The Surprising Reasons the Color of Your Eyes Can Change

No matter what eye color you have, we all wondered at one point or another, what it would be like to have a different eye color. It turns out that some people do experience a change in their eye color throughout life. Does it necessarily indicate a health risk? Not always, but of course it is important to be cautious. "The factors that can cause eyes to change colors — or appear to have different colors — include genes, diseases, and trauma," said ophthalmologist Omar Chaudhary, MD. However, it’s also possible for the rare phenomenon to occur for harmless reasons.

How does our eye color develop?

When you were born, you likely had blue eyes. Babies’ eyes display this color because their bodies and eyes contain low levels of melanin, the pigment that gives your eyes, skin, and hair their color. Once your body becomes exposed to light, it starts to produce more melanin, the shade of your hair, skin, and eyes usually darkens to an extent, depending on your genes.
The color of our eyes is usually the last to fully form. The eye color of the majority of the world’s population usually darkens to the point it becomes dark brown, regardless of how much or little light exposure they have and will stay the same for the rest of their lives (some peoples' eyes remain a certain shade of blue or green, depending on one's genes). In the rare occurrence the eyes change color significantly throughout adulthood, there are several common causes that are important to be aware of.

1. Mood Intense joy or rage can change the regularity of the heartbeat and release hormones that cause the pupils to expand or contract. When the pupil changes size, the pigments in the iris compress or spread apart, and change the shade of your eye color.
 

2. Iris Freckles
Iris freckles, medically called iris ephelis, are small brown spots that can appear on the surface of the iris. Occurring in about 60 percent of people, these flecks on the surface of the iris (the colored part of the eye) are due to increased amounts of the pigment melanin produced by cells called melanocytes. They do not affect your vision and do not develop into malignant melanoma; they might, however, lead to a change in eye color

3. Aging
Many seniors develop a state called arcus senilis. It is manifested in a hazy blue or white ring on the cornea from a build-up of natural fatty substances - lipids. It’s common with aging and is usually harmless. Most people develop some degree of arcus senilis as they age. 

4. Cataract
A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, behind the pupil, that makes it look milky or gray. This state usually develops when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up your eye's lens. Some inherited genetic disorders that cause other health problems can increase your risk of cataracts. In most cases, it isn’t a cause for great concern as it can be successfully removed with surgery.

5. Clothing
You might remember from your school days that complementary colors enhance one another. When reds and greens are placed together, the reds appear more vibrant while the greens appear lusher. This principle applies to eye color as well. If you wear certain colors of clothing, the pigments in your shirt, jacket, tie, or scarf could temporarily change the color of your eyes. Depending on the color you wear, your eyes may appear lighter or darker.

6. Heterochromia
Heterochromia refers to a condition where each iris has a different color. However, a few kinds of this condition exist. People with central heterochromia have a different color near the border of their pupils, while complete heterochromia means having eyes that are completely different colors. That is, one eye may be green and their other eye brown, blue, or another color.

Some people are born with some type of heterochromia, in which case it doesn’t affect their health. However, it is possible to develop heterochromia as an adult for various reasons: eye injury, eye surgery, glaucoma, or a tumor in the iris. Therefore, if you notice a drastic change in your eye color, it’s best to visit an ophthalmologist or optometrist to rule out any possible health risks.

This primrose plant compound could combat eye cancer

A compound extracted from the Christmas berry primrose plant could be effective in slowing down the spread of eye cancer, suggests a study.

Uveal melanoma (UM) is a cancer (melanoma) of the eye involving the iris, ciliary body, or choroid (collectively referred to as the uvea).

The compound, dubbed FR900359 or FR, effectively blocked the growth of the uveal melanoma cells and it can one day be developed as an effective drug to treat the disease, the researchers said. 


It works by blocking a particular type of G protein that sits on a cell's membrane, called Gq, said researchers.

The team grew three different types of UM cells that have the cancer-spurring mutations in the lab and then treated the cells with FR.

The findings, showed that FR appeared to help reset the cells back to their normal state, he said. Higher doses of FR killed the cells.

"I'm very optimistic. If the results are confirmed in animal models and eventually humans, it could offer a new way to treat metastatic uveal melanoma patients down the road," said a Professor.

UM is the most common eye cancer in adults which most often travels to the liver. The cancer forms in melanocytes, the cells that make pigment.

Surgery or radiation is the go-to treatment for patients with primary UM that has not spread to other parts of the body. 


But metastases occur in about half of cases. The cancer most often travels to the liver. Once the cancer has spread, patients often only have a year or so to live as no effective therapies yet exist.

However, FR very effectively blocked the growth of the uveal melanoma cells, the research showed.

Genes that dictate eye colour linked to cancer risk


Specific inherited genetic differences may be linked to increased risk for eye cancer that arises from pigment cells that determine eye colour, a new study has found for the first time.

Uveal melanoma is a cancer of the eye involving the iris, ciliary body, or choroid (collectively referred to as uvea). Tumours arise from the pigment cells that reside in the uvea.


Previous clinical data suggests uveal melanoma is more common in Caucasians and individuals with light eye colouration; however, the genetic mechanisms underlying this cancer's development were largely unknown.

The study provides first evidence of a strong association between genes linked to eye colour and development of uveal melanoma. 


 "This is a very important discovery that will guide future research efforts to explore the interactions of these pigmentary genes with other genetic and environmental risk factors in cancers not linked to Sun exposure, such as eye melanoma," said Mohamed Abdel-Rahman of Ohio State University.

"This could provide a paradigm shift in the field. Our study suggests that in eye melanoma the pigmentation difference may play a direct cancer-driving role, not related to sunlight protection," said Abdel-Rahman.

Unlike other solid tumours, there has been limited progress in understanding the contribution of genetic risk factors to the development of uveal melanoma, primarily due to the absence of comprehensive genetic data from patients as the large sample cohorts for this rare cancer type have not been available for research.

To overcome these limitations, researchers analysed samples from more than 270 patients with uveal melanoma. 


Since there is a known connection between eye melanoma and skin cancer, researchers sought to determine whether there were commonly shared genetic factors between both diseases, as the inherited genetic risk of skin melanoma has been more extensively explored in previous medical literature.

The team analysed 29 inherited genetic mutations previously linked with skin melanoma to determine if there was an associated risk of uveal melanoma.

This analysis showed that five genetic mutations were significantly associated with uveal melanoma risk.

The three most significant genetic associations occurred in a genetic region that determines eye colour.

"Genetic susceptibility to uveal melanoma has been traditionally thought to be restricted only to a small groups of patients with family history," said Tomas Kirchhoff, from the New York University School of Medicine.

"Now our strong data shows the presence of novel genetic risk factors associated with this disease in a general population of uveal melanoma patients," said Kirchhoff.

"This data is also important because it indicates - for the first time - that there is a shared genetic susceptibility to both skin and uveal melanoma mediated by genetic determination of eye colour," he said.

The study appears in the journal Scientific Reports.
