as: skin cancer, stomach disorders, arthritis, diarrhea, liver disorders, and jaundice.
Some of the health benefits of turmeric include:
•    Antioxidating properties
•    Anti-inflammatory benefits
•    Boost brain power
•    Reduced chance of heart disease
•    Helps combat depression

According to research, turmeric contains the ingredient curcumin, which has the same anti-depressant effects as Prozac’s chief ingredient fluoxetine, but turmeric does not cause any side-effects.

WARNING:  Please consult with your doctor before taking turmeric in combination with any other medication.

Making this drink could be just what you need to help put yourself in the positive frame of mind that says, ‘I can do this without drugs!’

5 Animals That Possess Incredible Healing Powers

All animals are capable of taking care of themselves, thanks to natural defenses which ensure their survival. Now more than ever before, scientists are studying a wide variety of animals to see if they can learn anything from their different health mechanisms. While the topic is extremely vast, the following five creatures, through scientific research, have been found to possess incredible healing powers that can rehabilitate and treat human illness.

1. Dogs
Healing Ability: Dog saliva has been found to heal wounds. The movement of a dog's tongue can loosen debris on the surface of a cut.
Backed By Science: Researchers discovered a protein called Nerve Growth Factor in  dog's saliva. They applied this protein to wounds and found that cuts and grazes that have been treated with NGF heal twice as fast as untreated wounds.
2. Snakes
Healing Ability: Protein found in the venom of a Malayan pit viper can be used to treat strokes and prevent blood clots.
Backed By Science: While getting bitten by this extremely venomous snake is far from ideal, their venom has been found to be very effective when it comes down to treating dangerous illnesses. Ancrod, a protein found in the Malayan pit viper's venom, can dissolve stroke-causing blood clots for as long as six hours after the first symptoms of a stroke have begun. At the moment, the venom is being used in Europe to treat patients who suffer from deep-vein thrombosis, and to prevent problematic blood clots from forming during surgery.

3. Cats
Healing Ability: Through their deep purring, cats have the ability to mend broken bones.
Backed By Science: Frequencies of 20-50 Hertz help speed up the healing process of bone injuries. Therefore, feline purring vibrations, which range from 20-140 Hertz, have the power to help heal soft tissue injuries to ligaments, muscles and tendons.
4. Bees
Healing Ability: Bees are the backbone of our ecosystem, providing us with multiple food sources. Their pollen is the perfect food, containing almost every nutrient that is required by the human body.
Backed By Science: Bee pollen is rich in proteins, minerals, vitamins, fatty acids, and bioflavonoids, which are anti-viral, anti-bacterial and help to lower cholesterol. Fresh bee pollen also contains at least 20 amino acids that help build healthy cells.

5. Household Pets
Healing Ability: Household pets have been found to raise immunities in babies.
Backed By Science: Babies who encounter pets during their first six months have much lower chances of developing allergies and asthma. Children with pets are also a lot less likely to get colds and ear infections during their first year.

The healing powers of onion

The onion is a staple ingredient of a whole variety of dishes around the world. It also offers a wealth of health benefits that most people don't know about. Its medicinal qualities have been recognized for centuries and it has been used for its healing powers by a number of cultures and civilizations.

There are many good reasons why onions should be used as part of your diet. Studies on its nutritional value have concluded that they have a number of health benefits and are effective in:

Lowering your susceptibility to Colon Cancer
Lowering your susceptibility to Prostrate Cancer
Lowering your susceptibility to Stomach Cancer
Helping your sleep patterns and improving your mood
Providing strength and structure to your skin and hair

Onions can easily be incorporated into a wide variety of dishes. Eating onions just two or three times a week can make a big difference. However, including them in your diet is not the only way you can use onions to positively affect your health. They have a number of medicinal and healing properties that can be used to fight various ailments. We fully expect some of them to surprise you!

Which Properties of an Onion Make It Such an Effective Healer?

Onions contain a compound called Quercetin which has both strong anti-bacterial properties and the ability to fight harmful toxins. It is a powerful antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and can lower cholesterol levels. The densest concentration of Quercetin is found in the outer rings nearest to the bulb's skin as well as the part of the onion that is closest to the root. This goodness is found in both red and white onions, and both types can be used as part of these natural remedies.

