These 5 Mental Illnesses Can Go Undiagnosed For Years

People suffer from these medical health conditions for years before being properly diagnosed. We are talking about mental health issues. Society has made significant progress in recognizing, diagnosing, and erasing the stigma surrounding mental health. But even with all this mental health awareness, many conditions are either misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) suggest that less than half of the people suffering from psychological disorders are diagnosed and receive proper medical treatment. The five mental health conditions we list below are particularly likely to fly under the radar according to mental health experts.

1. Depression
Depression is one of the most common and well-known mental health issues. Still, the condition is tragically underreported and underdiagnosed all across the world. Even in the US, a country where mental health awareness is rather high, only half of the people suffering from depression are diagnosed and connected with the right treatment. Depression is even more severely under-detected in developing countries.

The main problem with detecting depression is the fact that the condition can present itself in many different ways. For some, sadness and sleepiness are the main symptoms, but for others, depression manifests itself through headaches, cognitive decline, or even anger.

Underdiagnosed Mental Health Conditions depression Like One social category that’s severely underdiagnosed with depression is the senior population. Oftentimes, depression can be confused for dementia or misrepresented as a side effect of chronic pain, cancer, or diabetes in older adults. According to Psychiatric Times, symptoms of depression can also coincide with symptoms of bereavement, namely, excessive guilt, worthlessness, visible slowing of physical and emotional reactions, and difficulty completing daily tasks. This is why depression is also often dismissed as grief.

It’s important to understand the full picture of depression and its many manifestations to get timely treatment for loved ones or yourself. To read more about the symptoms of depression, consider reading these resources:

2. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Posttraumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a mental condition that develops in response to an extremely traumatic life event. Disaster survivors, veterans of war, survivors of abuse or assault often manifest symptoms like social isolation, flashbacks, hypervigilance, insomnia, irritability, and loss of interest in daily activities.

These symptoms can be mistaken for other conditions, namely panic disorder, phobias, depression, alcohol abuse, and personality disorders. Scientists don’t know why people develop PTSD in response to traumatic events, but research shows that 20% of those who have been through some kind of trauma develop PTSD.

Oftentimes, the patients themselves are not aware of their condition, until a psychiatrist or therapist asks them about past trauma. “It is commonly missed especially when the client or patient doesn’t talk about the trauma of their past or if the psychiatrist or psychotherapist is not asking questions related to their past trauma. I believe PTSD is more common than it is diagnosed and might even be more common than depression, anxiety, and/or bipolar,” says Evanye Lawson, a licensed counselor.

3. Eating disorders
Underdiagnosed Mental Health Conditions therapy Over 90% of people suffering from eating disorders are not medically diagnosed as underweight, which makes the condition extremely difficult to spot. In addition, eating disorders are often dismissed as something that only affects underweight teenage girls. In reality, eating disorders affect millions of people of every age, sex, and ethnicity, and they are especially rarely diagnosed in men and older people.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan School of Public Health points out, “Stereotypes about who develops eating disorders could contribute to disparities in diagnosis and treatment, with males, those of higher weight, people of color, and the non-affluent most likely to be slipping through the cracks.” All this is extremely alarming because eating disorders are the second deadliest mental illness - 10,200 Americans die because of an eating disorder every year.

4. Bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder (BP) is one of the most serious mental health conditions. There is no cure for BP, but timely treatment can help patients manage their symptoms and prevent aggravation and complications. Patients with BP experience extreme shifts in mood and energy levels, jumping from states of apathy and depression to a state of mania or hypomania, when they feel overexcited or energized, often to a point that they engage in risky or dangerous behavior.

A survey by the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association concluded that 69% of patients with bipolar disorder are misdiagnosed. Of these patients, one-third are misdiagnosed for over 10 years. Most often, bipolar disorder is mistaken for depression. If the doctor fails to ask a depressed patient about manic symptoms, such as abrupt changes in mood, they will misdiagnose them. As Jamie Kreiter, a licensed clinical social worker, explained, “most people come in for treatment when they are depressed and so they meet the diagnostic criteria for depression.”

5. Substance-related issues

Alcoholism, drug use, and substance abuse, in general, are very heavy topics, and not only due to the stigma associated with them. We often think that a person who abuses alcohol, for example, is in control of his or her actions, that they choose to drink. This is not always the case. Yet, due to all the shame surrounding these issues, it easier for some people to hide their addiction than seek help. For this reason, many patients go undiagnosed for years, especially if they fit the mold of a stereotypical alcoholic or addict.

Age is one of the biggest obstacles in the diagnosis of substance-related mental illness. A 2012 report by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) suggested that 5-8million seniors have one or more mental or substance abuse conditions. The study also suggests that these numbers are estimated to increase to 10-14 million by 2030.

Research shows that these kinds of issues are much less likely to be diagnosed in older adults. This is likely due to the fact that the physical and cognitive symptoms of substance abuse often overlap with health conditions associated with aging. Malnutrition, dementia, cognitive decline, unexpected reactions to prescription drugs, and even stroke are all examples of symptoms that could be brought about by substance abuse. Alcoholism is linked to brain pathways

A reccent scientific study states that alcoholism may be due to dysfunction in a specific brain pathway that normally helps keep drinking in check.

Difficulty saying no to alcohol, even when it could clearly lead to harm, is a defining feature of alcohol use disorders. This study takes us a step further in understanding the brain mechanisms underlying compulsive drinking, said a researcher.

Some complex human behaviours including emotion, anxiety and motivation are regulated by the outer layers of the brain-cortex that are primarily responsible brain processes like decision-making. Unlike other addictive substances like cocaine, alcohol has very broad effects on the brain.

Another researcher said, we want to understand how the brain normally regulates drinking, so we can answer questions about what happens when this regulation isn't happening as it should.

