6 Things That Are Naturally Antibacterial to Safely Disinfect Your Home

Disinfecting your home with natural, non-toxic cleaners may sound like an overwhelming task, but it’s actually surprisingly simple. In fact, the majority of naturally antibacterial disinfectants can be found right in your kitchen and at a fraction of the cost of those harsh chemical cleaners. Natural cleaners are not only better for your health but are safer for children, animals, and the environment. Keep your home spick-and-span with these hardworking ingredients found right in your pantry.

 White Vinegar

Made from acetic acid and water, white vinegar is a power cleaner—easily cutting through grease and removing mildew, odors, stains, and wax buildup. Thanks to its high acidity, white vinegar reduces surface bacteria, making it a safe alternative to bleach. In a 1994 study, vinegar was found to reduce the amount of bacteria on a hard surface, although it was less effective than commercial cleaners. Vinegar will work for those who value a safe cleaning method and want to rid their homes of harmful chemicals, but it won’t leave surfaces completely bacteria-free.

Vodka

Because most vodka is 80 proof, or 40 percent alcohol by volume, it can be used as a disinfectant to remove mold and mildew. Like vinegar, vodka degreases, removes stains, shines fixtures, and refreshes fabric—but without the lingering sour odor. For the most antibacterial power, look for 100-proof vodka (as most store-bought hand sanitizers contain at least 60 percent alcohol), and let it sit for a few minutes so the alcohol can do its job.

Lemon

The citric acid in lemons works wonderfully on alkaline stains like soap scum found in bathrooms and kitchens. Lemons can also be used to sanitize non-porous surfaces and shine oxidized metal (hint: use it to make old copper pots and pans sparkle). In a study, lemon also worked to reduce bacteria on hard surfaces, but was less effective than both vinegar and commercial cleaners. Although lemon is less effective than vinegar, it certainly wins in the scent department.

Hydrogen Peroxide

If you ever got a cut on the playground as a kid, you may already know the familiar sting of hydrogen peroxide in action. Since the 1920s, hydrogen peroxide has been used as an antiseptic on cuts because of its abilities to kill bacteria by breaking down cell walls. It can also be used to kill mold and remove stains on white clothing. Caution should be taken when cleaning with hydrogen peroxide, as it will bleach colorful fibers and etch the surface of stone over time.

Essential Oils

Versatile and great smelling, essential oils have a wide range of medicinal and healing properties. It comes as no surprise that they are also quite powerful agents against bacteria and fungus. When added to vodka or a solution of soap and water, some essential oils can enhance the cleaning properties, helping rid your home of mold, mildew, and musty smells. There are a bunch of bacteria-fighting essential oils to choose from, particularly tea tree, citronella, geranium, lemongrass, orange, and patchouli. Currently, scientists are still studying essential oils’ bacteria-fighting abilities, including its  potential use as an antibiotic.

Steam

The simple combination of water and heat makes for the ultimate economical and chemical-free disinfectant. When heated to at least 200 degrees Fahrenheit, steam not only eliminates tough stuck-on stains and grease, but can also sanitize both hard and soft surfaces. While steaming may be a slower process—sometimes taking up to 20 seconds to fully sanitize one area—If used properly, steam is capable of removing bacteria, germs, dust mites, and other pathogens.

Honorable Mention: Castile Soap

With its roots in the Castile region of Spain, Castile soap, once made from olive oil, is now often made from a blend of vegetable oils. Quick to lather, a drop of Castile soap is all that’s needed to get dishes, bathtubs, or just about any surface squeaky clean. While the soap generally isn’t antibacterial on its own, a Dr. recommends a homemade solution that adds tea tree essential oil to make your own naturally bacteria-fighting cleanser.

World Asthma Day: Know about the different kinds of asthma

Today is World Asthma day. I sincerely pray for good health for all those affected by this respiratory disease, which has different stages too, as I've graduated to the next stage called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ! At least for something, I've graduated to the next level, it makes me happy ! Life is short, be happy, then all your problems will disappear. Above all, have total belief in the Almighty, by whatever name you may call, that Supreme Power will surely help you tide over the difficult days which the whole of mankind is facing now.

