Various Ways to Prevent Waking Up With Numb Hands

I can’t count the number of times I have woken up in the night with an intense sensation of numbness in my hands and wrist, that steadily develops into painful pins and needles. It’s only after the whole ordeal has subsided that I can turn around and go back to sleep.
As it turns out, this numbness can also be a sign of Carpal Tunnel syndrome, which can put a lot of pressure on the nerves in your wrist and hands and steadily become a more serious condition if untreated. It can be caused by excessive motion of the hands, like constant writing or typing at a laptop. It can also occur as a result of existing conditions like obesity, diabetes and even pregnancy, which tend to put pressure on nerves.
The good news is there are ways to taking care of your hands, and consequently yourself, before Carpal Tunnel Syndrome arises. These tips should help you to avoid that late-night run with hand numbness.

1. Keep Stretching

The best way to keep your wrists and hands healthy is with regular movement. Keep stretching your fingers and rotating your wrists. This keeps all the muscles and tendons surrounding the bones in your hands stay loose and agile. It also helps to avoid build-up of pressure on those nerves.

2. Don’t Sleep on your Hands

An extremely bad habit that many of us pick up is using our hands as pillows, even when we have four pillows on the bed with us. Maybe its just something about the way it cradles my head so perfectly. However, this is actually a major cause of the numbness, and can put pressure on your wrists, making them weak. Make sure to try alternate sleeping positions that don’t put pressure on your hands.

3. Turn the Computer Off

If you have a job that makes you sit at a computer all day, or if you, like me, just have a tendency to get hooked onto the inflow of information that the internet provides, give yourself designated no-computer times. This can help you to avoid putting excessive amounts of pressure on your wrists.

4. Keep your wrists straight

If you absolutely must spend endless hours in front of a computer, it’s advisable to keep your wrist and hands straight while you type or use the mouse. Overextending your wrists, or bending them downwards, so you can rest them on the system or the desk, can be a major risk factor for Carpal Tunnel syndrome, according to a study published in a major journal.

5. Try out a Wrist Splint

Consider this as the last of the last resorts. If you’ve been suffering from this numbness consistently every night for an extended period of time, after making all efforts not to sleep on your hands, doing stretches and keeping your hands straight, it might be time to try a medical solution. The most viable one is a wrist splint, which is available over the counter in most pharmacies. These are especially helpful for keeping your hands healthy while doing aggressively hand-based activities like writing, typing and even some sports.

6. I found a simple way to overcome numbness in a matter of seconds !
I read about it, then I tried, it worked, also told my friends who complained of numbness in hands or legs, they said that it worked.
Just slowly shake your head from side to side a couple of times, what happens is the blocked blood flow to the particular part of the body starts flowing with this simple movement of shaking head from side to side! Isn't that like magic ! yes, it is, try it, let me know, once you get relief.

First Aid Facts You Need to Know

Quite often we meet with some injuries or someone known to us suffer from injuries. While some injuries do merit an immediate ambulance ride, there are countless others that can be helped with a few simple precautions taken before the professionals arrive. Even if you went through some first aid training in your younger years, chances are that you're probably in need of a refresher. Rediscover these 10 basic first aid skills:

1. Relax a muscle cramp
If you've ever experienced a muscle cramp, you know just how painful they can be. The best way to resolve the issue is to gently massage and stretch the affected muscle group, rest and drink water, or ideally, an electrolyte-filled sports drink to calm your muscles.
2. Be extra cautious about spinal injuries
With any first aid injury that involves a head or neck injury, be extra wary of moving the victim. Especially if you did not witness the injury, or you are not sure if a spinal injury has occurred, assume that it did and encourage the person to stay as still as possible until medical professionals arrive, stabilizing the head and neck if necessary.

