Benefits of Guava Leaves

Guava leaves are just as medicinally useful for many ways. The leaves are full of antioxidants, anti inflammatory agents, anti-bacterial, and even tannin that can have significant health benefits from treating stomach troubles to chronic diseases like cancer.

1. Diarrhea
According to a study published, guava-leaf extracts inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, a common cause of diarrhea. People suffering from diarrhea who drink guava leaf tea may experience less abdominal pain, fewer and less watery stools, and a quicker recovery, according to Drugs.com. Add the leaves and root of guava to a cup of boiling water, strain the water and consume it on an empty stomach for quick relief.
2. Lowers Cholesterol
LDL or Low-density lipoprotein are one of the five major groups of lipoproteins which transport all fat molecules throughout your body. It is the excess of this class of cholesterol that may cause a host of health disorders particularly that of heart. According to an article, study participants who drank guava leaf tea had lower cholesterol levels after eight weeks.

3. Manages Diabetes
Japan has approved guava leaves tea as one of the foods for specified health uses to help with the prevention and treatment of diabetes. The compounds in the tea help regulate blood sugar levels after meals, by inhibiting the absorption of two types of sugars - sucrose and maltose. According to an article published, guava leaf tea inhibits several different enzymes that convert carbohydrate in the digestive tract into glucose, potentially slowing its uptake into your blood.

4. Promotes Weight Loss
Looking to shed the extra inches around your belly? Sip into guava leaf tea. Guava leaves help prevent complex carbs from turning into sugars, promoting rapid weight loss. Drink guava leaves tea or juice regularly to reap the benefits.

5. Fights Cancer
Dr. says, "Guava leaves can lower the risk of cancer - especially breast, prostate, and oral cancers - due to high quantities of the antioxidant lycopene. Various studies have revealed that lycopene plays a significant role in lowering the risk of cancer.

6. Heals Cold and Cough
Guava leaves contain high levels of Vitamin C and iron, and a decoction of guava leaves is very helpful in relieving cough and cold as it helps get rid of mucus. It also disinfects the respiratory tract, throat and lungs.

7. Reduces Acne
Due to their high percentage of Vitamin C, guava leaves can help get rid of acne when crushed and applied to trouble spots
.

8. Improves Skin Texture
Guavas have high astringent properties, and guava leaves rank even higher. Apply a decoction of the leaves on your skin to help tone and tighten facial muscles.

9. Prevents Hair Loss
Suffering from hair loss? Guava leaves for hair can keep all your hair-related problems at bay. Guava leaves can be boiled and massaged onto the scalp. Guava is rich in antioxidants that could do wonders for volume of hair. Note: Make sure the water is cool before applying it to the scalp.

10. Beats Toothache
"Guava leaves are anti inflammatory in nature and help in maintaining good oral health", says  a nutritionist . Guava leaf tea works as a fantastic home remedy for toothache, swollen gums and oral ulcers due to the powerful antibacterial agents. You can also grind the leaves into a paste and apply it to your gums and teeth to cure these problems.

11. Improves Quality of Sleep
"Drinking guava leaf tea regularly helps improve quality of sleep", says a Dr.  It calms your nerves and quietens your mind, making it easier to slip into slumber.

12. Boosts Immunity
According to a nutritionist, "guava leaf tea helps boost the immune system", thereby reducing the risk of various illnesses.

13. Soothes Gastrointestinal Issues
Guava leaves are useful in treating gastrointestinal issues because they reduce the production of extra mucus that can irritate the digestive system, and prevent further microbial growth in the intestines due to anti-bacterial properties.

14. Promotes Heart Health
"Guava leaf tea may also benefit your heart and circulatory system", says a nutritionist.

15. Good for Your Brain
"Guava leaves contain vitamin B3 (niacin) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), which help in improving blood circulation to the brain, stimulating cognitive function and relaxing the nerves", remarks a Dr
.

Important First Aid Instructions

Accidents can happen at any time, though we all wish and hope that it doesn't happen to us. Whether, by chance we're victims of some accidents or we happen to witness someone suffering due to an accident, these little tips can be useful to save many lives.

Knowing first aid is always important and it is that crucial time when one can help an accident victim before the ambulance can arrive. Actions taken immediately after an accident have many a time saved lives or at least decreased the damage of the injury. The things you do right after the accident are extremely important.
And so, keep these advice close by, as it is so much better to have and not need, than to need  and not have...
Burns

First-degree burns can cause redness of the skin. 2nd degree burns may cause blisters, and 3rd-degree burns may cause blackened skin and damaged deep tissues.

What to IMMEDIATELY do: When it is a 1st or 2nd degree burn, put it under flowing cool water or put wet towels on the area.

Common house-hold treatments to reduce pain: A soaked tea bag will bring about immediate relief, owing to the healing qualities of Tannins, which are known to shrink tissues.

Soak a bag of tea in cold water, and then put on the skin. These are also a great solution for sunburns.

