Ways to treat migraine headaches without medication

Migraines are intense throbbing headaches, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. According to Mayo Clinic, the cause of migraines is still largely unknown, though migraine sufferers can often identify their personal triggers. Triggers can be anything from hormonal changes to stress and from sun glare to a change in the barometric pressure during a storm.

These disabling headaches effect a whopping 36 million Americans, according to the American Migraine Foundation. One in four households in America has a member who suffers from migraines, so whether you or a loved one, use these home remedies to prevent migraines and soothe pain during

an attack.

1. Vicks VapoRub. Alison Jacobson, the blogger behind Safety Mom, says that when she has a headache, applying Vicks VapoRub to her temples and forehead is so powerful, it reduces pain and pressure almost immediately. The proof for this remedy comes from the Department of Neurology at Thomas Jefferson University, which found intense pain from migraines was reduced after two hours following the application of a menthol gel similar to Vicks VapoRub. The soothing effects of menthol are also found in peppermint essential oils. Lori, of the Health Extremist blog, claims a homemade mixture of peppermint essential oil and water or coconut oil, when applied directly to the forehead and temples, relieves pain within 30 minutes to one hour.

2. Ice and banana peel compress. This might sound a bit wacky, until you realize ice wrapped in a banana peel is nothing more than a potassium-rich cold compress. Mayo Clinic recommends applying a cold compress to the head and neck in order to dull the pain of a migraine. Place a banana peel on your forehead with ice, as recommended by Peas Health, you get the added benefit of potassium absorbed directly through the skin.

3. Olive oil. A study by the Divisions of Adolescent Medicine in Providence, RI found that olive oil, as well as fish oil, is effective at reducing the frequency, duration and severity of recurrent migraines in adolescents. The reason behind the success of olive oil and fish oil lies in the fact that both contain long chains of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, building blocks for hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls, and inflammation, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

4. Lavender oil. Just two drops of lavender in a pot of boiling water can be enough to soothe your throbbing migraine. Inhale the lavender vapors and feel relief wash over you, recommends Everyday Health. A study published in European Neurology suggests inhaling lavender essential oil for 15 minutes is an effective and safe treatment for migraine headaches. It works because lavender has properties that reduce anxiety, stabilize mood, soothe muscle spasms, and reduce hypertension.

5. Eat more flax seed. Flax seed is a superfood that has been used since the time of the ancient Egyptians to treat constipation, hot flashes and breast pain, as well as high cholesterol and migraines, according to Migraine.com. Flax seed is high in fiber and omega-3 essential fatty acids, which improve brain function and lower the risk of heart disease. Wholesomeone recommends mixing flaxseeds in with a smoothie, oatmeal or even just with water to reap the benefits. You may be surprised that by introducing flaxseed into your diet, you can decrease the frequency of migraines.

6. Honey. The Foundation for Advancement in Cancer Therapy (FACT) has found that eating two teaspoons of raw honey during mealtimes can prevent migraine attacks. It is also effective at quelling symptoms. FACT recommends a heaping tablespoon of honey at the first sign of migraine symptoms. Honey does not need to be digested and absorbs directly into the blood stream, making it a quick and effective treatment. Honey is also soothing to the stomach, making it a perfect treatment for people who suffer from nausea during a migraine attack.

7. Peanut Butter and ginger. This treatment might sound awfully strange, but holistic therapists swear by the combination as an effective migraine solution. Peas Health explains, that by applying a paste made from peanut butter and grated ginger directly to the temples, the body absorbs magnesium and arginine. People who suffer from migraines often have low levels of magnesium, as found in a study by the University of Maryland Medical Center, and according to Defy Medical, arginine is a chemical precursor to nitric oxide, which acts as a blood vessel-widening agent. Thus, a combination of the two can be just the right cocktail to release pressure.

8. Stretch your neck. Muscle-tension can trigger or exacerbate a migraine. Stretch for 20 minutes twice daily to prevent a headache before it occurs and to relieve the pain once you've been afflicted. Health.com recommends moving your chin forward, upward and toward each shoulder, holding each position for five seconds and then relaxing for five seconds. You can also do shoulder shrugs and neck isometrics by pressing your palm into your forehead and against each side of your head.

