Asthma Triggers

 What Are Asthma Triggers?

One way to help manage your child's asthma is to avoid asthma triggers. Triggers are things that can make asthma flare-ups more likely to happen.

Common asthma triggers include:

respiratory infections, like colds, the flu, or COVID-19
allergies to things like pollen, mold, and pet dander
irritants and pollutants in the air, like cigarette smoke or smog
weather conditions, like cold and dry air, or hot and humid air
strong emotions, like laughing, crying, or feeling stressed
    exercise

Kids can't avoid all triggers all the time. But watching carefully to learn what those triggers are and then helping your child avoid them can keep asthma symptoms under control.

What Are My Child's Asthma Triggers?

Triggers are different for each child. Some might cause asthma symptoms only at particular times of the year. Others might stop being a trigger as a child gets older and "outgrows" asthma.

You'll work with your doctor to find your child's triggers. The doctor may suggest keeping an asthma diary to record your child's symptoms and the medicines they use. You can also write down when and where symptoms happened to help you identify possible triggers.

If your doctor thinks allergies might be triggering asthma flare-ups, your child might need an allergy skin test.

How Can We Avoid Asthma Triggers?
If Infections Are a Trigger

Respiratory infections are the most common trigger of asthma flare-ups in kids. For kids with asthma, breathing problems triggered by colds can last days or even weeks after the cold has gone away.

They can be hard to avoid, but there are some things that can help. Teach everyone in your family to wash their hands well and often. Everyone age 6 months and older should get the annual flu vaccine and an updated COVID-19 vaccine. All babies should be protected against severe RSV infection, either by mom getting vaccinated during the pregnancy or through an antibody shot that babies get during or just before RSV season.

Vaccinating the whole family against these viruses is an important way to help protect kids with asthma, who are at greater risk for health problems if they get infected.

If Allergens Are a Trigger

Allergens (things that cause allergic reactions) are another common cause of asthma flare-ups. These triggers include:

animal dander (tiny flakes of dead skin), saliva (spit), urine (pee), and feathers
    cockroaches
    dust mites
    mold
    pollen

It's impossible to avoid all allergens, but you can minimize them in your home. Focus on the rooms where your child sleeps and plays:

Keep these areas as clean and dust-free as possible. Vacuum and dust weekly, get rid of clutter, give away unneeded stuffed animals and wash other stuffed animals in hot water regularly.
Wash sheets weekly in hot water and get rid of feather pillows and comforters.
Use hypoallergenic covers for the mattress, box spring, and pillows.
Remove rugs and carpeting wherever possible.
Clean curtains (which should be washable) often.
Make sure damp areas like bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms are cleaned often and properly ventilated to prevent mold and mildew. Run dehumidifiers in damp areas.
    Don't use humidifiers.
Check your local mold and pollen count readings and plan indoor activities for windy days, which can lead to high counts.
Use bait traps or professional pest control to rid your home of cockroaches. Keep your kitchen clean and your house free of stacks of paper.

If Irritants Are a Trigger

Irritants can affect anyone — even someone who doesn't have asthma. They're not usually a serious problem, but for kids with asthma, they can lead to flare-ups.

Common irritants include:

    perfumes
    aerosol sprays
    cleaning products
    wood and tobacco smoke
    paint or gas fumes
    air pollution

Here are some ways to reduce household irritants:

If a product triggers your child's asthma, switch to an unscented or non-aerosol version of it.
Don't have wood fires in your home.
Keep your child away from areas where painting or carpentry work is being done.
If you cook on a gas stove, make sure your kitchen is well ventilated — to the outside, if possible.
Ban smoking in your home and car, and make sure your child avoids smoky environments (like restaurants or parties).
Consider buying an air cleaner for your home or running the air conditioning year-round (clean the filter regularly). Also check air quality reports. On days when the quality is especially bad, keep your child indoors with the air conditioning on.

If Extreme Weather Is a Trigger

Some weather conditions can trigger asthma flare-ups, including:

windy conditions (which may stir up pollens and molds)
heavy rain (which can make trees and grasses produce more pollen)
    extreme cold or heat
    humidity or very dry air

If weather conditions are a trigger, keep an eye on the forecast and limit your child's time outdoors on problem days. If cold weather is a trigger, cover your child's nose and mouth with a scarf. If hot, humid weather is a problem, keep your child in an air-conditioned environment.

In some cases, your child's medicine dose may need to be increased.

If Exercise Is a Trigger

Exercise might be the only trigger for some kids with asthma. Along with respiratory infections and allergens, this is one of the more common triggers. It can be a particular problem in someone whose asthma isn't well-managed. But this is one trigger that your child should not avoid because exercise is important for overall health.

Don't discourage being active or playing sports. Instead, talk with the doctor about what your child should do before, during, and after exercise. This may include taking medicine before working out or playing a sport.

