Grandmas may be key to species survival

  • New research on killer whales suggests that post-menopausal grandmothers play a powerful role in the survival of generations that follow them.

The phenomena of menopause is a conundrum that has long baffled evolutionary biologists. But new research on killer whales suggests that this is because grandmothers play a powerful role in the survival of subsequent generations.  

The Grandmother Hypothesis

Around age 50, a woman's ovaries stop producing eggs, officially liberating her from her reproductive responsibilities and biological functions: Menstruation, pregnancy, lactation, repeat. Though many primates die out after this point, humans live on decades after menopause. From an evolutionary perspective, this suggests that women are essential to the survival of our species beyond their direct ability to bear children.

Enter "The Grandmother Hypothesis," which has theorized that by surviving long past menopause, a woman improves the survival and reproduction of her children's children. This way, she ensures the continuation of her own genes into the next generation. In the past, skeptics dismissed the hypothesis, arguing it's always more genetically beneficial for a female to have her own children, rather than throwing in the towel half-way through and using her time and energy to help raise her children's children.

But a new paper published in PNAS last month tested and significantly backed the powerful benefits of having post-reproductive grandmothers in killer whales communities.

New research on “postmenopausal” whales

Like humans, female whales live decades past their reproductive potential. And, like humans, they can continue to have babies after they become grandmothers. In a new study, researchers sought to find out if post-reproductive grandmother whales helped their offspring better than grandmothers that were still reproducing. Of course, to get the genetic "fitness" benefits, grandmothers and their offspring need to be able to interact. In killer whale communities, offspring do not leave their mothers once they reach reproductive age. This results in a close-knit matrilineal family structure in which a grandma whale groups with her offspring.

To do the test, the researchers collected data on two groups of killer whales. One group in the coastal waters of Washington State and the other in British Columbia, Canada. Genealogical whale relationships were inferred from long-term observations of social organization, and mothers were identified by their repeated association with young calves. The researchers recorded whale births and deaths, and also controlled for the important environmental factor of salmon abundance.

What the researchers discovered was that not only did grandmothers significantly increase the survival of their grandoffspring, but grandmothers were even more beneficial to their grandcalves when they were no longer reproducing. 

 

Why grandmother whales are vital resources

The study found that if a whale lost its grandmother, its survival rate took a sharp dip within the two years of her death. This was true even of whales who were up to 20 years old. When salmon abundance was lower, the role of the grandmother whale was found to be more significant, suggesting that the grandma whale's accumulation of ecological knowledge was a vital resource for the survival of whale families.

After all, whales are gregarious creatures. Young killer whales need guidance in finding food after they have been weaned. Not only do grandma whales help raise and share their own food with their grandoffspring, they bequeath decades of foraging wisdom onto the next generation, guiding them to the best feeding spots. The researchers noted that as salmon populations continue to decline due to ecological threats, whale grandmothers may become increasingly important.

This beneficial effect was enhanced when the grandmother whale was no longer reproducing. It makes sense, as she wouldn't be using her time, energy, and resources being pregnant, lactating, or ensuring her new children survives. This corroborates previous studies that found that menopause might be beneficial because it means that competition for resources is thinned out between generations of females. This could be why in humans, women on average tend to stop reproducing almost right around the time when their offspring start.

The power of grandmas

The authors claim that their findings help explain why killer whales have evolved the longest post-reproductive life span of all nonhuman animals: Natural selection has decided that post-reproductive grandmas are extremely valuable resources. Perhaps this is why humans have a longer post-reproductive life span than other primates. The study offers an enchanting example of nature's symmetry, and proves the value of all phases of feminine family roles in the evolution and continuation of the human race.

Ultimately, this study proves what many of us intuitively knew: Grandma is a badass. It's grandmothers, and the generations of matriarchs before them, we can thank for our existence.

