Harvard Study Finds Rapidly Rising Methylmercury Levels in Fish

Fish is delicious and fast to cook, no wonder it’s a popular weekday meal all around the world. On top of that, there are numerous varieties of fish that can be used in countless ways, so the taste is never the same. Finally, fish has countless health benefits and is considered one of the healthiest sources of protein. Unfortunately, this last fact, at least regarding some fish, may soon change, as seafood and some species of fish that live in the sea have been found to contain rising levels of methylmercury, an extremely dangerous substance that forms when mercury is mixed with water-dwelling bacteria.
Methylmercury is a neurotoxin, meaning that it can impair the functioning and development of the nervous system. It has been estimated that over 80% of methylmercury exposure in the United States comes from fish consumption. With the levels of methylmercury in many fish species we eat rising rapidly, these fish may become unsafe to eat.

What Types of Fish Are Affected?

While all sea animals and corals have been observed to contain more methylmercury, the types of sea animals affected the most are large predators, such as sharks, swordfish, tuna, king mackerel, Alaskan cod, and several others. To understand why this is the case, we must understand where methylmercury comes from and how it gets into the fish we eat and, ultimately, our bodies.
The majority of methylmercury is created through water pollution. Water-filtering algae and corals absorb the toxic substance and ultimately get eaten by shrimp, squid, and smaller fish, which store the neurotoxin in their tissues. These types of sea creatures, in turn, are the primary food source for sea predators that are not only larger in size, but also live longer, accumulating even more methylmercury in their bodies.
This chain reaction yields an expected result: the sea life that is on the top of the food chain accumulate the most of the toxin. This process is called bioaccumulation, and unfortunately, humans are not immune to it either.

Overfishing and Warming Oceans Further Spike Up Methylmercury Levels in Fish

The world beneath the water surface is not as static as we might think. If it was, then we would have seen a decline in methylmercury in fish over the past 30 years, as mercury pollution decreased by 30% from 1990. Instead, scientists from  observing methylmercury levels in Atlantic fish since the 1970s until the 2000s found a rise in methylmercury levels in fish like cod, Atlantic bluefin tuna, and swordfish, and they suggest that overfishing and the warming of the oceans are to blame.
More specifically, the researchers found that the neurotoxin levels fluctuate in the fish depending on their diet. So, the levels of methylmercury rose in spiny dogfish populations by 33-61% when they were forced to feed on squid instead of their primary diet, cod, due to overfishing of the latter. Squid and shrimp, on average, have higher levels of the toxin in their flesh, which is why the dogfish that ate the squid, too, accumulated significantly more of the toxin.
However, this is only half of the puzzle, as the scientists also report that rising water temperatures require some fish, particularly the fast-swimming tuna, to eat more prey, which, in turn, can also increase the levels of methylmercury in its tissues, so much so that the study found a yearly 3.5% increase of the toxin in Atlantic bluefin tuna populations between 2012 and 2017, rendering the popular fish one of the least healthy choices available.
While the rising levels of the neurotoxin are certainly alarming, a lesson all of us can learn from this is that not all kinds of fish are toxic, and even the majority of those that are can be consumed in moderation. Fish is essential for a healthy diet, being an excellent source of protein, iron, vitamins, and healthy fats, and cutting it out of our diets will do more harm than good, so continue eating fish, but avoid some varieties (see chart above).
The only exception to that rule are pregnant women and children under the age of 2, as the methylmercury is particularly dangerous for brain development, so these populations should stick to the safest fish choices available. The chart above has been updated as of 2019 by the FDA and shows how often you can eat some of the most popular kinds of fish and which ones you should avoid.

International scientists have found autism's cause

Five clear, replicable, and related discoveries explaining how autism is triggered have formed an undeniably clear picture of autism’s causation, and possibly ways to alleviate the symptoms, too. Most of the research that has created this understanding has been published in the last 36 months, and largely from international scientists in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Israel, and China.

