Regular aspirin use may reduce cancer risk

Regular usage of aspirin is likely to reduce the overall risk of cancer, a reduction that primarily reflects a lower risk of colorectal cancer and other tumours of the gastrointestinal tracts, finds a new study.

The results showed that people, who took either a standard or a low-dose aspirin tablet at least twice a week, had a 3 percent lower risk of cancer than those who didn't report regular aspirin use.

The recurrent use of aspirin reduced the risk of colorectal cancer by 19 percent and the risk of any gastrointestinal cancer by 15 percent. No reduction was seen in the risk of breast, prostate or lung cancer.
However, the use of aspirin may complement, but not replace the preventive benefits of colonoscopy and other methods of cancer screening, warned the researchers.

"Our findings imply that aspirin use is expected to prevent a significant number of colorectal cancers beyond those that would be prevented by screening and may have even greater benefit in settings in which the resources to devote to cancer screening are lacking," said one of the researchers Andrew Chan, associate professor at Harvard University in US.

A regular usage of aspirin could prevent around 30,000 gastrointestinal tract tumours in the US each year and could prevent an additional 7,500 colorectal tumours among US adults over 50 who have endoscopic screening and 9,800 among the 30 million who are not screened, the researchers estimated.

The research team analysed 32 years of data from almost 136,000 participants in the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.

The findings of the study, published Online First in JAMA Oncology, stressed that patients should be well informed about the potential side effects of regular aspirin treatment and continue their regular screening tests.

But, aspirin should not be viewed as a substitute for colonoscopy or other cancer screening tests, the researchers concluded.

Food That Can Affect Your Poop!

Going to the bathroom for pooping is something that most people all over the world take for granted. It is nothing to be thoughtful of unless constipation has loomed in. But according to experts, occasional constipation is not something that may create any health problems when you know about the foods that you should avoid to steer clear of the situation.

1) Dairy Products: Cheese or clarified butter may serve your taste buds but too much of them are bad for the digestive system. It has been proved that excessive intake of dairy products makes the gastro-intestinal track sluggish to such an extent that it causes indigestion and stool problems. This is because most dairy products have a complex structure which the stomach finds difficult in breaking down.

2) Highly Processed Food Items: While most people have become fans of processed foods like pasta, noodles, oats and even chocolates as they save a lot of time, they are not favourable to the digestive system. Highly processed ingredients are known to contribute to constipation and bloating which feels very uncomfortable and do not allow one to focus.

3) Heavy Painkillers and Allergy Medications: Drugs that contain high doses of opiates are likely to mess with one’s bowel movement. This is because the bowel is known as a receptor of opiate which means painkillers are likely to affect them. It has also been found that people who take painkillers on a regular basis have stool problems. Anti-allergy medicines generally contain high doses of antihistamines which aim to dry out the mucus and sinuses present in one’s body. This way they also dry out the poop making it hard to pass and contribute to constipation.

4) Unripe Bananas: The interesting fact is that while unripe bananas can trigger poop problems, ripe and yellow bananas can help in releasing it. This is because the green and unripe bananas are rich in starch content which makes it difficult for the stomach to digest.

5) Swallowing Chewing Gums: While it is not true that if someone accidentally swallows chewing gum, it would linger in the stomach for several years, too many chewing gums if swallowed over a short period, can cause blockage of the digestive tract leading to constipation problems. The situation turns even worse when chewing gums are swallowed with other indigestible substances like seeds.

6) Caffeine: Though caffeine is known as a bowel stimulator, it can lead to stool problems when someone has too much of caffeine in the form of chocolate, black tea, coffee and caffeinated water when the body is dehydrated. It leads to constipation, bloating and several other bowel-related issues.

The key to having a healthy bowel movement every morning is to keep oneself hydrated by drinking plenty of water and eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables with high fibre content. But if the problem persists for over 3 days, it is important to check with a general physician to determine whether there is an underlying health issue.

