Tonsil Stones - home remedies

I'm sure most of you like me would at once say, that the word tonsils stone is wrong, there are only kidney and gall bladder stones. Yes, you all are right, but this is not a stone like that. But continue to read how it affects and remedies for it.
But if you are plagued by bad breath in spite of good oral habits or experience a sore throat, earache, and an irritable cough without a reason, it’s time to consider the possibility of tonsil stones. Tonsil stones may even leave a bad taste in your mouth. You may also have some difficulty swallowing or feel like there’s something stuck in the back of your throat. If these sound familiar, here’s what you can do about tonsil stones.Tonsil stones are basically made of debris that builds up in your tonsils.

Tonsils are glands situated at the back of the throat and they contain folds called tonsillar crypts. Minerals like calcium as well as dead cells and mucus can collect in these folds and solidify into small whitish blobs. Fungi and bacteria that infect your tonsils and cause tonsillitis can also play a role in the development of these stones.

Natural Remedies For Tonsil Stones

Tonsil stones don’t cause any symptoms or require treatment in many cases. In some instances, depending on the size or frequency at which they form, your doctor may recommend laser treatment to smoothen the folds in your tonsils so that debris can’t collect in them. It’s also possible to surgically remove your tonsils to avoid the accumulation. In most cases, however, some simple home remedies can help dislodge these stones.

1. Cough Them Up

Coughing is a natural process by which your body keeps your airways and throat clear. And coughing purposefully can help you expel tonsil stones.

How to go about it: Coughing with a little force can dislodge tonsil stones. Do remember to cough into a tissue though, as these stones can smell pretty bad. Be sure not to over-stress or injure your throat.

2. Try A Salt Water Gargle

Gargling with warm salty water can be helpful if you have tonsil stones. Salt water can help loosen them. It also has an antibacterial effect. The very process of gargling can help wash away harmful germs from your mouth as well.

How to go about it: Mix half a teaspoon of salt into 8 ounces of warm water to make a gargle. Gargle twice a day regularly. Do make sure you spit out the water after you’re done gargling as this water can contain debris and germs. This remedy might not be suitable for small children who may accidentally swallow the gargle.

3. Pick It

If your tonsil stones are visible, you can try to pick them off. However, you’ll need to reach into your throat to do this so this remedy carries the unpleasant risk of gagging.

How to go about it: Use a dental pick to dislodge those tonsil stones. Make sure you have sufficient light and do be careful not to damage tissue.

4. Try A Swab

You could also try to remove tonsil stones with the help of a cotton swab. This remedy also involves reaching into your throat and may trigger your gag reflex.

How to go about it: You can use a clean cotton swab to gently wipe tonsil stones off. Place the swab beneath the tonsil stone, apply gentle pressure at the bottom, and push upward so that it pops out.

5. Use A Water Flosser

A water flosser or irrigator allows you to focus a jet of water into your mouth. This stream of water can help to gently dislodge any tonsil stones that you have.

How to go about it: The water flosser comprises a container that holds water and is connected to a pipe that can stream water into your mouth. Fill your water flosser with warm water. Now open your mouth and use a mirror to aim a jet of water at the back of your throat. The pulsating water should be able to dislodge your tonsil stones. Remember, it’s best to start off with the water flosser at a low setting. Also, use a flashlight if you’re not able to see clearly. Finish off with a salt water gargle.

6. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Practicing good oral healthcare can be useful if you have tonsil stones. It can help get rid of germs and debris involved in the formation of stones as well as help manage symptoms like bad breath.

Brush And Floss

Brushing twice a day is necessary for maintaining the health of your teeth. It helps to get rid of plaque, food particles, and other debris from your mouth before they can make their way to your throat. Also, make sure you floss every day to dislodge debris stuck between your teeth.

Drink Water

Make sure you drink sufficient water. This can help clean out the back of your throat and stop debris from accumulating. Though the amount of water that you need can vary from person to person, on average, a man needs about 2.6 liters a day while a woman needs about 2.1 liters. So make sure you don’t skimp on water!

Try An Odor-Busting Tea

If you find plain water boring, you can try a cup of green tea with beneficial mint and cinnamon to clean your mouth and get rid of bad breath. Green tea, mint, and cinnamon have antimicrobial properties and can be effective against oral pathogens. Mint and cinnamon also have the added benefit of being aromatic. So a cup of tea with these can help keep your mouth clean and germ-free.

