Health Checks Worth Doing on a Regular Basis

Illness is something we as humans are forever dreading, especially since we know some cases can be chronic or life-threatening. The worst part is, we don’t realize we're ill until the symptoms become unavoidable. By following the self-checks below you can assure yourself of your body's health - they’re quick, easy and definitely worth knowing! You’d be surprised to see what the smallest sign in your body may indicate.

1. Check your eyes for cholesterol levels
A lack of white in your eyes normally indicates that you’re tired or hung-over, but surprisingly enough, excess white in your eyes, such as a white line circling your iris, might be indicative of high cholesterol levels. Finding that your eyelids have a flat, yellowish color with velvety patches is also a serious sign. Do not let this symptom go unnoticed and risk getting further complications, such as coronary heart disease, which can lead to heart attacks in the future. See your GP to get your cholesterol checked and treated!

2. Count your moles to check for skin diseases
Moles are generally harmless, but if you find that you have more than 50 moles on your body, take this as a big warning sign, especially if they are multi-colored, growing in size, seem inflamed, or have a ragged edge. If you notice any of these signs in your moles, a good idea would be to regularly keep a record of their development by taking photos so it would be easier for your doctor to inspect them. If your moles also start to redden, become itchy or even bleed, seek medical advice as soon as possible. Such unusual-looking moles may be the cause of a type of skin cancer called malignant melanoma. Take our moles test to see if you know your moles.

3. Look for signs before you flush the toilet
Our excretions can also tell us about the health of our intestines, our digestion and our level of hydration. Every stool color, for instance, indicates different dietary causes or even problems. For example, a yellow color indicates excess fats, due to a malabsorption disorder such as celiac disease. What is most worrying is finding black or red stools, which may signify stomach or intestinal bleeding. These call for prompt medical attention. Urine can also be checked for its color: A pale color signifies good health, whereas a dark yellow color might mean you're dehydrated and need to increase your intake of water.

4. Check your eyebrows for thyroid health
If you notice an unusual lack of thickness in your eyebrows, it could be that you are suffering from an underactive thyroid, which means that your thyroid gland is not producing enough hormones. You may need to speak to a doctor, especially if you are also gaining weight and feeling tired and/or depressed. A blood test should easily confirm this problem. If left untreated, it might lead to heart disease, the appearance of goiters, pregnancy complications and other health issues.

5. Watch your stomach for signs of Ovarian cancer
Bloating in your stomach area can have a range of different causes, including menstruation, intolerance to dairy products, eating too fast, constipation, medical side-effects, and a typically common assumption - weight gain. However, did you know this could also be the cause of very serious health conditions? Ovarian cancer is one of them, and its symptoms also include nausea and persistent pain or cramps in the stomach or back. Speak to a doctor if you experience these in a severe way so you can treat it in its early stages. Reduce general stomach bloating by eating more slowly, consuming less carbonated drinks, and avoiding chewing gum and drinking through straws.

6. Check your breathing by doing some step-ups
Have you been feeling more tired than usual after climbing up a flight of stairs? This can also be directly connected to your health. Doing some exercise can both act as a test for yourself and also as a practice. Step-ups are mostly recommended because they elevate the heart rate and hence our breathing. For this exercise, you must find a relatively high step (not higher than your hips) and step up and down. Try doing 70 of these in three minutes and then put your fingers on your pulse to check it. If it’s over 100 and you’re still out of breath 10 minutes after the exercise, then you need to consider exercising more frequently. Lack of exercise can lead to serious diseases such as obesity, breast cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even early death.

7. Calculate the time you spend sitting down daily
As we become more technology-dependent, we are adopting more of a sedentary lifestyle. According to the US Women’s Health Study, women over 50 who sit for 11 hours a day reduce their life expectancy by 9 years! The consequences for a sedentary lifestyle can be very serious, including deep vein thrombosis, colon cancer, osteoporosis, kidney stones and a Spinal disc herniation (slipped disc). Improve your lifestyle by adding regular physical activity to your routine, at least 2.5 hours a week.