People who suffer from migraines know how debilitating these headaches can be. In fact, according to the Migraine Research Foundation, 113 million work days are lost annually to migraine and other headaches. These home remedies just might offer you the relief you so desperately need.

Unusual Uses Of Vicks Vapo Rub

Any one who has a cold, runs to get a bottle of Vicks VapoRub. However, as we’re going to discover today, it does more than just clear your chest.

1. Insect repellent- To start this list, we thought we’d go with something out of the ordinary; did you know that Vicks VapoRub will repel insects? Thanks to the cedar leaf oil it contains, the product can be dabbed onto your clothes and even your ears, elbows, knees, and neck before heading outside on a sunny day. While the smell isn't too strong for us, the menthol will keep all bugs and critters away. If you enjoy camping trips, it can also be used for bug bites because it relieves itching.

2. Relief  from headache - Of all the pains we experience in life, the dull ache in the forehead has to be one of the most frustrating. Normally coming from nowhere to ruin our day, headaches can actually be alleviated by applying Vicka VapoRub under the nose. As you breathe in deeply, the menthol should get to work and clear any problems.

3. Tears for a shot ! Admittedly, this isn't going to be for everybody but professional actors/actresses actually use Vicks VapoRub if they need to cry for a photoshoot or stage performance; a little under the eyes will allow a tear or two.

4. Relief from bruises  - If you’ve noticed the early stages of a bruise, combine the Vicks VapoRub with some salt and the mixture should prevent an ugly purple wound from developing.

5. Save furniture from pets - If you own a cat and they like to scratch on things, some Vicks VapoRub will work wonders here because your cat won’t like the smell. Whether it’s a wall or a door, you can increase their life by deterring your feline friend..

6. Easy Aromatherapy Solution - If you want to transmit a beautiful scent into the air, make sure you have some Vicks added to your air freshener and it’ll soon circulate around the whole room. If you’re ill or experiencing chest congestion, this is a great way to turn the environment in your favor.
7.  Relief from Acne - At first, you might laugh a little and then click away but this is a serious suggestion. If you apply Vicks VapoRub to acne, it will soon dry and soothe the skin (only when applied numerous times in a day!).

8.Heals Wound  - Of course, we have the likes of Neosporin to deal with splinters and cuts but what if you run out? Well, this is where Vicks comes in because it should speed up the healing process while preventing access for bacteria and germs.

9. Soothes Earache - Along with a headache, an earache is another pain we could do without. Assuming your earache is caused by a common cold, you can ease pain with a Vicks VapoRub cotton ball. As you rub the cotton ball around in your ear a little, the Vicks should start easing the pain.

10. Rescue For Squeaky Door - Do you have a door that always squeaks when opening or closing? If so, Vicks VapoRub often works as an emergency replacement for oil.

11. Eczema Relief - After applying Vicks to the affected area, many people find relief and a reduction in inflammation.

12.  Cracked Heel Cure - Especially during the winter, dryness is common for both the hands and heels. Over time, the skin begins to crack and this causes pain and discomfort. With VapoRub, we have a product that will hydrate the skin and therefore prevent/fix cracking; make sure you cover with a bandage after applying.

13. Fungal Toenail Remedy - As well as not looking too nice, nail fungus will quickly infect the toes thus causing discoloration and thickening. With the latter, the nail is pushed further and further away from the toes until it falls away. In recent years, scientists have experimented with numerous solutions only to find VapoRub as the ideal one thanks to the thymol it contains.
Before applying, wash and dry your feet extensively. From here, try to get into every crack and corner (and even under the nail, if possible!). As long as you apply a band aid to keep the toe clean each time, you should see results in a minimum of ten days.

14.   Tennis Elbow Treatment - Since Vicks contains both menthol and camphor, it can be a very good treatment for tennis elbow. As long as you work with the doctor and possibly a therapist to deal with the underlying cause, the VapoRub works as a topical analgesic and this means the minor aches should be removed in the short-term.