Seeing greenery reduces cravings for alcohol, cigarettes, harmful foods

There are numerous benefits of connecting with nature. New research showed that being able to see green spaces from your home is associated with reduced carvings for alcohol, cigarettes and harmful foods.

The study is the first to demonstrate that passive exposure to nearby green space is linked to both lower frequencies and strengths of craving.

It builds on previous research suggesting exercising in nature can reduce cravings, by demonstrating the same may be true irrespective of physical activity.

Researchers say the findings add to evidence that point to the need to protect and invest in green spaces within towns and cities, in order to maximise the public health benefits they may afford. They also suggested the causality of this link needs to be investigated further.

The study is the first to investigate the relationship between exposure to natural environments, craving for a range of appetitive substances and the experiencing of negative emotions or feelings.
It has been known for some time that being outdoors in nature is linked to a person's well-being. But for there to be a similar association with cravings from simply being able to see green spaces adds a new dimension to previous research. This is the first study to explore this idea, and it could have a range of implications for both public health and environmental protection programs in the future, said the lead author of the study.

Among other things, the study measured the proportion of green space in an individual's residential neighbourhood, the presence of green views from their home, their access to a garden or allotment and their frequency of use of public green-spaces.

The results showed that having access to a garden or allotment was associated with both lower craving strength and frequency, while residential views incorporating more than 25% green-space evoked similar responses.

The study also measured physical activity undertaken within the same time frame that cravings were assessed, showing the reduced craving occurred irrespective of physical activity level.

Craving contributes to a variety of health-damaging behaviours such as smoking, excessive drinking and unhealthy eating. In turn, these can contribute to some of the greatest global health challenges of our time, including cancer, obesity and diabetes. Showing that lower craving is linked to more exposure to green spaces is a promising first step. Future research should investigate if and how green spaces can be used to help people withstand problematic cravings, enabling them to better manage cessation attempts in the future, added one of the researchers.

9 Worst Things Which Worsens Arthritis

Are you one of 53 million people who have arthritis? Arthritis is the collective name for over 100 joint diseases affecting both adults and children. It can cause joint pain, swelling, inflammation, and affects your range of motion. It can also get worse as you age and may even begin to harm your organs and skin.

When it comes to choosing food that helps to alleviate symptoms, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, there are food ingredients that tend to affects everyone differently, given that there are so many different diseases that fall under the same umbrella. However, if you are trying to treat your body like a temple to get your symptoms under control, you will need to avoid the following things – especially number 3 and 6.
All of these ingredients can worsen inflammation, leading to swelling, discomfort, pain, joint damage and a limited range of motion.

1. Fried Food

Everyone loves a treat of deep-fried food from time to time, but how much you have can be the difference between a body that’s free from inflammation, and one that’s causing you a lot of pain and discomfort!
Fried food is in no way beneficial for your health. It can lead to diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, and causes inflammation which affects your joints. However, new research suggests that eating less fried food can reduce inflammation which has to be beneficial for your bones!

2. Corn Oil

If you like to indulge in bakery goods from time to time, then you may notice it affects your arthritic joints negatively. That might be because they contain corn oil which can trigger inflammation in your bones.

3. Cigarettes

We already know that cigarettes are harmful to our overall health, but they can also cause inflammation which is one of the worst problems for people living with arthritis. While cigarettes are not necessarily food, they are something that close to 37 million people in the United States have every day.

If you aren’t going to quit cigarettes for the health of your lungs, you can at least do it for your joints. Smokers are also more at risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis than those who do not smoke.
Pay attention to ingredients in your snacks from now on. Make sure that instead of corn oil, use oil that contains omega-3 fats , such as olive oil which is an anti-inflammatory option instead.

4. Candy

A sweet treat from time to time is not going to do any long-term damage, but include it in your daily diet, and you may run into problems!

Candy and other high-sugar sweets are responsible for many health conditions such as poor dental health, cellular aging, and diabetes, but they can also be responsible for gout.

Gout is an inflammatory disease that causes pain in your joints. Sugar raises your uric acid levels which bring about the worsening of gout symptoms, or the development of new ones.

5. Cheese & Dairy

There is a delicate balance between helpful and harmful with milk and related products. However, if you are typically quite sensitive to food products with regard to your arthritic symptoms, then cutting out the cheese and milk might be something you may like to consider.

Dairy, for some people, can cause and enhance joint and arthritic pain due to their proteins. While other people have no problem at all, you may like to cut out different dairy options and see if your discomfort worsens or gets better.

6. Trans Fats

Out of all fats available for consumption, trans fat is by far the worst. It can cause inflammation which can affect your joint helath and increase your likelihood of developing chronic conditions as well.
Trans fat has no benefits and is prevalent in many fried and snack foods. According to various studies, there is also no confirmed “safe” consumption level. Avoid it completely and don’t eat food with “partially hydrogenated oils” on the packaging.

