Four main factors that affect your sex drive; simple steps to boost your libido

Loss of libido ( sex life)is a common problem that can affect men and women of any age. It is normal for many people, especially women, to lose sex drive after a certain age. It normally happens with the women when they attain Perimenopausal age. A woman experiences mood swings, vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse during the perimenopausal phase.

The levels of the female hormone, estrogen, begin to fall in their blood which can affect libido and the loss of interest in sex. There are a number of reasons for loss of libido among females. A Gynecologist and IVF Specialist  said that "during pregnancy and lactation, it is not only the hormonal changes that can cause lack of libido. It is goaded by tiredness, low self-esteem due to weight gain and compounded by psychological factors too."

What causes the loss of libido

Physical issues: Decreasing testosterone is a normal part of ageing. However, a drastic drop in testosterone can lead to decreased libido.
Medications: Certain medications can sometimes reduce libido in men, like medication for high blood pressure may prevent ejaculation, or anti-androgenic drugs such as cimetidine, finasteride and cyproterone, which block the effects or reduce the production of testosterone.
Psychological issues - Certain mental issues, which include depression, stress, and problems in your relationship can affect your sex life. It's a serious illness where you may have feelings of extreme sadness that can last for a long time. These feelings are severe enough to interfere with your daily life, including your sex life.
Illness: Hormonal change, diabetes, injury in the back after delivery, chronic illness like cancer, etc. can reduce the sperm production count. All these factors are responsible for the loss of libido in women and men.

"Unfortunately, there is no simple pill that women or men can just have, forget about their problems and get to their normal sex life. The treatment, therefore, depends on identifying the problem and treating it first. If the patient suffers any medical disorder such as diabetes or blood pressure it should be treated first. If the cause is medication, it would need to be changed," said the Gynecologist and IVF Specialist.

You can also take steps to boost your libido on your own. The following have the potential to increase your libido:
  • Live a healthier lifestyle
  • Get enough sleep
  • Practice stress management
  • Reduce alcohol intake
  • Go for Testosterone replacement therapy (after consulting your doctor)
  • Counseling

Some superfoods every superwoman needs

A woman’s nutritional needs are quite different from that of a man. These requirements change with age as she goes through menstruation, pregnancy, lactation, and menopause.

Naturally, a woman’s body is more prone to wear and tear, with every stage of life requiring a focus on their diet. Women, in their round-the-clock routine, balancing the dual responsibility of a career and family, often forget to take care of themselves.

Here are some superfoods, that are packed with extra nutrients, which can ensure that a woman gets that extra boost of energy and nutrition that is essential for her well-being.

#1 Quinoa
Anciently believed to be ‘the mother of all grains’, this superfood has risen to global fame in the last few years. It is gluten-free and a complete protein. Quinoa contains twice as much fiber as other grains (almost 17 to 27g per 100g), and helps cut down the risk of hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. It is rich in copper, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus and is a good source of manganese, an antioxidant, which helps manage PMS. Quinoa is an excellent source of lysine that helps restore tissue damage. It primarily contains two flavonoids, quercetin and kaempferol, which are known to have good anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous, and anti-viral effects.

#2 Chia Seeds
Originally from Mexico, chia seeds have come to be highly regarded and valued for their nutritional and medicinal benefits. Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber and omega-3s making them highly beneficial for the heart and the digestive system. They are rich in alpha lipoic acid or ALA, an omega-3 fatty acid, which is highly effective in preventing breast and cervical cancer. High in antioxidants, they are also good for the skin and prevent premature ageing. They are rich in calcium, magnesium, and potassium thereby helping build healthy muscles and strong bones. Regular consumption of chia seeds helps reverse oxidative stress by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. These seeds have a wide spectrum of nutrients packed into them making them an ideal diet inclusion for expectant and lactating mothers.

#3 Amaranth
Also known as ramdana in hindi, ‘amaranthus’ in Greek means non-wilting. Amaranth’s gluten-free status has earned it the reputation of being a life and health enhancer. It is rich in calcium, iron, and phosphorus and is remarkably high in protein offering roughly 28g per 100g. Packed with double the amount of calcium as compared to milk, this superfood helps prevent osteoporosis. Amaranth is a complete protein. It also contains lysine, which helps strengthen hair follicles, and prevents premature graying and hair loss. It is also a good source of heart-friendly unsaturated fatty acids (upto 77%). High in dietary fiber, amaranth helps ease constipation, cramping of stomach muscles, gastric and peptic ulcers, and aids smooth digestion. It is also a good source of vitamin C and has a functional role in the production of collagen, which keeps skin healthy and young.

