6 + 1 Reasons to eat garlic every day

Will you be eating more garlic?

A lot of people love garlic. It’s not just a tasty addition to almost every meal, but it’s also great for your wellbeing! Continue reading and find out why eating garlic is so good for you.

1. Healthy teeth

Research has shown garlic may be a good alternative treatment in treating inflamed gums. Additionally, garlic by nature has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties. And that also goes for all the tiny organisms living in your mouth and possibly influencing your health.

2. Fitter feeling

Are you hard at work to improve your fitness? Try adding more garlic to your diet. Research has shown that a particular garlic oil will lighten the load on your heart during exercise.

Additionally, you might enjoy knowing that this was a known fact in ancient times as well. The ancient Greeks would prescribe garlic to the (original) Olympic athletes and people involved in heavy physical work. This would hard labour just a little lighter.

3. Anti-ageing properties

There seems to be decent proof that garlic can work against ‘oxidative stress’, and with that: the process of ageing in and of itself. Wait, what? Simply put: we grow to look older because our bodies convert food and oxygen into energy. However, sometimes our body will be a little too enthusiastic with this process, and destroy other cells in the process. In turn, our skin becomes saggier and our brains become slower. That’s the consequences of ‘oxidative stress’.

In these cases, garlic may be a useful addition to your diet. The smelly herb causes your body to increase the production of substances in the blood that go against the overly enthusiastic oxidation of cells in your body. These substances are commonly known as anti-oxidants. This way, garlic helps to slow down the physical signs of ageing!

4. Garlic makes you more attractive

This might be at odds with your instincts, but it’s true. Of course, we’re all familiar with the effect garlic has on the smell of your breath. But did you know your body odour is also impacted by the vegetable? Research from 2016 has shown the influence of garlic on your bodily smell is actually mostly positive. Participants in a smelling test described the scents of the people who had eaten garlic as ‘less intense’ and ‘more attractive’. This may be because of garlic’s anti-microbial properties. The bacteria that cause the nasty smell of sweat are decreased by the garlic in your body. Be aware: this works best when eating garlic a day before your date. Of course we won’t recommend eating garlic immediately beforehand.

5. Fresh garlic for your immune system

The fact that garlic can contribute to our health was known to our grandmothers and even their grandmothers (and their grandmothers on top of that). The plant has been known for centuries to have properties that work against bacteria, viruses and fungi. For the ultimate boost to your immune system, however you’ll have to eat your garlic raw. When cutting or crushing the garlic, it releases ‘allicin’. This substance has a lot of benefits for your health, but upon heating the garlic, you’ll lose the vast majority of the allicin.

6. Garlic against high blood pressure

At this point, we’re all familiar with the dangers of high blood pressure. We also continue to learn more about the role cholesterol plays here. That’s why nowadays, you’ll quite often hear about products that claim to lower your cholesterol. Garlic, too, is one of those products. Multiple studies have shown that a daily intake of garlic will have long-term effects in lowering your cholesterol. Of course, if you’re dealing with any cardiovascular disease or increased cholesterol levels, you should always get the advice of a medical specialist. Garlic may affect the outcome as a whole, but it’s not a cure-all!

7. Helps reduce cough and phlegm

Boil 300 ml milk with 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder, crush/ finely chop 2-3 pearls of garlic, keep it on low flame, stirring from time to time, till it reduces less than half. Then add little sugar, drink it hot, eat the garlic, don't worry, there won't be any garlic smell. Having it daily, helps me to get rid of my cough and phlegm, as I'm a COPD patient along with thyroid cancer !

Of course, I love adding it to most of my dishes, dal, upma, most gravies, as I finely chop and put and fry along with onion, hubby who normally doesn't like garlic, is not able to find out and enjoys the dish !

