8 Methods Companies Use To Hide Sugar In Foods

It’s no secret that eating too much added sugar can harm your health in a variety of ways, with excess sugar consumption being linked to a variety of conditions like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. But even if you use little to no added sugar in your cooking, you might be consuming way more of it than the recommended daily amount. How is that possible? One major reason why that might be happening is that companies add a lot of sugar to their products, but they try to conceal it in a variety of ways to be able to pass them off as healthy foods.
And while the maximum daily amount of added sugar for men should be no more than 37.5 grams (9 teaspoons) and for women it should not exceed 25 grams (6 teaspoons), 1 protein bar can contain as much as 30 grams (7.5 teaspoons) of added sugars, which is over the daily recommended allowance for women. Let’s investigate how it is possible for companies to sell you junk food under the premise of healthy food, and how you can use food labels to make smart purchasing decisions that would promote and not harm your health.

1. They Use a Different Word For Sugar

When you want to find out how much sugar a product contains, let’s say, a box of cereal, you usually look at the back of a cereal box and scan the ingredients list for key words like sugar, sucrose, glucose, and fructose. If you don’t find those, or find them in the middle or at the end of the ingredients list, which means that there isn’t a lot of it in the product, you make the conclusion that it’s a healthy choice, right?
Well, not entirely, as many companies nowadays use many “alternative” names for sugar in an attempt to deceive a consumer that is used to scan the ingredients list before purchasing a certain product. Here is a list of such alternative names that you should watch out for when it comes to powdered added sugar.

Added sugar is also often used in syrup form rather than powdered form, in which case they commonly appear as the following ingredients on nutrition labels.

2. Adding Sugar to Things That Aren’t Sweet

You would expect to see added sugar appearing as an ingredient on a box of cookies, but not so much on a can of tomato sauce, salad dressings and soups. The truth is that humans simply love sweet food because our brains run on sugar and it’s addictive, and for companies, it’s a cheap way of making a product tastier for consumers.
Unfortunately, all of the foods we mentioned above can actually contain a lot of sugar, which add up and can be the culprit behind excess sugar consumption. For example, 100 grams of some ketchup can contain as much as 38 grams of sugar, which is higher than the daily allowance for men. That’s why it is always important to always check the sugar content of a product, be it sweet or savory.

3. Adding Health-Related Claims on Product Packaging

You’re better off completely ignoring claims like natural, zero, healthy, low-fat, diet, and light that often appear on the packaging of products. Instead, look directly at the label and analyze the ingredient list. These products are often lower in fat, calories, and sugar, but they’re often way too abundant in sugars.

4. Using So-Called “Healthy” Sugars

Certain products use labels like refined sugar-free or contains no refined sugar. What these labels mean, however, is that a product doesn't contain white sugar. While it may be true that these so-called “healthy” sugars have a slightly lower glycemic index (GI), they still have little to no additional nutrients compared to whole foods and, at the end of the day, they are still added sugars. A list of popular sugars marketed as healthier can be found in the picture below.
sugar marketing healthy
The bottom line is that like white sugar, fructose or corn syrup, these sugars should not exceed the overall amount of 37.5 g for men and 25 g for women. So, it doesn’t matter if you consume 25 g of white sugar, or 10 g of coconut sugar, 10 g of agave syrup and 5 g of honey as a woman, both equal your daily recommended amount. That doesn’t mean that you cannot choose these alternatives, but remember that they are just as damaging to your health as any other sugar.

5. Using a Few Types of Sugar

As we mentioned previously, ingredients appear in any ingredients list according to their amounts in a product, so the first ingredient is usually the most abundant one, whereas there will be very little of the last ingredient on the list. Companies learnt to take advantage of this regulation and often uses several types of sugar in smaller amounts, which makes them appear lower on the ingredients list.
This can trick a consumer into believing that there is very little sugar in the product. So, if you see a few different types of sugar in the middle or at the end of the list, know that the added amount of all these sugars may be way higher than you expect. For example, if you look at the picture below, you will see that this cereal uses a variety of sweeteners, such as sugar, honey, and brown sugar syrup that appear in different places on the list.

