The Fantastic Health Benefits of the Pear

The pear is one of the tastiest fruits you can find, but more importantly – it is packed to the brim with health benefits. This fruit was domesticated over 3,000 years ago, though some speculate that the pear and human history have been intertwined since the Stone Age.

Throughout history, pears were among the most celebrated kinds of fruit. In Homer’s Odyssey, it is said that “the pear is the gift of the gods”, while in the court of French King Louis XIV, the pear was considered to be a luxurious delicacy. Nowadays, one can find this marvelous fruit in stores year-round, and despite that, it still remains a gift from the heavens for many reasons.

What makes it so great? pears, health

Pears are an excellent source of fiber, containing 3 grams of fiber per 100 grams of fruit. The fibers are soluble, which makes the fruit beneficial for your bowels and able to reduce high levels of bad cholesterol in the body. An 8-year-long study tested 51,000 middle-aged women and found that a high-fiber diet reduced the risk of breast cancer by 34%. In addition to the fibers, pears also contain plenty of vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants. What pears don’t have, is cholesterol, sodium, saturated fats, and nearly no calories (50 kcal for a medium-sized pear)

The pear’s health benefits
1. Lowers high blood pressure – Pears are rich in antioxidants and anti carcinogens, which help to reduce blood pressure.

2. Cancer prevention – High levels of vitamin C and copper protect your cells from free radicals. Additionally, the pear’s skin contains glutathione – a powerful anti-carcinogen.

3. Reduces cholesterol levels – Thanks to a high concentration of soluble dietary fibers, pears are able to reduce LDL levels. Most of the fiber is found in the pear’s skin.

4. Colon health – Aside from cholesterol, dietary fibers also help regulate your colon and keep its lining healthy.

5. Natural cure for constipation – Pear juice is a natural remedy for constipation.

6. Lower fevers – Pears have fever-reducing properties, especially when juiced.

7. Boosts the immune system – The antioxidants in pears are powerful boosters of the immune system.

8. Anti-inflammatory – Pears contain several anti-inflammatory substances.

9. Great for pregnant women – Pears are rich in folic acid, which is vital for the development of the fetus’s nervous system.

10. Slows down calcium loss – Pears are loaded with boron, an element that helps the body retain calcium and slow down calcium loss.

11. Keeps the throat healthy – The skin is rich in pectin, which can be helpful in cases of sore throats, by clearing phlegm and relieving coughs.

12. Hypoallergenic – If you suffer from allergies, pears are the perfect fruit for you, as they are hypoallergenic. This makes them one of the best fruits to give to a baby when he or she starts eating solid food.

Here’s how to add pears to your meals:

Breakfast
– cut it into yogurt and enjoy.

On the road – eat it fresh, just don’t forget a paper towel.

In salad – pears go particularly well with green, leafy salads.

For guests – pear and apple slices, served with an assortment of cheeses, make for a healthy and interesting appetizer.

A few last tips

The pear’s skin is rich in dietary fibers, so don’t discard it.

For the highest concentration of antioxidants, eat the pear only when it’s ripe.

When picking pears, choose ones that are firm, have smooth skin, and show no signs of bruising.

When they’re ripe, pears will spoil quickly, which means that if you buy them in a shop, they are probably still not fully ripe yet.

To hasten the ripening process, keep them at room temperature. Once they are ripe, keep them refrigerated.

To delay the ripening process, put the pears in a brown paper bag.

Pears oxidize faster when cut. To stop them from turning brown, squeeze lemon or orange juice on the exposed flesh.

10 Health Benefits of Apricots

Apricots can be enjoyed in a wide variety of ways, and every culture has a unique way of enjoying this delicious fruit. One of the reasons that they are so popular is because they have been directly linked to a number of health benefits, which are due to the nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and organic compounds that they contain. Below you can find 10 amazing health benefits of the humble apricot.

1. They Are Good for Constipation
Apricots are extremely rich in fiber, making them helpful for smooth bowel movements. They are often recommended to patients who regularly suffer from constipation due to their laxative properties. Fiber adds bulks to the stool, making it easier for it to be transported through the bowels. Furthermore, fiber activates the peristaltic motion of the digestive tracts, and those smooth muscles are what keep your bowel movements regulated.

