Homemade Citrus Enzyme Cleaner and Scrub

So the idea of making my own enzyme cleaner was appealing for several reasons.
  • It’s natural, environmentally-friendly, and non-toxic.
  • It’s made from kitchen scraps!
  • It’s 2 cleaners in one! A liquid spray, plus a powerful baking soda scrub.
  • It’s effective!
Homemade Citrus Enzyme Cleaner and Scrub

Citrus Enzyme Cleaner

Ingredients:
  • 300 g (or about 2 cups) lemon and/or orange scraps
  • 100 g (or about 1/2 cup) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yeast
  • 2-liter plastic bottle
  • 1 liter water
Homemade Citrus Enzyme Cleaner and Scrub
Start by pouring the brown sugar into the 2-liter plastic bottle. I used a straw to get the brown sugar through a funnel.

Cut the lemon and orange scraps into pieces small enough to fit the mouth of the bottle. Put them in the bottle and then add the yeast.

Next, add one liter of tap water into the bottle. Tightly screw the cap and dissolve the sugar by shaking the bottle for about 30 seconds. For the next couple of weeks, you’ll give the bottle a shake once a day, making sure to leave the bottle cap loosely fastened to avoid gas build-up (ie. Explosions!) from the fermentation process.

When you’ve finished adding and dissolving the ingredients, write the date on the bottle. It will take two weeks for the ingredients to ferment (or three months if you leave out the yeast).

When the cleaner is ready, start by straining the liquid enzyme cleaner into a bowl and set it aside for later. After straining, take the pulpy stuff left over, throw it in the Blendtec, and pulse until it’s nice and slushy (you could also use a food processor) to make your cleaning scrub.
Citrus Enzyme cleaner
Next add some baking soda and continue to pulse the Blendtec until it forms a nice, thick paste. I ended up adding about 1 1/2 cups of baking soda total, but that amount will depend on how much slush you have in the first place. Just add about a half cup at a time until it’s a good consistency. Then put the concoction in a lidded container and start cleaning!

  • to clean vegetables and fruits (1 part enzyme to 10 parts water)
  • clear blockages in kitchen sinks and drains (use undiluted)
  • as a natural insect repellent for ants and cockroaches (use undiluted)
  • for mopping floors (1 part enzyme to 20 parts water)
  • as fertilizer for plants (use 1 part enzyme to 20 parts water, or use the leftover mop water)
  • as a skincare product, e.g. facial cleanser or toner (1 part enzyme to 2 parts water)
  • wash cars – cars will look as if they have just been polished! (1 part enzyme to 20 parts water)
  • to clean a dirty kitchen sink (enzyme scrub)
  • clean the oven (enzyme scrub)

Yeast Pick Up the Sweet Slack

The holiday season can be a time of excess, but low- or no-calorie sweeteners could help merry-makers stay trim. Stevia is a zero-calorie sweetener that is sometimes called “natural” because it is extracted from the leaves of a South American plant. Now, a report describes a way to prepare large quantities of stevia using yeast, which would cut out the plant middleman and could lead to a better tasting product.

In the stevia plant, a series of enzymes turn glucose into molecules called glucosides that retain sugary sweetness without the calories. The plant produces a variety of glucosides, but some have a bitter aftertaste. Others are minor glucosides in the plant, but because of their pleasant properties, they could be developed into next-generation sweeteners. So, to make a sweeter sweetener and to make lots of it, researchers wanted to take the glucoside-making machinery out of the plant and into yeast, where they could more easily tweak enzymes to optimize stevia production.

The researchers created a platform for testing enzyme combinations to see which mixture produced the highest yield of stevia molecules in yeast. They started with the enzymes from the stevia plant, but also used some related enzymes from a plant in the mustard family, which improved yield. The authors say that their results represent a step toward the commercial production of a new generation of better-tasting no-calorie sweeteners.

Foods You Should Avoid On Empty Stomach

From our early memories, we would have been drilled down with the importance of food and the benefits of eating certain foods. We naturally tend to assume that foods make us grow and sometimes we end up gobbling tons of food with a childhood innocence that they are going to make us taller and smarter in a jiffy. Looking back, we tend to smile at those memories nostalgically. However, in some cases, we grow up or we simply ignore one basic rule of eating the right food at the right time.

