This morning mistake can silently hike your BP, weight, blood sugar and cholesterol, Apollo doctor warns SECTIONS This morning mistake can silently hike your BP, weight, blood sugar and cholesterol, Apollo doctor warns

Skipping breakfast might feel like a harmless morning shortcut, but your body has other plans. According to Apollo neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar, habitually missing the most important meal of the day can quietly impact your waistline, blood pressure, sugar levels, and cholesterol levels. But before you panic, there’s nuance: structured intermittent fasting isn’t the villain here. Timing, balance, and lifestyle play a starring role. Let’s unpack what the latest research really says and how your mornings could make --- or break--- your metabolic health.

A meta-analysis in Nutrients, involving over 118,000 people, found that those who regularly skipped breakfast had a higher likelihood of developing metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions including obesity, high blood pressure, raised blood sugar, and abnormal cholesterol. The risk increase ranged from 10% to 30%, depending on the specific factor.

It’s important to note that the study only shows an association, not a direct cause-and-effect link. Researchers suggest that a balanced breakfast could offer some protection against long-term metabolic issues.

However, the risk mainly applies to people who skip breakfast in an unstructured way, often combined with poor sleep, low physical activity, or erratic eating patterns. Those practising planned intermittent fasting or time-restricted eating, with quality meals, may not face the same risks. A study published in the National Library of Medicine highlights research from the US and Japan showing that skipping breakfast is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as an increased risk of death from all causes.

For intermittent fasting followers using an 8-hour window, eating earlier in the day—say, 8 am to 4 pm—appears slightly better for metabolism. Early meals align with higher insulin sensitivity and circadian rhythm, allowing your body to process food more efficiently. According to Dr Sudhir Kumar, habitual breakfast skipping is linked to higher metabolic risk. He further pointed out that structured intermittent fasting isn’t automatically harmful, and when practising Intermittent Fasting (IF), it's best to prioritise an earlier eating window. Balanced meals, consistent sleep, and regular exercise remain essential.

Exercise Timing-Key to successful weight loss

Exercise timing is key to successful weight loss, finds a new study. Consistency in the time of day that exercise is performed irrespective of intensity determines the success of weight loss programme.

In a study of 375 adults who have successfully maintained weight loss and who engage in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity, most reported consistency in the time of day that they exercised, with early morning being the most common time.

The role of exercise in any regimen of weight loss programme cannot be underestimated. Energy balance is a process through which the body attempts to establish homeostatis. Most individuals spend much of their lives in the same weight range without a daily focus on caloric intake and output. The two parts of the equation for weight maintenance are energy intake ( eating and drinking) versus energy output ( non-exercise thermogenesis+ exercise) in order to achieve weight loss. Researchers all recommend exercise as an integral part of any weight loss program. Physical activity and exercise are often used interchangeably. However, correctly defined, physical activity is all movement that creates energy expenditure, whereas exercise is planned, structured physical activity.

The study found that being consistent in the timing pf physical activity was associated with higher physical activity levels, regardless of whether people exercised consistently during the morning, afternoon or evening.

Our findings, warrant future experimental research to determine whether promoting consistency in the time of day that planned and structured physical activity is performed can help individuals achieve and sustain higher levels of physical activity, said the senior author of the study. It will also be important to determine whether there is a specific time of day that is more advantageous for individuals who have initial low physical activity levels to develop a physical activity habit, added another researcher.

Timing of cancer radiation therapy may minimise hair loss

Hair loss in humans from toxic cancer radiotherapy and chemotherapy might be minimised if these treatments are given late in the day, scientists, including an Indian-origin researcher, have found.

Researchers found that mouse hair has a circadian clock – a 24-hour cycle of growth followed by restorative repair.

In the study, mice lost 85 per cent of their hair if they received radiation therapy in the morning, compared to a 17 per cent loss when treatment occurred in the evening.

The researchers, from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California,Irvine (UCI),worked out the precise timing of the hair circadian clock, and also uncovered the biology behind the clockwork – the molecules that tells hair when to grow and when to repair damage.

They then tested the clock using radiotherapy.

“These findings are particularly exciting because they present a significant step towards developing new radiation therapy protocols that include minimising negative side effects on normal tissues, such as hair or bone marrow, while maintaining the desired effects on cancer cells,” said Maksim Plikus, assistant professor of developmental and cell biology at UCI and the study’s first author.
“We will now apply our findings to design novel circadian rhythm-based approaches to cancer therapy,” Plikus said.

The scientists could not say whether their findings will directly translate to human cancer therapy because they haven’t yet studied that possibility.

However, they said it is becoming increasingly clear that body organs and tissues have their own circadian clocks that, when understood, could be used to time drug therapy for maximum benefit.

“There are clocks everywhere in the body – clocks that have their own unique rhythm that,we found, have little to do with the central clock in our brains,” said the study’s co-lead  investigator, Satchidananda Panda,an associate professor in Salk’s Regulatory Biology Laboratory and an expert on circadian rhythm.

“This suggests that delivering a drug to an organ while it is largely inactive is not a good idea. You could do more damage to the organ than when it is awake, repairing and restoring itself,” said Panda.
“If you know when an organ is mending itself, you might be able to deliver more potent doses of a drug or therapy. That might offer a better outcome while minimising side effects,” Panda said.

Radiotherapy damages DNA in cells that divide rapidly, which is why it is used against growing cancer cells. That means that DNA damage to hair cells from radiotherapy delivered in the morning is not repaired until the evening, leading to hair loss.

Damage from radiotherapy at night, however,is minimised because hair cells, already in the process of repairing DNA,can quickly heal, the study found.
