Critical signs that indicate the onset of a liver disease

Liver disease is often a silent killer progressing with no noticeable symptoms. Recognizing early signs is crucial. Primarily among this which we commonly see here are jaundice. It is a common symptom seen in all patients with liver disease. It could be of a mild nature or it could be of a very severe nature. The patient commonly notices the change in the colour of the urine of a darker nature, yellowish and darker. Or someone on the family could also notice that there is yellowish discoloration of the eye or the sclera, the white part of the eye. This needs evaluation immediately and needs an expert assessment in terms of gastroenterologist or surgery in the patient because there are  multiple causes of jaundice that needs to be ruled out whether it is a viral infection or bacterial infection. It could be liver tumours, it could be chronic alcohol abuse. All this needs to be ruled out immediately. So the patient needs to visit an expert. Associated symptoms along with jaundice could also be fluid filling in the abdomen which is called medically ascitis.  This is because there’s abdominal walls are LAX and there’s a potential for a large amount of fluid to collect over there. This fluid is primarily produced because the liver is not s able to synthesize any proteins that is ingested in the diet. So the albumin, the quantity of albumin made in the body is low and because of that fluid which is supposed to be in the blood vessels leaks out into the abdominal cavity. There are other potential spaces to collect. Fluid is also in the chest, which is called fluid diffusion or just in the limbs where you primarily see edema in the hands and legs or the patients may just present with swelling. The treatment for ascitis or edema is usually medical in nature. It requires some amount of diuretics but if it’s causing distress to the patient, then fluid from the abdomen or chest can also be removed by tapping. Other symptoms may include vomiting of  blood or passing dark colored stools. This is because of the rupture of blood vessels in the esophagus or the food pipe.  This happens because of underlying portal hypertension. This needs immediate attention again to control the source of bleeding and this is f=done by using an endoscope or a colonoscope. Other symptoms that the patient may present could be confusion which is usually called encephalopathy. In medical terms this could either be a mild nature where the patient may just be confused or may be incoherent to or exaggerated nature where the patient may be deeply commandos and requiring intensity and support. This is because of a buildup of ammonia in the blood. Ammonia builds up because of undigested food or resistance of blood in the digestive system and the liver is not able to metabolize it so the blood ammonia starts rising. This again is of an urgent nature where the patient requires hospitalization to lower the levels of ammonia in the blood. Other associated symptoms with liver disease are is one specifically called sarcopenia. Sarcopenia is a loss of muscle mass in the body could have severe thinning of the limbs, upper limbs and the lower limbs. This is again because of protein loss of protein synthesis and the patient is not able to keep up his muscle mass in the body. kidney can also get affected in liver disease. This is called hepatorenal syndrome where the patient’s urine output drops or the creatinine stats rising. This is evidence of serious affection of the liver. other associated symptoms that the patient may primarily present are liver tumours. All patients having end stage liver disease or chronic liver disease for a long time are prone to develop liver tumours in the liver. This again requires assessment to control a downstage the tumours and then finally have a management plan for the liver tumours . Patients with liver disease can also present primarily with infections. Infections could be on the blood, in the chest and the abdomen. This needs treatment in terms of hospitalization and antibiotic treatment.

Stomach Cancer: How Can Your Mouthwash Help Spot The Early Symptoms?

stomach cancer: how can your mouthwash help spot the early symptoms?

Stomach or gastric cancer forms when cancer cells grow out of control in your stomach. It happens when abnormal cell growth meets your esophagus or the gastroesophageal junction. Doctors say more than 95 per cent of the time, stomach cancer starts in your stomach lining and progresses slowly.

According to experts, the symptoms of stomach cancer are not easy to detect initially and are usually known when it reaches the last stage. But a simple mouthwash test can detect the earliest signs of stomach cancer that strikes millions across the world. Researchers from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine say the oral rinse would pick up specific bacteria that are linked to gastric cancer before it gets even formed.

Researchers say analyzing mouth bacteria samples of people with or at risk of stomach cancer can help spot the pre-cancerous conditions as it works as a screening and prevention tool. The study included 98 patients scheduled for endoscopy, of which 30 were known to have stomach cancer. Researchers said a few of them had pre-cancerous gastric conditions and the remaining 38 were healthy.

Researchers analyzed mouth bacteria samples of people with or at risk of stomach cancer, identifying specific biomarkers tied to the disease to develop their cancer spotting mouthwash. The team then found distinct differences between the oral microbiomes of the healthy group compared to the cancerous and pre-cancerous patients.

