Different Uses of Vicks VaporRub

Vicks VapoRub has been around for over a century, and it can now be found in many households across the globe. This Salve, with its combination of menthol, camphor, and other ingredients, which include oils of eucalyptus and nutmeg, cools and soothes at the same time. Individually, these ingredients have specific uses such as pain relief, itch reduction, increasing circulation, acne fighting and anti-fungal. Therefore, with all these combined properties, it's not surprising that it can be used as more than just a decongestant.

You probably have this very useful medical ointment sitting at home right now in one of your cabinets. So let us take a look at some of the unique and clever ways that Vicks can be used in everyday life.

1. Pimple Buster
Vicks - Unique - Uses

Got a huge spot on your face that you think everyone is looking at? Dab some Vicks on it to dry it out and make it disappear.

2. Headaches
If you're suffering from a sinus headache, inhaling the vapors can help open your clogged airways to relieve the pressure. All you have to do is rub a small bit of Vicks under your nose. If you're suffering from a non-sinus headache, try rubbing a small amount of Vicks onto your temples - this is supposed to relieve the pressure you can feel from your headache.

3. Nail Fungus
Many of the compounds that make up Vicks VapoRub are anti-fungal and, as a result, it can prevent the growth of fungus on your nails. Simply apply it to your nails and let it get to work.

4. Itch and Sting/Bite Relief
Grandmas across the globe have been using Vicks to stop itching and pain from outdoor encounters for many years. Simply rub it into the affected area and let those magical ingredients do their thing.

5. Nausea
Mint has always been a popular go-to for people suffering from nausea. To combat nausea, either rub some Vicks under your nose, or create a facial steam to inhale.

6. Burns
A minor burn can be soothed by using Vicks. This is because the camphor, along with some of the other ingredients present in this ointment, have the ability to heal burns and numb the pain.

7. Creaky Doors
If you have a really annoying creaky door, but can't get your hands on some oil or WD40, then try rubbing a bit of Vicks on the creaky hinges.

8. Bruises
Vicks, thanks to the camphor and menthol present in it, is able to help heal bruises faster. This is because the aforementioned ingredients help increase circulation. Simply rub some ointment onto the bruise to help it heal.

8 False Biology Factoids Everyone Believes

In a world of overwhelming amounts of information, where everyone has an honorary doctor’s degree courtesy of search engines and symptom-finding websites, it is often hard to sift between what’s real and what’s myth. Here are eight of the most commonly-held beliefs about health and the body that are actually baseless myths:
1. Brown Sugar Is Healthier than White Sugar
Brown sugar is often mistakenly thought of as more natural or healthier than white sugar because of its color and somewhat more textured flavor. In truth, there is absolutely no difference between the two except for the use of molasses in brown sugar production.
2. Everyone Needs 8 Hours of Sleep
The amount of rest the body needs varies greatly between different people. For children, eight hours might not be enough, while for some adults, eight hours are too much. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the recommended amount of sleep for preschoolers is 10-13 hours a day, for children of elementary school age it's 9-11 hours, teenagers should aim for 8-10 and adults are advised to sleep 7-9 hours a day. Even those ranges aren't set in stone and allow for 1-2 hours more or less than the recommended average.
3. The Appendix Is Useless
Health myths: appendix
Because the function of the appendix is unclear and appendicitis being rather sudden and possibly deadly, there used to be a trend of preventative surgeries to remove appendices. Recently, however, researchers have found out that the appendix may serve as an important reservoir of gut bacteria.
4. The Blood in the Veins Is Blue
This is kind of the fault of biology teachers, as many blood vessel charts distinguish arteries and veins by color-coding them red and blue. Consequently, some people have come to think that oxygen makes blood red, and that without it, it turns blue. In truth, deoxygenated blood is dark red.
5. Pee Is the Best Remedy for Jellyfish Sting
DO NOT PEE ON YOURSELF IN PUBLIC. Most home remedies for jellyfish stings will probably make matters worse. Apply vinegar to the wound and the tentacles and then gently pry them off using tweezers (do not use your hands and do not squeeze them). Douse in hot but not scalding water and you should be good. Or, just use an anti-jellyfish sting spray.
6. Alcohol Kills Brain Cells
Overindulging in drinks may cause an oxygen deficit that can in turn damage the synapses, the connections between our nerve-endings and brain-cells. The cells themselves are unharmed in the process. Of course, that doesn't mean drinking isn't hazardous to your cognitive functions, as the synapses are crucial for the operation of our brains.
7. Chocolate Causes Acne and Blackheads
There is absolutely no evidence to support the common wisdom that wonderful, wonderful chocolate is the cause of your skin problems. This was actually disproved as early as 1969, when a team of medical experts put it to the test by giving participants bars of enriched chocolate or a bar that seemed like chocolate but contained no chocolate at all. The results showed no difference in acne between the participants.
8. One Hemisphere of the Brain Is More Developed and Determines if You’re Creative or Analytic
This is an incredibly pervasive one. People seem to think that if your left hemisphere is more developed, you’re prone to be an artist and if it’s the right one, you’ll be good at solving math problems. It’s true that the two hemispheres serve different functions, but in all people, both hemispheres are equally developed, and things such as creativity cannot be traced to a single point in the brain and span both hemispheres.

Wasp and bee stings

Bee and wasp stings can be very annoying. However, the real health problems are reserved for people who’ve been stung multiple times, and those who suffer allergic reactions to the stings. People who’ve been stung many times can feel symptoms like vertigo, fever, vomiting and nausea due to an excess of venom in the body. In the case of an allergic reaction, the patient’s throat swells up and they can’t breathe properly.

If you've been stung many times, you should see a doctor as quickly as you can. Allergic reactions require emergency medical attention. People in this situation are supposed to carry around an EpiPen with which they can inject themselves. This releases epinephrine to combat the effect of the venom. For the rest of us, if stung by a bee (not a wasp or hornet), try to remove the stinger from your skin with tweezers to limit the venom entering your body.

Vodka Cure for Cold Sores

Cold sores generally take about two weeks to clear up. Here’s a suggestion for helping it along. Dab a cold sore with a swab that’s been dipped in a little vodka—the alcohol will help dry it out. Be warned that the alcohol will also sting.