2. They Improve Bone Health
Apricots have a number of minerals that are necessary for healthy bone growth. Calcium, manganese, iron, copper, and phosphorous all play a certain role in the creation of bone matter. Therefore, consuming apricots on a regular basis can ensure the healthy growth and development of your bones, as well as preventing various age-related conditions such as osteoporosis.

3. They Improve Heart Health
Apricots are a great way of protecting your heart from a wide variety of health issues, such as heart attacks, strokes, and atherosclerosis. The high percentage of vitamin C, as well as potassium and dietary fiber, all contribute to good cardiovascular health. Vitamin C helps protect the heart from free radicals, potassium lowers blood pressure, while dietary fiber scrapes the excess cholesterol from the lining of the vessels and arteries, thereby cleaning them and reducing the strain on the heart.

4. They Can Reduce Fevers
Apricot juice is often given to patients who have a fever as it provides the necessary minerals, vitamins, calories, and water for the body to fight off high temperatures. Some people also used steamed apricots to relieve fevers.

5. Apricots Balance Fluid Levels
Fluid levels throughout the body are dependent on two minerals, sodium, and potassium. The high percentage of potassium in apricots has been linked to maintaining fluid balance in the body, and ensuring that energy is being properly distributed to the right organs and muscles. By maintaining a healthy balance of electrolytes, you will have more energy and less cramping.

6. They Can Cure Earaches
Apricot oil is great for earaches. Dripping a few drops of this oil into the affected ear canal should prove to a be a quick remedy. Scientists believe that it has something to do with the antioxidants that are present in apricot oil.

7. They Help Prevent and Treat Anemia
Due to the presence of copper and iron, apricots help in the formation of hemoglobin, treating and preventing anemia in the process. Anemia occurs due to a lack of iron, and it can lead to fatigue, weakness, lightheadedness, digestive issues, and general metabolic function. Without red blood cells, the body cannot reoxyggenate itself properly, and organs begin to malfunction. Iron is an important component of red blood cell formation, as is copper. Both of these minerals are found in apricots, making it a great tool to keep the body functioning properly.

8. They Can Treat Skin Disorders
Apricot oil is great for skin care. It’s quickly absorbed by the skin and does not leave the skin looking oily after it has been applied. Apricots are just handy for maintaining the smooth and shiny appearance of the skin, they can also treat a number of skin conditions such as eczema, scabies, and itching. This is due to the antioxidant compounds that are found in abundance within apricots. These antioxidants protect the skin from free radicals, which can lead to skin deterioration and signs of premature aging.

9. They Prevent Cancer
Apricot seeds are believed to aid in the treatment of cancer. Between the carotenoids and the other antioxidant compounds that apricots have, it’s no surprise that they are a threat to free radicals. Free radicals are the byproducts of cellular metabolism that can cause healthy cells to mutate their DNA into cancerous cells. Antioxidants neutralize these harmful compounds and ensure that cancer does not start to grow.

10. They Help to Treat Asthma
Apricot oil is anti-asthmatic in nature and helps to treat the disease and its related symptoms. IT has certain expectorant and stimulant qualities due to its essential oils. One of these can help relieve pressure and stress on the lungs and respiratory system, thereby preventing asthma attacks.

The healing powers of onion

The onion is a staple ingredient of a whole variety of dishes around the world. It also offers a wealth of health benefits that most people don't know about. Its medicinal qualities have been recognized for centuries and it has been used for its healing powers by a number of cultures and civilizations.

There are many good reasons why onions should be used as part of your diet. Studies on its nutritional value have concluded that they have a number of health benefits and are effective in:

Lowering your susceptibility to Colon Cancer
Lowering your susceptibility to Prostrate Cancer
Lowering your susceptibility to Stomach Cancer
Helping your sleep patterns and improving your mood
Providing strength and structure to your skin and hair

Onions can easily be incorporated into a wide variety of dishes. Eating onions just two or three times a week can make a big difference. However, including them in your diet is not the only way you can use onions to positively affect your health. They have a number of medicinal and healing properties that can be used to fight various ailments. We fully expect some of them to surprise you!

Which Properties of an Onion Make It Such an Effective Healer?