7. MSG

MSG, also known as Mono-Sodium Glutamate, is a leading player in joint inflammation and liver health. While its primary goal is to flavor food, it’s not doing your body any favors as it goes about it.
Unfortunately, MSG is in many common foods – especially Asian cuisine and sauces. However, some manufacturers also put it in deli meat, soup, and even salad dressing. Avoid it at all costs – particularly if you suffer from a joint condition.

8. Refined Carbohydrates

While carbohydrates are not the worst offenders for inflammation, refined carbs are. White rice, bread, and even white potatoes can all cause inflammation that affects the health of your joints.
These foods are known as high-glycemic index foods, and too much of them can also escalate the rate of obesity. Do your joints and body a favor and opt for wholegrain variety foods instead. Your body and pain levels will thank you for it.

9. Alcohol

A tipple of liquor every now and again is not going to cause your body too much grief, but if you suffer from a joint condition such as arthritis, you are best to consume in moderation.

As most people know, alcohol can do tremendous damage to your liver. When you disrupt your liver, you can then suffer from pain and inflammation in your joints.

However, there are some upsides to alcohol consumption. Some research shows that up to 10 grams of alcohol per day may be able to reduce your risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

Once you’ve got arthritis, you’ve got it for life, and you will find there are times where your pain levels are at their highest. While medication can go a long way to relieving your pain and discomfort, there are also ingredients and food that can help or hinder it too.

Pay attention to these nine items above. Everything from cigarettes to carbohydrates can be causing inflammation, and you may not even realize it. Take control of your diet and notice the difference!

DEADLY CHEMICALS IN CIGARETTES WHICH SLOWLY KILLS YOU

By smoking a cigarette, only not only puts their life in danger but also those around them, as they're also inhaling the smoke, which is known as second-hand smoke.

Tobacco is the chief ingredient of cigarette and there are over 4000 chemicals compounds created by burning cigarette, 69 of those are known to cause cancer as well as damage the heart and its blood vessels! 6 of these chemicals and their actual usage and side effects are listed below:

  1. Nicotine: A naturally occurring chemical in tobacco, which when reaches your brain triggers adrenaline, by increasing your blood pressure and gives you a high. It is a chemical which makes you addictive to cigarette.
  2. Arsenic: A common chemical used in rat poison. Exposure to high levels of arsenic can be fatal. Over time, it accumulates in smokers’ bodies and can lead to liver and kidney damage, irregular heartbeat and shortage of red and white blood cells.
  3. Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong smelling chemical which is used to preserve dead bodies and is found in cigarette smoke. Short term exposure to it can cause nausea, skin irritation and burning in eyes, nose and throat, it is a lesser known fact that long term exposure to it can cause cancer.
  4. Benzene: A flammable liquid commonly found in gasoline, coal tar and crude oil. Long term exposure to Benzene decreases red blood cells, damages bone marrow and increases your risk of blood cancer leukemia).
  5. Polonium: A highly radioactive substance and regular consumption can cause diarrhea, vomiting and hair fall. Over time it causes severe damage to kidney and liver along with your DNA.
  6. Cyanide: The most lethal type of poison, which prevents the body to use and absorb oxygen when inhaled.
Would you still want to smoke and damage your organs. Don't think twice, quit smoking once and for all. Nothing is impossible.

E-Cigarettes Equally Damaging to Gums, Teeth as Conventional Cigarettes

Many people have been shifting from conventional cigarettes to electronic cigarettes in the assumption that the electric ones are safer and less harmful than the conventional ones. However, a new study revealed that e-cigarettes may do the equal amount of damage to gums and tissue as conventional cigarette.

The study, published in the journal Oncotarget, showed for the first time that e-cigarettes have detrimental effects on oral health on cellular and molecular levels.

E-cigarettes commonly contain a battery, heating device and cartridge to hold the liquid. The liquids used in e-cigarette, or also known as e-juice, may contain nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. This battery-powered device works by heating the liquid in the cartridge, turning it into vapor that will be inhaled by the user.

"We showed that when the vapors from an e-cigarette are burned, it causes cells to release inflammatory proteins, which in turn aggravate stress within cells, resulting in damage that could lead to various oral diseases," explained Irfan Rahman, Ph.D. professor of Environmental Medicine at the UR School of Medicine and Dentistry and lead author of the study, in a press release. "How much and how often someone is smoking e-cigarettes will determine the extent of damage to the gums and oral cavity."

For the study, the researchers exposed 3-D human, non-smoker gum tissue to the vapors of e-cigarette. The researchers found that flavoring chemicals play a role in damaging cells in the mouth, with some flavorings more damaging than others. Aside from the flavoring chemicals, the researchers also noted that e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is also known to contribute to gum disease.

With their findings, the researchers hope for further research regarding the safety and potential adverse health effects of e-cigarettes. The researchers are also urging manufacturers to disclose all materials and chemicals used in their products, informing consumers about the potential danger of e-cigarette.