Uncooked potato: Take off the peel of an uncooked potato, cut it into slices and put on the burned area, so the liquid coming out of the potato will calm down the burn.

Vinegar: In case of a light burn, white vinegar or apple vinegar will do the work. Pour a little vinegar on a cloth towel and put on the burn for a while, the vinegar will disinfect the area and will stop the wound from becoming infected.

What NOT to do: Don't put ice on big burns. Ice may damage the skin or make the injury worse. You cannot use antibiotics or butter either.

When to seek medical aid: If these are 3rd degree burns or electrical or chemical burns.

Open Wounds

Open wounds in the skin need to be quickly treated to prevent infection.

What to IMMEDIATELY do: Place  a strip of gauze on the wound and apply direct pressure to stop the bleeding. If these are minor cuts and scrapes, wash with water and soap and smear a thin layer on Vaseline or antibiotic cream, and cover with a band-aid or bandage.
What NOT to do: Do not wash nor put a regular cream on a large, deep or very bloody injury. Instead go seek medic aid.

When to seek medical aid: If the wound is deep and becomes infected, accompanied by heat, redness, swelling or red stripes around, or if it has a foreign object in it (such as a nail) - go seek medical aid immediately.

A blow to the head

The skull provides our brain with very good protection, and so only rarely does it get hurt, but if it is a strong blow, the neck, back and soft tissues can get seriously damaged.

What to IMMEDIATELY do: If the person is unconscious, call an ambulance. If the area looks like it is bleeding, treat it like a cut but make sure to follow up with a doctor who will check for internal injuries. You can put a bag of ice on the area to decrease the swelling.

What NOT to do: Don't leave the injured person alone. Especially when they are asleep. Wake them every 3-4 hours and ask simple questions ('What time is it?' 'What day/date?' 'What is your name?') to make sure there is no brain injury or concussion.

When to seek medical aid: If the person harmed is convulsing, feeling dizzy or nauseous, vomits or displays obvious changes to behavior.

Suffocation

Suffocation is a rare occurrence and when it happens it can be deadly. When a person is chocking they cannot cough strongly enough to breath or talk, and his face will begin to get blue or red.

What to IMMEDIATELY do: Remove the obstruction if possible.

Ensure an open airway to allow the air to reach the lungs. Place the individual on his back. Support the nape of the neck on your palm and press the head backwards. Then press the angle of the jaw forward from behind. This will extend the head on the neck and lift the tongue clear off the airway. If the airway is opened by this method the individual gasps and starts to breathe. Give three to four inflations of the lungs to facilitate breathing by mouth-to-mouth method. If the heart is beating, carotid pulse can be felt at the base of neck. (Pulse at wrist may not be felt). Continue to ventilate the lungs until breathing becomes normal.

In order to prevent damage to the brain and other vital organs (which will occur due to the lack of oxygen) apply artificial respiration to ensure prompt ventilation of the lungs, and if necessary, do external cardiac compression.

Continue creating an "artificial respiration" until natural breathing is resumes. It may be necessary to continue for a while afterwards unless a doctor advises to stop.

What NOT to do: Do not drink water if there is a strong cough.

When to see Medical Aid: In cases of a serious suffocation.
Poisoning

Possible risks at home include cleaning materials, Carbon dioxide and pesticides. Even stings can be poisonous for some people.

What to IMMEDIATELY do: If a person is unconscious or is having trouble breathing, you must take them immediately to seek medical aid. Be prepared to give out the next details quickly: What is the substance involved, how much was taken, when, what is the weight and age of the person?

What NOT to do: Don't wait for the symptoms to start to call for help. Don't try to vomit and don't drink anything, unless a medical professional has told you so.

When to seek medical aid: Always and right away.

An object enters the eye
Anything that enters the eye, whether it is a grain of sand or a chemical mixture, can cause pain and may harm the cornea.

What to IMMEDIATELY do: Try to blink the foreign object away. If it doesn't come out, wash the eye by holding the lid open under a faucet.

What NOT to do: Do NOT rub your eyes. Even a small amount of dirt may scratch your cornea and cause infection and irreparable damage. Never try to dislodge a large object yourselves or an object buried deep in the eye. Leave that for professionals.

When to seek medical aid: If a chemical material like bleach enters, or it is a large object or one that is lodged deep in the eye - go to the emergency room immediately. If it is a small object but it causes swelling or disrupts your vision  - call a doctor.

Nose Bleeds

Nose bleeds occur when the gentle blood vessels inside the nose break. This could happen easily due to weather conditions, a strong blow or a chronic leaky nose.

What to IMMEDIATELY do: Sit on a chair and lean your body forward. Pinch your nose closed right below its bridge, where the bone meets cartilage. Maintain the pressure for 5-15 minutes. You can also use an ice pack to keep pressure.