Onions contain a compound called Quercetin which has both strong anti-bacterial properties and the ability to fight harmful toxins. It is a powerful antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and can lower cholesterol levels. The densest concentration of Quercetin is found in the outer rings nearest to the bulb's skin as well as the part of the onion that is closest to the root. This goodness is found in both red and white onions, and both types can be used as part of these natural remedies.

1. Onions can Heal Cuts
Onions are effective in the treatment of cuts to the skin. If you nick yourself with a knife cutting one, apply a slice of the onion to the injured area immediately. The raw onion will prevent infection and clean the wound. Next, take a piece of the onion's skin and place it over the top of the wound, sealing it with an adhesive. You will find that the bleeding stops quickly and the wound looks clean. If you have a larger cut or graze, use gauze to fix a piece of onion over the top of it. You can keep the onion on the wound for as long as required, just make sure you change the gauze regularly.

 2. Onions Can Lower a Fever
While it may sound odd, putting an onion in a sock is a surprisingly successful means of lowering your body temperature when you are suffering from a high fever!

Chop up some potatoes and slice an onion in half. Put one half of the onion into one sock, and the other half into the other sock (and add some potato slices in each of the socks as well). Next, put the socks on your feet - ensure that the mixture is pressed against your soles. You should find that your temperature lowers in a relatively short time.

3. Onions Can Cure an Earache and Help Remove Wax

An onion's anti-inflammatory properties make it a powerful defense against earache and it can also be used to soften ear wax, making the wax easier to remove. If you are suffering from an earache, chop up an onion, take the inner part (that is the hard section at the 'heart' of the onion) and place it in your ear for remedial relief. You will achieve best results by implementing the procedure shortly before you got to sleep. If you are someone who suffers from regular, excessive wax build-up, then you might want to perform this trick regularly.

4. Onions can Fight the Common Cold
One of the oldest recognized uses of an onion is its employment as a weapon to fight the common cold. If you feel you are developing the tell-tale signs of a coming cold (sniffles, sore throat etc) then raid your cupboard for an onion. It is most effective when eaten raw, and you should try and eat a whole one (perhaps chop it up and mix it in a salad to make it more palatable). Alternatively, boil the onion and use it alongside ginger and honey to make a tea. It will raise your defenses and help you fight off the cold.

5. Onions Can Sooth Burns

Onions are incredibly effective in soothing small burns and the recipe for doing so could not be simpler. If you have burnt yourself in the kitchen or garage, simply take half a chopped onion and apply it directly to the wound. Hold it in place for a few minutes and the pain should quickly start to ease.

For further relief, whip up two or three egg whites in a bowl and use them to cover the affected area. Hold the mixture in place using a breathable bandage for a natural, protective layer that will quicken your recovery.

6. Onions can Provide Cough Relief
The use of onions as part of a cheap, effective cough remedy is another practice which dates back centuries. It is best employed with a few other basic ingredients and there are a couple of things you can try.
Firstly, peel a red or white onion, and cut it into large slices. Layer the slices in a sealable jar and place brown sugar on top. Close the lid of the jar and let it sit for some time (around 6 hours is optimum). A syrup will form in the jar. Take a spoonful of the syrup as regularly as needed. The brown sugar makes the syrup more palatable and the resulting mixture does not taste too bad. Re-make the syrup every couple of days, replacing the old mixture with the new.
If you want an alternative, pour honey over the sliced onion instead of the brown sugar (use both if you have a particularly sweet tooth). Add a sprinkling of grated garlic for an extra health boost.

7. Onions Can Remove Eye Irritation
An onion's ability to remove eye irritants is derived from its most widely known feature - its ability to make our eyes water when chopped. This is a great property if you need to flush out an unwanted bit of dirt, a pesky fly or any other small irritant before it turns your whole eye red. Simply chop an onion and let nature takes its course! Make sure you don't touch your eye after chopping the onion though - that will add to your pain. Wash your hands thoroughly before you do so.

8. Onions Can Fight Insect Stings
Here is where the antihistamine properties of an onion come in handy. If you got stung by a bee or wasp, then a bit of crushed or grated onion applied directly to the skin can be extremely beneficial for pain relief.

The antihistamine will prevent an allergic reaction while the anti-inflammatory qualities of the onion will reduce any associated swelling. Keep the onion in place until the pain has subsided by using a breathable bandage that you should replace regularly.