Foods are very much related to time and the physics of our body. We can get benefits from them only if they are taken for a certain period. For instance, there are some foods that are beneficial to us but can actually work in a negative way, if taken at a wrong time. For example, there are some foods that should never be taken on an empty stomach. Here are some such foods that you may want to know:
  1. Tomatoes: Tomatoes are no doubt full of vitamins and antioxidants. However, when eaten on an empty stomach, these ingredients combine with acidic nature of our stomach and can result in stomach block. They put unnecessary pressure on the stomach and can cause stomach ache. This can be dangerous for people who are already suffering from ulcers.
  2. Citrus Fruits: Though citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruits are high in vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants, they may irritate your stomach when taken first thing in the morning. The oesophagus lining of your stomach gets enlarged when there is no food to digest and taking these fruits can directly enlarge them even more, causing more friction to your stomach.
  3. Short Crust/Puff Pastry: Pastries can be a good combination for breakfast but it is a strict no on an empty stomach. Pastries and crusts have yeast in them and they simply will not go well for an empty stomach.
  4. Carbonated Drinks: Carbonated drinks are basically bad for health and imagine having them on an early morning. Nothing can be more troublesome for your stomach than having these carbonated drinks first thing in the morning. They increase the risk of cancer and heart diseases and can also lead to many other complications. Strictly avoid them on an empty stomach.
  5. Coffee or Tea: Is having coffee the first thing that you do in the morning? You may be unaware but you are actually causing a lot of harm to your body. Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can increase the levels of hydrochloric acid and can lead to constipation, vomiting. They also slow the digestion process. Try having a glass of water on an empty stomach; give it some time to settle and then take caffeine.
  6. Pears:  The roughage in pears can cause gastric upset and damage gastrointestinal tissues.
  7.  Spices :Spicy foods eaten alone are too harsh on the digestive system. Spices trigger the release of gastric acid, which further creates the possibility of developing gastric disorders.
  8. Sweets :While sweets initially provide a fast energy boost, blood sugar levels quickly fall, which leads to fatigue and irritability. The foods also do not contain healthy nutrients to sustain energy levels or offer other health benefits. Eating sweets, increases insulin levels, which in turn increases the load on the pancreas, which has just woken up and it can lead to diabetes !

9.Bananas: Although rich in magnesium, eating bananas on an empty stomach elevates blood levels of the mineral, which could alter cardiac health and performance.

    10. Yeasty Foods : Breads, pastries and other foodstuffs made with yeast increase the body’s natural yeast content. In abundance, elevated yeast levels lead to a variety of problems from oral and gastric infections to skin eruptions.

11.Green Vegetables : While a good source of amino acids, minerals and vitamins, the roughage contained within the produce leads to abdominal discomfort in the form of heartburn and excess gas.

12.Fermented Milk Products :Yogurt and other cultured or fermented dairy products provide a wealth of probiotics. However, when consumed on an empty stomach, the hydrochloric acid content quickly destroys the healthy bacteria, which negates any benefit. So, such foods don't give you any health benefits on empty stomach.

    13. Cucumber: Raw vegetables are a rich source of amino acids. However, they can cause heartburn, flatulence and abdominal pain, especially when consumed on empty stomach.

These are some of the edibles you should ignore  eating on empty stomach as it will only turn their benefits into adverse effects.

In my next post, you can read the foods that can be eaten on empty stomach and their goodness !

How to Prevent & Treat Scalp Acne

Acne is less commonly found on the scalp than on certain other areas of the body, however, it can be just as much of a nightmare. Read on to discover the causes behind scalp acne, as well as how to prevent and treat it.

The Causes of Scalp AcneScalp Acne
Scalp acne typically appears as small zits or pimples on the scalp, as well as on the back of the head, both of which can be sore and itchy. Like most kinds of pimples, the ones found on your scalp form after hair follicles or pores get clogged with sebum or dead skin cells. It is also possible for acne to appear after mites, yeast or bacteria have gotten into your pores, causing a reaction.

The most common acne-causing factors include:
• a buildup of products, such as hair gels, leave-in treatments, or hairspray
• oil or dead skin cells clogging your follicles
• not washing your hear after sweating a lot
• not taking the time to wash your hair thoroughly
• sweating while wearing hats or head coverings

The main germs that can cause severe scalp acne include:
• Cutibacterium
• Staphylococcus epidermidids
• Demodex folliculorum
• Staphylococcus aureus
• Propionibacterium acnes
• Yeasts from the Malassezia family