15. Soothes Burn  - If you recently burned yourself from the steam of cooking vegetables, for example, the first step should always be to run it under cold water but then relief can be gained from Vicks.

16.  Moisturizer - Quick and simple, Vicks works as a moisturizer for your skin if you don’t have anything else in the house.

17. Removes Wart - After applying some Vicks VapoRub to the affected area, cover with a bandage or band aid and then place your sock over the top. If you can apply it once or twice a day for the next two weeks, the wart should disappear.

18.  Lip Plumper - Nowadays, many people apply VapoRub to the lips because it has so many benefits. With the menthol, it should make them feel softer while also making them look thicker. Of course, the petroleum jelly will keep them moisturized; this being said, it isn't a solution for dry lips because this can cause irritation.
19.  Covering Smells - On a day-to-day basis, there are many unpleasant smells that can occur from a baby’s diaper to removing the trash. While holding our breath works in the short-term, it doesn’t help with removing the smell in the long-term. With a combination of the Vicks air freshener we discussed previously and a little applied under the nose, you’ll be immune to all those nasty scents.

20. Soothes Aching Muscles - After working out, it isn't long before the trained muscles start to ache (the next day is always difficult after ‘leg day’!). To remove the aching somewhat, a layer of Vicks applied with a warm towel will relieve pain and improve recovery; this is something many sportspeople do after an event.
21. Race Horses To Focus   - Often, racehorses can get distracted by the smell of mares so a little Vicks under the nostrils of your horse will keep them focused for the run ahead.

22. Fades Stretch Mark - If you don’t feel confident when your stretch marks are on show, the regular application of Vicks VapoRub can help and you should see a difference within a couple of weeks.
23.Prevents Infection  - As we saw earlier, Vicks is useful when treating splinters and cuts but it applies to most wounds where infection is a likely problem.

24.  Shower Bomb - Just recently, there has been several commercials for the so-called ‘shower disks’ containing Vicks VapoRub and this is something else people seem to love. After placing the disk in the shower, the vapors should aid any sniffling or cold you’ve been experiencing; the steam combines with the Vicks to help your sinuses.

25.Preventions Pets From Peeing On Carpets - Finally, having an open bottle of this product near rugs and mats should deter your pets which means you won’t have to walk in to find a wet rug where they’ve decided to pee.

26.  Vicks Vaporub for Colds. Vicks VapoRub is an age-old mentholated topical cream intended to relieve head, throat, and chest stuffiness.

Stops cough immediately, by rubbing Vicks on your soles and putting a pair of socks at night, gives you relief from cough at night.

Quick relief from aching muscles, as by applying Vicks, it increases blood circulation, providing instant relief.

10 simple ways to deal with an ingrown toenail at home

An ingrown toenail is a chronic disease when, for various reasons, the growing nail plate is inserted into the soft tissues of the lateral ridges of the toe. There are various methods of conservative and surgical treatment of this disease, but at the initial stages, before complications arise, a person can try to treat ingrown toenails at home.

Most often the big toe is affected. The disease occurs in several stages. It leads to discomfort and soreness in walking, and in the future - to inflammation of the tissues, their reddening, the release of light serous and bloody fluid, edema. The affected area can increase significantly in volume.
With the subsequent addition of staphylococcal infection, suppuration and other (often serious) complications arise that require emergency medical care. These complications are especially dangerous for people suffering from blood circulation disorders in the lower extremities and diabetes mellitus. Let’s look at 10 simple ways to deal with an ingrown toenail at home-

1. Wash Foot with Castile Soap. Mix this soap with water and put your feet there for about 20-30 minutes.

2. Onion Juice Treatment. Blend onion and add some drops of lemon juice there. Then apply the mixture to the necessary area and wrap with cotton cloth.