Very few differences were observed between the samples from patients with cancer and those at risk of it. This suggested that the changes in the mouth microbiome may happen as soon as the stomach starts to undergo changes that can eventually turn into cancer.

The findings that were presented at the Digestive Disease Conference suggest that mouth bacteria alone could indicate whether someone is at risk of stomach cancer. Based on the biomarkers, the study authors identified a model of 13 bacterial strains that were present in the mouths of cancerous and pre-cancerous patients.

They now plan to conduct larger studies to test whether their findings can be applied to a wider population.

Signs and symptoms of stomachcancer

Experts say stomach cancer does not typically cause symptoms during the early stages. Even the most common early signs of stomach cancer, often unexplained weight loss and stomach pain do not usually show up until the cancer is more advanced.

Symptoms of stomach cancer include:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Heartburn and indigestion
  • Black stool
  • Vomiting blood
  • Feeling bloating and gassy
  • Stomach pain, often above your belly button
  • Feeling full even after eating a small meal or snack
Many of these symptoms are common in other conditions, too. See your provider to check if your symptoms are a sign of stomach cancer or another disease. You should speak to your healthcare provider if you have a strong family history of stomach cancer, if:
  • Many close family members were diagnosed with stomach cancer and other cancers, such as bowel or breast cancer
  • Close family members were diagnosed with stomach cancer at a young age, for example under the age of 40.

Alcohol-Related Liver Diseases Is A Silent Killer: 5 Tips To Help Your Liver Live Longer

The liver is the second largest organ in the human body and is responsible for breaking down the nutrients from food and using them for the rest of the body. Moreover, it performs the major functions of producing glucose, removing toxic waste materials from the body, and preventing infection. However, there has been a drastic rise in the cases of liver diseases in recent years among people of different age groups. In India, the mortality rate from liver diseases is steadily increasing, accounting for over one lakh deaths each year. One of the most common causes of liver disease is alcohol consumption, which acts as a silent killer and slowly affects liver function. TheHealthSite.com spoke to Dr Manish Kak, Consultant- Gastroenterology, Manipal Hospitals, Ghaziabad to understand more about liver diseases and fatty liver problems.

Alcohol And Liver Disease

Although the liver has a tremendous capacity to repair itself from toxic waste materials and break down most of the alcohol inside the body, a lot of harmful substances are generated inside the liver during this process that damage the liver cells. With time, the damaged cells weaken the liver's natural defence system, making it vulnerable to further damage. The harmful substances that pass through the intestines during this process enter the body through the blood and can even affect other major organs. The problem of fatty liver is a growing concern that is further triggered by alcohol consumption. It also causes hepatitis, which causes inflammation or swelling inside the liver and can become chronic in nature. Fatty liver disease and hepatitis B and C are the primary conditions caused by alcohol abuse in chronic cases that last for years. In some cases, this problem also escalates and causes liver cirrhosis, where the liver becomes hard and loses its functions.

With the change in lifestyle, many youngsters are inclined towards consuming alcohol, which has increased the risk of liver diseases. According to some studies, men are more inclined toward this deadly habit that silently affects the liver. In most cases, it is difficult to identify the symptoms in the initial stage and it is only diagnosed when the condition is advanced. The condition can be triggered by the sudden onset of jaundice and result in liver failure. The presence of symptoms such as:

  1. Jaundice
  2. Water retention in the stomach
  3. Loss of appetite
  4. Drowsiness
  5. Blood vomiting
  6. Weight loss, and
  7. Infections

All the above-mentioned symptoms indicate advanced liver disease. Even after quitting alcohol, the liver of chronic disease patients frequently does not recover.

Ways To Manage Liver Health

Our way of life and eating habits have a significant impact on fat formation in the liver. In the majority of cases, obesity and alcohol consumption are the root causes. As a result, it is important to make some changes. Check the list below:

  1. In order to maintain liver health, it is critical to incorporate healthier lifestyle choices.
  2. One must keep track of their BMI and include at least 30 minutes of physical activity in their daily routine.
  3. Obesity, in any form, can jeopardize not only the liver but also other vital organs.
  4. As alcoholic beverages have a direct impact on liver health, it is critical to limit or completely avoid alcohol consumption.
  5. One can also seek advice from a doctor on the appropriate amount based on their overall health.
