5 herbs you should start consuming daily to fight pollution

Those living in Delhi and surrounding areas are living under the terrible burden of the toxic air enveloping their lungs as well as day-to-day life in general. The air quality index calls it hazardous, with some apps even calling it the worst we have ever seen - an ‘apocalypse’ of sorts. So what do we do, apart from panicking? Apart from limiting your exposure to the hazardous outdoor air and installing home air purifiers, there are some Ayurveda backed ways that you can prepare your body to fight air pollution hazards.

Amla / Indian gooseberry / nellikai
The Vitamin C present in Amla is a powerful anti-oxidant which helps build resistance against air pollutants. Not only does Vitamin C provide essential shields from hazardous environments, it also helps in regenerating the Vitamin E levels in our bloodstream. With the degrading air quality, it is important to be thoughtful towards building our immunity to be stable and strong, and Amla helps boost immunity naturally. Ripe, golden yellow Amlas are much more nutritious and rich in vitamins as compared to the normally used raw, green Amlas. Therefore, when choosing an Amla product, make sure you check this.

Tulsi and Giloy

The wondrous benefits of Tulsi are not unknown, however, Giloy is a relatively lesser known ingredient, effective nonetheless. This fortifying combination is an effective anti-allergen that helps look after the ailments arising due to the air pollution. Not only does Tulsi protect our respiratory tract but its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties help minimise the effect of air pollution on the environment as well.
A combination of these two herbs helps protect the internal organs and tissues against the chemical stress of industrial pollution. A shot of this juice twice a day is good for boosting immunity and overall well being.

Aloe vera and turmeric

Turmeric or Haldi has been used since the beginning of time as an all-round tonic for almost every health ailment, be it open wounds or common colds. It wins as a super-herb to combat all pollution related hazards. Turmeric helps ward off the toxic effects of inhaling polluted air and therefore, is a great choice if looking to cleanse your respiratory tract. Consuming a drink with a mixture of turmeric with another fortifying herb like Aloe Vera is the natural answer you must seek in this polluted environment.
A mixture of two potent herbs, a shot of this combination drink in the morning would help neutralize the harmful effects of the smog that is weighing you down.

Easy tips to save yourself from Delhi’s nasty pollution

Save your lungs this Diwali

With Diwali just around the corner, Delhi’s air quality is deteriorating with each passing day. The increase in the pollution levels has left people gasping for fresh air. The air quality levels are already so poor, which is naturally worrying how things will be post-Diwali celebration.

Exposure to such severe pollution can be harmful to health in many ways. It can aggravate and even cause problems like asthma, bronchitis, cardiovascular problems and COPD. You will be shocked to know that air pollution has been linked with severe problems like depression and cancer.

Thus, it is important for all of us to take special precautions in order to deal with the ghastly pollution. Here are some easy home remedies that can help beat the negative effects caused by the toxic air around us.

Use Gur / jaggery

Gur is packed with qualities that can help remove toxins from your system. It has natural detoxing properties that can help eliminate dust from bloodstream, lungs, food pipe as well as the respiratory tract.

Use Olive oil for cooking

Olive oil boosts immunity and thus helps in keeping you safe from the allergies and infections.

Have Ginger

Ginger root has magical properties. You can simply chew on fresh pieces or use some grated ginger in your daily curries or tea. This will help keep your immune system healthy. Gingerol and other compounds in ginger help in reducing the inflammation in the airways.

Include Garlic and Onion in your diet

Garlic and onions help in fighting infection by keeping your immune system in shape. Both onion and garlic are packed with antioxidants and have been used as ingredients in traditional medicines due to the benefits they offer. They also help in treating and preventing asthma.

Have more Vitamin C

Include lemons, oranges and other citrus foods in your everyday diet. The vitamin C content from these citrus fruits helps in reducing the effect of smog and helps in boosting immunity.

Have Tulsi / basil leaves

Tulsi (basil) has not one but many health benefits. Drink tulsi juice (10-15 ml) every day to keep your respiratory tract clear of pollutants.

Have Turmeric milk

Turmeric milk, commonly called haldi doodh is one of the best ways to keep your immunity in check and your body free of pollutants. You can have a warm glass of haldi milk before you go to bed every night.

Holy basil (Tulsi) for type 2 diabetes: prevent or control high blood sugar

Holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), commonly referred to as Tulsi in Hindi, is regarded as one of the most important plants in Ayurveda for its diverse medicinal properties. It is claimed that this everyday herb found in almost every Indian household can help manage high blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Perhaps, holy basil - from the leaves to the seed - is considered a tonic for the body as it may help boost your health in various forms. Low in calorie yet high in essential nutrients, the ancient herb may also aid in weight loss. Many people with diabetes include basil in their diet to help lower high blood glucose levels.

Holy basil for type 2 diabetes treatment: How it works

Some studies suggested that basil contains compounds that can help increase insulin secretion in people with type 2 diabetes. Research also found that holy basil may help lower fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels, although more work is needed to confirm whether or not the herb can be an effective treatment for diabetes.

Studies have also shown that the herb can be used to help reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. So, if you have prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, using holy basil may help prevent the symptoms of diabetes such as weight gain, insulin resistance, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc.

While using holy basil may provide some health benefits, the doctor warns that the herb should be consumed only as a food product or under the recommendation of your health care practitioner.
