7 Foods to Prevent a Deadly Blood Clot

Blood clots that become lodged deep within the veins of our legs are called deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, and they can be deadly. Not only does the clot block blood flow to the affected area, it can sometimes break loose and travel to the heart or lungs where it has the potential to cause death.

Certain illnesses increase your risk for DVT, including cancer, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and inherited clotting disorders. But there is risk for anyone, even in absence of these conditions. That’s why it is so important to be aware of the role that diet plays in the formation of DVT. There is actually a lot that you can do to make a difference.

Luckily, DVT is treatable if you catch it early enough. But why take the risk when it is so easy to significantly lower your odds of developing a clot just by eating more delicious foods?
None of the 7 clot-prevention foods on our list should be challenging to add to your diet. In fact, we guarantee you’re going to love #7 – we saved the best for last!

1. Drink more water
One serious contributing factor to blood clots is dehydration. When you don’t have enough water in your blood, it thickens. This pushes your risk for a clot way up. Though experts have recently cast doubt on the standard recommendation for six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day, making sure you drink at least that much can give you peace of mind.
Another way to check if you’re getting enough water is to look at the color of your urine. It should be light yellow or nearly clear. If it is orange or brown in color, you are not getting enough water to lower your risk of DVT.

2. Eat a kiwi
A diet high in fruits and vegetables is important for health on so many levels, including the prevention of DVT. However, researchers from the University of Oslo in Norway suggest that kiwi fruit rises above the rest in terms of preventing dangerous clots. Their study found that people who ate 2-3 kiwi fruits each day had lower platelet activation, the mechanism by which blood clots, than people who ate none.
Lower platelet activation translates to a lower risk of blood clots, and kiwi was also found to lower cholesterol levels. But don’t worry if you don’t like kiwi. Other fruits that contain salicylates, which inhibit blood clotting, include oranges, strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, grapes, raisins, and prunes.

3. Add spices to your life
One of the easiest and most flavorful ways to lower your risk of DVT is to eat a lot of garlic. Beginning in the time of the ancient Egyptians, people have been using garlic as medicine. It has distinct blood-thinning capabilities along with its pungent flavor and odor.
But, it's not just garlic. Other herbs and spices high in salicylates include thyme, curry, turmeric, cayenne, paprika, licorice, peppermint, and ginger. Don’t fall into the trap of believing that a healthy diet has to be bland – add that spice.

4. Switch to virgin olive oil
Olive oil is much healthier than vegetable oils for overall cardiovascular health, including the risk of developing blood clots. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that it’s the phenols  in virgin olive oil that can lower the level of a few substances in blood that promote clots.
It’s super easy to use olive oil for cooking, but you can also infuse it with garlic and other clot-busting herbs to make an excellent dressing for salad and bread.

5. Enjoy nuts and whole grains
Both nuts and whole grains are rich in vitamin E, which is a natural blood thinner. Studies show that consuming more vitamin E can not only reduce your risk of developing a first clot, but also stop people who have already experienced DVT from developing further clots.

Great food choices include walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts.Whole grains like oats are also rich in vitamin E.

6. Focus on fish and flax
Foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids help to thin the blood and prevent both clots and strokes. Studies have shown that adding an additional 1.8 grams of omega-3 fatty acids to your diet each day can significantly improve blood flow and decrease the thickness of your arteries.
The best known source of omega-3 is fish, especially salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and anchovies. But there are also great plant sources available for people who don’t care for the taste of fish. Flaxseed and sunflower seeds are rich sources.

7. Sip red wine or grape juice

Here’s the good news. That glass of wine you have in the evenings can actually help prevent the development of blood clots. Red wine is especially good because it contains a high level of the flavonoids that prevent clots by controlling production of platelets. If you don’t drink alcohol, red grape juice is helpful, too.

And even if wine is not your thing, alcohol in general is a potent blood thinner. It appears to work by reducing platelet aggregation and fibrinogen levels (fibrinogen is a blood clotter), at the same time increasing fibrinolysis, which is the process that dissolves clots.

Caution- Limit transfats

We’ve talked a lot about the foods that should be added to your diet to reduce the risk of blood clots and dangerous DVT. They are all tasty foods that should not be too difficult to eat. But nothing is ever totally easy when it comes to health. You must also put some attention on reducing your intake of saturated and trans fats.

Saturated fat increases inflammation, and this makes it difficult for your blood to flow freely. Therefore, it is important to scale back on full-fat dairy products, fatty cuts of meat, and junk food snacks both salty and sweet. Packaged foods also hide a shocking amount of fat, so be sure to read labels in the store.