Types of Scalp Spots
When spots appear on your scalp, they could appear for quite a number of reasons. Here are some of the most common ones:
Scalp folliculitis - this is a condition where bacteria causes your hair follicles to become inflamed and infected, resulting in the appearance of very itchy, small, red bumps.
Seborrheic dermatitis - this is a condition which causes dandruff and can leave the scalp looking red and scaly, which can leave marks that look like pimples if you pick at them.
Pilar cysts - these are hard bumps that are full of keratin, which form beside the hair root. These bumps do not usually have a white head, unlike scalp acne.
How to Prevent Scalp Acne
Having a clean scalp goes a long way towards preventing the appearance of scalp acne. Therefore, the best way to prevent scalp acne is to wash your hair after every workout and whenever it feels oily.
Further ways to reduce the chances of scalp acne appearing are:
• getting enough vitamin A, D, and E, to keep the skin healthy
• wearing loosely-fitting headgear
• switching to natural, hypoallergenic hair care products
• avoiding using too many different hair products
• watching your diet to see what kinds of foods cause flare-ups
How to Treat Scalp Acne
Doctors usually recommend medicated or scalp treatment shampoo to treat scalp acne since they will remove any dirt or excess oil while preventing future buildups from occurring.
Many natural shampoos for scalp acne can be found online, and the most common ingredients they use include:
• tea tree oil
• glycolic acid
• salicylic acid
• ketoconazole
• ciclopirox
• benzoyl peroxide
For more severe cases of scalp acne, your doctor may need to prescribe some of the following treatments:
• steroid injections
• oral antibiotics
• topical antibiotic ointments or steroid creams
• antihistamines
• stronger acne medication, such as isotretinoin
• phototherapy sessions

What You Can & Can't Eat on an Empty Stomach

Did you know that there are certain kinds of food which should never be ideally consumed on an empty stomach, since they may cause a number of ill effects?
Foods to Avoid on an Empty Stomach
1. Spices
Eating spicy food on an empty stomach can be very harsh on your digestive system. This is because spices trigger the release of gastric acid, which may result in you developing a number of nasty gastric disorders.
2. Bananas
Despite being rich in magnesium, eating bananas on an empty stomach could end up elevating this mineral's blood levels, which could have a negative effect on your heart health.
3. Citrus Fruits
Citrus fruits contain a lot of citric acids, and this may damage your mucous membranes, leading to gastritis and heartburn when consumed alone.
4. Food Containing Yeast
Pastries, bread, and other types of food made with yeast can end up increasing your body’s natural yeast content when eaten on an empty stomach. When your yeast levels get too high, you may end up suffering from gastric or oral infections, as well as unsightly skin eruptions.
5. Green Veggies
Eating green vegetables on an empty stomach may end up causing excess gas or heartburn due to the great amount of roughage they contain.
6. Tomatoes
Tomatoes contain large amounts of tannic acid, which end up further acid production in the digestive tract. High levels of acid there can end up leading to a number of gastric disorders.
7. Cold Carbonated Drinks
The carbonation that soft drinks contain could be harmful to your body's delicate mucosa. Additionally, cold drinks tend to slow your blood circulation, which could result in indigestion.
8. Yogurt
While yogurt typically contains plenty of healthy probiotics, when taken on an empty stomach most of their benefits are negated, due to the healthy bacteria being destroyed by your stomach acid.
Foods to Eat on an Empty Stomach
1. Oatmeal
Oatmeal contains a brilliant mixture of fiber, essential minerals, and slow-burning carbohydrates. Together, they may help lower levels of bad cholesterol, as well as helping in blood pressure regulation.
2. Honey
Apart from being rich in minerals, amino acids, and B vitamins, honey's texture, consistency, and antimicrobial elements boost the immune system, prevent gastrointestinal diseases, and even reduce the symptoms of upper respiratory problems.
3. Eggs
Eggs are complete proteins which are full of beneficial minerals and can be safely consumed at any time in the day. These minerals have the ability to give your memory a boost, aid in brain development, and even prevent eye-related diseases.
4. Nuts
Nuts are a natural source of protein which are also rich in vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and even antioxidants. Consuming just a handful of nuts will also help you keep hunger pangs at bay.
5. Watermelon
This delicious fruit balances out your electrolyte and fluid levels, while also supplying your body with plenty of powerful vitamins. Watermelon contains antioxidants called flavonoids, which protect the tissues and organs from the effects of infections and aging.
6. Whole-Grain Bread
Entirely yeast-free, this type of bread is a fantastic source of magnesium, iron, and selenium, which boost the immune system and prevent anemia. The fiber it contains will help maintain your gastrointestinal regularity, while also regulating cholesterol levels, and keeping hunger pangs at bay.
7. Blueberries
These wonderful berries are full of vitamins A, C, and E, as well as antioxidants, which can prevent the development of cancers, aging, and degenerative diseases.
8. Buckwheat
Buckwheat is an invaluable source of iron, B vitamins, fiber, protein, and minerals. These fibrous seeds not only help regulate your cholesterol levels but may also keep your digestive system properly functioning.
