Amla or Indian gooseberry- the best Ayurvedic medicine to control high blood sugar at home

Many people living with diabetes are now turning to complementary and alternative medicine, including Ayurvedic medications, to control their blood sugar and avoid complications that may be caused by this condition. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of healing, has evolved over the years and is now widely for treating a number of health problems. Amla, or Indian gooseberry  is a powerful herb extensively used in Ayurvedic preparations to treat several chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes in Ayurveda.

A traditional part of Indian medicine, amla is generally recommended by practitioners as a general health tonic. It is claimed that regular consumption of the berry can help boost the immune system, detoxify the body, and slow down ageing, mainly due to its high antioxidant content. What’s even more, amla is low in calories yet high in vitamin C, which is essential for repairing of pancreatic tissues and weight reduction - an added bonus for diabetics. According to Ayurveda, eating the fruit on a daily basis can help normalise metabolism and check the accumulation of fat, which aids in weight loss.

Amla (Indian gooseberry) for diabetes: How does it work?

Research studies have brought to light the potential anti-diabetic effects of amla. One study using amla extracts on diabetic animals showed that the berry can cause blood glucose to drop. Also, another study on diabetic rats suggested that amla juice may help treat certain health problems common in people with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Furthermore, a 2011 study found that people - with or without diabetes - who took amla fruit powder developed a significant decrease in both fasting and post-prandial blood glucose levels, indicating that the Indian gooseberry may effectively help in managing diabetes. The Indian gooseberry also contains chromium that regulates carbohydrate metabolism and may make the body more responsive to insulin, which in turn helps to keep blood sugar at a healthy range.

The University of Maryland Medical Center suggested that amla is also an effective traditional remedy to prevent pancreatitis.

How to use Amla (Indian gooseberry) to control blood sugar and diabetes

One of the best ways to use the Indian gooseberry in managing your blood sugar is to consume one raw amla once in a day. If you find the taste too sour, try sipping a glass of water right after eating the fruit to give you a sweet aftertaste.

Another way is to dry the amla pulp, grind it into a fine powder and incorporate it into your diabetes diet. You can mix the amla powder with water or fresh lime juice, or even sprinkle it on fruits like papaya to get a tart flavour.

To make amla juice, just remove the seed, crush the pulp and extract the juice. Try to consume the juice about 5-10 ml daily to control high blood sugar and help you maintain a healthy weight. However, make sure that you do not use processed forms of amla, especially those that have added sugar because they can affect your blood sugar levels.

Good friends circle in old age may boost brain functioning

Maintaining strong social networks with positive, warm and trusting friendships in old age might be key to slowing down age-related decline in memory and brain functioning, researchers say.

The findings showed that superagers — who are 80 years and older — who have cognitive ability at least as good as people in their 50s or 60s can have more satisfying, high-quality relationships compared to their cognitively average, same-age peers.

“This study supports the theory that maintaining strong social networks seems to be linked to slower cognitive decline,” said an Associate Professor.

“The study is particularly exciting as a step toward understanding what factors underlie the preservation of cognitive ability in advanced age, particularly those that may be modifiable,” added another.

Previous studies has shown psychological well-being in older age to be associated with reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s, dementia.

“It’s not as simple as saying if you have a strong social network, you’ll never get Alzheimer’s disease,” he said.

“But if there is a list of healthy choices one can make, such as eating a certain diet and not smoking, maintaining strong social networks may be an important one on that list,” he noted.

For the study, the participants answered a 42-item questionnaire, which is a widely used to measure of psychological well-being.

The scale examines six aspects of psychological well-being: autonomy, positive relations with others, environmental mastery, personal growth, purpose in life and self-acceptance.

Superagers scored a median overall score of 40 in positive relations with others while the control group scored 36 — a significant difference, he said.

HUGGING IS BENEFICIAL TO HEALTH

One of the best things you can do for your health, your emotions, and your relationships is to offer and receive a simple, loving hug. It's so sad that many may be missing out on the great spiritual and health benefits that can be attained from this most basic of human gestures.
1) A hug can strengthen your immune system. The therapeutic effect from hug, helps us to stave off disease.
2) Hugs make us forget about food and help us to stay slim, as we often eat to combat loneliness. With a hug, we forget about food and think more about the warmth we got.
3)Hug reduce the level of stress one feels and also limit inflammatory processes. Because of this, our body's natural ageing mechanism slows down.
4) Hugs keeps us agile and boosts our vitality. A warm hug recharges our batteries, as it does wonder for our moods, makes us feel perfect and energetic to face the day ahead.
5)A warm hug can help us through trouble times. The extra positivity and warmth one feels because of the warm hug inspires and gives confidence to face difficult times.
6) Hugs makes us feel much happier. When we embrace someone, our body secretes a hormone called oxytocin. This hormone gives you a sense of joy and comfort. Hugs also cements the bond between you and your loves ones.
7) A hug can keep depression at bay in 2 ways. First they suppress cortisol, which is the human stress hormone. Second, they increase the production of serotonin, the mood enhancing hormone.
8) Hugs can soothe and calm your nervous system. When we hug another both feel our nerves being relaxed. This can reduce and even eliminate stress and tension.
9) Hug can raise your self-esteem. Hug gives us a sense of safety and security, equipping us to face the day ahead boldly. You'll be less likely to fall prey to insecurities and fears through it as a result.
10) With hugs we say things that words can't. Language barriers don't exist when it comes to a hug. Its meaning is universal- love, care and support. Everyone loves being hugged, isn't it?
