Machine-Learning Models Can Help Detect Sepsis in Newborns Earlier

The world can be a harsh place, particularly in the first few months after a baby is born. During those precious moments, a newborn is exposed to a flurry of new experiences and stimuli including, unfortunately, foreign bacteria. Sepsis, the result of a bacterial infection in the circulatory system, is a major cause of infant mortality even in developed nations.

Rapid diagnosis of ill babies is important but can be a challenge in hospitals due to ambiguous clinical signs and test inaccuracies. Now, researchers at the Children’s Hospital of Philidelphia (CHOP) have found that by feeding machine-learning models regularly collected clinical data, they could identify cases of sepsis in newborns hours before they usually would. The research team published its findings in the journal PLOS ONE.

Quick Learners

To develop machine-learning models capable of detecting sepsis, the research team trained algorithms on retroactive sets of data with the goal of identifying sepsis at least four hours before clinicians had suspected the illness.

Using electronic health record data, such as vital signs like blood pressure and temperature, from 618 infants in the CHOP neonatal intensive care unit from 2014 to 2017, the team trained eight machine-learning models to compare vital signs to 36 potential indicators of infant sepsis. Because the data was retroactive, the research team was able to compare the machine-learning models’ accuracy to clinical findings. Of the eight models, six were able to accurately identify cases of sepsis up to four hours earlier than clinicians had.

Dr.Algorithm
The team concluded that with additional data to train on the models could become even more accurate over time. “Because early detection and rapid intervention is essential in cases of sepsis, machine-learning tools like this offer the potential to improve clinical outcomes in these infants,” said Aaron J. Masino, lead author of the study. According to Masino, the team’s findings are a key step in developing a real-time tool for use in hospitals. By following up with more clinical studies the team plans to evaluate the effectiveness of such a system in the hospital setting.

Ayurveda deems turmeric as one of the most important medicinal spices. Modern studies have reiterated the knowledge that all body systems benefit from the use of turmeric. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Taste and effect: Pungent and bitter, it has anti-inflammatory, cleansing, detoxifying and effects.
Positive effects: It benefits circulatory system, supports digestive fire, and reduces digestive toxins. Ayurveda prescribes it for liver, blood, digestive system, joints, and immune system issues.
Bioavailability: Turmeric is poorly absorbed in the body. It has less effect when used as a cooking spice.

Various uses
For asthma: Grate two inches raw turmeric and dry in the shade. Add 10 to 12 crushed black peppercorns. Cover well with honey. Take one teaspoon twice a day with warm milk.
To increase immunity: Boil half teaspoon turmeric powder or half-inch raw turmeric and three to four crushed black peppercorns in one glass of milk. Drink one hour before bedtime.

10 Natural Remedies for Swollen Feet and Ankles

Swelling in your feet and ankles is called edema, and there are a lot of things that can cause the problem, from high blood pressure to pregnancy. What’s happening is your body is having trouble fighting gravity to move blood and fluids back up your legs, so your ankles, feet, and even your legs can begin to swell.
Edema on its own is not harmful, but it is uncomfortable. If you are seeing one foot or leg swelling a lot more than the other, or your face is swelling, you do want to call your doctor, because the cause could be a blood clot, and you don’t want to wait to address that problem.
That uncomfortable swelling is not actually a disorder, just a symptom, and the best way to treat it is to treat the root cause. If you’re swelling because of pregnancy, it should go down not long after you deliver. Talk to your doctor to see what could be causing your swelling.
Whatever the reason, these remedies can help give you some relief while you sort out the cause of your edema.

1. Try a magnesium supplement
Magnesium deficiency can contribute to edema, and taking a supplement can help give you some relief. Most of the recommendations I’ve seen are for 200mg twice a day, but if you’re pregnant you’ll want to talk to your doctor about that first. The RDA for magnesium is 350mg per day, and your doctor might not want you taking an extra 400mg, since you’re also probably getting magnesium in your prenatal vitamin and your diet.
A six months pregnant lady said she started taking 250mg of magnesium in the evenings, and the difference in my swelling was dramatic without changing anything else.

2. Do a Little Yoga
Exercise can help improve your circulation, and yoga is a great way to get moving and really focus on that circulatory system. Of course, you’ll want to talk to your doctor before starting up with yoga, especially if you haven’t been doing it before. If you’re totally new to yoga, I highly recommend taking a class. A yoga instructor can not only help you overcome any hesitations you have about yoga, but she or he will make sure you are doing the poses properly and might even be able to suggest additional postures to help with your edema! Once you have a swing of how the poses feel, you can practice at home.