The researchers used mice as the subject of experimentation for conducting the research.

Current treatments just aren't effective enough, nearly half of all people treated for AUD ( Alcohol use disorder) relapse within a year of seeking treatment, he said.

For decision effective treatments for alcoholism, scientists first need to understand the difference in the wiring of a normal person's brain and an alcoholic's brain.

Arthritis to cancer, the healing powers of Christmas gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh

WHEN the three wise men rocked up at the baby Jesus' crib, they brought three gifts - gold, frankincense and myrrh.

But although they might sound like bizarre birthday gifts to a newborn to us, they each pack some pretty hefty health benefits.

Sure, we'd rather be receiving a gold necklace or frankincense bath bomb this Christmas, but they've got another uses too.

And the holy gifts aren't the only festive feature to boast some surprising health benefits.

We reveal how certain Christmas staples can help manage chronic conditions:

Gold is obviously super valuable and part of that value is actually down to the fact that gold has been used as a medicine for thousands of years.

During the Victorian era, it was thought to be good for calming the nerves and was used to treat all kinds of issues, from alcoholism to epilepsy.

Even today, gold is used certain parts of the world to alleviate depression and migraines, while gold salts are known to have anti-inflammatory properties and are included in some arthritis drugs to take down swelling.

But more importantly, gold is used to treat some cancers as a way of making standard treatment more effective.

Scientists found that the shiny substance can help to attack prostate cancer when combined with green tea - a discovery they concluded: "may provide significant advances in oncology for use as an effective treatment for prostate and other solid tumours".

But generally, eating a stack of gold is quite pointless as it tends to pass straight through your system.

Frankincense
Frankincense, was supposed to have been brought to the baby Jesus to symbolise his priestly role.

It's a resin used in loads of musky perfumes and incense sticks and today, many wellness practitioners claim that it can help to reduce all kinds of chronic issues.

Scientists have found that frankincense has an active ingredient that can help relieve arthritis by inhibiting the inflammation that breaks down cartilage tissue and causes arthritis pain.

The study confirmed traditional medicinal practices which have used frankincense as a herbal remedy for arthritis in North African and the middle east where the substance grows.

The researchers, however, reviewed studies looking at the benefits of the spice and concluded that "The evidence for the effectiveness of B serrata extracts is encouraging but not compelling".

Myrhh
Like Frankincense, this comes from trees too and again, tends to be used in perfume and incense.

Back in the day, it was used to embalm dead bodies (so a cheery gift for a little kid...!).

But it has a tonne of medicinal benefits and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years.

Today, it features in many mouthwashes and toothpastes as it's thought to be antibacterial.

It's also found to be potentially toxic to cancer cells and may reduce the development of prostate and colon cancer.

One study has also found it to be good at pain relief and wound healing thanks to its high concentration of antioxidants. It's worth saying, however, that that evidence is only based on animals so more evidence is needed on humans.

Mistletoe
Mistletoe has been found to be effective in treating endometriosis.

Last week, scientists claimed that mistletoe could be the key to finally treating excruciating endometriosis.

Scientists  have found that mistletoe extract can kill the cells which cause the condition.

They took tissue samples from 40 women with severe endometriosis and exposed them to mistletoe extract in lab tests.

And they found that after just 24 hours, the festive foliage stopped endometrial cells from multiplying so easily - reducing the rate at which abnormal tissues grew.

This isn't the first time that the chemicals found in mistletoe have been found to have potential medicinal benefits.

In the past, they've been found to have cancer-busting properties.

In fact, 47 NHS patients  have been receiving mistletoe therapy on top of standard cancer treatments.

A spokesperson for  health board said: “Mistletoe therapy can be integrated with conventional cancer treatment.

Alcohol dependence:signs and symptoms, causes, health risks and how to overcome it

Alcohol dependence, also known as alcoholism, is the most serious form of drinking problem that can lead to serious physical and mental health issues. Commonly referred to as alcohol use disorder, it occurs when a person drinks so much that their body eventually becomes dependent on or addicted to alcohol. Meanwhile, a comprehensive government survey found that an estimated 5.7 crore people in India need treatment for alcohol dependency. The report also showed that there are an estimated 72 lakh individuals who need treatment for cannabis use, 60 lakh for opioids and 11 lakh for sedatives.
The exact cause of alcohol use disorder is still unclear, however, there are certain factors that can increase the risk for developing the disorder, including stressful events such as losing a job or bereavement, having a mental health problem like depression, anxiety, etc. It is claimed that alcohol dependence can also run in families. According to the researchers, early onset of intoxication and drinking can result in heavy drinking and alcohol dependence.

Signs and symptoms of alcohol dependence

People with alcohol use disorder may exhibit the following signs:
  1. Making excuses to drink
  2. Waking up and drinking
  3. Eating poorly or not eating
  4. Being unable to control alcohol intake
  5. Having a high tolerance- consuming more to feel the effects of alcohol
  6. Putting alcohol above personal responsibilities
  7. Craving alcohol when not drinking
  8. Withdrawal symptoms (when not drinking) such as sweating, shaking and nausea
  9. Tremors
  10. Lapses in memory

Alcohol dependence: Health risks, what you can do about it

Limiting or taking regular breaks from alcohol is the best way to prevent and reduce your risk of becoming dependent on alcohol. However, you should seek treatment if you begin to engage in behaviours that are signs of alcohol use disorder.

Alcoholism can seriously damage your liver. It can also lead to a whole range of health complications such as - high blood pressure, nerve damage, heart disease, brain defects, diabetes complications, vision damage, cancer, depression, etc. If you think you may have a problem with alcohol, seeking help sooner rather than later will help you get back on track to living a healthy, fulfilling life.