8. Look out for temperature changes in your body
Care for your blood vessels' health and circulation by observing the temperature changes in your body, especially in extreme temperature conditions. Excess heat from the sun, stress, and eating very spicy food may cause flushing in the face – particularly redness in the cheeks and nose. This means that the blood vessels are dilating and this may not be a healthy sign, especially if you are a woman between 30 and 55. Cold conditions can be just as dangerous to our body if we aren’t prepared for them – frequently experiencing cold feet or hands indicates lack of circulation, which could lead to Raynaud’s disease (suffering from excessively reduced blood flow). So, make sure to take the necessary precautions before this becomes a risk!

9. Inspect your nipples for signs of breast cancer
A well-known pointer that calls for a professional body check-up is having abnormalities in your nipples. Be on the look-out for inward-facing nipples as this could be a typical sign of breast cancer. If your nipples show any eczema, discharge or bloodstains, take action. Make sure to look out for these signs regularly when showering and find time to do regular exercise, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and drink less alcohol to reduce the risk of getting breast cancer.

10. Examine your nails to look out for fungal infections
It is rather easy for toenails to get an infection and one of the obvious symptoms of this event is when the nail becomes discolored, thickens, or becomes brittle, causing discomfort in your feet. Keep your feet safe from this by checking them regularly, keeping them clean and dry from excess sweat due to the heat, using shoes that are just right for your feet and not too old, not trimming or picking the skin around the toenails, and avoid walking barefoot in public places. If you do suffer from an infected toenail, seek medical assistance and use antifungal spray or powder to treat it.

This is only for your information, kindly take the advice of your doctor for medicines, exercises and so on.

Unusual Uses Of Vicks Vapo Rub

Any one who has a cold, runs to get a bottle of Vicks VapoRub. However, as we’re going to discover today, it does more than just clear your chest.

1. Insect repellent- To start this list, we thought we’d go with something out of the ordinary; did you know that Vicks VapoRub will repel insects? Thanks to the cedar leaf oil it contains, the product can be dabbed onto your clothes and even your ears, elbows, knees, and neck before heading outside on a sunny day. While the smell isn't too strong for us, the menthol will keep all bugs and critters away. If you enjoy camping trips, it can also be used for bug bites because it relieves itching.

2. Relief  from headache - Of all the pains we experience in life, the dull ache in the forehead has to be one of the most frustrating. Normally coming from nowhere to ruin our day, headaches can actually be alleviated by applying Vicka VapoRub under the nose. As you breathe in deeply, the menthol should get to work and clear any problems.

3. Tears for a shot ! Admittedly, this isn't going to be for everybody but professional actors/actresses actually use Vicks VapoRub if they need to cry for a photoshoot or stage performance; a little under the eyes will allow a tear or two.

4. Relief from bruises  - If you’ve noticed the early stages of a bruise, combine the Vicks VapoRub with some salt and the mixture should prevent an ugly purple wound from developing.

5. Save furniture from pets - If you own a cat and they like to scratch on things, some Vicks VapoRub will work wonders here because your cat won’t like the smell. Whether it’s a wall or a door, you can increase their life by deterring your feline friend..

6. Easy Aromatherapy Solution - If you want to transmit a beautiful scent into the air, make sure you have some Vicks added to your air freshener and it’ll soon circulate around the whole room. If you’re ill or experiencing chest congestion, this is a great way to turn the environment in your favor.
7.  Relief from Acne - At first, you might laugh a little and then click away but this is a serious suggestion. If you apply Vicks VapoRub to acne, it will soon dry and soothe the skin (only when applied numerous times in a day!).

8.Heals Wound  - Of course, we have the likes of Neosporin to deal with splinters and cuts but what if you run out? Well, this is where Vicks comes in because it should speed up the healing process while preventing access for bacteria and germs.

9. Soothes Earache - Along with a headache, an earache is another pain we could do without. Assuming your earache is caused by a common cold, you can ease pain with a Vicks VapoRub cotton ball. As you rub the cotton ball around in your ear a little, the Vicks should start easing the pain.

