Breast cancer raises heart disease risk

Researchers have found that postmenopausal women with breast cancer are at greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

“Heart disease appears more commonly in women treated for breast cancer because of the toxicities of chemotherapy, radiation therapy and use of aromatase inhibitors, which lower estrogen,” said a Prof.

The cardiovascular effects may occur more than five years after radiation exposure, with the risk persisting for up to 30 years.

“Heart-healthy lifestyle modifications will decrease both the risk of recurrent breast cancer and the risk of developing heart disease,” she said.

The goal of the study was to compare and evaluate risk factors for cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women who are survivors of breast cancer and women without breast cancer.

For the findings, more than 90 postmenopausal breast cancer survivors were compared with 192 postmenopausal women.

The researchers found that postmenopausal women who are survivors of breast cancer showed a markedly stronger association with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, atherosclerosis,
hypertriglyceridemia and abdominal obesity, which are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
The risk of cardiovascular mortality similarly increased to match death rates from cancer itself.

“Women should schedule a cardiology consultation when breast cancer is diagnosed and continue with ongoing follow-up after cancer treatments are completed,” she added.

High dose of Vitamin C protects against deadly Metabolic Syndrome

According to researchers, Vitamin Chas tremendous benefits as it protects against deadly metabolic syndrome.  higher intake of Vitamin V halts a potentially deadly cycle of antioxidant disruption and health-related problems in metabolic syndrome patients.

Vitamin C is found in fresh vegetables and fruits, source of Vitamin E include wheat germ, almonds, and various seeds and oils. As per dietary guidelines 65-90 mgm daily of Vitamin C and 15 mgm of Vitamin E.

About 35 % of the U.S. adult population suffers from metabolic syndrome. A patient is considered to have metabolic syndrome if he/ she has at least 3 of the following conditions- abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, low levels of good cholesterol and high levels of triglycerides.

What these findings are really saying to people as we move out of the tich-food holiday season and into January is eat fruits and vegetables, said a Prof. Eat 5-10 servings a day and then you'll get the fiber, you'll get Vitamin C and you'll really protect your gut with all of those good things.

A diet high in saturated fat results in chronic low-grade inflammation in the body that in turn leads to the development of metabolic syndrome, a serious condition associated with cognitive dysfunction and dementia as well as being a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, fatty live disease and type 2 diabetes.

Findings of study suggest the type of eating that leads to metabolic syndromwe can prompt imbalances in the gut microbiome, with impaired gut function contributing to toxins in the bloodstream, resulting in Vitamin c depletion, which subsequently impairs the trafficking of Vitamin E.

It's a treadmill of antioxidant disruption that serves to make a bad situation worse, antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E, offer defense against the oxidative stress brought on by inflammation and the associated free radicals, unstable molecules that can damage the body's cells.

Vitamins C actually protects Vitamin E, so when you've lipid peroxidation, Vitamin E is used up and Vitamin C can regenerate it, said a researcher. If you don't have the Vitamin C, the Vitamin E gets lost and then you lose both of those antioxidants and end up in this vicious cycle of depleting your antioxidant protection.

Lipid peroxidation is the oxidative degradation of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are a major component of living cells, it's the process by which free radicals try to stabilize themselves by stealing elelctrons from cell membranes, causing damage to the cell.

If there's too much fat in the diet, it causes injury to the gut, Prof. said. Bacterial cell wallks can then leak from the gut and slip into circulation in the body, and they're chased down by neutrophils.

Neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cells, a key part of the immune system.

Neutrophils attack bacteria with hypochlorous acid- bleach.

The white blood cells are scrubbing with bleach and that destroys Vitamin C, Prof. said. The body is destroying its own protection because it got tricked by the gut dysbiosis into thinking there was a bacterial invasion.

And without intervention, the process keeps repeating.

People with metabolic syndrome can eat the same amount of Vitamin C as people without metabolic syndrome but have lower plasma concentrations of Vitamin C, Prof. said. We're suggesting that's because this slippage of bacterial cell walls causes the while body to mount that anti-inflammatory response.

People who eat slowly are less likely to suffer from obesity

People who eat slowly are less likely to become obese or develop metabolic syndrome, a cluster of heart disease, diabetes and stroke risk factors, according to a study.

Metabolic syndrome occurs when someone has any of three risk factors that include abdominal obesity, high fasting blood sugar, high blood pressure, high triglycerides and/or low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

Researchers  evaluated 642 men and 441 women, average age 51.2 years, who did not have metabolic syndrome in 2008.

They divided the participants into three groups depending on how they described their usual eating speed: slow, normal or fast.

After five years, the researchers found that fast eaters were more likely (11.6 per cent) to have developed metabolic syndrome than normal eaters (6.5 per cent) or slow eaters (2.3 per cent).

Faster eating speed was associated with more weight gain, higher blood glucose and larger waistline, they found.

"Eating more slowly may be a crucial lifestyle change to help prevent metabolic syndrome," said a cardiologist.

"When people eat fast they tend not to feel full and are more likely to overeat. Eating fast causes bigger glucose fluctuation, which can lead to insulin resistance," said the author of the preliminary research.
