7 Mistakes That Could Make Your Cold Worse Than It Already Is

Try as you might, it’s not always easy to dodge colds. The average American, after all, gets two to three colds a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most colds last only three to five days, but you can still be congested or have a cough for up to two weeks, says  an infectious disease specialist.

The trouble is, colds can linger longer or get worse as a result of lifestyle habits and behaviors, including those you might otherwise have thought were healthy. Below, experts dish on seven of these things that could be making you feel worse or prolonging your recovery from the common cold.

1: Not backing off your intensity at the gym.

Exercise can be a mental godsend when you’re sick, lifting your spirits at the very least. But don’t take this as permission to give it your all when you’re sick, or you could make yourself worse. If you have a runny nose or mild nasal congestion, you have permission to exercise with one caveat: “Keep the intensity mild to moderate,” Dr. Tan says. However, if you have a fever, cough, chest congestion, or stomach upset, hold off on all exercise until those symptoms resolve.

2: Telling yourself you’re not sick.

If you’ve always subscribed to the mind-over-matter philosophy when it comes to recovering from colds, give it up. Pretending you’re not sick might not encourage you to dial back your activities, which means you could overexert yourself, thus making symptoms worse and delaying recovery. Worse? “You’re exposing others to your illness if you to go to work or the gym when you’re sick,” the Dr. says. Your body really does know best, so listen to it and give it the rest it needs. And by all means, if you have a high fever, vomiting, upset stomach, or severe cough or nasal congestion with a significant runny nose, stay home.

3: Skimping on sleep.

Sleep might sink to the bottom of your regular to-do list—the CDC reports that one in three Americans don’t get the sleep they need—but when you’re sick, sleep becomes even more critical. “Inadequate sleep can reduce the function of the immune system and prolong recovery from colds,” says  a physician. The problem is, cold symptoms like coughing and congestion can keep you from logging adequate sleep, which is why she recommends using over-the-counter medications like antihistamines, Tylenol, ibuprofen, and decongestants to sleep better.

But do note: “Sleep may be more important for cold prevention than cure,” she adds. In one clinical study, individuals who slept under five hours a night were almost three times more likely to develop a cold than those who slept over seven hours per night.

4: Enjoying a few cocktails.

Forget the myth that alcohol kills all germs, therefore it’s OK to indulge. When you’re under the weather, avoid all alcohol. Why? “Alcohol directly suppresses your immune system and tends to be dehydrating, thus delivering a one-two punch to your immune system and prolonging your illness,” says  a physician. Alcohol can also interfere with your sleep, which, again, is a crucial part of recovery. Even if you sip your grandmother’s favorite cold remedy of whisky, lemon, and honey, you might feel better in the short run, but it’ll do nothing to shorten the course of your cold. Bottom line? Put the happy hours on hold until you’re 100 percent well.

5: Letting stress go unmanaged.

Chronic stress plus sickness is a recipe for disaster. “Chronic physical or psychological stress can prolong illness and recovery by the production of stress hormones, which may affect the immune system,” says the Dr., adding that mild stress doesn’t usually have as much of an impact. When you’re seriously stressed, you force your immune system to work harder, which makes it difficult for it to fight that cold. Try to rest as much a possible and engage in activities that calm you—for instance, meditating, playing with your pet, reading or watching movies—to quell that stress and give your body time to heal.

6: Overusing decongestants.

Decongestants can certainly help make you feel better, even help you sleep better, which might shorten the course of your cold, a Dr. says. However, using a nasal decongestant for longer than one or two days could spell trouble. “When used beyond three days, topical decongestant nasal sprays can cause rebound or worsening congestion,” a Dr. says.

7: Falling short on your fluid needs.

Hydration becomes even more important when you’re sick, and when it comes to choosing the right fluids to drink, the general rule of thumb is to sip on something thin and clear. Water, tea, and broth-based soups all work wonders and have science to back them. “Studies confirm that they shorten the duration and severity of the infection,” the Dr. says. They help thin out secretions your body naturally makes during a cold, and when those secretions and mucus are thinner, they’re easier to clear, which will make you feel better. On the flip side, liquids that aren’t clear (like dairy-based fluids) will tend to result in thicker secretions, so avoid those. Want to make this strategy go further? Dr.  also suggests warming up any liquids before sipping: The steam and heat will help clear mucus, resulting in more open nasal passages.