1. Onions can Heal Cuts
Onions are effective in the treatment of cuts to the skin. If you nick yourself with a knife cutting one, apply a slice of the onion to the injured area immediately. The raw onion will prevent infection and clean the wound. Next, take a piece of the onion's skin and place it over the top of the wound, sealing it with an adhesive. You will find that the bleeding stops quickly and the wound looks clean. If you have a larger cut or graze, use gauze to fix a piece of onion over the top of it. You can keep the onion on the wound for as long as required, just make sure you change the gauze regularly.

 2. Onions Can Lower a Fever
While it may sound odd, putting an onion in a sock is a surprisingly successful means of lowering your body temperature when you are suffering from a high fever!

Chop up some potatoes and slice an onion in half. Put one half of the onion into one sock, and the other half into the other sock (and add some potato slices in each of the socks as well). Next, put the socks on your feet - ensure that the mixture is pressed against your soles. You should find that your temperature lowers in a relatively short time.

3. Onions Can Cure an Earache and Help Remove Wax

An onion's anti-inflammatory properties make it a powerful defense against earache and it can also be used to soften ear wax, making the wax easier to remove. If you are suffering from an earache, chop up an onion, take the inner part (that is the hard section at the 'heart' of the onion) and place it in your ear for remedial relief. You will achieve best results by implementing the procedure shortly before you got to sleep. If you are someone who suffers from regular, excessive wax build-up, then you might want to perform this trick regularly.

4. Onions can Fight the Common Cold
One of the oldest recognized uses of an onion is its employment as a weapon to fight the common cold. If you feel you are developing the tell-tale signs of a coming cold (sniffles, sore throat etc) then raid your cupboard for an onion. It is most effective when eaten raw, and you should try and eat a whole one (perhaps chop it up and mix it in a salad to make it more palatable). Alternatively, boil the onion and use it alongside ginger and honey to make a tea. It will raise your defenses and help you fight off the cold.

5. Onions Can Sooth Burns

Onions are incredibly effective in soothing small burns and the recipe for doing so could not be simpler. If you have burnt yourself in the kitchen or garage, simply take half a chopped onion and apply it directly to the wound. Hold it in place for a few minutes and the pain should quickly start to ease.

For further relief, whip up two or three egg whites in a bowl and use them to cover the affected area. Hold the mixture in place using a breathable bandage for a natural, protective layer that will quicken your recovery.

6. Onions can Provide Cough Relief
The use of onions as part of a cheap, effective cough remedy is another practice which dates back centuries. It is best employed with a few other basic ingredients and there are a couple of things you can try.
Firstly, peel a red or white onion, and cut it into large slices. Layer the slices in a sealable jar and place brown sugar on top. Close the lid of the jar and let it sit for some time (around 6 hours is optimum). A syrup will form in the jar. Take a spoonful of the syrup as regularly as needed. The brown sugar makes the syrup more palatable and the resulting mixture does not taste too bad. Re-make the syrup every couple of days, replacing the old mixture with the new.
If you want an alternative, pour honey over the sliced onion instead of the brown sugar (use both if you have a particularly sweet tooth). Add a sprinkling of grated garlic for an extra health boost.

7. Onions Can Remove Eye Irritation
An onion's ability to remove eye irritants is derived from its most widely known feature - its ability to make our eyes water when chopped. This is a great property if you need to flush out an unwanted bit of dirt, a pesky fly or any other small irritant before it turns your whole eye red. Simply chop an onion and let nature takes its course! Make sure you don't touch your eye after chopping the onion though - that will add to your pain. Wash your hands thoroughly before you do so.

8. Onions Can Fight Insect Stings
Here is where the antihistamine properties of an onion come in handy. If you got stung by a bee or wasp, then a bit of crushed or grated onion applied directly to the skin can be extremely beneficial for pain relief.

The antihistamine will prevent an allergic reaction while the anti-inflammatory qualities of the onion will reduce any associated swelling. Keep the onion in place until the pain has subsided by using a breathable bandage that you should replace regularly.