Baby’ aspirin may cut breast cancer risk, says study

Regular use of low-dose "baby" aspirin, a common pain reliever, may reduce the risk of breast cancer in women, a new research has found.

For the study, published in the journal Breast Cancer Research, researchers analysed data from more than 57,000 women who were part of California's Teacher's Study.

The researchers saw an overall 16 per cent lower risk of breast cancer in women who reported using low-dose aspirin at least three times per week.

"The study found an interesting protective association between low-dose aspirin and breast cancer," said lead author Christina Clarke from the Cancer Prevention Institute of California.
"We did not by and large find associations with the other pain medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen. We also did not find associations with regular aspirin since this type of medication is taken sporadically for headaches or other pain, and not daily for prevention of cardiovascular disease," Clarke said.

This study differed from other studies that have looked at aspirin and cancer risk because it focused on the dose levels of the aspirin women had taken and tracked the frequency of the use of low-dose aspirin as opposed to regular aspirin.

It was also able to look in detail at subtypes of breast cancer.

"We already knew that aspirin is a weak aromatase inhibitor and we treat women with breast cancer with stronger aromatase inhibitors since they reduce the amount of estrogen postmenopausal women have circulating in their blood," said Leslie Bernstein of the Department of Population Sciences, Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope in Monrovia, California.

"We thought that if aspirin can inhibit aromatase, it ought to reduce the likelihood that breast cancer would develop and it could also be an effective way to improve breast cancer patients' prognosis once they no longer take the more potent aromatase inhibitors," Bernstein said.

"Aspirin also reduces inflammation, which may be another mechanism by which aspirin taken regularly can lower risk of breast cancer developing or recurring," Bernstein added.

The researchers said they chose to focus on low-dose aspirin, because not only is it inexpensive and readily available, but because there are already a lot of people taking it for prevention of other diseases such as heart disease and even colon cancer.

Hormone Therapy Has A Stronger Impact On A Woman’s Quality Of Life Than Chemo, Study Finds

A French study has found that hormone therapy has a greater impact on a woman’s quality of life than chemotherapy two years after a breast cancer diagnosis.

Hormone therapy (also called endocrine therapy) is given to breast cancer patients whose cancer is fueled be either estrogen or progesterone, or both. Roughly two out of every three breast cancers is hormone-positive. Hormone therapy is systemic — meaning that it targets cancer cells throughout the body, not just in the breast. It is typically taken for five to ten years.

Chemotherapy can be given before or after breast cancer surgery, and is the primary treatment for metastatic breast cancer. It is given in cycles, which can least weeks to months at a time. Chemo attacks fast-growing cells like cancer cells, but also the quick-growing cells in your bone marrow, hair follicles, and digestive tract.

Side effects for both treatments can range from mild to severe. Yet a common perception is that chemotherapy has worse side effects and more negatively impacts a woman’s quality of life. This study found that perception to be wrong.

The study was published in the Annals of Oncology and was conducted by Institut Gustave Roussy. The data was pulled from patients who were part of the CANTO cohort (“CANcer TOxicities”). This cohort is a group of 20,000 breast cancer patients who will be studied over a period of ten years, with the specific goal of quantifying and preventing chronic toxicities related to treatment.

Researchers measured quality of life in 4,262 breast cancer patients from the CANTO cohort, using two different tools: one which assessed general quality of life in patients with all types of cancer (EORTC QLQ-C30), and a tool that specifically assessed quality of life in breast cancer patients (QLQ-BR23).

All the patients in the study had localized breast cancer that was stage I, II, or III. Quality of life was measured at the time of diagnosis, one year after the diagnosis, and two years after the diagnosis.

For all of the women in this study, the primary treatment method was surgery. Some of them also had chemotherapy and/or radiation. About 75-80% of them had to take hormone therapy for a minimum of 5 years. Roughly one-third of the women were premenopausal, with the other two-thirds being postmenopausal.