Five reasons why Indian toilets are better than western toilets

Reasons why Indian toilets are better than western toilets

It’s really a matter of preference when we talk about Indian or Western toilets. While most households are installing western toilets, there are many who still prefer the Indian style toilet.
It goes without saying that western toilets are comfortable but they have many disadvantages too. Here are five reasons why Indian style toilets are better than the western style toilets.

Indian toilets keeps you fitter

Squatting in Indian toilets makes you exercise every day, which is good for your overall health. While most of us know the importance of exercising, we still choose to ignore it. Sitting in Indian toilets makes you squat, sweat and move your hands.
It is said that the way you sit in Indian toilet increases your blood circulation and is a great exercise for your hands and legs.

Indian toilets can improve digestion
Squatting squeezes your stomach, which aids digestion by pressing, pressurizing and churning the food in your stomach. Sitting in western-style toilet does not put any pressure on our stomach and sometimes doesn’t even lead to good and satisfactory clearance of stool.

Indian toilets are eco-friendly
You use toilet paper in Western toilets, which also leads to wastage of paper. There is no paper wastage in case of Indian toilets. Western toilets require even more water as compared to Indian toilets.

Indian toilets are good for pregnant women
Using Indian toilets benefit pregnant women as they have to squat while using them. There is no pressure on the uterus while a pregnant woman sits on the Indian toilet. It is even said that using Indian toilet regularly makes pregnant women ready for a smooth and natural delivery.

It can prevent colon cancer and other diseases
Squatting helps in the complete evacuation of the stool from the colon in our body. This prevents the chances of constipation, appendicitis and other factors that can cause colon cancer.

Exercise helps boost heart failure patients’ memory

Heart patients who exercise regularly and have better fitness are likely to have less cognitive impairment, says a study. Fitter patients have better memory, it adds.

“The message for the patients with heart failure is to do exercises,” said study author.

The study analysed data from over 600 male patients, aged 67-71 years, with heart failure from six countries. During the research, the “Montreal Cognitive Assessment” test was used to measure cognitive function and exercise capacity was measured with a six-minute walk test.

The results showed the younger and better educated heart failure patients with better fitness were significantly less likely to have cognitive impairment.

Two-thirds of the patients with heart failure had cognitive problems, showed the study.

According to the study, cognitive dysfunction is a common problem in the patients with heart failure with 67 per cent reporting at least mild impairment.

“There is a misconception that patients with heart failure should not exercise. That is clearly not the case,” the Dr. said.

“Find an activity you enjoy and which you can do regularly. It could be walking, swimming or any other activities. There is good evidence that it will improve your health and memory, and make you feel better,” the Dr. said.

5 scientifically proven benefits of being born during the holiday season

If you’re having a baby during one of the busiest months of the year, take heart! While December is certainly a cosy month that provides you with quality cuddle-time with your newborn, it seems there are more reasons to love having a baby around this time of the year. In fact, sharing your birth month with the Lord Jesus Christ could actually benefit you in tremendous ways.

Good news for people born in the month of December right? Now, take a look at some surprising reasons why babies born during the holiday season are ‘super special’.

They are more likely to live longer

According to a study published , babies born in the last month of the year have higher chances of living up to the age of 105, or even longer.

They are less irritable

Interestingly, December-born babies were found to be less irritable. One study showed that babies those born in summer tended to be moody. However, those born in the winter months, December in particular, showed fewer temper tantrums, which means they are nicer people.

They are pretty healthy

A study done by the researchers suggested that December babies have a lower risk of developing major health conditions, including cardiovascular disease. Reportedly, the study, which included 1.75 million people from the United States, looked at 1,668 diseases, birth months and other factors, such as exercise and diet.

They are a morning person

The health advantages of being a morning person are plentiful - they are fitter and more likely to be happy among many others. Research has found that people born in December tend to follow this golden rule - ‘early to bed, and early to rise’.

They are rare

It’s a fact that babies are considered rare, especially if they are born on Christmas day, December 25, making their birthdays more special. Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25.
