How Spending Some Time Alone is Good For Your Health

Far too often these days, many people end up feeling overwhelmed, and thanks to social media it sometimes feels like there's no way to escape. However, it's extremely important to switch your phone off and get away from every other human being every so often. Why? Keep reading and find out.

1. It Fights Stress

Being Alone benefits
Being alone and feeling bored deactivates the areas in your brain that promote heightened awareness, which can help lower stress levels. Boredom helps calm your brain down and can help you regulate your emotions a lot better.

2. It Helps You Unwind
Spending time alone is a brilliant way to recharge your mind and body. A massive survey with 18,000 participants from 134 different countries found that 'spending time alone' was the way most people felt the most relaxed. 'Reading' came in 2nd place and 'being in nature' came 3rd.

3. It wards off depression
 Being Alone benefits

It may seem counterintuitive, but spending time alone has actually been found to tackle depression. Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign revealed that the risk of depression is significantly decreased for those who enjoy spending time alone. Additionally, they also found that people who enjoy being alone are far less likely to suffer from depression at any point in their lives.

4. It Boosts Your Mental Strength
Plenty of people get nervous or antsy when they have to be alone for a long time. However, we really should start to do it more often, since studies have shown that forcing yourself to sit through extended periods of solitude will fortify your mental strength.

5. It Makes You More Compassionate
Harvard University found that being isolated can help you build a stronger and more empathetic character. According to Harvard researchers, sessions in solitude help people gain a better understanding of the struggles and experiences of others, which can help them become more sincerely compassionate throughout their lives.

6. It Makes You More Creative
If you want to become more creative, then there's no better way than spending time alone. The more bored you get, the more creative you'll become, since the human mind will start coming up with loads of different ways of keeping yourself entertained, and since you're alone there will be nobody around to distract you.

7. It Creates Self-Reliance
If you always rely on others for assistance, opinions, and advice, then you might end up becoming partially-dependent on others, which won't allow you to become self-reliant. If you want to feel a sense of independence, you'll need to start making decisions on your own, which is something that spending time alone forces you to do.

8. It Improves Concentration
Interruptions and distractions are an inevitable part of day-to-day life, from the daily barrage of emails to friends and family messaging you to see when you're free to meet up. Setting aside some proper alone time will allow you to cut out most of these disturbances, letting you get on with the task at hand. You can also improve your memory and concentration by means of these pressure points.

9. It Improves Your Memory
Spending time alone has also been found to boost your memory. In fact, research from Harvard has shown that people remember the key details of tasks they completed by themselves in far more detail than those they completed with the help of others.

10. It Strengthens Your Relationships
Being alone has been shown to help you gain a better understanding of who you are. Such self-knowledge is absolutely essential if you want any of your long-term relationships to work out. After all, if you don't even understand yourself, how can you expect to truly understand the needs and desires of another person?

10 Vital Life Lessons We Can Learn from Children

Children seem to know something that adults have forgotten. They appear more confident, more courageous and enjoy life more intensely than we adults do. I often look back at my childhood years and cannot help but think of them as the best years of my life. I was a carefree spirit; I lived in the present moment; I had no anxieties and I had no fears. I often wish that I could return to the innocence and zest for life I once had when I was a child. I believe that we can all learn something from our younger selves to bring more clarity and joy into adulthood.

1. They see each day as a new beginning

When you are young, a day can feel like an eternity. Yet with each new day we are aware of the new prospects and new opportunities to make new friends, explore new adventures and learn new things. Every day is an opportunity to start afresh. And, unlike adults, children do not carry baggage from one day to the next.

2. They are fearless
 children life lessons
Children are more willing to explore and try new things. They are unaware of the consequences and are more willing to try something new. If they injure themselves they use it as an opportunity to learn from their mistakes. As adults, we often hold ourselves back, predominantly because of fear. We stop ourselves from taking chances and seeing what happens. Successful people tend to be those that step out of their boundaries and take risks.

3. They lose themselves in creative projects
children life lessonsA child can often be seen getting lost in a creative project for hours at a time, be it drawing, playing with clay, building a sand castle, and so on. Yet, as we get older, we stop seeing creative activities as worthwhile. How many adults do you know (aside from artists) who spend their free time drawing, playing with clay or finger painting?

4. They find joy in most things and laugh every day

Children have a beautiful ability to find joy all around them. They see silliness everywhere.

