Skipping breakfast might feel like a harmless morning shortcut, but your body has other plans. According to Apollo neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar, habitually missing the most important meal of the day can quietly impact your waistline, blood pressure, sugar levels, and cholesterol levels. A meta-analysis in Nutrients, involving over 118,000 people, found that those who regularly skipped breakfast had a higher likelihood of developing metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions including obesity, high blood pressure, raised blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol. The risk increase ranged from 10% to 30%, depending on the specific factor.

It’s important to note that the study only shows an association, not a direct cause-and-effect link. Researchers suggest that a balanced breakfast could offer some protection against long-term metabolic issues.

However, the risk mainly applies to people who skip breakfast in an unstructured way, often combined with poor sleep, low physical activity, or erratic eating patterns. Those practising planned intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating, with quality meals, may not face the same risks. A study published in the National Library of Medicine highlights research from the US and Japan showing that skipping breakfast is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as an increased risk of death from all causes.

For intermittent fasting followers using an 8-hour window, eating earlier in the day—say, 8 am to 4 pm—appears slightly better for metabolism. Early meals align with higher insulin sensitivity and circadian rhythm, allowing your body to process food more efficiently. According to Dr Sudhir Kumar, habitual breakfast skipping is linked to higher metabolic risk. He further pointed out that structured intermittent fasting isn’t automatically harmful, and when practising Intermittent Fasting (IF), it's best to prioritise an earlier eating window. Balanced meals, consistent sleep, and regular exercise remain essential.

Your diet can help fight against hospital-acquired infection

The popular opinion that low carb and high protein diets help in maintaining the waistline, also have the chance to alleviate hospital-acquired infections.

The study surrounding the hospital-acquired infection Clostridioides difficile was published in the journal mSystems.

In the study, scientists found that an interaction between antibiotic use and a high-fat/high-protein diet exacerbate C. diff infections in mice. Conversely, they found that a high-carbohydrate diet - which was correspondingly low in fat and protein - nearly eliminated symptoms.

C. diff, an intestinal infection designated as an urgent threat by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is often acquired when antibiotics have wiped out the "good" bacteria in the gut. Hundreds of thousands of people are diagnosed with C. diff infections each year and more than 10,000 die.

"Every day, we are learning more about the human microbiome and its importance in human health. The gut microbiome is strongly affected by diet, but the C. diff research community hasn't come to a consensus yet on the effects of diet on its risk or severity," said the lead microbiologist Brian Hedlund.

"Our study helps address this by testing several diets with very different macronutrient content. That is, the balance of dietary carbohydrate, protein, and fat were very different," added Hedlund.

Though studies suggest dietary protein exacerbates C. diff, there's little or no existing research exploring the interaction of a high-fat/high-protein diet with the infection.

Hedlund and the co-author of the study, Ernesto Abel-Santos, a UNLV biochemist, caution that the study was conducted using an animal model, and more work is underway to begin to establish a link between these diets and infections in people.

"Extreme diets are becoming very popular but we do not know the long-term effects on human health and specifically on the health of the human gut flora. We have to look at humans to see if it correlates," said Abel-Santos.

Recent studies suggest that because antibiotics kill bacterial species indiscriminately, the medications decimate populations of organisms that compete for amino acids, leaving C. diff free to propagate.

"It's clear that it's not just a numbers game," said Hedlund.

The new work suggests that diet may promote microbial groups that can be protective, even after antibiotics. For an infection to flourish, Hedlund said, "you might need this combination of wiping out C. diff competitors with antibiotics and then a diet that promotes overgrowth and disease."

"Lots of papers say that a lower microbial diversity is always a bad thing, but in this case, it had the best disease outcome," said Abel-Santos.

However, he cautions that a high-carb diet could lead to animals becoming asymptomatic carriers that can disseminate the infection to susceptible subjects.

1. You’ll get more and better sleep

Temperature regulation plays an incredibly important role in our sleep, as our temperatures naturally drop by bed time. Insulin sensitivity is a key marker measuring how well our body regulates blood sugar, and being more sensitive to insulin means you’re less at risk of suffering from metabolic syndrome and diabetes. An increase in brown fat, in turn, is also a beneficial marker, as brown fat is the kind of fat our body will use up, unlike white fat, that just accumulates in our body.

Sweet Tooth Gene Tied to Less Body Fat

A variant in the gene for a certain hormone is tied to people eating more carbs. Yet a new study of 451,000 people finds that the allele doesn’t universally mean poorer health. Researchers reported yesterday that those with the sweet-tooth variant actually have lower body fat than others, and no higher risk for type 2 diabetes. They did, however, find a link between the allele and high blood pressure and a thicker waistline.

“This goes against the current perception that eating sugar is bad for health. It may reduce body fat because the same allele also results in a lower consumption of protein and fat in the diet,” study coauthor, a molecular geneticist , says in a press release. “But whilst this version of the gene lowers body fat, it also redistributes fat to the upper body, where it’s more likely to cause harm, including higher blood pressure.”

The gene of interest here is FGF21, which encodes fibroblast growth factor 21, a hormone involved in alcohol and sugar consumption and insulin sensitization. The authors note that it’s a target of weight loss interventions.

People with a particular allele of FGF21—20 % of Europeans are homozygous for the varianttend to consume relatively more sugar and alcohol than those without the allele. To see what consequences this might have on people’s health,the team  collected data on 451,000 people whose genetic and health information is part of the UK Biobank.

