kidney stones- causes and how to get rid of them

Passing a kidney stone is one of the most painful things you can do - apart from childbirth.
Now a new study suggests that they’re becoming more common.
Part of the increase is down to the way doctors monitor stones - they used a CT scan rarely before, but the rise in the technology meant they found the stones easier.
It's not all down to the tests though.
Kidney stones can develop in anyone - and in one or both kidneys, but what actually causes them?
They're quite common, with about three in 20 men and up to two in 20 women developing them at some point.
Most often people aged 30 to 60 are affected by them.

Symptoms

Kidney stones, medically known as nephrolithiasis, cause severe pain, also known as renal colic.
Small stones can go undetected - but they can be passed out when you wee, according to the doctors. It's fairly common for a stone to block part of the urinary system.
If you're suffering from a blockage you'll have severe pain in the abdomen or groin - it can also sometimes cause a urinary tract infection (UTI).
Half the people who have had kidney stones will experience them again within five years of having them.
Look out for:
  • Ache in your lower back, sometimes in the groin - men can have a pain in their testicles and scrotum
  • Periods of intense pain in the back or side of your abdomen
  • Feeling restless and unable to lie still
  • Nausea
  • Needing to urinate more
  • Pain when you urinate
  • Blood in your urine

What causes kidney stones?

Waste products in the blood can occasionally form crystals that collect inside the kidney.
Over time they build up and form hard stone-like lumps.
If you don't drink enough fluids it's more likely to happen. If you're taking some types of medication or if you have a condition that raises levels of certain substances in your urine it can also raise the risk.
The rise in kidney stones - mostly calcium stones - is also down to a change in diet. Stones are helped along by diets high in fat, sugar and salt.
Race also played a factor in the findings. Nearly 90 per cent of kidney stones happen in white people.

What causes kidney stones:
  • calcium
  • ammonia
  • uric acid – a waste product produced when the body breaks down food to use as energy
  • cysteine – an amino acid that helps to build protein
People who have the following are likely to get recurring kidney stones:
  • eat a high-protein, low-fibre diet
  • are inactive or bed-bound
  • have a family history of kidney stones
  • have had several kidney or urinary infections
  • have had a kidney stone before, particularly if it was before you were 25
  • have only one fully working kidney
  • have had an intestinal bypass
Medication that makes it more likely
  • aspirin
  • antacids
  • diuretics (used to reduce fluid build-up)
  • certain antibiotics
  • certain antiretroviral medication (used to treat HIV)
  • certain anti-epileptic medication

How to get rid of them

Smaller stones will pass when you go to the toilet in your urine.
Larger stones may need breaking up. Doctors use an ultrasound or laser energy to do this, but sometimes keyhole surgery is needed to remove the very large stones.

What to eat?
If your stone is caused by too much calcium you need to reduce the amount of oxalates in your diet.
They prevent calcium being absorbed into your body.

 Foods that contain oxalates are:
  • Beetroot
  • Asparagus
  • Rhubarb
  • Leeks
  • Chocolate
  • Berries
  • Parsley
  • Celery
  • Almonds, peanuts and cashew nuts
  • Soy products
  • Grains, such as oatmeal, wheat germ and wholewheat
Always check with your doctor before you change your diet.

How to avoid them

Drink plenty of water everyday. A good test is to check if your urine is diluted (clear) to prevent waste products forming into kidney stones.

Types of Stones

Calcium Stones
They if there's too much calcium in the urine. They're usually either large and smooth or spiky and rough.

Struvite Stones
Often caused by infections and most commonly occur after a urinary tract infection.
More common in women than men.

Uric acid stones
They can form if there's a large amount of acid in your urine. If you have a high-protein diet or a condition like gout.

Cystine stones

Rarest type of kidney stone. It's caused by an inherited condition called cystinuria.

8 Pressure Points For Self Defense

Today all over the world, everyone needs to learn some form of self defense to protect themselves from their attackers- kidnappers / rapists / robbers / or anyone else. The areas vividly shown in the pictures are real strategic points which one should remember to fight against the attacker.

While most of us would like to believe that we're going to experience a serene and peaceful existence, there are plenty of bad people in the world who can end using violence against us to get what they want. While it's horrible to think about, it's better to be safe than sorry, which is why we've gathered a list of pressure points that can be used to help you escape from any potential aggressors.