6. Not Distinguishing Between Naturally-Occurring and Added Sugars

There is a difference between eating an orange and drinking a glass of soda, even if both of these products contain a lot of sugar. While products containing added sugars, like a glass of soda, do not contain anything apart from whatever is listed on the packaging, whole foods are packed full with fiber, vitamins, antioxidants and essential nutrients that not only mitigate the damage caused by the sugar they contain, but improve your health. Ingredient labels don’t distinguish between the added and naturally-occurring sugars, but you should keep in mind that choosing whole, unprocessed foods is always better.

7. Changing the Nutritional Facts With Time

If you know that a specific brand makes a great low-sugar product, don’t assume it applies to comparable products by the same brand. It is often the case that a similar product, but with a different flavor or simply one that is sold in a different country will not have the same nutritional content the original did.
It is also often the case that brands change the content of their products when they update the packaging, so always be critical of any changes or variations in the product you know is good, as it may actually turn out to be not so low in sugar.

8. Check the Serving Size

The last, but definitely crucial line in the nutrition facts portion of a product is the serving size. Food companies often manipulate the serving size of a product, making it too small to be realistic, but this makes the product look like it’s not that high in sugar. So, for example 1 small can of soda that even a child can gulp down in a matter of seconds often contains multiple servings, which means that by drinking the whole thing you’re actually consuming double or triple the amount of sugar mentioned on the packaging. Be careful and make smart food purchases.

12 Ways to Rid Your Body of Toxins

While you may think that you're healthy, you may not feel vibrant. You probably also struggle to find the energy to get through the day. You feel irritable, your stomach isn't right and you are suffering from headaches. While these types of ailments affect many of us in our daily life, they are usually not serious enough to warrant a trip to the doctor. A major cause of these ailments simply come down to be surrounded by too many toxins. Thankfully, there is a solution to this issue. Here are 12 ways to rid your body of toxins:

1. Red Wine
While this may sound counterproductive, if you drink good quality red wine in moderation, it can improve your digestion, your blood flow, lower your cholesterol and make your heart healthier.

2. Activated Charcoal
As activated charcoal doesn't contain any oxygen, it can remove a lot of metals, toxins, and poisons from the blood. Best to take it before you eat or drink. It can also be used to whiten your teeth.
3. Drink Water
Drinking water helps organs function better and also flushes toxins from the body. It can prevent illnesses and a number of health problems. It can also make the skin look better and even give you more energy.
4. Avoid refined sugars
Refined sugars cause too much glucose to build up in the body. So, instead, switch to healthier ones, like brown sugar, maple syrup and other natural sweeteners. In case you're wondering how your body has too much sugar, a clear indication is that you will crave sweets.

5. Eat organic
Fruits and vegetables are sprayed with pesticides and other chemicals to keep bugs and pests from eating them. Washing them doesn't always remove them and may cause serious health problems. A better option would be to opt for organic produce.

6. Avoid toxins
Many cleaning products contain chemicals. When you spray them in the air or on surfaces you breathe them in which can cause lung problems and allergies as well as sinus infections. Best opt for cleaning products that use natural ingredients and that are nontoxic.

7. Drink green tea
While coffee may be your go to in the morning, coffee contains ingredients that can cause high cholesterol. To avoid this, switch to herbal or green tea, a healthier option.
8. Fast
While fasting for a long period of time, or too often may not be healthy, doing it from time to time can help cleanse the body, making it healthier. Fasting removes refined sugars and other toxins from your body. Your blood flows better and your organs function better too.