3. Soak in Tonic Water
This one might sound a little odd, but soaking in room temperature – or cold, if it’s not too uncomfortable – tonic water can help with swelling. The quinine and the bubbles can help reduce inflammation, and frankly just soaking your poor, swollen feet feels great!

4. Grab Some Grapefruit Essential Oil
A warm bath can also help with swelling, and you can give that water a boost with a few drops of grapefruit essential oil! You can also just fill a bucket with nice, warm water to soak in.
If baths aren’t your thing, you can also mix a few drops of grapefruit oil with a carrier oil like olive or sweet almond oil and give yourself a little foot and leg massage. As you rub your feet, ankles, and calves, focus your pressure upward, rather than downward or in a circular motion.

5. Do a Salt Water Soak
Adding a healthy dose of Epsom salt to the tub is another way to boost that bath. Like the grapefruit oil, you can also just use a bucket, if you’re only having swelling in your feet and ankles. If your calves are swollen, too, a bath is probably your best bet.
Epsom salts are like magic for swelling. Even before I was pregnant, I took occasional salt baths after a running long distances to help my muscles relax.

6. Treat Yourself to a Massage
A massage therapist can do wonders for swollen feet and ankles! Don’t be shy about mentioning the problem when you get to your appointment, so she or he can focus on getting things moving in your lower extremities.
If you are pregnant, I’d recommending finding a therapist who specializes in prenatal massage. A prenatal massage therapist will be much more knowledgeable about how to make you comfortable. Seriously, I have never had so many pillows around me in my life, but all of that really does help make it a more beneficial experience.

7. Get Some Support Hose
Support hose or compression gear can prevent swelling, especially from being on your feet. You can find compression socks that come knee- or thigh-high or full-on compression stockings. These suckers are hard to get on, because they’re meant to be pretty tight on your legs, but they can really make a difference.
I have read a lot of great experiences with compression socks, but I’ve found that they start out feeling amazing, and after about four hours they start to make my feet cramp. You can find footless compression stockings, so if you experience the same problem, that might be a good solution for you.

8. Elevate Those Feet
Gravity is not your friend when it comes to edema, so elevate your feet every chance you get! When you’re relaxing in the evening, prop your legs up on some pillows. Ideally, you want your feet above your heart. Take THAT, gravity!
If you work a day job, try to find a way to prop your feet up under your desk. Even elevating a bit can make a big difference in your swelling as the day goes on.

9. Make a Splash
Swimming or even floating in water can help with swollen feet and ankles. The pressure from the water can help get things moving in your legs, and floating gives your circulatory system a break from gravity’s constant pull. If you don’t have a pool, check out local gyms to see what they offer.

10. Drink Up!
Excess salt is a big contributor to swelling, and upping your fluid intake can help dilute the salt in your system. Aim for 8-10 glasses of water per day to flush things out. Even better? Try making cucumber-lemon water! Just drop a couple of cucumber and lemon slices in your glass, and enjoy! Both of these fruits have anti-inflammatory properties, so if gives that water an extra swelling-fighting punch.

Causes of Tingling Limbs and How to Treat it

This irritating tingling sensation may occur for several reasons, so it is important to know these 9 so that you can identify what’s causing the discomfort and what you need to do to treat the issue and ease the pain naturally.

1. Nerve pressure in the neck or back

Feeling pain and pressure coming from your neck and radiating into your arms, or pain that radiates from your back to your legs? It may be caused by injury, poor posture or arthritis. A Dr.  explains that physiotherapy can be a great solution that can relieve the unpleasant tingling sensation.

2. Vitamin B12 deficiency

If you feel tingling in both hands at the same time, it may be a vitamin B12 deficiency. If you feel fatigued and weak throughout the day, you may be suffering from anemia. Therefore, it's important that you perform the blood tests necessary so you can get the full picture and act accordingly.
You can get vitamin B12 from animal by-products, cereals, energy bars, soy products, tofu, soaked yeast, or by taking a dietary supplement. If you decide to take a dietary supplement, make sure to find out when and how to consume it so you can get the most out of it.

3. Carpal tunnel syndrome

Are you typing too much or have a physically demanding job? It turns out that repeated movements may eventually lead to the narrowing of the carpal tunnel located in the wrist. This occurs due to pressure on the median nerve, which in turn can lead to various symptoms, such as tingling in the hands and arm and even weakness in the palm of the hand, according to a Dr.
Diagnosis can be achieved through medical examinations performed by the family doctor; the first is the Phalen test, in which both hands are flexed for about half an hour to see if the symptoms appear, and the second is the tinnitus test, in which the wrist is tapped on and the symptoms are examined. In addition, an EMG test that checks the electrical activity of the muscle can determine whether nerve conduction in the median nerve is impaired.