What to do: You will need 2 tablespoons of green tea, 1 cinnamon stick, and a teaspoon of fresh mint leaves. Boil 2 cups of water. Take the water off the stove, let it cool a bit and add the green tea, cinnamon stick, and mint leaves (crushed) to it. Let it steep for about 5 minutes. Strain and drink up your delicious, mouth-freshening tea.

How to Get Rid of a White Tongue

Our tongue, like our skin, tells us a lot about our health. White or coated tongue normally happens, when one has stomach upset, some medications, also cause your tongue to be coated as white.
It can be a bit of a shock to open your mouth to brush your teeth in the morning only to find that your tongue has a strange white coating on it. A white tongue occurs when the bumps on your tongue swell and trap dead cells, bacteria, and debris. Though it looks pretty gross, it usually isn’t too serious and should go away with time. However, there are a few simple methods that can be used to clear it up faster – below you’ll find some of them!

1. Garlic
Garlic is often said to cause bad breath, but we need to disregard this as raw garlic will help to kill bacteria and cleanse the tongue.
2. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. To kill the germs that are causing your white tongue, place a tablespoon of aloe vera juice in your mouth, swish it around for a few minutes, spit it out, and then rinse your mouth with warm water. You can repeat this procedure several times a day.
3. Salt
This is one of the best helpers for cleansing the tongue. The abrasive salt particles will remove contamination and dead cells from your tongue. Simply sprinkle some salt on your tongue and lightly brush with a toothbrush for one minute, then rinse your mouth with water. Repeat this procedure twice a day.
4. Turmeric
Turmeric is an excellent alternative to antiseptic drugs for the mouth. Combine some turmeric with some citrus juice until you have a paste consistency, and then rub this paste on your tongue for 2 minutes. Once the 2 minutes have passed, rinse your mouth thoroughly with warm water.
5. Toothbrush or Scrub
Gently brush your tongue with a toothbrush or a special brush from the base to the tip. Don’t press too hard and take your time.
6. Disinfectant Mouthwash with Herbs and Salt
Add a tablespoon of chamomile, a teaspoon of mint, a teaspoon of sage, a pinch of oak bark to a bowl and fill it with 4 cups of boiled water. Wait for the broth to cool and then strain it. Then pour a tablespoon of salt into the broth. Swish your mouth with this concoction twice a day after brushing your teeth.
Dos and Don’ts for a Healthy Tongue
1. Don’t Smoke
Smoking inflames the papillae of the tongue, meaning that dead cells will be able to accumulate on the tongue, which in turn creates a nice environment for bacteria to grow in. Furthermore, cigarette smoke contains chemicals that are unhealthy for mouth tissue.
2. Don’t Drink Alcohol
Alcohol affects the tongue in 2 ways at once – it, like smoking, causes inflammation of the papillae in the tongue and dehydrates the body. Therefore, it’s better to refrain from it.
3. Drink More Water
Water helps the whole body, the tongue included. Being dehydrated is one of the main causes of a white tongue. Therefore, you should make sure that you’re drinking enough every day. Always carry a bottle of water with you so that you can replenish your water levels whenever you’re thirsty.
4. Improve Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene will help you reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth. Therefore, it’s necessary to clean your teeth and tongue after every meal, in the morning and before bedtime. Ideally, the ritual should look like this: clean your teeth and tongue, use dental floss, use an oil irrigator, and finish with disinfectant mouthwash.

What could excessive white discharge from the vagina mean?

Vaginal discharge in women has a physiological significance and a specific function as well. The glands present in the cervix and the walls of the vagina secrete a white coloured liquid that keeps infections at bay by flushing out bacteria and dead cells from the intimate area. However, the degree of discharge, colour and consistency varies from one woman to another.

‘Vaginal discharge in a healthy woman is usually considered to be normal that signifies optimal functioning of the glands and internal hormonal secretions,’ says a consultant gynecologist. That said, excessive white or vaginal discharge, at times, could mean or be indicative of certain infections or a health crisis.

What could excessive white discharge signify?
Excessive white discharge at times can be normal and harmless. There are times when certain physiological changes in the body lead to excessive secretions; here are a few such circumstances.

Ovulation: Apart from the glands in the cervix and walls of the vagina that initiate a healthy discharge, hormones in the body also play a role in contributing to the same. ‘During ovulation the progesterone level in the body is high which leads to a heavy or continuous discharge from the vagina. This is normal and is a healthy sign in a woman of reproductive age,’ reassures the Dr. For the same reason you might notice a clear and steady discharge from your vagina for few days prior to your periods.