9. Visit the sauna
At the sauna you sweat, which removes the body of toxins as well as other things you have built up inside. So make it a point to go to the spa regularly or exercise to sweat even more. Just be sure to replace the liquid you have lost by drinking plenty of water.
10. Take probiotics
If your digestive tract is not functioning properly, your body will be unable to cleanse itself. Try using probiotics to help break down waste and get your digestive tract working properly. Probiotics can come in pill form, or you may eat foods which contain them naturally.

11. Detox
Detoxing, as the name implies, helps flux bad toxins out of the body. You can take a detox shake, pill or focus on a diet that promotes detoxification.

12. Sleep
Sleeping is important as it gives the body a chance to rest and can help build up your immune system and also affect how your body digests food. Be sure to get a good night's sleep every night and you will feel better mentally and physically.

Avoid These Foods if You Have Joint Pain

Joint pain is a common health problem that can often cause discomfort and inflammation or soreness in any of the joints in the body. It can either be acute or chronic and can vary in severity. Arthritis and gout tend to be two main causes of joint pain. But it can also result from muscle strains, broken or dislocated bones, bursitis, fibromyalgia, leukemia, and lupus.

Nevertheless, despite the setbacks that joint pain may cause in your everyday life, it can be managed with medication, exercise or natural medicine. Diet, too, plays a key role in managing your joint pain. It is recommended that you opt for anti-inflammatory foods like ginger, turmeric, and garlic to help fight the pain. It is also essential that if you suffer from joint pain, you avoid the following foods:

1. Processed and red meat
Processed and red meat contain chemicals such as nitrates and purines, both of which increase inflammation and pain in the body. Processed foods are also high in toxins. They contain AGEs - advanced glycation end products - causing inflammation.
A 2014 study published  noted that a red meat-derived glycan promotes the development of systematic inflammation and cancer progression. What's more, another study published, found a connection between red meat consumption and biomarkers of inflammation.
Alternative: Consume more vegetables and food rich in fiber.
2. Refined and artificial sugars
Consuming high amounts of sugar can also increase the level of AGEs in the body, causing inflammation. Sugar also triggers the release of inflammatory agents called cytokines in the body. Excess sugar intake also leads to weight gain, which puts more pressure on your joints and increases pain.
In a 2014 study published, it was found that regular consumption of soda increases the risk of rheumatoid arthritis in women, independent of other dietary and lifestyle factors. Avoid sweetened beverages, pre-sweetened cereals, fruit drinks, pastries, candy, and snacks.
Alternative: Opt for natural sweeteners like stevia or honey.
3. Dairy products
Dairy products may also contribute to joint pain. The high level of protein casein found in dairy products has been found to trigger inflammation and pain. A report found that this type of protein may also irritate the tissue around the joints.
Saturated fats in full-fat dairy products, like milk, butter, and cheese, have also been shown to trigger inflammation, causing pain in the joints. Avoid pasteurized dairy when suffering from joint pain or any other type of chronic pain.
Alternative: Opt for soy milk, almond milk, tofu, margarine and other non-dairy products.
4. Corn oil
Corn oil is high in omega-6 fatty acids, which may cause the body to produce pro-inflammatory chemicals. According to a study published in 2012, an increase in omega-6 fatty acid intake could potentiate inflammatory diseases. Rather than eliminating products high in omega-6 completely from your diet, consume products such as safflower, sunflower, grapeseed, soy and peanut oil, as well as mayonnaise, in moderation.
Alternative: While keeping the aforementioned products to a minimum, increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids which can be found in foods such as olive oil, nuts, flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds.
5. Refined grains and flour
Refined grains and flour contain high-glycemic index foods that trigger the production of AGEs, stimulating inflammation. According to a 2013 study published, consuming wheat products or cereal grains daily can cause chronic inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Such grains are also devoid of fiber and B vitamins. Consuming these products regularly can also increase the risk of degenerative diseases like cancer, coronary heart disease, and diabetes.
Alternative: Opt for whole-grain products or almond and coconut flour.
6. Eggs
Consuming eggs regularly can increase swelling and joint pain. Eggs, especially the yolks, contain arachidonic acid that leads to the production of prostaglandins, which can trigger inflammation in the body. Eggs also contain saturated fat which can contribute to both inflammation and pain.
Alternative: If you enjoy eating eggs for breakfast, skip the yolk from time to time and consume just the egg whites.
7. Whey Protein
Whey protein has also been found to cause inflammation and joint pain due to the gluten and casein content. Casein is a type of protein that can cause the production of uric acid in the body - too much of which can lead to pain and inflammation. Joint pain that arises from uric acid has been found to cause gout, which can be severe and cause lasting damage to the joints.

