A new study throws light on gut function

For the first time, new insights into how the colon functions and actually expels its contents have been revealed.

The results of the study were published in the journal – Physiology.

It promises new diagnostics tools and treatments for gastrointestinal disorders to address problems with bowel movements leading to constipation, diarrhoea and pain, affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

The propulsion of intestinal contents is controlled by millions of neurons within the wall of the gut, known as the enteric nervous system. Capable of operating independently of the brain, a functioning enteric nervous system is essential for life – but exactly how it functions has been a mystery.

By unraveling the neural circuits of the enteric nervous system in guinea pigs and humans researchers are able to understand how the enteric nervous system ensures that food is slowly mixed and propelled along the digestive tube, allowing for absorption of nutrients  and excretion of waste.

“For the first time, we have combined video recording intestinal movements with a pressure-measuring manometric probe, enabling movements, pressures and electrical activities to be recorded all at the same time within the colon,” the Professor said.

“This powerful combination of techniques applied to a guinea pig colon identified several distinct neural mechanisms involved in the propulsion of colonic contents. This answers the deceptively simple question of how neural mechanisms within the colon manage the propulsion of bowel contents,” he said.

The findings also show how studies in humans and animals can be complementary, identifying fundamental mechanisms that are shared across species – in this case, guinea pigs and humans.

“Currently we treat intestinal disorders by addressing the symptoms, such stopping-up diarrhea or softening stools to ease constipation, but as a result of this new understanding of the neural networks of the enteric system, clinicians may be able to develop treatments that treat the cause of the problems,” he added.

How to lose weight if you have PCOS

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also known as PCOS, is a problem caused by hormonal imbalances. Most women with PCOS grow many small cysts on their ovaries. The cysts are not harmful but lead to hormone imbalances. These cysts lead to high androgen levels leading to symptoms such as hair growth, acne, irregular periods and weight gain. Because the weight gain is triggered by male hormones, it is typically in the abdomen area.

Women with PCOS frequently have insulin resistance, which means their bodies do not respond appropriately to high amounts of glucose. Simply put, larger amounts of insulin are required to metabolise a given amount of sugar. Insulin is a growth hormone. Its role in the body is to promote fat storage or weight gain. This leads to a rapid weight gain, despite a healthy diet and exercise plan. The biggest complaint I hear from my clients with PCOS is that its too hard to lose weight. These clients always say that they are consistently following a systematic diet and workout regime, but still not losing weight.

A few years back, I was working with a young girl aged 24 years very closely, and we were just not getting any results. Finally one day, I created a system for her where I could track every morsel that she was eating and also tracked the intensity of her workouts. I was shocked to see the results. Input was way more than the output which obviously led to weight gain. I would like to make a point that although it is a concern that people with PCOS do put on weight, very often it becomes an excuse for them and that mindset blocks the weight loss from happening .

However, a good healthy diet and a workout plan will definitely help you in losing weight. Here are a some tips that you could follow and get the desired results.

1) Focus on nutrition
I strongly recommend that you do not follow any fad diets as most of them will interfere with your insulin functioning which is already so messed up due to PCOS. Restricting your calorie intake will also not work and is a strong predictor of weight gain. Following the PFC principle of nutrition will definitely help in regulating your sugar levels and contributing to fat loss. PFC principle is a combination of eating proteins, fats and carbohydrates every every hours. This will guarantee the results and help in fat loss.

2) Cut out the junk
Reducing foods in your diet that cause spikes in blood sugar is crucial to managing your PCOS. This means opting for whole grain sources of carbohydrates over anything high in Glycemic Index.

3) Gut function
Most of the ladies I have worked with have clogged guts. High fibre fruits and smoothies with such fruits not only helps clear your gut, but also regulates your sugar.

4) Exercise
Your exercise routine should include high-intensity cardio workouts six to seven days of the week. For example, brisk walking or running or high intensity dance aerobics. Weight training three days a week will ensure more muscle mass contributing to fat reduction. Last but not the least, having the right mind codes will ensure you have the desired results.

Reasons why zinc is important for health

Zinc is chemically a metal and a trace mineral with multiple health benefits. It is required by the body for a number of functions in small quantities on a regular basis. Some of its important roles include improving immunity, hormone production and promoting digestion, controlling inflammation, tissue growth and repair, etc. to name a few. It also helps in controlling free radical production and therefore has anti-inflammatory effects in reversing heart disease and fighting cancer.
About 5 to 8 mg of zinc is needed by a person per day, with smaller children needing it in the lesser range and women needing more of it. Natural sources of zinc include animal rich protein foods like animal meat and seafood. Dairy products, legumes, pulses and whole grains also contain good amounts of zinc. Modern day foods contain added zinc and therefore are good sources too, though they availability and utility value for the body remain a question.
  1. Zinc improves immunity i.e. the body produces what are called as T cells when there is any infection or foreign body in the body. These T cells also help in controlling and regulating immune responses and in people with zinc deficiency, the immune system is suppressed putting them at risk for infections and illnesses.
  2. Zinc has a great role to play in maintaining skin integrity and delayed wound healing is one of the first symptoms of zinc deficiency. These people also could develop chronic ulcers or wounds. There is increased bacterial growth (reduced immunity), increased inflammation, and reduced re-epithelialization, all leading to poor skin health and delaying wound healing.
  3. Zinc is essential for healthy gut function and it is one of the best remedies for diarrhea. Deficiency can lead to leaky gut syndrome.
  4. Zinc reduces free radical damage, which is responsible for chronic inflammation. Eating adequate amounts of zinc can reduce this inflammation, leading to preventing heart disease, reducing the incidence of cancer, etc. It also is shown to prevent cellular damage in the retina, thereby reducing incidence of macular degeneration.
  5. Zinc is essential for proper growth and development. Zinc deficiency is shown to produce shorter stature, anaemia, and delayed sexual maturation. During the growing years especially, it is very important to provide an adequate amount of zinc for the body, either naturally or through supplements.
  6. Fertility and zinc also has a strong correlation. In males, it affects both the quantity and quality of sperm production. The sperm count was shown to improve with zinc supplementation in males who complained of low sperm count.
  7. Controlling memory is another function of zinc. It determines how neurones talk to each other, which is essential for transmission of signals across the brain and formation of memory.