These are different types of asthma

Asthma is a chronic medical condition that affects the airways making it difficult to breathe. The air passage narrows and swells, leading to wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. As per the World Health Center (WHO), 15–20 million people in India are suffering from asthma and of all, 10%–15% are children. Asthma can be mild and may require no treatment but some can be life-threatening. It is mostly triggered by external factors like allergens, irritant, viruses, exercise, stress, and others. Asthma is classified into different types, depending on their symptoms and triggers. Understanding the triggers can help you manage your condition more tactfully.

Allergic asthma

Allergens triggered asthma is the most common of all. It accounts for 60 per cent of all asthma. Coming in contact with common triggers like pollens, moulds, dust mites, and animal dander can set off your immune reaction, causing inflammation of your airways. Runny nose, constant sneezing, swollen nasal passages, excess mucus, weepy eyes, and a scratchy throat are some common symptoms of allergic asthma.

Exercise-induced asthma

As the name suggests, exercise-induced asthma is triggered by exercising or involving any kind of physical activity. Many people develop symptoms of asthma after exercising, while others have the issue only while exercising. The air passage inflates after a person starts exercising, making it difficult for them to catch their breath. Wheezing and coughing are common symptoms of exercise-induced asthma.

Occupational asthma

Sometimes even the environment may put you at the risk of asthma, especially if you work in such surroundings. A person suffering from occupational asthma may have difficulty in breathing when they are at work. Runny nose, eye irritation or wheezing are common symptoms of this type of asthma. Barbers, farmers, hairdressers, painters often suffer from this issue. It is triggered by chemicals or small particles.

Nocturnal asthma

Nocturnal asthma or nighttime asthma can disturb your sleep at night. If your symptoms of asthma-like wheezing, cough, and breathlessness increase particularly at night then you are dealing with nocturnal asthma. Almost 40 per cent of people experience this type of asthma on a daily basis. This happens because asthma is highly influenced by the sleep-wake cycle.

11 foods that are good for your lungs

Asthma is a chronic condition triggered by certain allergens that cause breathlessness, wheezing and coughing by affecting the lungs.

This happens because when in contact with an allergen, the mucous membrane gets irritated and as a result, the airways swell up.

Asthma is most often not treated as a critical affliction but doctors are of the opinion that it cannot only cause severe discomfort but can also be fatal.

According to a study conducted by Word Health Organisation, today, about 235 million people around the world suffer from asthma.

There are two major causes of asthma: environmental and genetic.

Asthma triggers
Asthma triggers are different from person to person and can include:
  • Airborne substances, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, pet dander or particles of cockroach waste
  • Respiratory infections, such as the common cold
  • Physical activity (exercise-induced asthma)

Campaign on asthma awareness

A Health technology firm  has launched a new campaign in a bid to raise awareness around asthma and associated respiratory issues, especially among children.

This multichannel initiative is launched with the intention of bridging the gap in knowledge around managing asthma, risks of asthma attacks and its triggers associated with indoor pollution.

According to the company, an estimated 15 million-20 million of the total Indian population suffers from asthma. “It has been observed that asthma is prevalent in roughly 10%-15% of children aged between 5-11 years old.”

The strongest risk factors for developing asthma are exposure, especially in infancy, to indoor pollutants (such as house dust mites in bedding, carpets and stuffed furniture, cats and cockroaches, PM2.5 and pollen) and a family history of asthma or allergy.

As a part of the initiative, the company is running a campaign tilted ‘‘Help your child Fight against Asthma” across its social media handles including, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Google Display Network. In addition to this, it is also distributing leaflets in catchment areas to spread awareness around Asthma and its prevention.

Moreover, the company will be organising live demonstrations across 100 consumer electronics and appliances stores in the country, reaching out to respiratory patients and parents of young kids to spread awareness around health impacts of indoor air pollution, and how air purifiers help in combating asthma triggers.

Speaking on the occasion the head of the department of respiratory and sleep medicine, said, “Cases of Asthma and other respiratory allergies are on the rise. With poor air quality and rising air pollution, our purpose is to reduce the number of people suffering from asthma with proper diagnosis and treatment.”

On the campaign initiative, a researcher said, “We believe that combating Asthma starts at home, and prevention is the key. This campaign is in line with our endeavour to spread awareness to reduce asthma triggers at home and provide effective solutions to consumers to manage their Asthma symptoms better.”