Tips for Managing Crohn's Disease-Related Arthritis

As those of us living with Crohn’s disease know, its symptoms aren’t contained to the gastrointestinal tract. In fact, arthritis is the most common sign of Crohn's disease outside the intestines, and it can be a tricky one to manage. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to help keep those creaky joints at bay.

Warm water bath
It is well known that a hot shower reduces pain and has a prolonged effect, especially if you soak in a warm tub.

These sneakers are made for walking...

Walking is one of the simplest exercise which most people can do. All it needs is a good pair of shoes which gives you solid support and cushioning. With such a pair of shoes walking will be pain free.

Avoid sugar

White, sparkling sugar are known to cause inflammation and should be avoided. We all crave for sweets some time, best to eat a whole fruit, as it will give you a feeling of satiety due to fibre and less calories too. If at all, you love sweets, use unrefined sugars, jaggery / molasses/ honey.

Yoga is better than jogging for arthritic patients

High-impact exercise like running can be tough when you are in an arthritis flare and could make matters worse. However, you definitely shouldn’t cut out exercise all together. It is critical to keep your joints loose and moving, especially during a flare. Stick to low-impact exercises like yoga or swimming. Do whatever you find it easy and makes you happy.

Meditation

It is seen that meditation can reduce mental distress for those living with rheumatoid arthritis. Managing stress is important, as stress is known to trigger inflammation. Meditation makes one relaxed and at peace and is known to reduce chronic pain.

Add Omega 3 in your diet

Studies have shown that adding onega-3 foods or supplements significantly reduces the need for pain medications.  Any anti-inflammatory supplement can be beneficial not only for arthritis but also for Crohn's disease too.

Don't miss sleep

Sleep is essential for overall health, poor sleep has negative impacts on joint pain. To get good sleep, keep off electronic gadgets at least 30 minutes before you hit the bed. It is good to meditate before going to bed to get some sound sleep and to relax your body and your mind.

Peppermint oil

Peppermint essential oil contains menthol, which has anti-inflammatory properties. When applied on the skin it feels cooling and soothing. You can safely apply peppermint oil mixed with coconut oil directly to aching joints to potentially help manage pain and reduce swelling.

Avoid NSAIDs

Some researchers say NSAIDs raise the risk for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) like Crohn’s. So instead of popping ibuprofen for your pain, consider using acetaminophen or another type of pain reliever as prescribed by your doctor to help manage pain and inflammation from arthritis.

Discuss the best treatment options for you with your doctor

It’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor about the symptoms you are experiencing. The good news is, many of the medications prescribed for Crohn’s disease also treat the arthritis symptoms that can present with IBD. Take time to ask your doctor if they have specific recommendations for your arthritis pain and inflammation management.

One can try alternative treatments too to get relief. What is most important with arthritis is to keep moving, as when you move, the joints get flexible due to synovial fluid which reduces friction between the articular cartilage of synovial joints during movement.

Pregnant women learn to relax: Stress can affect the mental health of your child

Stressing out too much during pregnancy can cause long-lasting changes in the microbiome of the foetus, leading to anxiety and learning difficulty in them later, warn researchers.

In a recent study, the team of researchers at The Ohio State University, found that when pregnant mice were exposed to stress, it appeared to change the makeup of the bacteria in both their guts and placentas, as well as in the intestinal tracts of their female offspring.

Markers of inflammation increased in the placenta, the foetal brain and the adult brain of the offspring while a supportive protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) decreased. And these microbial changes lasted into adulthood.

The mice were more anxious, they spent more time in dark, closed spaces and they had a harder time learning cognitive tasks even though they were never stressed after birth, the researchers said.
Further, the female offspring of the stressed mice showed a lower ability to learn and higher anxiety-like behaviour compared to the offspring of non-stressed mother mice.

“Microbes from a mother’s gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts are the first to colonise in a developing foetus and newborns,” said led researcher Tamar Gur, Assistant Professor at Ohio State.
“That makes the bacteria an interesting potential explanation of why and how stress before an animal or person is born could prompt mental illness that can last a lifetime,” Gur added.

The study was presented at Neuroscience 2016, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in San Diego, recently.
