8 False Biology Factoids Everyone Believes

In a world of overwhelming amounts of information, where everyone has an honorary doctor’s degree courtesy of search engines and symptom-finding websites, it is often hard to sift between what’s real and what’s myth. Here are eight of the most commonly-held beliefs about health and the body that are actually baseless myths:
1. Brown Sugar Is Healthier than White Sugar
Brown sugar is often mistakenly thought of as more natural or healthier than white sugar because of its color and somewhat more textured flavor. In truth, there is absolutely no difference between the two except for the use of molasses in brown sugar production.
2. Everyone Needs 8 Hours of Sleep
The amount of rest the body needs varies greatly between different people. For children, eight hours might not be enough, while for some adults, eight hours are too much. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the recommended amount of sleep for preschoolers is 10-13 hours a day, for children of elementary school age it's 9-11 hours, teenagers should aim for 8-10 and adults are advised to sleep 7-9 hours a day. Even those ranges aren't set in stone and allow for 1-2 hours more or less than the recommended average.
3. The Appendix Is Useless
Health myths: appendix
Because the function of the appendix is unclear and appendicitis being rather sudden and possibly deadly, there used to be a trend of preventative surgeries to remove appendices. Recently, however, researchers have found out that the appendix may serve as an important reservoir of gut bacteria.
4. The Blood in the Veins Is Blue
This is kind of the fault of biology teachers, as many blood vessel charts distinguish arteries and veins by color-coding them red and blue. Consequently, some people have come to think that oxygen makes blood red, and that without it, it turns blue. In truth, deoxygenated blood is dark red.
5. Pee Is the Best Remedy for Jellyfish Sting
DO NOT PEE ON YOURSELF IN PUBLIC. Most home remedies for jellyfish stings will probably make matters worse. Apply vinegar to the wound and the tentacles and then gently pry them off using tweezers (do not use your hands and do not squeeze them). Douse in hot but not scalding water and you should be good. Or, just use an anti-jellyfish sting spray.
6. Alcohol Kills Brain Cells
Overindulging in drinks may cause an oxygen deficit that can in turn damage the synapses, the connections between our nerve-endings and brain-cells. The cells themselves are unharmed in the process. Of course, that doesn't mean drinking isn't hazardous to your cognitive functions, as the synapses are crucial for the operation of our brains.
7. Chocolate Causes Acne and Blackheads
There is absolutely no evidence to support the common wisdom that wonderful, wonderful chocolate is the cause of your skin problems. This was actually disproved as early as 1969, when a team of medical experts put it to the test by giving participants bars of enriched chocolate or a bar that seemed like chocolate but contained no chocolate at all. The results showed no difference in acne between the participants.
8. One Hemisphere of the Brain Is More Developed and Determines if You’re Creative or Analytic
This is an incredibly pervasive one. People seem to think that if your left hemisphere is more developed, you’re prone to be an artist and if it’s the right one, you’ll be good at solving math problems. It’s true that the two hemispheres serve different functions, but in all people, both hemispheres are equally developed, and things such as creativity cannot be traced to a single point in the brain and span both hemispheres.

How to Develop Good Thoughts

How To Develop Good Thoughts

How To Develop Good Thoughts

Mind is the most sophisticated gift given to humans to live a life of higher purpose. Mind is a bundle of thoughts. It is said “What you think you become”. Thoughts are solely responsible for successes or failures and sorrows or happiness. It is important to regulate your thoughts so that you are able to make the most of your life. There are a few easy ways you can develop good thoughts.

Do meditation and yoga asanas

Often we get lost into the world outside. Taking sometime on a regular basis or at least while you are confused can help derive from the infinite energy and potential contained within. Yogic exercises can not only help gain physical health, but also mental health and are therefore worth trying.

Look at the mirror and smile

Often we see our image in the mirror to get ready to daily work or an event. However, looking at yourself while you are struck up with negative emotions is a good idea. Smile at your mirror image and say to yourself, “I can do it and happy times are ahead”. This shall relieve your mood and help develop positivity.

Be in the company of good people

The ambience you are in and the people who surround you are crucial in influencing your thought process. Always seek the company of good people and positive people so that you share similar vibrations.
Work on your thoughts a bit

Work on your thoughts a bit

When you tend to think in a negative way, just sit with yourself and say, “This attitude is not becoming of me. I am bound to think the other way.” Change the tone of your thought from negative to positive and develop hopes in yourself and situations.

Never become a passive victim

Never think that you can't just change the way things happen in the world and you are victimized. Self pity or expecting the sympathy of others are the worst things you can do. Instead, you say to yourself, “I have the power to change my destiny and I shall do it by all means”.

Help someone

When you face a negative situation, escape from that and hep someone. It could be either physical or mental help. Consoling a distressed person or encouraging a person needing motivation can help motivate yourself unconsciously and this is one of the most potential ways to boost up yourself.

Reconcile with yourself

Often, the feeling of inability, helplessness and guilt are the ones that push you to bad thoughts. Say that it is but natural for humans to be imperfect. You had done what you could do and there is always a scope for improvement. This shall help you gain confidence and proceed with more energy.

Sing aloud

Singing shall alleviate your sufferings. You can choose songs of either happy or sorrowful mood depending on what works best in your case. If you can't sing aloud, at least listen to some good songs.
Read great quotes

Read great quotes

Inspiring yourself with some good quotes and messages is the easiest way to cultivate good thoughts. Often you shall feel you come across a fantastic message that you needed right at that time of life.
Think of the blessings you have

Think of the blessings you have

Once you reflect and look around, you shall discover several blessings have got than others. Think on them and inspire yourself. Feel grateful for them and thank god for all those gifts.

Human eggs developed in a lab for the first time

Scientists have succeeded for the first time in growing human eggs in a laboratory from the earliest stages in ovarian tissue all the way to full maturity - a scientific step that had previously been taken in mice.

Publishing their result the scientists  said it could one day help in developing regenerative medicine therapies and new infertility treatments.

In previous studies, scientists had developed mouse eggs in a laboratory to the stage where they produced live offspring, and had also matured human eggs from a relatively late stage of development.

This latest work, by scientists at two research hospitals, is the first time human eggs have been developed outside the human body from their earliest stage to full maturity.

"Being able to fully develop human eggs in the lab could widen the scope of available fertility treatments. We are now working on optimising the conditions that support egg development in this way and studying how healthy they are," said the researcher.

Independent experts not directly involved in this work praised it as important, but also cautioned that there is much more to do before lab-grown human eggs could be safely be made ready for fertilisation with  sperm.

"This early data suggests this may well be feasible in the future," said  a senior clinical lecturer in Endocrinology.

"(But) the technology remains at an early stage, and much more work is needed to make sure that the technique is safe and optimised before we ascertain whether these eggs remain normal during the process, and can be fertilised to form embryos that could lead to healthy babies."

A genetics professor  said the work was "an impressive technical achievement".

If success and safety rates were improved, he said, it could in future help cancer patients wishing to preserve their fertility while undergoing chemotherapy treatment, improve fertility treatments, and deepen scientific understanding of the biology of the earliest stages of human life.
