Look for These Symptoms that can be a Sign of High Blood Pressure

Hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the most concerning health issues around the globe. It is a state in which the blood pressure level rises to extreme levels causing severe complications such as kidney diseases and heart attack.

These complications have become a leading cause of premature death in parts of world including India. High blood pressure can be caused by a range of reasons including obesity, stress, and diabetes among others. https://www.webmd.com/

People, whose intake of minerals like potassium, magnesium, and calcium is insufficient, are also at greater risk of developing hypertension. Moreover, if your family members are suffering from high blood pressure, then you are also likely to experience the same.

Experts suggest that it is possible that you may be suffering from high blood pressure without even knowing it. This is because hypertension doesn’t have any symptoms and doctors advise patients to monitor their blood pressure through checkups and BP machines.

However, if a person has extremely high blood pressure, then some signs may start to show up. If you are having severe headaches, chest pain, and irregular heartbeat or facing vision problems, then it is advised to see a doctor and get your blood pressure checked.

Other symptoms of extremely high blood pressure include difficulty breathing, nosebleed, fatigue and confusion. Some patients may also find blood in their urine due to high blood pressure.

When the blood pressure gets too high, it can cause the arteries supplying blood and oxygen and blood to the brain to be blocked or burst. This can lead to a brain stroke where brain cells die due to lack of oxygen supply. The excess blood pressure in the arteries also causes them to get less elastic which in turn affects the flow of oxygen to the heart and can cause a heart attack or heart failure. In addition, hypertension can also damage kidney in the patient and cause chronic kidney diseases.

‘One person suffers a brain stroke every 20 seconds in India’

Every 20 seconds, one Indian suffers a brain stroke, or three every minute and the numbers are increasing alarmingly due to changing lifestyles. At this rate, around 1.54 million Indians are affected by strokes every year and 90 % stroke patients filed to reach hospital on time. The lifetime risk of stroke after the age of 55 is one in 5 for women and one in 6 for men.

This was discussed recently at a neuro-vascular intervention. The aim was to spread the message- " stroke is beatable".

The hospital's seniot consultant neurosurgeon and interventional neurosurgeon said that, " in a brain stroke, you may be gone, you may recover and become normal, or you become dependent for life". He explained that inline the symptoms of heart attack in  strokes, symptoms my vary depending on which side of the brain  is affected.

Stroke is a sudden loss of function of the body. The simple rule is Be Fast- balance, eyes, face, arms, speech, time, he advised. If a person suffers from problems in balancing, hoarseness in voice, sudden loss of vision, drops an object, giddiness, they must be rushed to the hospital. The SNVICON also saw the latest technology being used for treatment of stroke. A New web device was launched. He cautioned that treatment for brain strokes cannot start at home, and a CT or an MRI scan is necessary.

Can Lifestyle Changes Help To Prevent Brain Stroke?

As the famous quote says, 'prevention is better than cure', let us take you through some preventive measures to keep you and your loved ones away from the dreadful brain stroke. Brain stroke occurs due to an interruption in the regular blood flow to the brain or bursting of a blood vessel or due to the bursting of a blocked artery, which reduces the supply of oxygen and nutrients, leading the brain cells to die.

Top 8 things that will reduce the likelihood of having a brain stroke:
  1. Eat well: Having good eating habits are not just good for a healthy outlook of the body, but also benefits the body in many other ways. Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, fibre rich diet, reducing salt and fat content can prevent stroke.
  2. Stay active: Regular exercising not just makes you feel and look good, but also reduces the odds of developing a brain stroke. Exercising regularly or keeping the physical activities regularly will keep you away from suffering a stroke. Pick any physical activity, but do work out to stay away from the brain stroke.
  3. Say no to smoking and drugs: Yes! The more you smoke, the more are the chances of you of suffering the deadly brain stroke.
  4. Control your blood pressure: The ideal blood pressure for a healthy person is 120/88 mm HG. Regular check-up of blood pressure is advisable to control the chances of suffering a stroke as high blood pressure can result in damage of arteries, which causes brain stroke.
  5. Drink in limits: Limit the amount of alcohol you consume, as alcohol increases the blood pressure, which is one of the main reasons behind the stroke. The high amount of alcohol can increase blood pressure to a higher level very quickly. Consulting a doctor is the best option in case you are not able to control your alcohol intake.
  6. Cholesterol: People suffering from high cholesterol are at higher risk of strokes as the cholesterol can travel to the arteries in the body making the arteries narrow and the body more prone to suffer a stroke. Choosing a healthy lifestyle helps in reducing the cholesterol level.
  7. Diabetes: High level of diabetes is one of the most prominent reasons behind the stroke. One should get his diabetes level checked and keep it under control since the arteries might get blocked because of fatty deposits because of higher sugar levels.
  8. Depression / Stress: Any kind of depression or stress, generally leads to avoidance of all or some of the points discussed above and hence becomes a reason for an unhealthy body, which is more prone to strokes. Consultation with a doctor and/or psychiatrist is advisable in case a person is suffering from depression.
Improving your health and taking charge of your life should be the top most priority and should never be ignored.

Some ways to prevent brain stroke

A 'brain stroke' or a ' brain attack' is an event and condition that many of us know little about, but each one of us has the capacity to prevent and detect.

Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia says that when the brain is deprived of blood and the oxygen it carries, or when bleeding inundates surrounding tissue and causes the brain to swell, its effective operation becomes compromised. Both incidents can cause lasting vision problems, seizures, fatigue, loss of speech, memory loss, and paralysis among other adverse effects. If severe enough, they can also cause death.
In low-and middle-income countries, which include those of the WHO South-East Asia Region, over 11 million strokes occur every year. This causes 4 million deaths annually, and leaves approximately 30 percent of survivors seriously disabled. For the 70 percent of survivors who recover, the likelihood of suffering further strokes is greatly increased.

People with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes or a high blood-sugar level are vulnerable to brain stroke. So are people that are obese, smoke or consume alcohol in large volumes and are physically inactive. In addition, the risk of stroke increases with age, while males are more likely to suffer a stroke than females.

Most of the lifestyle-related risks can be reduced to prevent brain stroke. People who smoke should quit, and those who drink heavily should cease. These two factors alone significantly multiply the likelihood of stroke.

A diet high in vegetables and fruit and low in salt should be consumed. Doing so will decrease fatty deposits in the arteries that can cause blockages, as well as diminish the prospect of burst vessels that high blood pressure brings.

Regular exercise should be undertaken - at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity at least five times a week. Blood pressure, blood-sugar and cholesterol levels should be checked regularly, with associated conditions managed in consultation with a health care provider.

These simple but effective habits can help prevent brain stroke and other non-communicable diseases such as heart disease and diabetes.
Identifying stroke's early warning signs is equally important to prevent disability or death. There are three key signs to watch out for - Is the face drooping on one side? Is there weakness in one arm? Is the speech slurred? If the answer is yes to one or all of the above, the person may be having a stroke and needs urgent medical care.
Our health systems must be in a position to act decisively.

On World Stroke Day, we need to spread awareness on stroke prevention, understand the symptoms and when to seek immediate care, and have a well-prepared health system to save lives and prevent lifelong disability.
