Spice in your diet - Benefits and risks involved in consumption of spicy food

The Indian cuisine contains spicy food in abundance. Most dishes are often rendered bland if the spice level is lower than normal, which is a lot. Be it a snack dish such as gol gappe or main course such as chole bhature, the spice level plays a significant role. An average human body reacts distinctly when exposed to spicy food. People may experience watery eyes, nose and burning sensation on the tongue. Some people may also experience hoarseness in their voice. However, is eating spicy food healthy for you? Here is what you need to know about it.

Benefits of spicy food

Here are some health benefits offered by spicy foods:

  1. Reduces inflammation: Spices usually have anti-inflammatory properties. This can be extremely beneficial in treating various health conditions such as headache, autoimmune diseases, nausea and arthritis.
  2. May help prevent cancer: According to a study, it was found that spices may act upon cancer cells and eliminate them or constrict their growth. This can help prevent or slow the growth of cancer cells, thereby reducing the risk of development or aggravation of cancer.
  3. Combats infections: Spices are a rich source of antioxidants and possess anti-bacterial and antimicrobial properties. This can contribute greatly to warding off infections in the body by eliminating disease-causing bacteria.
  4. Help live longer: According to a study by Harvard and China National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, regular and consistent consumption of spices can help a person live longer.
  5. Improves metabolism: Due to the presence of antioxidants, spices can help improve the body's metabolism. This can help with weight management and weight loss and improve digestion.

Risks of spicy food

Everything comes with its set of advantages and disadvantages. Different people have a different level of spice tolerance. Despite the benefits offered, spicy food can cause stomach irritation in some people. Although spicy foods can promote healthy digestion, it can also aggravate already existing digestion issues. Furthermore, it may end up harming the taste buds as people may develop a taste for spicy food and might end up finding every other thing bland, or tasteless. It is always advised to consume spicy food in moderation.

Anxiety may aggravate asthma symptoms and decrease lung function, according to a new study.

The research suggests that therapies aimed at reducing anxiety can help asthma patients better manage the lung disease.

Anxiety sensitivity, in simple terms, is a fear of fear. But when people with anxiety sensitivity also have asthma, their suffering can be far more debilitating and dangerous, because they have difficulty managing their asthma.

The study explores this issue and recommends treatment to help decrease asthma symptoms.

The researchers from the University of Cincinnati in US recruited 101 college undergraduates who reported having asthma.
The experiment aimed to mimic asthma symptoms by having study participants breathe in-and-out through a narrow straw, about the width of a coffee-stirrer straw.

As expected, people who reported higher anxiety sensitivity not only reported greater anxiety during the straw-breathing task, but also experienced greater asthma symptoms and decreased lung function, researchers said.

“Anxiety sensitivity not only helps explain why we see higher rates of anxiety disorders, but also why anxiety is associated with poorer asthma outcomes,” said Alison McLeish, associate professor of psychology at the University of Cincinnati.

As a result, the study recommended interventions for anxiety sensitivity – such as exposure therapy – aimed at reducing the anxiety.

Safety controls were in place during the straw-breathing exercise and all participants were required to have their inhalers with them in case they experienced an asthma attack.

Students were told they could stop at any time during the straw-breathing exercise.

The study appears in the journal Behaviour Modification.

8% of Indians, other South Asians carry heart failure causing mutated gene

A new study has revealed that up to 8 percent of Indians and other South Asians carry gene mutation that causes heart failure and potentially fatal heart attacks.

The study demonstrates how this gene mutation impairs the heart's ability to pump blood and the results could point the way to eventual treatments and prevention strategies for an estimated 55 million people of South Asian descent worldwide, including 200,000 people in the United States, who carry the potentially fatal mutation.

The mutation causes hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most common form of inherited cardiac disease and the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young people. Carriers have about a 80 percent chance of developing heart failure after age 45.

The mutated gene encodes for a protein, called cardiac myosin binding protein-C (cMyBP-C), which controls cardiac muscle contractions and is critical for the normal functioning of the heart. In the mutated gene, 25 base pairs (DNA letters) are missing. As a result, the tail end of the protein is altered.

The findings point the way toward future treatments that would remove the mutant protein from cells and introduce normal cMyBP-C protein. Researchers also hope to identify lifestyle and environmental risk factors that aggravate hypertrophic cardiomyopathy  in people who carry the gene mutation.

Researcher concluded that determining the disease mechanism will help in developing therapies, and is the first priority to prevent the development of heart failure in millions of carriers worldwide.

The study is published in the prestigious Journal of Biological Chemistry.