10. Rescue For Squeaky Door - Do you have a door that always squeaks when opening or closing? If so, Vicks VapoRub often works as an emergency replacement for oil.

11. Eczema Relief - After applying Vicks to the affected area, many people find relief and a reduction in inflammation.

12.  Cracked Heel Cure - Especially during the winter, dryness is common for both the hands and heels. Over time, the skin begins to crack and this causes pain and discomfort. With VapoRub, we have a product that will hydrate the skin and therefore prevent/fix cracking; make sure you cover with a bandage after applying.

13. Fungal Toenail Remedy - As well as not looking too nice, nail fungus will quickly infect the toes thus causing discoloration and thickening. With the latter, the nail is pushed further and further away from the toes until it falls away. In recent years, scientists have experimented with numerous solutions only to find VapoRub as the ideal one thanks to the thymol it contains.
Before applying, wash and dry your feet extensively. From here, try to get into every crack and corner (and even under the nail, if possible!). As long as you apply a band aid to keep the toe clean each time, you should see results in a minimum of ten days.

14.   Tennis Elbow Treatment - Since Vicks contains both menthol and camphor, it can be a very good treatment for tennis elbow. As long as you work with the doctor and possibly a therapist to deal with the underlying cause, the VapoRub works as a topical analgesic and this means the minor aches should be removed in the short-term.

15. Soothes Burn  - If you recently burned yourself from the steam of cooking vegetables, for example, the first step should always be to run it under cold water but then relief can be gained from Vicks.

16.  Moisturizer - Quick and simple, Vicks works as a moisturizer for your skin if you don’t have anything else in the house.

17. Removes Wart - After applying some Vicks VapoRub to the affected area, cover with a bandage or band aid and then place your sock over the top. If you can apply it once or twice a day for the next two weeks, the wart should disappear.

18.  Lip Plumper - Nowadays, many people apply VapoRub to the lips because it has so many benefits. With the menthol, it should make them feel softer while also making them look thicker. Of course, the petroleum jelly will keep them moisturized; this being said, it isn't a solution for dry lips because this can cause irritation.
19.  Covering Smells - On a day-to-day basis, there are many unpleasant smells that can occur from a baby’s diaper to removing the trash. While holding our breath works in the short-term, it doesn’t help with removing the smell in the long-term. With a combination of the Vicks air freshener we discussed previously and a little applied under the nose, you’ll be immune to all those nasty scents.

20. Soothes Aching Muscles - After working out, it isn't long before the trained muscles start to ache (the next day is always difficult after ‘leg day’!). To remove the aching somewhat, a layer of Vicks applied with a warm towel will relieve pain and improve recovery; this is something many sportspeople do after an event.
21. Race Horses To Focus   - Often, racehorses can get distracted by the smell of mares so a little Vicks under the nostrils of your horse will keep them focused for the run ahead.

22. Fades Stretch Mark - If you don’t feel confident when your stretch marks are on show, the regular application of Vicks VapoRub can help and you should see a difference within a couple of weeks.
23.Prevents Infection  - As we saw earlier, Vicks is useful when treating splinters and cuts but it applies to most wounds where infection is a likely problem.

24.  Shower Bomb - Just recently, there has been several commercials for the so-called ‘shower disks’ containing Vicks VapoRub and this is something else people seem to love. After placing the disk in the shower, the vapors should aid any sniffling or cold you’ve been experiencing; the steam combines with the Vicks to help your sinuses.

25.Preventions Pets From Peeing On Carpets - Finally, having an open bottle of this product near rugs and mats should deter your pets which means you won’t have to walk in to find a wet rug where they’ve decided to pee.

26.  Vicks Vaporub for Colds. Vicks VapoRub is an age-old mentholated topical cream intended to relieve head, throat, and chest stuffiness.

Stops cough immediately, by rubbing Vicks on your soles and putting a pair of socks at night, gives you relief from cough at night.

Quick relief from aching muscles, as by applying Vicks, it increases blood circulation, providing instant relief.