In early December 2017, the team published a paper that for the first time looked at the brain tissue of subjects with autism to determine the level of aluminum (note: they spell “aluminum” as “aluminium” in the United Kingdom) found within their brain tissue. For anyone trying to convince the world that “the science is settled and vaccines don’t cause autism,” the study’s findings are deeply contradictory to that statement. In a post written by the Professor on the day his study was published, he explained the groundbreaking results:
“…while the aluminium content of each of the 5 brains [of people with autism] was shockingly high it was the location of the aluminium in the brain tissue which served as the standout observation…The new evidence strongly suggests that aluminium is entering the brain in ASD [autism spectrum disorders] via pro-inflammatory cells which have become loaded up with aluminium in the blood and/or lymph, much as has been demonstrated for monocytes at injection sites for vaccines including aluminium adjuvants.”

Dr.’s quote includes a reference to “monocytes at injection sites” and the fact that the interaction between these monocytes and aluminum has been demonstrated in previous published science. I know, that sounds pretty technical, but bear with me. A “monocyte” is a type of white blood cell, of which one form of monocyte is a “macrophage.” A macrophage can be thought of as the garbage man of the immune system, eating up foreign substances, cell debris, etc. As you will see in a moment, macrophages appear to be playing a critical and devastating role in triggering autism, serving to escort aluminum injected from a vaccine directly into the brain, where it can disrupt brain development and trigger autism.

Dr.’s study — “Aluminium in brain tissue and autism” — is the final piece of a puzzle that first started to come together in 2004, and picked up steam since 2010, that has dramatically furthered the scientific understanding of exactly how a vaccine can trigger autism. This timeline is critical to recognize, because the Vaccine Court in the United States dismissed the vaccine-autism hypothesis in 2009, long before most of what I’m about to explain even existed. Science is a continuum, an emergence of truth through many different studies that often have to be pieced together before the picture becomes clear. And, scientific progress can sometimes move slowly until that moment when an emerging truth presents itself in such a way that it can no longer be denied. In my opinion, Dr.’s study provided the only data missing from an airtight explanation of what happened to my son and so many other children.

Why is aluminum in vaccines at all?
Aluminum is a critical component of most vaccines given to children. It serves as an “adjuvant” meaning the aluminum serves to “wake up” the immune system, provoking the immune system to recognize the “antigen” within the vaccine for whatever disease the vaccine serves to protect against. The amount of aluminum in vaccines given to children skyrocketed beginning in the early 1990s for two reasons: 1), more vaccines were added to the children’s vaccine schedule and, 2), the vaccination rate for all vaccines given to children rose (from 50–60% of children vaccinated in the mid-1980s to over 90% today). A child in the mid-1980s would have received 1,250 micrograms of aluminum from their vaccines by their 18-month birthday if they were fully vaccinated. Today, that number is 4,925 micrograms, a near-quadrupling of total aluminum.

Mystifyingly, aluminum has never experienced biological testing to consider its safety for being injected into babies, having been “grandfathered” into our modern safety standards. Canadian scientists addressed this omission in a critical study they published in 2011 titled, “Aluminum Vaccine Adjuvants: Are they Safe?” They wrote:
“Aluminum is an experimentally demonstrated neurotoxin and the most commonly used vaccine adjuvant. Despite almost 90 years of widespread use of aluminum adjuvants, medical science’s understanding about their mechanisms of action is still remarkably poor. There is also a concerning scarcity of data on toxicology and pharmacokinetics of these compounds. In spite of this, the notion that aluminum in vaccines is safe appears to be widely accepted. Experimental research, however, clearly shows that aluminum adjuvants have a potential to induce serious immunological disorders in humans. In particular, aluminum in adjuvant form carries a risk for autoimmunity, long-term brain inflammation and associated neurological complications and may thus have profound and widespread adverse health consequences.”

Protein can lead to drug treatments for chronic pain

Scientists have created a new bio-therapeutic molecule that could be used to treat neurological disorders such as chronic pain and epilepsy.

Scientists from 11 research institutes, created and characterised a new molecule that was able to alleviate hypersensitivity to inflammatory pain.