The good news is that once you bump up the flavor profile of your food with our recommended herbs and spices, drink more water, and enjoy plenty of fruits and nuts, you will feel more satisfied by your daily diet and crave the fatty stuff less. And finally, one of the biggest risks for DVT is a sedentary lifestyle, so make sure you are moving around enough each day, even if you can’t fit in a trip to the gym.

10 of the Worst Foods and Drinks For Tooth Stains

You might be fooled into thinking that your teeth will remain perfectly white if you schedule regular appointments with the dentist, and brush and floss them twice per day. The thing is that our favorite foods and drinks can actually leave a much more lasting impact on our teeth than you could ever imagine. Here are 10 of the worst foods and drinks that leave stains on your teeth:

1. Coffee
Coffee contains tannin that result in your teeth being discolored. Tannin is the same substance that’s used in tanning leather and making ink. What’s more is that coffee is highly acidic, and can alter the pH balance in your mouth significantly. This can lead to weakened tooth enamel, which is more vulnerable to staining once damaged.
2. Tea
Bad news for tea drinkers – tea can be just as bad as coffee when it comes to your teeth being stained, if not worse. Naturally-occurring tannins and processes such as oxidation can really take to teeth, potentially leaving them stained or splotchy.
3. Tomato Sauce
Although that huge serving of spaghetti and meatballs looks amazing on your plate, it might not look so good on your teeth. Tomato sauce contains a highly pigmented color and is also acidic. This leads to weakened tooth enamel, which in turn leads to teeth that are more susceptible to staining. Just so you know, eating tomato sauce occasionally is fine – just don’t do it every day.
4. Balsamic Vinegar
Balsamic vinegar is a condiment made from concentrated grape juice, and it’s also quite handy at staining teeth thanks to its sticky consistency and dark pigment content.
5. Beetroot
There’s no doubting that beetroots are healthy and delicious, but their deep color means that they can affect the whiteness of teeth significantly. Don’t snack on beetroots every day if you want to keep your teeth looking pearly white!
6. Berries
Healthy and delicious berries, when in eaten in significant quantities, can also contribute to dimming your smile. This is particularly true when referring to blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, and blackberries, regardless of whether they are eaten, drunk or processed as jelly or jam. If you must have your berries, don’t leave them sitting in your mouth afterward, and try consuming some hard cheese or milk afterward in order to neutralize their acidity.
7. Curries
If you’re a fan of curry, you won’t be too pleased to know that the classic Indian sauce can discolor your teeth. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables together with a curry dish in order to prevent it from sitting too long on your teeth.
8. Sports Drinks
A neon-hued sports drink goes down great after a strenuous gym session, but sports drinks can erode enamel and stain teeth. In addition, sports drinks can contain high amounts of sugar, which might not be the healthiest thing for you if you’re on a health drive.
9. Sodas
Everyone knows that sodas are bad for your teeth, but it turns out that soda is one of the worst things you can drink if you want a white smile. That’s because they contain phosphoric and carbonic acids, and each of these substances is great at eroding tooth enamel. The effect is only multiplied when they’re combined. Last but not least, their high sugar content creates a perfect breeding ground for tooth-munching bacteria.
10. Fruit Juices
The acidity in fruit juice makes your teeth more susceptible to staining, not to mention a whole lot of sugar. If you really must have your fruit juice, have a single serving, and keep in mind that water’s always a better bet for staying hydrated and preserving your smile.

1. Turmeric & Ginger Tea
Turmeric and ginger are both anti-inflammatory, and will help with osetoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Turmeric in particular has gotten a lot of attention lately. Its active ingredient is something called curcumin, which is a powerful antioxidant. In addition, it lowers the levels of 2 enzymes responsible for causing inflammation (which is what we’re often fighting with arthritis.) You can take these in a capsule form or make a nice spicy tea to enjoy daily.
You will need…
-2 cups of water
-1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
-1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
-Honey to taste

Directions
Bring 2 cups of water to a boil, and had ½ teaspoon each ground ginger and ground turmeric. Reduce to a simmer and let it be for 10-15 minutes. Strain, add honey to taste, and enjoy twice daily. This yields 2 servings.