Although those with the sweet-tooth allele had less body fat than others, they had a higher waist-to-hip ratio. They also had higher blood pressure, but no greater risk for heart disease or type 2 diabetes. “These results suggest that FGF21 has pleiotropic effects, with separate effects on macronutrient intake to those on body shape and blood pressure,” the authors write in their report.

A nutrition scientist tells that the results may warrant a rethink of the idea that “no matter what, sugar consumption is bad. This villainisation needs proper exploration.”

Expanding waistline linked to increased liver cancer risk

High body mass index (BMI), increased waist circumference and type 2 diabetes mellitus may increase the risk of liver cancer, a new study has found.

A team of researchers from the National Cancer Institute in the US and the American Cancer Society, studied whether obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with liver cancer risk.

Peter Campbell from the American Cancer Society and colleagues pooled data from 1.57 million adults enrolled in 14 different US-based prospective studies.

At enrolment, participants completed questionnaires related to their height, weight, alcohol intake, tobacco use and other factors potentially related to cancer risk. None of them had cancer at enrolment.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus was diagnosed in 6.5 per cent of the study participants. Over time, 2,162 developed liver cancer, which the researchers had verified.

They compared the rates of liver cancer among participants with and without obesity and diabetes to determine the relative risks of liver cancer.

Researchers found that for every five kg/m2 increase in BMI, there was a 38 and 25 per cent increase in the risk for liver cancer in men and women, respectively.

The increase in risk was eight per cent for every five cm increase in waist circumference.

When adjusted for alcohol intake, smoking, race and BMI, participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus were 2.61 times more likely to be diagnosed with liver cancer and the risk increased with increase in BMI.

“We found that each of these three factors was associated, robustly, with liver cancer risk. All three relate to metabolic dysfunction. This adds substantial support to liver cancer being on the list of obesity-associated cancers,” Campbell said.

The findings also add further evidence to support public health efforts aimed at curbing obesity, Campbell added.

“This is yet another reason to maintain a body weight in the ‘normal’ range for your height,” he said.

“Liver cancer is not simply related to excess alcohol intake and viral hepatitis infection,” he said.

“From a public health perspective, these results are very important because obesity and diabetes, unfortunately, are common conditions in the population,” said Katherine A McGlynn, from the National Cancer Institute.

“While some other well-described risk factors, such as hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus, are associated with increased risks of liver cancer, these factors are much less common than are obesity and diabetes,” McGlynn added.

The study was published in the journal Cancer Research.

 When it comes to heart health, new research adds to the argument that a pear-shaped body, which is heavy in the hips, may be better than an apple-shaped body, which carries more weight around the belly.
 
A study of diabetes patients found that increasing waist size appears to be a stronger predictor of serious heart disease than body weight or body mass index (BMI, the weight-to-height ratio).
"We have known that abdominal obesity is more linked to coronary atherosclerosis [plaque buildup in the arteries] than other forms of obesity," said Dr. Brent Muhlestein, a study author and co-director of research at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City.

"We found that left ventricle heart function got worse with progressive waist circumference. The relation between left ventricle function and waist circumference remained highly significant, even after adjusting for body weight," Muhlestein said.
The left ventricle is the heart's primary pumping chamber, and abnormal ventricular function is a common cause of heart disease, including congestive heart failure, the study authors noted.

Muhlestein added that reducing your waist size may reduce your risks.

For this investigation, scientists measured waist circumference, total body weight and BMI in 200 men and women with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can raise heart risks, but patients did not start the study with any symptoms of heart disease.

The researchers evaluated the heart function of study participants by using echocardiography -- a type of ultrasound. They noted that left ventricular function got progressively worse as waist sizes got bigger, with heart decline eventually leveling off at 45 inches of waistline.

The study authors noted that the link between waist circumference and reduced heart function was independent of total body weight and BMI.

Dr. Sarah Samaan, a cardiologist and physician partner at the Heart Hospital at Baylor in Plano, Texas, said these results support previous research indicating that fat in the abdominal area is much more risky than fat elsewhere in the body.

"Abdominal fat produces a wide range of inflammatory substances, and is more highly correlated with heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes than other types of fat," said Samaan, who was not involved with the study. "We know that heavier people are more likely to have stiffer hearts, which in turn can predispose to heart failure. This study shows us that fat in the abdominal area is especially harmful to heart function."

When compared to men, women in the study in general had better heart function at each increasing level of abdominal obesity. "In general, abdominal obesity had a greater adverse effect on men than women," Muhlestein said.

He said women are advised to maintain a waist size of about 34 inches or less, while men should try to keep their waist circumference at 40 inches or less.

Previous research from the same team of scientists at Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute and Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore showed that the greater your BMI, the greater your risk of heart disease.

Exercise and diet remain the mainstays of treatment for all obese persons, including those with an apple shape, said Muhlestein. "This study emphasizes, however, that those of us who have an apple shape should perhaps be even more motivated to reduce all of our cardiovascular risk factors, including our waist circumference," he said.

Samaan added that aerobic exercise is the best type of exercise to burn belly fat.

"While crunches may strengthen the abs, they won't necessarily burn abdominal fat," she said. "Also, smokers tend to hold more belly fat, even if their total body weight is normal, so quitting smoking may help."

The report was to be presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology, in Chicago. Until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, data and conclusions presented at meetings are usually considered preliminary.