5. They cry if they feel like it
children life lessons
Crying is not often an emotion that adults feel uncomfortable expressing, yet children do so all the time. Crying helps release our emotions in a normal, healthy way. Yet, instead, we always make it a point to keep it in check. Consequently, we end up keeping our emotions to ourselves. At times, it's okay for us to be a little more open and vulnerable with people we feel comfortable around.

6. Children are active

Thinking back to my younger years, it was a joy to play outside, running around until I was out of breath and my cheeks were rosy. I never thought of being active as exercise or daily fitness, for me, I was just playing and it was fun.

7. They are more willing to try new things children life lessons
Children will attempt to play a sport that they have never tried before. They are more willing to jump on a trampoline or dive into a pool, or ski down a mountain, even if they have never done so before. Adults tend to have a fear of the unknown and prefer to stay in their comfort zone, rarely venturing out. Adventure though can make us feel exhilarated and awakened.

8. They are enthusiastic

Children often tend to have so much enthusiasm. They feel lots of excitement, and are hopeful and optimistic. We too should learn to approach life in a more optimistic way. As adults, we often tend to dwell on the negative.

9. They nurture friendships

Observe children playing with their friends, they often find pure joy in doing so and are always keen to make new ones. Children tend to enjoy their many activities too - they join soccer teams, go to birthday parties and enjoy quite a number of after school activities too.

10. They notice the little things

The simple things that we often take for granted tend to bring incredible joy and profound inspiration to children. They notice the tiny miracles that surround them each day. How much more beautiful life could be if we noticed the same things they do?

This Doctor Says Humans Actually Need 7 Kinds of Rest (and You're Probably Not Getting All of Them)Getting a solid eight hours of sleep isn't enough.

We're only a week into 2021 and we've already had a coup attempt, a rampaging new strain of Covid, a halting vaccine rollout, and even attack squirrels (murder hornets and meth alligators are so 2020). It does not appear we're in for a restful year. But even if the world makes it hard to relax, at least one doctor insists we all need to find a way to reset and recharge anyway.

And that's more complicated than just switching off your brain and switching on Netflix every once in a while.

In a new TED Ideas post, Saundra Dalton-Smith insists "we go through life thinking we've rested because we have gotten enough sleep -- but in reality we are missing out on the other types of rest we desperately need" and outlines the seven types of rest that are essential for human flourishing.

1. Physical rest

This is the usual definition of rest we're all familiar with. But while we know we need to spend a decent number of hours in bed to stay healthy, a steady drumbeat of studies shows a large proportion of us still don't get enough physical rest.

2. Mental rest

Always have a tornado of thoughts swirling in your head from the moment you wake up to the moment you (finally) fall asleep? You need more mental rest, and even if you sleep a solid eight hours a night, you're not going to feel fully recharged until you get it.

"The good news is you don't have to quit your job or go on vacation to fix this. Schedule short breaks to occur every two hours throughout your workday; these breaks can remind you to slow down. You might also keep a notepad by the bed to jot down any nagging thoughts that would keep you awake," suggests Dalton-Smith.

3. Sensory rest

Staring at screens all day and all night means your eyes never get a proper rest, but this isn't the only reason many of us never give our senses a break. Noisy cities, pinging notifications, and blaring music all contribute to constant sensory stimulation. Your brain needs a rest now and again. Consciously close your eyes and give yourself the gift of silence for short periods throughout the day.

4. Creative rest

Inc.com and other sites are full of tips on how to be more creative, but just as important as striving to put out new ideas is remembering to pause and take in the building blocks out of which they're constructed -- awe, art, inspiring people, and time to let it all marinate.

5. Emotional rest

This "means having the time and space to freely express your feelings and cut back on people pleasing," Dalton-Smith explains. "Emotional rest also requires the courage to be authentic. An emotionally rested person can answer the question 'How are you today?' with a truthful 'I'm not okay' -- and then go on to share some hard things that otherwise go unsaid."

In other words, we all need the space to stop pretending for ourselves and others and get real about our feelings sometimes.

6. Social rest

Some people energize you. Others drain you (here's how to spot them). If you spend too much time with the latter type, you're going to need some emotional rest.

7. Spiritual rest

All humans, no matter their religious affiliation or lack thereof, have a need to feel connected to something larger than themselves. That's sometimes not easy to maintain in the middle of the minutiae of everyday life. The good news is science shows simple interventions can give you a quick dose of awe that should lead to measurable increases in well-being.

So next time you think to yourself, "I'm tired," don't leave your complaint at that. Instead, dig a little deeper and try to identify just what sort of rest you're lacking exactly. Once you know what you're missing, you'll be in a much better place to figure out how to recharge effectively.