Sexual excitement: Vaginal discharge or secretions act as the perfect natural lubricant for a smooth and gentle intercourse. The hormones that sensually arouse you are also the ones that initiate a steady secretion from the vagina. At times, it could lead to excessive discharge, as compared to your normal secretions.

Pregnancy: A clear milky discharge from the vagina which might be mild with a musky smell is perfectly normal during pregnancy. Hormonal changes during pregnancy increase vaginal discharge too. This has a hidden benefit; though the excess flow can be annoying at times, vaginal secretions help keep urinary tract infections that are otherwise common during pregnancy at bay. The secretion is supposed to maintain a healthy environment in the area for good bacteria to thrive on. In fact the amount of the secretions can increase prior to labour, lubricating the birth canal for normal delivery. The only time you should worry about vaginal discharge during pregnancy is when you spot droplets of blood or experience spotting.

Stress: Modern day women are more prone to the perils of stress that reflects on their health and well-being. Stress is a major cause for hormonal imbalances within the body; this could lead to excessive vaginal discharge as well. Even though excessive discharge due to stress is considered harmless, it is not wise to ignore the signs of stress as it isn’t a healthy way of living.

When should you worry about excessive vaginal discharge?
Excessive vaginal discharge should raise an alarm if you notice the following signs accompanied with the same:

Change in colour of the secretions: If you notice that the colour of your vaginal secretions has changed from being a clear-milky fluid to yellow or is green in colour with a foul smell to it; this is likely to be a sign of an infection. ‘It could be indicative of a fungal, bacterial or viral infection. This sign could also serve to be an early symptom of a sexually transmitted disease,’ informs the Dr.

Change in consistency: If you notice a change in your secretions along with some pain and change in the colour it should make you wary enough to head to your doctor and get a thorough checkup done. ‘Sometimes in teens this can also be suggestive of worms infestation in the stomach,’ says the Dr.

Burning and itching sensation: Excessive discharge along with a burning or itching sensation indicates that the infection has got hold of your private areas and needs immediate medical attention.

Painful intercourse: Pain during intercourse despite the secretions by your vagina that helps to serve like a lubricant indicates that there is a chance of an infection or crisis that needs a thorough evaluation by the doctor.

What you can do?
Visit your gynecologist: It is better to visit a gynecologist when you experience any change in the secretions of your vagina to get a detailed evaluation done. ‘If your vaginal discharge indicates any kind of UTI, it can be treated effectively with medications. At times one might also be advised to go for a pap smear to be screened for cervical cancer which is common among women,’ says Dr Mehta. Treatment of an STD might be required if you suffer from one.

Keep your vaginal area clean: Hygiene plays an important role in keeping the vaginal area healthy and free of infections. So maintain high levels of cleanliness to keep your privates free of infections. Avoid perfumed washes and douches as they could disrupt the normal pH balance of the area. Washing with warm water and a mild vaginal wash twice a day should serve the purpose.

Have a balanced diet: In a subtle manner, diet also helps to maintain vaginal health and fight infections. Avoid foods that are acidic in nature and include more fruits and yoghurt, as this can neutralize the acid content in the body.

Get some rest: Adequate rest is essential as it strengthens the immune function, protecting you against various infections and it is also necessary for the optimal functioning of the human body.

Usually after a heart attack, the heart is unable to replace its dead cells and patients are often left with little option of another heart transplant or cell therapy that transplants heart cells into the patient's heart.

In far too many cases, however, the transplanted heart cells do not engraft well, resulting in poor recovery.

One reason for the engraftment problem is the quality of the heart cells. For a typical cell therapy, heart cells are made from different stem cells, but the quality of the heart cells will vary.

First author of the study that was conducted by Kyoto University, Dr. Shunsuke Funakoshi said that the cells of different maturation will be mixed and transplanted together.

During the research, Funakoshi took induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells that were reprogrammed from skin cells and made them into heart cells. Heart cells differentiated from iPS cells effectively go through all stages of development.

Currently, over a billion cells are needed for human heart cell therapies. Knowing which cells are best for the therapy should not only improve patient outcome, but also reduce the number of cells required, which would further reduce both the time of the preparation and invasiveness of the procedure.

The research is published in the journal Scientific Reports.