By separating elements of clostridium botulinum and clostridium tetani neurotoxins, commonly known as Botox and tetanus toxin respectively, the scientists were able to develop a model to re-join the molecule proteins yielding new biomedical properties, without unwanted toxic effects.

While the Botox element is able to block neuronal communication - and therefore pain signals - for months, the tetanus component targets the engineered toxin to the central nervous system, rather than stopping at exterior neurons that are the normal target of Botox.

The combination of the two effects is of great interest for neuroscience and can be applied to the treatment of several neurological disorders, particularly chronic pain conditions.
Botox and tetanus neurotoxins hold great promise for clinical applications, but since they are the most lethal proteins known to man, their paralytic activity was a stumbling block until now, researchers said.

"The toxins were split into parts so they were unable to function. Then later they were reassembled using a 'zipping' system so they can operate in a safe way," said  one of the lead authors of the study.

"The re-engineered chimera toxin has very similar characteristics to Botox and is still able to block neuro-transmission release, but the paralytic effect is a lot less. We then added a tetanus molecule which targets the chimera to where the pain signals travel towards the central nervous system," he said.

Preliminary data on animal models has now been collated  and future clinical trials are expected to fully characterise the new bio-therapeutic.

"Many painkillers relieve the pain temporarily and have various side effects. The selling point of this molecule is that the pain relief could last up to seven months, in a similar way that Botox injections for removing wrinkles last for several months," he said.

Drink coffee, defeat depression.

Here’s a disturbing stat: More than 10 percent of the  population is now on expensive antidepressant medications. But researchers  are wondering if a few cups of coffee couldn’t render those drugs unnecessary. In a study published last year, they found that women who drank an average of four cups of coffee per day were 20 percent less likely to develop depression than people who didn’t drink coffee, or any other caffeinated drinks, for that matter. Caffeine may protect the brain against certain neurotoxins that can cause depression, the authors wrote, or it could be nothing more than the energy lift you get from chronic, low-level exposures to the stimulant. Either way, drink up! And make sure your morning cuppa is certified organic.

Excessive consumption of cola or honey can cause unusual fainting

Drinking excessive amounts of cola and eating honey made from the pollen of Rhododendrons can cause unusual syncope (fainting) and symptoms of arrhythmia, a new study has found.

“Both these studies underline the importance of clinicians taking detailed medical histories for patients with unexplained arrhythmias and including questions about their dietary intakes,”a Dr. said.

It was reported how excessive consumption of cola drinks can result in marked potassium loss (hypokalemia), QT prolongation on ECGs and potentially life threatening arrhythmias.

The team described the case of a 31 year old woman admitted to hospital for traumatic syncope. Once other problems had been excluded (including a family history of sudden death, digestive symptoms, and metabolic or hormonal abnormalities), tests revealed the patient had blood potassium levels of 2.4 mmol/L, and a QTc (The QT interval on the ECG corrected for heart rate) of 610 ms.
Normal blood potassium levels range between 3.5 to 5.1 mmol/L; while the normal QTc for women is less than or equal to 450 ms.

In another case, it was reported of a 68 year old father and 27 year old son who were both admitted to the emergency department at the same time with symptoms of vomiting and dizziness.
Surface ECGs revealed both patients to have complete atrioventricular block and atrial flutter with slow ventricular responses.

When a history was taken both father and son reported that their breakfasts over the past three mornings had included high amounts of honey.

This information immediately made the Dr. to consider that their patients could be suffering from ‘mad honey poisoning’.

Mad honey poisoning occurs after people consume honey contaminated with grayanotoxin, a chemical contained in nectar from the Rhododendron species ponticum and luteum.

Grayanotoxin is a neurotoxin that binds to the sodium channels in the cell membrane, maintaining them in an open state and prolonging depolarisation.

Mad honey poisoning generally lasts no more than 24 hours, with symptoms of the mild form including dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, excessive perspiration, hypersalivation and paraesthesia.

Symptoms of the more severe form include syncope, seizures, complete atrioventricular block and even fatal tachyarrhythmias (due to oscillatory after potentials).