#4 Buckwheat
A seed that is both high in protein and fiber, buckwheat is also called groats. It is power-packed with many nutrients and antioxidants including tannins, rutin, and catechins. What makes buckwheat unique is its amino acid composition that helps in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure and assists in digestion. Buckwheat also has a good amount of heart-healthy fats. Buckwheat is composed of complex carbohydrates that have a low glycemic index, and aids in balancing blood sugar levels. It is also a good source of B-vitamins, zinc and folate, all of which are essential for a healthy circulatory system. Besides, these minerals also help fight depression, headache and anxiety.

#5 Black rice
Also known as ‘forbidden rice’, it was consumed thousands of years ago by Chinese royalty. Black rice may not be as well known as brown, red, or wild rice, but it has a rich profile of nutrients. It is the best form of rice when it comes to protein, antioxidants, fiber, and phytonutrients. Black rice also contains high amount of iron and copper and is one of the best-known sources of anthocyanin, which is a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radical damage and inflammation. Although black rice contains high levels of arsenic, employing proper cooking methods can bring down arsenic levels to safe limits. Apart from this, black rice also helps in keeping the heart healthy and aids in maintenance of cholesterol levels. It brings down oxidative stress and helps detoxify the body.

Health Benefits of Fenugreek Seeds ( Methi)

Greek hay, or fenugreek contains proteins, fiber, vitamin C, niacin, potassium, iron alkaloids and even a compound called diosgenin, which has estrogen-like properties.

1. Balances cholesterol levels

According to recent studies, fenugreek helps reduce LDL cholesterol. In one study, people who consumed 56 grams of fenugreek every day for 24 weeks reduced their cholesterol levels by 14 percent. You can crush and sprinkle some of its seeds on the food you prepare every day, helping yourself balance your cholesterol levels.

2. Reduces the risk of heart disease

Since it contains a high amount of galactomannan and is an excellent source of potassium, fenugreek helps maintain normal blood pressure and heart rate. In addition, in the same study that examined the reduction in cholesterol, the researchers also observed a 25 percent reduction in heart disease risk after 24 weeks of consuming 56 g of fenugreek per day.

3. Helps diabetics maintain blood sugar levels

Fenugreek is very useful for diabetics because of the galactomannan, a natural fiber in fenugreek which slows down sugar absorptions. Additionally, fenugreek contains amino acids that contribute to insulin production.

4. Strengthens hair and prevents dandruff and shedding

If you suffer from shedding or dandruff, you can treat both these problems with one simple remedy. Simply soak the fenugreek seeds in coconut oil overnight, boil the solution and apply it to your hair. Leave it for about 3 hours, and repeat every day for a week.

5. Aids weight loss

If you are trying to lose weight, add fenugreek to your diet. If you chew a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds soaked in water each morning on an empty stomach, you can take advantage of its soluble fibers, which will expand in your stomach and suppress your appetite during the day.

6. Increases milk production in lactating women

Fenugreek is high on the list of foods that all lactating women should eat, and studies have shown a more than 500% increase in milk production just 24-72 hours after fenugreek consumption. This is due to a high concentration of diosgenin, a compound which has been shown to have estrogen-like properties.

7. Eases labor

Fenugreek is especially useful as a natural relieving drug during childbirth because it causes contractions in the uterus. It also helps to reduce labor pain, but it is important not to consume too much as this may endanger the fetus.

8. Eases period discomfort

Fenugreek contains compounds called diosgenin and isoflavone, which have estrogen-like properties, and help reduce stressful symptoms of the menstrual cycle such as cramps, hot flashes, and mood swings. In addition, women are more sensitive to iron deficiency during menstruation, pregnancy, and lactation, and fenugreek may help compensate for that.

9. Soothes skin infections and reduces scars

Studies have shown that fenugreek helps to treat various skin problems such as pustules, blisters, burns, eczema, and gout. You can prepare a solution that will address all these problems:
• Take a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds and grind them into powder.
• Mix the powder with warm water.
• Take a clean piece of cloth, dip it in a mixture and clean the skin with it.

10. Contributes to digestive processes and prevents heartburn

Fenugreek helps to cleanse the body of toxins, soothes the stomach during digestion and helps prevent constipation. There are also various components that help to calm inflammation of the digestive system by coating the walls of the stomach and intestines. It can also relieve heartburn if you drink it as a tea. To learn how to do this, just follow this recipe:
• Grind one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds for each cup of tea you want to make.
• Add the ground fenugreek to a tea strainer, with or without other tea, although it is recommended to combine them with others for taste.
• Place the tea strainer in a glass and add a cup of boiling water for each teaspoon of fenugreek you have ground. Steep and let it rest for about 15 minutes.
• Drink the tea hot (reheated) or cold, you can add sweeteners or milk for taste. You can also upgrade the tea with a little nutmeg, honey, and lemon.