6 Common Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

We’ve all experienced dry eyes in some form. Dry eyes cause a telltale burning discomfort, redness, itchiness, and tear-inducing feeling associated with staring at a computer for too long, or maybe from seasonal allergies. Either way, chronic dry eyes, or what’s known as dry eye syndrome affects a shocking 5 million Americans when eyes lack adequate lubrication (tears) and moisture on the eye’s surface.
Tear production is the natural eye lubrication that aids clear vision, banishes debris from the surface of the eye, and safeguards the eyes from infection and other health issues (i.e., conjunctivitis). Lack of natural eye lubrication and insufficient tear production is caused by several underlying health issues, including:
  1. Environment
Several external or environmental factors can contribute to dry eyes, particularly if you’re prone to seasonal allergies due to tree and plant pollens. Other factors that can trigger the dry, itchy, red, and watery symptoms of dry eyes include overexposure to dry weather, high wind, dry air, and smoke.
  2. Eyelid deformities
The structure of the eyelids play a large role in tear production. If eyelids are deformed so that they improperly close, the eyes can be prone to dehydration due to lack of tears, as well as prone to debris and infection.
  3. Medications
Dry eyes can often be an uncomfortable side effect of taking medications. For instance, decongestants, antihistamines, blood pressure medications, and even some antidepressants can impair healthy tear production and dehydrate the eyes.
  4. Lifestyle elements
Those of us who sit staring at a computer screen for multiple hours of the day, know what it’s like to experience dry eyes from lack of blinking (and eye lubrication). Same goes for those who travel in airplanes regularly, as the interior of most planes is often dry and lacking oxygen.
  5. Aging
Eye lubrication naturally declines with age, which means many individuals develop dry eyes after the age of 50. Women also tend to develop dry eyes after menopause.
  6. Health conditions
Several health conditions (or medications used to treat them) contribute to dry eyes. For instance, patients with lupus, thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren’s syndrome, and like diabetes also suffer with eye dryness.

TV watching most strongly linked to obesity in kids

Among the lifestyle habits that influence the risk of overweight and obesity in children, watching television is the worst, suggests new research. “Identifying habits linked to overweight and obesity in the early stages of life can help us to define preventive strategies against other conditions, such as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases during adulthood,” said lead author of the study.

The researchers analysed five lifestyle habits: physical activity, sleep time, television time, plant-based food consumption and ultra-processed food consumption. Children who were less active and spent more time in front of the television at four years of age were at greater risk of being affected by overweight, obesity and metabolic syndrome at seven years of age, showed the findings.

The researchers also measured the time spent by the children on other sedentary activities, such as reading, drawing and doing puzzles. However, these activities did not appear to be associated with overweight or obesity. “When children watch television, they see a huge number of advertisements for unhealthy food,” said co-leader of the study. “This may encourage them to consume these products,” he said.

Ultra-processed foods, such as pastries, sweet beverages and refined-grain products, are high in sugar, salt and saturated fat and low in nutritional value. The study showed that high intake of these products at four years of age was associated with a higher BMI at seven years of age. Moreover, television viewing “discourages physical activity and interrupts sleep time”, explained Silvia Fernandez, a post-doctoral researcher at Barcelona Institute for Global Health. As the researchers noted, adequate sleep time in early childhood is essential for weight control later in childhood. The study concluded that adult health depends on the establishment of healthy lifestyle habits during childhood.

Why exercising may cause your weight to increase

You are doing strenuous work out at the gym and following a nutritious diet. After breaking sweat the gym every day and finally stand on that weighing scale, you realise that you have not lost any weight, but gained some in contrary.

If you think this is odd, it isn’t- it’s more common than you think. There are lot of factors that come into play when it comes to losing weight. Your lifestyle habits are an important factor and they could be causing you to lose, or gain work.