2. Epsom salt soak
Epsom salt contains magnesium sulfate which sounds kind of scary, but it’s really quite a wonderful substance. A naturally occurring mineral, magnesium sulfate has been used to get relief from pain for years, namely because of its high levels of magnesium (more on magnesium below.)
You will need…
-1/2 cup of Epsom salt
-A large bowl
-Warm water

Directions
Fill a large bowl with warm water and add ½ cup of Epsom salt. Stir it around, and then submerge your sore joints in the liquid. If you are experiencing pain in a less convenient place to soak, such as your knees, try taking a bath with Epsom salts. Run a tub full of warm water and add 2 cups of Epsom salt. Soak for 15 minutes (at least.)

3. Get more magnesium
Magnesium is something our bodies need, but we can’t make it ourselves. It is used in over 300 different biomechanical responses in our body. It relaxes all our muscles and nerve endings, relieving stiffness and pain. It is even part of what makes our heart beat. Not only does it relax muscles and ease pain (this goes for arthritis pain too, of course) it helps bones to mineralize. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition conducted one of many studies on magnesium that showed people who had a diet high in magnesium/took supplements had higher bone density, and overall stronger bones. There are several ways to get more magnesium and utilize it for arthritis in particular.

Supplements: Magnesium capsules are a good thing to add to your day-to-day life, but they work best when used in conjunction with an improved diet.
Diet: Really this is the clincher-as great as supplements are, they can’t do everything. Eat foods that are high in magnesium, which include dark leafy greens (like spinach), nuts, and legumes (beans.)
Oil: There is magnesium oil that can be applied topically and absorbed through the skin. Try rubbing it on sore joints to relieve pain.
4. Dandelion Leaves
Incredibly high in vitamins A and C, dandelion leaves can help repair damaged tissue and help the liver clear toxins out of the blood. Studies, although limited, have also shown anti-inflammatory properties due to the linoleic and linoleic acid in them. Linoleic is an essential fatty acid required by the body to produce prostaglandin-which basically regulates immune responses and suppresses inflammation. Because of its involvement with immune responses, dandelion shows great potential when it comes to treating rheumatoid arthritis in particular. You can enjoy dandelion leaves in nice salad, or brew tea with them.
You will need…
-3 teaspoons of fresh dandelion leaves, or 1 teaspoon of dried
-1 cup of boiling water
-A handful of fresh leaves (if making a salad)
-A dash of extra virgin olive oil (if making a salad)

Directions
For fresh dandelion tea, step 3 teaspoons of fresh leaves or 1 teaspoon dried in 1 cup of boiling water. Strain and drink twice daily. Dandelion tea is very bitter…you have been warned! You can add honey to sweeten it up if you’d like. To make a salad, simply toss the greens in with another recipe, or eat them plain with a bit of extra virgin olive oil. Older leaves can be gently sautéed to soften them up a bit.
  5.Exercise
When it’s painful and difficult just to move, the last thing you feel like doing is getting up and exercising. As unpleasant as it may sound though, exercise is vital for those who suffer from any form of stiffness, joint pain, or arthritis. Exercise will help control weight (an excess of which puts more strain on your joints) strengthens the muscles that support the joint, even when the cartilage is thinning, and lubricates the joints, allowing them to move more freely. When we are inactive the synovial fluid in the joints is the consistency of a thick gel, but once we get moving and warming up, the liquid becomes more viscous and can do a better job of lubricating our joints and keeping them going smoothly. Just imagine if you were to be sedentary every day, pretty soon you’d be so stiff it’d be just about impossible to move. But if you get up and move around every day, you’ll get stronger and will loosen up as well.
Try…
-Going for a brisk walk-start with 15 minutes and work your way up into a solid daily routine.
-Doing joint-targeted exercises-certain stretches and exercises specifically target joints to help rid them of stiffness and pain.

6. Pectin & Grape Juice
Pectin is a water soluble carbohydrate substance found in the cell walls of plants, where it helps keep cell walls together, and gives fruit firmness as it ripens. It is extracted from fruit to use as a setting in jams and jellies, and has become popular as a home remedy for arthritis when combined with grape juice. It has been tentatively hypothesized that it helps return the synovial tissue to a more elastic and lubricated state, which results in pain-free movement. Despite the fact that more studies are needed on pectin and connective tissue many people have found, for whatever reason, great relief from their arthritis with it. The grape juice is the liquid of choice due to the fact that it can help with inflammation.
You will need…
-1 tablespoon of liquid pectin
-8 oz. of grape juice

Directions
Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid pectin with 8 oz. of grape juice and drink 1-2 times daily. It will take a week or two for the effects to show.
