High Vitamin D dose may rapidly cut arterial stiffness

High-doses of Vitamin D can potentially reduce arterial stiffness — a major risk factor for cardiovascular-related disease and death — in young vitamin-deficient obese adults, researchers say.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, with an estimated 17.7 million deaths in 2015, and representing 31 per cent of all global deaths.

Rigid artery walls and Vitamin D deficiency might be the potential contributors, said a geneticist and cardiologist .

The findings showed that the dose of 4,000 international units (IUs)– more than six times the daily 600 IUs currently recommended for most adults and children — now considered the highest, reduced arterial stiffness the most and the fastest, 10.4 per cent in four months.

Two thousand IUs decreased stiffness by two per cent in that timeframe.

“When your arteries are stiffer, you have higher pulse wave velocity, which increases your risk of cardiometabolic disease in the future,” said a research resident.

For the study, detailed in the journal , the team looked at African-Americans aged 13-45 — all of whom had some degree of arterial stiffness — taking varying doses of the vitamin best known for its role in bone health.

While just how Vitamin D is good for our arteries is not completely understood, it appears to impact blood vessel health in many ways, the researchers said.

Laboratory studies have shown that mice missing a vitamin D receptor have higher activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, activation of which increases blood vessel constriction, that can contribute to arterial stiffness.

Vitamin D also can suppress vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, activation of garbage-eating macrophages and calcification formation, all of which can thicken blood vessel walls and hinder flexibility.

Vitamin D also reduces inflammation, an underlying mechanism for the obesity-related development of coronary artery disease, the researcher said.

WANT TO KNOW WHY HEART ATTACKS ARE MORE IN WINTER?

The risk of suffering a heart attack is more likely to peak in the winter season and decline in summers because air temperature acts as an external trigger for the life threatening disease, an analysis has shown. The findings revealed that the average number of heart attacks per day was significantly higher during colder temperatures as compared to warmer. When the daily temperature dropped to less than zero degree Celsius, the average rate of heart attacks a day peaked to four, as compared to when it was above 10 degrees. Furthermore, the occurrence of heart attacks increased with higher wind velocities, limited sunshine duration and higher air humidity.  “There is seasonal variation in the occurrence of heart attack, with incidence declining in summer and peaking in winter,” said lead author .

“Our results consistently showed a higher occurrence of heart attacks in sub-zero temperatures. The findings were the same across a large range of patient subgroups, and at national as well as regional levels, suggesting that air temperature is a trigger for heart attacks,” the author added. The body responds to cold by constricting superficial blood vessels, which decreases thermal conduction in the skin and subsequently increases arterial blood pressure. Other responses are shivering and increased heart rate, which raise the metabolic rate and in turn increase body temperature, the researchers explained. “In the majority of healthy people these mechanisms are well tolerated. But in people with atherosclerotic plaques in their coronary arteries they may trigger a heart attack,” the author noted. Respiratory tract infections and influenza are also known risk factors for heart attack that have a clear seasonal variation. “In addition, seasonal-dependent behaviours such as reduced physical activity and dietary changes could also play a role in the increased occurrence of heart attack during colder weather,”the author said.  For the study, the team investigated the association between heart attack incidence and weather conditions such as air temperature, sunshine duration, precipitation, and air pressure in more than 2,80,000 patients.

5 easy tips to stop snoring

Believe it or not, but snoring is a serious trouble. If a person snores occasionally, it is quite normal. But, if one tends to snore very often, it is time to be cautious as this can lead to serious problems.
Snoring can signify sleep apnea, which is a potentially life-threatening condition that needs to be discussed with a doctor. It can also lead to trouble in your relationship with your spouse as it hinders their good night sleep.

Snoring happens when one can't move air freely through his/her nose and mouth while sleeping.
Here are a few tips how to deal with the problem:
-One should try sleeping on his/her side rather than back because while doing this, the tongue and muscles in the throat collapse, which restrict snoring.
-Use of nasal spray to provide temporary relief from nasal congestion can also help in solving the problem.
-Avoid consuming alcohol, at least 4 hours before going to bed and also cut down on cigarettes.
-Being overweight can also lead to snoring. So, it is advised to maintain a healthy weight.
-Use higher pillows as they help in keeping the airways open by supporting the neck so the throat is less constricted.

Common acid reflux drug could cause heart disease

If taken regularly, PPIs could lead to a variety of cardiovascular problems over time, including hypertension and a weakened heart.

A new study suggests that drugs that help millions of people cope with acid reflux may also cause cardiovascular disease.

It is the first time researchers have shown how proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, might cause cardiovascular problems.

In human tissue and mouse models, the researchers  found PPIs caused the constriction of blood vessels.

If taken regularly, PPIs could lead to a variety of cardiovascular problems over time, including hypertension and a weakened heart.

In the paper, the scientists call for a broad, large-scale study to determine whether PPIs are dangerous.

“The surprising effect that PPIs may impair vascular health needs further investigation,”  the study’s principal investigator, said.

“Our work is consistent with previous reports that PPIs may increase the risk of a second heart attack in people that have been hospitalized with an acute coronary syndrome.

“Patients taking PPIs may wish to speak to their doctors about switching to another drug to protect their stomachs, if they are at risk for a heart attack,” he said.
