Fatty food can restrict gut communication with body

A recent study has suggested that food items containing more grease and fat can put the communication between intestine and rest of the human body to stop.

A team of researchers has discovered that a high-fat meal completely shuts down the communication for a few hours. After they observed using the fish to examine cells that normally tell the brain and the rest of the body what's going on inside the gut after a meal.


The cells they were looking at are the enteroendocrine cells, which occur sparsely throughout the lining of the gut, but play a key role in signalling the body about the all-important alimentary canal. In addition to releasing hormones, the cells also have a recently-discovered direct connection to the nervous system and the brain.


These cells produce at least 15 different hormones to send signals to the rest of the body about gut movement, feelings of fullness, digestion, nutrient absorption, insulin sensitivity and energy storage.
But they fall asleep on the job for a few hours after a high-fat meal, and we don't yet know if that's good or bad, said an Asst. Prod. of genetics and microbiology.


Since enteroendocrine cells are key player's in digestion, the feeling of being full and subsequent feeding behaviour, this silencing may be a mechanism that somehow causes people eating a high-fat diet to eat even more.


This is a previously unappreciated part of the postprandial ( after-meal) cycle, he said.


If this happens every time we eat an unhealthy, high-fat meal, it might cause a change in insulin signalling, which could, in turn, contribute to the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.


To understand the silencing better, the researchers tried to break the process down step-by-step in zebra-fish, reports the study.


After the first sense a meal, the enteroendocrine cells trigger a calcium burst within seconds, initiating the signalling process.


But after that initial signal, there's a delayed effect later in the after-meal period. It's during this later response that the silencing occurs, said the researcher.


The silenced cells change shape and experience stress in their endoplasmic reticulum, a structure that assembles new proteins. It seems that these enteroendocrine cells, which are specialised to synthesise and secrete proteins like hormones and neurotransmitters, become overstimulated and exhausted for a while.


The team tried the high-fat diet on a line of germ-free zebra-fish raised in the absence of any microbes and found they didn't experience the same silencing effect. So, they began looking for gut microbes that might be involved in the process.


After screening through all the kinds of bacteria found in the gut, they saw that the silencing appeared to be the work of a single type of gut bacteria, called Acinetobacter.

You may be one of those people who love a cheat meal once in a while that is loaded with butter or oil, or you may be one of those who do not love it but do not mind it either. A recent study, however, has also linked excess oil and grease in food to the gut's health. According to the study, such food can reduce the communication between the intestine and the rest of your body. The researches found that a high-fat meal can completely shut down the communication for a few hours.

Researchers looked at the enteroendocrine cells, which though occur sparsely in the lining of the gut, play a key role in signally the body about the alimentary canal. These cells are also responsible for the production of certain hormones and have a direct connection with the central nervous system and the brain.

A break in communication between the cells in the gut can lead to problems like insulin sensitivity, indigestion, poor gastrointestinal health, among other health effects.

The journal published evidence that children who were in the habit of eating breakfast performed better academically in the classroom, especially in math and arithmetic.

2. Cellphone Radiation May Cause Brain Cancer

There has been an ongoing debate whether radiation from cellphones can cause cancer. A clinical trial carried out in 2016 has uncovered a link between cell phone radiation and cancer in rats. The trial exposed rats to the type of radiation found in cell phones for 9 hours a day for 2 years. The study found that there was an increased risk of tumors in the brain and heart. Consumer Reports says that this is enough to establish a link between the use of cell phones and long-term cancer risks.

However, Consumer Reports recommends using some common-sense precautions to avoid the risk of cell phone radiation causing cancer. Some of these are:

  • Send text messages or use video calling when possible.
  • Don’t keep your phone in your shirt or pants pocket.

3. Overeating of Fat Damages the Brain

We all know about the dangers of having too much fat in our diets, however, eating too much fat can also damage your brain. Scientists have discovered that fatty foods can rewire the brain to start craving foods that are high in fat.
A study found that people who regularly overeat fatty foods develop a defect in the brain. This defect causes the brain to send signals to continue eating, even though the person is technically feeling full. So, the brain’s system that is used to curb appetite starts to make a person crave fatty foods and this results in obesity and other health problems.

Having good eating habits can help the brain to function properly and avoid developing cravings for fatty foods. For example, researcher on neuroscience says that studies have shown that alternative day fasting can help delay the onset of Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, or Parkinson’s diseases.