1. JawSelf Defense
Hitting the jaw with the back of your hand with enough force can cause an attacker to lose consciousness for a while. This is because such an impact will turn the head so sharply that it will end up shaking the brain.
2. Sciatic NerveSelf Defense
The sciatic nerve can be found on the midline of the inner thigh between the knee and the groin. Hitting this pressure point with enough force will cause dizziness, shock, a great deal of pain, and even possible temporary immobility of the foot.
3. BicepsSelf Defense
A blow to the biceps can inflict temporary paralysis of the arm, as well as extreme pain. Often, there is also an involuntary relaxation of the fingers, which may result in the attacker losing their grip.
4. GroinSelf Defense
The groin is an area that's full of sensitive nerves, and slightly above it, you will also find the bladder and genitals. A weak blow to this sensitive area will often result in a very severe reaction from the person on the receiving end. A heavy blow can actually even cause shock and rupture the bladder.
5. Brachial Plexus
Self Defense
Blows to the brachial plexus will cause a great deal of pain as well as a numb sensation in the hand. If the impact is hard enough, you could actually end up breaking the collarbone, causing a rupture of the nerves of the brachial plexus.
6. Tibialis Anterior MuscleSelf Defense
A heavy blow to this region may end up breaking it, leading to pain that may immobilize and nauseate anyone on the receiving end. If the fracture is very grievous, then blood vessels may become torn.
7. HandsSelf Defense
Human hands are brimming with sensitive nerve endings that you can use against your opponent. That's why pressing against the area between a person's fingers will cause them to loosen their grip and lose their composure.
8. EyesSelf Defense
Only ever use this one as a final resort, since a strong press to both eyes or a hard blow against at least one of them can cause a person to permanently go blind. However,  a light press to the eyes will be enough to make an attacker temporarily lose his sight, giving you ample time to get to safety.

Lifestyle Changes That Can Help Manage Excessive Sweating

Sweating is a normal function of the body, but some people sweat so much that their clothes are often drenched in sweat. Hyperhidrosis is a condition where the amount of sweat produced by the sweat glands cannot be regulated. It is characterized by excessive sweating commonly seen in the underarms, palms and soles. This disorder can affect a person at any age and if left untreated, can become a lifelong condition. Though this condition is not a serious threat to your health, it can be quite embarrassing and can hamper your lifestyle.

In many cases, there is no obvious trigger for Hyperhidrosis, and it is caused by the malfunctioning of the nervous system. This is known as primary Hyperhidrosis. Sweat is a function which helps the body cool itself. In cases of primary Hyperhidrosis, the brain sends a message to the sweat glands to produce sweat even though the body does not need to be cooled. A genetic mutation may also be the cause for some cases of Hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis with obvious trigger factors is known as secondary Hyperhidrosis. While primary Hyperhidrosis mostly affects the underarms, groin , palms and soles, secondary Hyperhidrosis can affect all parts of the body.

Some of the common triggers for this condition are:
pregnancy
Menopause
Anxiety
Low blood sugar
Hyperthyroidism
Medication side effects
Alcohol or drug withdrawal
Parkinson's disease

Hyperhidrosis can be challenging to diagnose and treat. Lifestyle changes are the easiest way to address this disorder. Some changes that can help you fight Hyperhidrosis are:
  • Avoid spicy food and alcohol
  • Replace deodorants with antiperspirants
  • Choose cotton fabrics over synthetic fabrics
  • Wear loose fitting clothes.
  • Try using armpit shields and wearing absorbent socks.
Anticholinergic or antimuscarinic medicines can also help treat Hyperhidrosis. This keeps the nervous system from activating the sweat glands. Dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, abdominal cramps and difficulty in passing urine are some of the side effects associated with this medication. Iontophoresis  is a more aggressive form of Hyperhidrosis treatment. This involves passing a weak electric current through a wet pad to the affected area to block the sweat glands. It is usually used to treat excessive sweating in the palms and soles.
Botox injections can also help treat Hyperhidrosis by blocking the brain signals to the sweat glands. However this is not a permanent cure and may need to be repeated after a year or so.
Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy or a surgery to remove the sweat glands may also be recommended in extreme cases of Hyperhidrosis. This is usually seen as a permanent solution for excessive sweating, but are relatively new procedures and hence not very common.

Apple Cider Vinegar Can Help You Lose Skin Tags

Skin tags are harmless, soft skin growths that tend to occur on the eyelids, neck, armpits, groin folds, and under the breasts. They are most prone among middle-aged, obese adults. Removing a skin tag does not cause more to grow, and there is a harmless way to go about it, without having to make a trip to the doctor.

Instead of spending money on a cosmetic operation to safely remove skin tags, you should consider using a natural product as an alternative. As a result of its acidic properties, apple cider vinegar can be used to treat and help prevent a variety of common health problems. One of its benefits lies in its effectiveness in removing skin tags safely, and with minimal irritation to the surrounding area.
Why apple cider vinegar works
Apple cider vinegar doesn't attack the tag itself. Rather, it targets the tissue that causes and forms it. Once the tissue is destroyed, the tag turns black and falls off. Using apple cider vinegar targets the skin more deeply, ensuring that a tag is much less likely to grow again. Preferably, opt for an organically-produced bottle of apple cider vinegar, due to its higher quality.

Using apple cider vinegar to treat skin tags The following detailed steps will ensure that you are performing the treatment correctly, effectively and safely:
Step 1: Clean the surrounding area well, washing it with warm water and soap. Dry it thoroughly. Ensure that all sweat and dirt is removed, as it may inhibit the apple cider vinegar from working effectively.
Step 2: Soak a small cotton ball in organic apple cider vinegar, squeezing out any excess vinegar before applying it to the skin tag.
Step 3: Once you have finished applying the cider vinegar to the skin tag, clean the area once again. Note that cider vinegar has a potent smell.
Step 4: Repeat the process for several days until you start to see results. At first, you will notice that the tag will darken in color, indicating that it will soon fall off completely.