Here are some reasons most people don’t lose weight from exercising, listed by Prevention:

Paying too much attention to the numbers
There are several reasons why you shouldn’t give the weighing scale much weightage. Various factors like your daily water consumption, amount of sleep you get, stress levels can cause the numbers on the scales to teeter.

Rather than seeing the weight you lost, see the benefits you have gained from your new found hobby. Do you feel more fresh and energetic? Do your clothes fit you better than before? Are you feeling happier and less stressed? "It’s ultimately about how you’re feeling," said a clinical supervisor.

You consume more calories than you burn
When you turn your fitness up full blast, it is common for your appetite to greatly increase as well. In fact, for some people tend to gain more weight due to increased appetite. “When you start working out, your body starts burning more calories,” he explained. “And when you burn more calories, your body naturally wants to compensate by eating more calories to make up for what you’re burning.”

This happens because people overestimate the amount of calories they burn in the gym. "Make the goal getting healthy or fit or increasing athletic ability—not doing it just so you can eat more," she said.

You might have a health issue
Exercising, eating right and maintaining a good lifestyle isn’t enough if you have an ongoing health issue. Thyroid problems and certain medications can cause you to gain weight no matter how much you sweat it out at the gym.

Get to the root of these problems so you can make optimum use of your newfound healthy lifestyle. Consult a doctor as well, to rule out any serious health problems.

 You don’t drink enough water
“I think people forget how much more fluid they need for exercising—you need to make sure you’re keeping up with your liquid needs,” she said. After work out, we often mistake thirst for hunger and thus end up eating food rather than hydrating our body.

You are not lifting weights
Cardio exercise spikes metabolism and hunger levels and by doing weight training can counter it. “Plus, when you gain muscle from lifting, you actually burn more calories at rest,” she said. “Lifting weights tends to not boost appetite as much as cardio, and it increases resting metabolic rate by accumulating lean muscle mass.”

Women need to STOP having diet soda

Love having diet sodas? YOU NEED TO STOP!

Let’s face it. We all know that sodas and fizzy drinks aren’t really healthy and don’t do any good for us. But you can’t ignore how good they taste! And, if you are thinking that diet sodas and drinks are the safer buys and something which you can continue having on your diet, think again. Diet sodas are just as dangerous and toxic as the regular fizzy colas and drinks. This risk can be quite costly for women, as per a new study. It can put you at the risk of catching a stroke and related heart diseases if you do not.

What makes diet soda so popular?

A lot of people give in to the diet soda option just because it is advertised that it contains zero calories and is a good option for those on the mission to lose weight too. But, that is not the actual case. While it does away with the sugar content (which runs approximately 400 calories in a regular soda can), it replaces that with artificial sugar like aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose. In the long run, they can confuse your taste buds and stop you from actually recognising the sugar content in naturally sweet substances and fruits. They also trigger insulin resistance and put you at the risk of possible weight gain. And not to forget, there is no nutritional value to it so drinking this is worse than a glass of water.

The findings

According to a study published recently, women over the age of 50 were more likely to fall prey to the perils of heart diseases and stroke if they had more than one drink a day. It also pointed to the statistics of early death for women. So, it is best that you stay away from them and do some damage control.

Before you drink that can of diet soda, remember this:

When you drink that harmless soda or fizzy drink, what you are really doing is taking in empty calories. To burn that, you will have to do at least 15 minutes of any high-intensity workout for every can of cola you drink.

Make a better lifestyle habit

The study was conducted on over 82,000 women who reported menopausal symptoms. Of the women who reported having more than 2 fizzy or carbonated drinks a week, they showed more signs of coronary diseases and cardiac arrests. It was also highlighted that the risks multiplied for those who made informed choices, drinking diet sodas and maintained a considerably bad lifestyle which contributed to worsened health conditions.

There are other possible health risks too

Another study conducted in 2015 also observed that diet soda drinkers are three times more likely to suffer from bad mental health and develop dementia than those who consumed it less frequently.

What are the replacements?

So, what we are really suggesting is that you cut down on your consumption of sodas and diet sodas while you are at it. Look for other replacements with your meal and make a better choice. Having lemonade, fruit infused water, coffee or simply a bite of your favourite sugar fix can do the job well too.