4. Stenosis of the cervical spine or spinal cord

Stenosis of the cervical spine or spinal cord may put pressure on the spinal cord and/or nerve roots and cause a tingling sensation, says Dr. Esther Young, a neurologist at Rochester Hills Hospital in Michigan. Stenosis of these areas can be diagnosed by MRI or CT scan and can be treated with physical therapy or with epidural injections or surgery in more severe cases.

5. High blood sugar

High blood sugar levels act like a nerve toxin and can cause tingling in the hands and feet. A Dr.  points out that if you suffer from excessive thirst and hunger or frequent urination, consult your family doctor and ask for a referral to blood glucose testing or an A1C (Glucose Hemoglobin) test, which exposes the average blood glucose level in a three month period. Before it's performed it's important to note that lifestyle changes or taking appropriate medications can help you take control.

6. Under-active thyroid gland

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the gland does not produce enough hormones, leading to a slow metabolism. This can cause tingling, as well as fatigue, cold sensitivity, unexplained weight gain, dry skin, and hair loss. Hypothyroidism can be easily diagnosed with a blood test, and if you do not produce enough thyroid hormones, a synthetic replacement can be taken.

7. Multiple sclerosis

If you have a weakness that accompanies the tingling, plus symptoms such as double vision, walking difficulties, bladder control problems or bowel problems, there is a possibility that MS is the source of the problem, During the early stages of the disease, it's difficult to diagnose, but it can be detected by a combination of 3 different tests: blood test, MRI, and cerebrospinal fluid test. Dr. Young adds that there are various drugs that can slow the progression of the disease.

8. Circulatory problem

When you have circulatory problems, you might experience unpleasant tingling, but it should be noted that this tingling can also be felt when people feel tired or exhausted. If you feel tingling that does not stop and becomes permanent, something worse may be happening in your body, so consult your GP.

 9. Restless legs syndrome

Restless legs syndrome is a relatively common condition in which the nervous system causes an uncontrollable urge to move the legs, with numbness in the limbs being one of the most common symptoms of this syndrome. It should be noted that this syndrome is usually inherited and some believe that it's linked to low levels of dopamine in the body.
In simple cases of this syndrome, which are not associated with other diseases (such as diabetes or renal failure), there is no need for special treatment and making a number of lifestyle changes such as; not smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol and caffeine, as well as exercising regularly, is often enough.
If the tingling persists for a long time, consult your GP, but if it is sudden tingling that disturbs you, you should familiarize yourself with some natural and home-based treatments that can be used to relieve here. Here are four:

4 natural treatments for irritating tingles

1. Turmeric

Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, which helps improve blood flow throughout the body. In addition, its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce discomfort in the prickly place, as long as it is not chronic and incessant tingling that requires medical attention as soon as possible.

Preparation and treatment:

• Place a small pot on low heat, add a cup of milk, a teaspoon of turmeric and a little honey.
• Mix well and wait until the liquid reaches the desired drinking temperature.
• It is recommended to drink this drink once a day to improve blood circulation in the body.
• You can also massage the tingling area with an ointment you can prepare by mixing turmeric powder with water.

2. Hot compresses

In moments when you feel tingling, the first thing you can do is place a warm compress on the sensitive area. This will help increase blood supply to the prickly area. Moreover, this method will relax the muscles and nerves in that area.

Preparation and treatment:

• Dip a towel in hot water, squeeze it and place it on the desired area for 5-7 minutes.
• Repeat several times until the sense of numbness disappears.
• You can also use a heating pad or have a warm bath.

3. Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains manganese and potassium along with various B vitamins. The health benefits of cinnamon can help improve blood flow to your feet and hands, helping to treat numbness or tingling.

Preparation and treatment:

• Mix one teaspoon of cinnamon in a glass of hot water and drink every day.
• Another option is to mix a teaspoon of cinnamon together with a teaspoon of honey and consume this mixture every morning for several weeks.

4. Massage

Massaging the hands and feet can be very helpful when they're tingling, because it increases blood flow, reducing numbness and helps stimulate the nerves and muscles to improve their overall functioning.

Preparation and treatment:

• Pour a little warm olive or coconut oil on your palm and start massaging the tingling area, moving your fingers in a circular motion.
• Massage for at least 5 minutes and repeat as necessary.

A few words to sum up
Successful treatment depends on accurate diagnosis on the underlying cause of tingling. Of course, as with any other health issue, in order to prevent this problem, it is necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a healthy weight, a balanced diet, avoiding or limiting alcohol consumption and stopping smoking. In some cases of tingling and other symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, discomfort may be reduced by medication, as instructed by the family doctor.