3. Treat a sprain
If you've fallen or injured yourself during a sports activity, you may end up with a swollen sprained ankle or wrist. If this occurred for you, follow the RICE method: Rest (sitting down and not exerting yourself), Ice (apply an ice pack to your injury for 15 to 20 minutes at a time), Compression (using an elastic bandage to reduce swelling, but not wrapping it too tightly) and Elevation (keeping it lifted above your heart, particularly at night). This should be enough to help you recover. If not, seek medical treatment.
4. Heal a bruise
If a blow or some kind of impact causes blood vessels to burst near the skin's surface, it can look unsightly and hurt badly. More often than not, leaving it alone to heal is sufficient, but if you're looking to speed up the healing process, follow the same strategy as above, using the RICE method. If the bruising persists, consult a doctor.
5. Splint a broken bone
If a more serious injury occurs, like breaking an arm or leg, stop the bleeding and reduce the swelling using ice, and call for medical assistance as soon as possible. You should also find a way to immobilize the injured appendage using a makeshift splint. To do this, simply roll up newspaper, or use a ruler or solid branch, and attach it to the arm or leg using tape or rope. The goal is to hold the appendage in place to avoid any further pain or damage.
6. Deal with a larger object stuck in the eye
If you've been struck by an object with rough edges, or one that contains chemicals, makes it hard to close your eye, or which remains stuck after taking those basic first aid steps, then be sure to seek medical treatment. Bandage the eye with a clean gauze and restrict movement. If the object is in another person's eye, cover their uninjured eye as well to prevent the affected eye from moving before you head to the doctor. If there's a large object in the eye, cover it with a paper cup to keep it from moving and get to the hospital.
7. Treat shock
Shock creates a sudden drop in blood flow through the body which can result from blood loss, trauma, poisoning, severe burns, or a wide range of other injuries or ailments, and is generally accompanied with symptoms such as rapid breathing or a racing pulse. If someone is suffering from shock, elevate their legs and feet slightly, loosening tight clothing and checking for any bleeding or other more serious injuries.
8. Deal with a severe cut
A little cut that requires a band-aid is no big deal. But when you get a more serious wound, you need to go through a couple of steps. Firstly, rinse the wound and apply pressure using a sterile gauze or clean cloth. If the blood soaks through, then apply another bandage on top of the first one. Raise the injured part of the body to slow the bleeding and continue to apply pressure until the bleeding stops.
9. Relieve heat exhaustion
If you have been hiking for several hours in the sun and suddenly start feeling faint or ill, you could be suffering from heat exhaustion. The best solution would be to rest in a cool place, ideally, an air-conditioned building, with your legs elevated higher than your heart. Be sure to drink cool fluids, loosen any tight clothing and take a cold shower. If that doesn't work, seek medical attention.
10. Handle heatstroke
If someone's body overheats, they may get hit by heatstroke, which may cause all kinds of nasty side effects, including nausea and vomiting, fast breathing and an altered mental state. Those suffering from heat exhaustion should be moved to a cool place and immersed in cool water, a cold or even icy bath should be helpful, or pack them in a cooling blanket until medical professionals can be reached.
11. Refresh your first aid kit
You hopefully have a first aid kit around the house with a handful of bandages and ointments. If you have one be sure that you've got all the items recommended by the American Red Cross, including tweezers, an instant cold compress, and non-latex gloves.
12. Deal with dehydration
Dehydration tends to be very common, but it is often misunderstood. Dehydration is caused by not replacing both the water and salt that make up a sizable amount of our bodies. It can cause a wide range of symptoms, from headaches to muscle cramps, to dark-colored urine. Rehydrating is an immediate way to help counter the effects of dehydration, but also consider having a sports drink to help replenish electrolytes. Letting dehydration persist for too long can cause you to break out in a fever, or develop a rapid heartbeat or low blood pressure, in which case you should seek medical attention.

What To Do About Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

If you ever experienced numbness in your hands and fingers as you fell asleep it might be an early sign of carpal tunnel syndrome, which affects a lot of people around the world. If ignored it can cause long-term damage, so it's really important to take preventive measures against it. Here are six effective ways to treat numbness in hands, which we recommend you give a try as soon as you experience the early signs of carpal tunnel syndrome. But first, let's take a look at what carpal tunnel syndrome is. Carpal tunnel syndrome is also known as a median nerve compression. The first symptoms that occur are numbness and tingling in the hands and wrists at night. As the condition progresses, the symptoms may worsen during the day. Furthermore, carpal tunnel syndrome is more common among women than men and is more likely to affect middle-aged people. Here's what you can do about it:
1. Take frequent breaks
Carpal tunnel symptoms are especially evident among people whose jobs require a lot of repetitive motion in their hands and wrists. Your hands need regular breaks between working sessions, so be sure to set a reminder every two to three hours and do a little exercise.

2. Keep wrists straight while working
There is a positive association between wrist posture and carpal tunnel syndrome, studies show. Adjust your chair so that your forearms are level with your keyboard and try to keep your wrists in a neutral position without bending them.

3. Consider wearing a wrist splint
Wearing a splint will hold your wrist in a neutral position. It is especially important to wear one if you do a lot of typing or while sleeping at night, so wearing a wrist splint can make a significant difference.
4. Do wrist exercises
Focus on exercises that will stretch the muscles surrounding the wrists to help ensure that the tendons that pass through the carpal tunnel stay in good shape. Include a variety of stretches, bending, and flexing your wrists when doing these exercises.
5. Use correct posture
Using correct posture while working is important for more than just your back. If you succumb to poor posture on a regular basis, your shoulder nerves tend to be compressed, which ultimately affects your wrists and hands. Make sure that you sit with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor.
6. Ice your wrists
Ice will help relieve the pain in your wrists and hands. So ice your wrist or soak it in an ice bath for 5 to 10 minutes. While it won't prevent carpal tunnel syndrome, it will alleviate the pain that it causes.