Top 10 health benefits of ajwain/ carom seeds/bishop's weed

Ajwain health benefits
It is a common sight in India to see mothers and grandmothers handing out ajwain seeds to family members who have an upset stomach. Carom seeds or bishop’s weed  also known as ajwain is a common herb found in Indian households and  is well known for properties that make it one of the most used home remedies. But other than being a good digestive aid, it has a number of other health benefits. Here are some of them:
1. Beat indigestion and flatulence: Ajwain is packed with tahymol. In fact it’s the only plant in the world with the highest amount of thymol. This chemical is very effective in helping the stomach release gastric juices that speed up digestion. It is known to help in cases of indigestionflatulencenausea and relieve colicky pain in babies. Tip: Boil a teaspoon of the seeds in a cup of water till it is reduced to half, strain and drink this water for instant relief. Another good remedy for nausea is to take a teaspoonful of the seed and wrap it in a betel leaf. Place this at the back of the mouth and swallow the juice slowly till as long as the leaf is intact.
2.Improves digestion when your’re pregnant or lactating: Due to its great anti-inflammatory and curative properties, ajwain is great for pregnant and lactating mothers. It helps to improve digestion, ward off constipation due to pregnancy and strengthens the muscles that make up the floor of the uterus. After pregnancy ajwain is known to heal the woman’s body internally, reduce inflammation and helps maintain good circulation. In some cultures it is also believed to improve the production of milk in lactating mothersTip: It is important that mothers-to-be do not eat too much of this seed. The seed is known to increase the heat causing pitta levels in the body and can cause problems with the pregnancy.
3. Relieves cough and asthma: The thymol, present in ajwain makes it a great local anaesthetic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It is known to relieve congestion due to formation of phlegm even in severe cases.Tip: Crush a few seeds of ajwain, mix it with jaggery and eat the mixture like a toffee. Another quick method is to tie it in a soft cloth and heat the bundle over a warm tawa. Apply this warm bundle over the chest to relieve congestion immediately.
4. Helps ease rheumatic and arthritic pain: Due to its anti-inflammatory  and anaesthetic properties, ajwain is a good way to get rid of pain due to rheumatism and arthritis. Try soaking your aching joints in a basin of warm water with a few seeds of ajwain. Alternatively you could crush the seed and apply the paste on the affected area for instant relief.
5. Instant relief from earache: Due to its antiseptic properties ajwain mixed with garlic and sesame oil provides instant relief from earache due to boils. If a person is suffering from ear aches due to congestion, a good remedy is to heat ajwain with milk. Putting a few drops of either of the mixtures in the ear can help relieve pain and discomfort.
6. Helps improve your sex life: Did you know that ajwain is a great aphrodisiac? Mixing ajwain with the seeds of tamarind, honey, ghee and milk is a great way to increase vitality. Having the mixture every day helps improve vitality and libido.
7. Keeps the heart healthy: Due to the presence of niacin and thymol along with other vitamins, ajwain is very good in maintaining heart health. It has properties that improve nerve impulses and overall circulation within the heart. Tip: Have ajwain boiled in hot water on an empty stomach regularly to keep heart disease at bay.
8. Cures hiccups instantly: As mentioned earlier, ajwain has properties that help reduce inflammation and soothes irritated nerves. Because of this, it is a great remedy to stop hiccups instantly. Have a few raw ajwain seeds with a few sips of water and watch your hiccups vanish instantly.
9. Remedy for acidity: Since it helps improve digestion, ajwain also helps in relieving acidity. The thymol content helps release stomach acids which helps reduce the regurgitation of acids. Tip: Mix one teaspoon of  ajwain with one teaspoon of jeera (cumin) and boil them in a glass of water. The solution should have a golden colour. Drink this whenever there is an attack of acidity for instant relief.
10. Relieves pain due to migraines: Sniffing the fumes of ajwain or applying its paste on the head helps relieve the pain due to migraines. When the seed is burned or crushed into a poultice, it releases its essential oils high in thymol content, this gives it a pain relieving effect.
If any of your symptoms persist or you have a pre-existing condition , please consult your doctor . This is an educational article and not a substitute for proper medical care.