3. Treat with Vicks Vapo rub. Smash garlic and mix with Vicks Vapo rub. Apply to your nail and wrap with cotton cloth.

4. Aloe Vera Gel. Apply this remedy to the necessary areas two-three times a day.

5. Essential Oils. Take coconut oil and add some drops of any essential oil there. Apply two times a day.

6. Neem. Boil neem leaves in water and apply neem water to your toenail.

7. Hot and Cold Foot Bath. Take two tabs: one with cold water, the other with the mixture of hot water with Epsom salt. Place your feet in cold water, then in hot water.

8. Garlic. Smash garlic and mix it with olive oil. Apply this remedy for 5 days.

9. Lemon Juice and Honey. Mix honey with lemon juice, apply to your toenail for 30 minutes.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar. Mix it with water, fill the tub and place your feet there for 30 minutes.

Amazing Uses Of Vicks' VapoRub

When you hear the word Vick's, at once you think of cold and think that it can be used only for cold. Just continue to read and learn the various uses of Vick's to amaze you.

1. Soothe Earaches
For mildly painful earaches, put some VapoRub onto a ball of cotton and insert it into your ear to reduce the discomfort. Be careful though, it should merely sit gently in the cup of your ear. Whatever you do, do not push it all the way into your ear canal!

2. Aromatherapy
If your humidifier has an aromatherapy function, then you can add some VapoRub to it, so that it can circulate around your whole room. This is the perfect way to get rid of congestion if you're ill, or simply to freshen up a room with the soothing smell of Vick's.

3. Ease muscle pain
If your muscles are sore and achy, rubbing a bit of VapoRub on your muscles after an intense workout will help you feel a lot better. Trust us, it really works!

4. Lip balm
Apply a bit of VapoRub to your lips to make them fuller and softer. VapoRub contains menthol, which is known to be a natural lip plumper. Since it is also made out of petroleum jelly, it will make them a lot softer at the same time. Be sure not to apply this to cracked or chapped lips, as this may cause some irritation.

5. Cover up bad smells
If you're surrounded by terrible odors, simply put a little VapoRub under your nostrils. However, take care not to get it inside your nose! The powerful and unique smell is actually really effective at blocking out those smells we'd rather not experience.
6. Soothe tennis elbow
Your forehand on the court was the bomb, but unluckily, all you've got to show for it is your throbbing in your elbow. Rubbing a little VapoRub onto your elbow will ease your aches and pains, and get you back on the court in no time at all.

7. Soften your heels
If you have got dry and cracked heels, there's no need to despair! Simply rub some VapoRub onto your heels before going to bed and wrap them in a pair of soft socks to seal in the amazing moisturizing properties.

8. Pimple Buster
Got a huge spot on your face that you think everyone is looking at? Dab some Vicks on it to dry it out and make it disappear.

9. Headaches
If you're suffering from a sinus headache, inhaling the vapors can help open your clogged airways to relieve the pressure. All you have to do is rub a small bit of Vicks under your nose. If you're suffering from a non-sinus headache, try rubbing a small amount of Vicks onto your temples - this is supposed to relieve the pressure you can feel from your headache.

10. Nail Fungus
Many of the compounds that make up Vicks VapoRub are anti-fungal and, as a result, it can prevent the growth of fungus on your nails. Simply apply it to your nails and let it get to work.

11. Itch and Sting/Bite Relief
Grandmas across the globe have been using Vicks to stop itching and pain from outdoor encounters for many years. Simply rub it into the affected area and let those magical ingredients do their thing.

12. Nausea
Mint has always been a popular go-to for people suffering from nausea. To combat nausea, either rub some Vicks under your nose, or create a facial steam to inhale.

13. Burns
A minor burn can be soothed by using Vicks. This is because the camphor, along with some of the other ingredients present in this ointment, have the ability to heal burns and numb the pain.

14. Creaky Doors
If you have a really annoying creaky door, but can't get your hands on some oil or WD40, then try rubbing a bit of Vicks on the creaky hinges.

15. Bruises
Vicks, thanks to the camphor and menthol present in it, is able to help heal bruises faster. This is because the aforementioned ingredients help increase circulation. Simply rub some ointment onto the bruise to help it heal.