7. Too Much Sugar

A new study published recently found reductions in middle-aged recovering alcoholics’ white matter pathways compared to non-alcoholics.

The researchers showed that chronic misuse of alcohol results in measurable damage to the brain. These results further indicate that individuals at high risk for alcoholism may have differences in their brain structure. One of the researchers, professor of psychiatry and psychology states that the longer you misuse alcohol the greater your chances are of permanent brain damage.

Proper care, early treatment of disease can check damage to liver

Liver diseases have become common with adoption of unhealthy lifestyle such as indulging in excessive fatty food, alcohol, obesity and lack of exercise. However, if taken proper care and diagnosed early, most of the liver diseases are treatable and the damage to the liver can be checked, aver doctors on the occasion of World Liver Day on Wednesday.
According to doctors, the common liver diseases affecting the people of AP are Hepatitis B which accounts for 56 per cent of the general population, besides alcoholic liver disease and Hepatitis C. Obesity is leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Certain viruses like Hepatitis A, B, C, E, and certain drugs can also cause liver diseases besides autoimmune diseases and hereditary disorders. People with hyperglycemia, hypothyroidism, diabetes and high BP are also at risk of developing liver problems.

"The problem with most liver diseases is they are asymptomatic in the early stages and by the time they are detected, 70-80% of the liver is already damaged. Still, jaundice, weakness, loss of appetite, swelling of tummy and feet are some indications that the liver may have been affected. However, jaundice can occur due to other malfunctions of the body even if the liver is not affected," said Dr Y Radhakrishna, gastroenterologist from Radha Krishna liver and gastro centre.

Therefore, to detect liver problems, regular screening and certain diagnostic tests can be done such as blood tests, ultrasound of the abdomen, endoscopy and liver biopsy in certain patients. Liver fibroscan is another new, non-invasive method to detect liver damage early in patients with fatty liver, alcoholics, patients with chronic Hepatitis B and C. 


Since prevention is always better than cure, liver diseases too can be prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle such as consuming filtered water, avoiding eating at unhygienic places and avoiding alcohol and excess of fatty food. Regular 45 minutes to one hour of exercise and maintaining the optimal body weight prevents fatty liver and other associated diseases. Affordable vaccination is also available to prevent Hepatitis A and B, added the gastroenterologist.

However, one positive development is that despite presence of Hepatitis B patients, incidences are coming down and malignancy is also less. Dr R Padmavathi, consultant gastroenterologist from Care Hospital said, "With early screening and intervention, liver function tests, effective anti-viral treatment, there's around 20-30% decrease in Hepatitis B cases of late. Vaccination programme has also played a key role in bringing down new Hepatitis B cases."

As for those developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD due to metabolism syndrome leading to deposition of fat in the liver), it can be detected through abdominal ultrasound. "This disease is reversible within six months-one year with consumption of low fat food, regular exercise and by taking medicines, keeping obesity, hypertension and diabetes in check. Around 40-50 per cent of diabetics develop non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. If timely treatment is not given, it can progress to non-alcoholic steato hepatitis (Nash) and finally into liver cirrhosis," stated Dr Padmavathi.

According to a study, men who consume diets high in fat and sleep less during night time are more likely to feel sleepy during the day.

"After adjusting for other demographic and lifestyle factors and chronic diseases, we found that those who consumed the highest fat intake were more likely to experience excessive daytime sleepiness," said lead author Yingting Cao, doctoral student at University of Adelaide in Australia.

Higher consumption of food items rich in fat was also strongly associated with sleep apnea, a sleep disorder.

"Poor sleep and feeling sleepy during the day means you have less energy, but this, in turn, is known to increase people's cravings for high-fat, high-carbohydrate foods associated with poor sleep outcomes. So the poor diet-and-sleep pattern can become a vicious cycle," Cao explained in the paper published in the journal Nutrients.

Daytime sleepiness may have significant implications for alertness and concentration, the researchers warned, adding that people need to pay more attention to eat better and have a good sleep.
"We hope our work could help to inform future intervention studies, enabling people to achieve healthy weight loss while also improving their quality of sleep," Cao added.

The results were based on data of more than 1800 Australian men aged 35-80 and included their dietary habits over a 12-month period.

Among those with available dietary and sleep data, 41 percent of the men surveyed had reported experiencing daytime sleepiness, while 47 percent of them had poor sleep quality at night.

About 54 percent had mild-to-moderate sleep apnea, and 25 percent had moderate-to-severe sleep apnea.