Researchers found that, overall, quality of life was worse two years after diagnosis for patients who were taking hormone therapy, especially patients who were menopausal. Quality of life was also worse for a longer period of time compared to chemo. Hormone therapy had a detrimental effect on a variety of areas and symptoms, including role and social function, pain, insomnia, systemic therapy side-effects, breast symptoms, emotional function, and future perspective recovery.

Chemo had a negative impact on physical and cognitive function, dyspnea, financial difficulties, body image, and breast symptoms. But, while rough at the onset, chemo lasts only a short time in comparison to hormone therapy, and was not shown to have a persistent negative impact on quality of life at two years post-diagnosis.

The effects of each treatment were different for premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Chemo had a stronger negative effect on quality of life for premenopausal women at first — especially on cognitive function. But for postmenopausal patients, hormone therapy was more frequently associated with lowered quality of life.


The findings of the study suggest a significant downside to hormone therapy, and this is something patients need to be made aware of. However, the benefits can certainly outweigh the risks in many situations. Additional support for patients undergoing hormone therapy should be considered.

“It is important in the future that we are able to predict which women are going to develop severe symptoms with anti-hormonal treatment so that we can support them,” said Dr. Inès Vaz-Luis, a specialist breast cancer oncologist and researcher who directed the study. “It will also be important in the future to differentiate prior to treatment patients who are at high risk of relapse from those at lower risk in order to tailor hormone treatment. This may be done to avoid escalation of anti-hormonal treatment in certain patients.

“Hormone therapy is extremely effective in treating breast cancer, resulting in a reduction by approximately 50% in the risk of relapse. The finding of adverse effects does not in any way put into question the excellent risk/benefit ratio of this treatment.”

Magnesium can cause sudden cardiac death

A new prospective study based on data from the Women's Health Initiative found a potential inverse association between dietary magnesium and fatal coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women.

The study, which also showed a trend between magnesium and sudden cardiac death in this population, is published in the Journal of Women's Health, a peer-reviewed publication from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.

Charles Eaton, MD, Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and a large team of researchers from various institutions coauthored the article entitled "Association of Dietary Magnesium Intake with Fatal Coronary Heart Disease and Sudden Cardiac Death: Findings from the Women's Health Initiative."

The researchers examined magnesium intake at baseline for more than 153,000 postmenopausal women and identified the development of fatal coronary heart disease and sudden cardiac death over the subsequent 10.5 years of follow-up. The data revealed that higher magnesium intake was associated with a statistically significant risk reduction in fatal coronary heart disease and a reduction in the risk of sudden cardiac death.

Postmenopausal women may suffer from poor sleep quality, sleep disorders and shorter sleep duration

 Sleep is extremely important. It is a break from the long day at work, the end of the day, and gives us a new day to look forward to when we wake up. Biologically, it is restorative and helps the body recover from diseases, disorders, tiredness, fatigue, etc. A good night's sleep is especially important when you have had a long day, are extremely tired, are not keeping well, or are going through transition phases physically.

One such transition phase is that of menopause. Menopause is when the production of hormones responsible for reproduction comes to a halt in a woman's body. The body experiences various changes through the phase of menopause. A recent study has found that sleep complications are also common during the menopausal phase.

The study was published online in Menopause – the journal of The North American Menopause Society. The study compared sleep quality, duration and disorders between postmenopausal and premenopausal women, and found that sleep problems increase postmenopause.

Statistically, also, sleep disorders are more common during menopause and affect 40 to 60 per cent women.

Poor sleep quality, disorders, and short duration sleep can have adverse health effects. They lead to poor quality of life, high risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, depression, and anxiety. Since certain sleep disorders like sleep apnea are also age-related and are more common in people of older age, women of postmenopausal age are at an elevated risk of such disorders as well.

The study found that postmenopausal women required more time to fall asleep, an excess of thirty minutes when compared with premenopausal women. They were also found to be more likely to suffer from insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea.