Some suggest laying cold metal on the back of the neck or along the spine to narrow the blood vessels and stop the bleeding. For this method, any metal item will do, such as a tablespoon, a coin or a key. And so it is advisable to keep a metal item in the freezer for just this case.

What NOT to do: Do not tilt your head back, as you may swallow the blood, and it may enter your lungs.

When to seek medical aid: Contact a doctor if you aren't able to stop the bleeding after 20 minutes, or if there is no good reason for it, or if it is accompanied by headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears or visual impairments.
Sprain

Sprains may occur when the ligaments around the joints are over stretched. Bruising and swelling often accompany sprains.

What to IMMEDIATELY do: On the first day, put ice on the injured area and change it every 20 minutes. Bandage the injured area with an elastic bandage to keep the area from moving and don't move it for 24 hours. Afterwards apply heat to the area to get the blood flowing again.

What NOT to do: Do not try to 'work through the pain', it will only get worse and you may end up doing further damage.

When to seek medical aid: If the problem doesn't get better within a few days, go to a doctor.

Witch Hazel For Hemorrhoids, Bleeding, Skin Irritation

Applying an astringent or cream which contains witch hazel, may give you relief. It should be available with the chemists, but look for the label containing witch hazel in it. Rub onto affected area once a day to get relief.

Witch hazel contains chemicals called tannins. When applied directly to the skin, witch hazel might help reduce swelling, help repair broken skin, and fight bacteria.

Hemorrhoids. Applying witch hazel water to the skin may help to temporarily relieve itching, discomfort, irritation, and burning from hemorrhoids and other anal disorders.

Minor bleeding. Applying witch hazel bark, leaf, or water to the skin reduces minor bleeding.

Skin irritation. Applying witch hazel cream seems to relieve mild skin irritation, but not as well as hydrocortisone. Other research shows that applying a specific witch hazel ointment (Hametum) to the skin appears to improve symptoms of skin injury or irritated skin as effectively as a dexpanthenol ointment in children.

10 of the Worst Foods and Drinks For Tooth Stains

You might be fooled into thinking that your teeth will remain perfectly white if you schedule regular appointments with the dentist, and brush and floss them twice per day. The thing is that our favorite foods and drinks can actually leave a much more lasting impact on our teeth than you could ever imagine. Here are 10 of the worst foods and drinks that leave stains on your teeth:

1. Coffee
Coffee contains tannin that result in your teeth being discolored. Tannin is the same substance that’s used in tanning leather and making ink. What’s more is that coffee is highly acidic, and can alter the pH balance in your mouth significantly. This can lead to weakened tooth enamel, which is more vulnerable to staining once damaged.
2. Tea
Bad news for tea drinkers – tea can be just as bad as coffee when it comes to your teeth being stained, if not worse. Naturally-occurring tannins and processes such as oxidation can really take to teeth, potentially leaving them stained or splotchy.
3. Tomato Sauce
Although that huge serving of spaghetti and meatballs looks amazing on your plate, it might not look so good on your teeth. Tomato sauce contains a highly pigmented color and is also acidic. This leads to weakened tooth enamel, which in turn leads to teeth that are more susceptible to staining. Just so you know, eating tomato sauce occasionally is fine – just don’t do it every day.
4. Balsamic Vinegar
Balsamic vinegar is a condiment made from concentrated grape juice, and it’s also quite handy at staining teeth thanks to its sticky consistency and dark pigment content.
5. Beetroot
There’s no doubting that beetroots are healthy and delicious, but their deep color means that they can affect the whiteness of teeth significantly. Don’t snack on beetroots every day if you want to keep your teeth looking pearly white!
6. Berries
Healthy and delicious berries, when in eaten in significant quantities, can also contribute to dimming your smile. This is particularly true when referring to blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, and blackberries, regardless of whether they are eaten, drunk or processed as jelly or jam. If you must have your berries, don’t leave them sitting in your mouth afterward, and try consuming some hard cheese or milk afterward in order to neutralize their acidity.
7. Curries
If you’re a fan of curry, you won’t be too pleased to know that the classic Indian sauce can discolor your teeth. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables together with a curry dish in order to prevent it from sitting too long on your teeth.
8. Sports Drinks
A neon-hued sports drink goes down great after a strenuous gym session, but sports drinks can erode enamel and stain teeth. In addition, sports drinks can contain high amounts of sugar, which might not be the healthiest thing for you if you’re on a health drive.
9. Sodas
Everyone knows that sodas are bad for your teeth, but it turns out that soda is one of the worst things you can drink if you want a white smile. That’s because they contain phosphoric and carbonic acids, and each of these substances is great at eroding tooth enamel. The effect is only multiplied when they’re combined. Last but not least, their high sugar content creates a perfect breeding ground for tooth-munching bacteria.
10. Fruit Juices
The acidity in fruit juice makes your teeth more susceptible to staining, not to mention a whole lot of sugar. If you really must have your fruit juice, have a single serving, and keep in mind that water’s always a better bet for staying hydrated and preserving your smile.