In addition, people who are sensitive to gluten can suffer from chronic inflammation and widespread pain. A study conducted in 2013 and published, notes that a gluten-free diet reduces inflammation and insulin resistance.
Alternative: Opt for healthy sources of lean protein such as beans, nuts, and seeds.
8. Refined salts
If you suffer from joint pain, refined salt is an ingredient you should avoid. Refined salts do not contain natural minerals such as phosphorous that your body requires to function properly. Limiting your refined salt intake may also reduce calcium loss from your bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

Alternative: Switch to sea salt or pink Himalayan salt and try to minimize cooking with salt. Watch out for processed foods that contain excessive salt and other preservatives to increase their shelf life.
9. Foods containing MSG (monosodium glutamate)
MSG is a flavor enhancing food additive with preservative properties that is most commonly found in packaged foods such as frozen snacks, frozen dinners, canned and frozen Chinese food, salad dressings and potato chips. MSG is an artificial additive that has been found to trigger inflammation and pain within the body. It is particularly harmful to people who already suffer from inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Alternative: Eat fresh, home-made foods and use organic products where necessary, avoiding artificial flavor enhancers.
10. Beer
Consuming alcoholic drinks and beer regularly is not ideal for your joints. Consuming beer regularly has been linked to an increased risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Beer is also high in purine, which the body converts to uric acid, causing inflammation. Beer also contains gluten which is best to avoid when you suffer from joint pain.

WHITE IN COLOUR IN FOODS AREN'T GOOD FOR HEALTH !

Forget getting nutrients from these items, you end up troubling your health by consuming these food items. White rice, pasteurized cow milk, refined salt and refined sugar are the 4 white poisons, which are not good for your health. As they don’t have the right amount of protein, vitamins or minerals to keep your body healthy. Moreover, they increase the risk of developing other diseases like hypertension and diabetes. It has also been found via research that eating white rice increases the risk of diabetes by 17 percent.

Here is why you should stop eating these poisons:

Pasteurized Cow Milk: The only good thing about this milk is that it has a longer life. The process of pasteurization keeps the milk good for a longer period, but harms its nutritive value. It removes enzymes, vitamin A, B 12 and C from the milk. The process also transfers hormones and antibiotics into the milk. Researchers have found that the process also destroys essential and good bacteria like lactobacillus acidophilus. Moreover, about 20% of iodine gets removed from the milk and thus after consuming it, you are more likely to develop constipation.

White or Refined Rice: The process of refining rice leads to the removal of the outer layer and germ from it. The rice is left with endosperm, only. This layer contains starch in a huge quantity which can increase your blood sugar or glucose levels to a great extent.

Refined Sugar: White sugar or refined one is full of chemicals. It has no nutritional value. The chemical is derived from sugar cane or beet. Then, the juice of this substance is extracted to get fibre free sugar. The juice is mixed with lime during the refining process. This kills all vitamins present in the juice. Calcium sulphate and sulphuric acid are also used for bleaching of the sugar. This is done to make the sugar look more white than natural.

Refined Salt: Normal table salt contains iodine. This is needed for a healthy body. But refining of salt removes iodine from the salt. Fluorides are added during the process of refining. The fluorides are bad when consumed in excess. Consumption of refined salt also increases blood pressure.
