For Kid's Coughs, Swap The Over-The-Counter Syrups For Honey

If you don't have little kids, or it's been a while, let me just break down for you why kids' coughs can be a truly miserable problem that can drive you to madness.

Imagine this: Your kid's coughing — it's almost always worse at night — then they start crying because they're tired and can't sleep with all the coughing. The coughing and crying means that not only do they not sleep, but you also don't sleep — no one in the house sleeps — and this can go on for weeks.

So what do you do? You might, logically, go to the drug store. When you get there, there might be dozens of bottles of cough syrup promising to help your kid's cough. You'll see labels with babies and crescent moons that promise to relieve "chest congestion" and help your kid sleep.

Pediatrician Jennifer Shu says don't buy it. Shu, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics, says the shelves of kids' cough medicine at the pharmacy are not really about good medicine — it's marketing.

"If you make it, some people are going to buy it," she says. "That's why you see lots of products on shelves that may not be necessary or even safe for kids."

Mostly, these kids cough syrups have either a cough suppressant like dextromethorphan (in Robitussin and Delsym, for example) or an antihistamine like diphenhydramine (in Benadryl and Dimetapp).

"What the studies have shown is that — for some reason — in kids they aren't that effective," she explains.

Plus, these drugs can cause side effects, she says, "such as increasing your blood pressure, making your heart rate go up or suppressing the drive to breathe — and that's definitely something we don't want for kids."

So what can desperate, sleep-starved parents give their kids? The answer might be already in the kitchen cupboard.

"Honey is at least as effective as those many, many products that you see in the drugstore," says Dr. Bud Wiedermann, an infectious disease specialist at Children's National Hospital in Washington D.C. This is only for kids older than 1 year old. (There's a risk of botulism for infants.)

There is some research to back up honey as a cough treatment. One randomized controlled trial in Israel asked parents of coughing kids to give their child either honey or a date syrup that looked and tasted like honey (a placebo), and found that the honey group said that the child's cough and sleep as improved after one night of honey, but parents who gave the date syrup found no improvement (note this study was partially funded by the Honey Board of Israel). Another study found honey worked about as well as dextromethorphan without the risks of side effects.

How does honey work to quiet a cough? Shu says, it's not clear.

"Honey has some natural antibacterial and antiviral properties," she says. "It contains hydrogen peroxide, so there is a theory that that's why it might help fight a cold. But also the thickness of it helps coat the throat and makes it feel more comfortable so you don't have that dry, ticklish feeling that's causing your cough."

Wiedermann says — prevention is important too. Even though we're halfway through flu seasons he says it's not too late to get the flu vaccine."Not just your children, but the whole family, because with the adults being immunized you lessen the likelihood that there'll be intense household exposure," he says. "Don't go to work if you're sick; don't go to school if you're sick — you're just spreading your virus to other people."

And, he says, whether you're trying to avoid getting sick or you've already got something: "Wash hands. Wash hands. Wash hands."

Besides honey, there are a few other tried and true home treatments for a stubborn kid's cough — make sure they're drinking lots of fluids, prop them up on a pillow, try using a humidifier or a menthol chest rub.

If your little one has a fever or labored breathing, Shu says, you might need to get medical attention. Otherwise, just buckle in and try to ride it out as best you can. She says kids can get an average of one cold a month in the winter — and each one can last two weeks — or longer.

So here's her final advice: "Patience young grasshopper," she laughs. "It'll feel like it's lasting forever, but it will go away."

Drink Banana Tea to Enjoy a Good Night's Sleep

There are nights when many cannot get myself to sleep. Try as you might, at 2 or 3 am I find myself wide awake, tossing and turning, unable to get any shuteye. While everyone experiences occasional restless nights, if you regularly find it hard to get back to sleep within 15 to 20 minutes, or if you wake up more than two to three times per night, your lack of sleep can disrupt your daily life, so it is worth addressing. While there are a number of natural remedies and herbs to help put you to sleep, here's another remedy you can try - in fact, I highly recommend it:

Banana Tea for Deep Sleep

This organic, banana-infused sleep remedy works wonders and it tastes great too. But, how does it work? Bananas, the peels, in particular, are loaded with potassium and magnesium - two vital nutrients that will help you sleep better. While magnesium will help prevent sleep disturbances, both nutrients work together to help relax the muscles.

Note: It is also important to use organic bananas because they are free of harmful pesticides. As this recipe requires you to heat the boiled peel, non-organic bananas should be avoided.

Here's how: Prepare in under 10 minutes and enjoy every night before bed:

Ingredients
• 1 organic banana
• 1 small pot of water
• Dash of cinnamon (optional)

Directions
1. Cut both ends off the banana, then place it, peel and all, into boiling water. Let the banana cook for around 10 minutes.
2. Use a colander to pour the banana water into a mug. If you like, you may sprinkle some cinnamon at this point. Drink the tea one hour before bedtime.
3. The leftover banana is pretty tasty too. Serve it on a plate and dig in - skin included. The texture is soft, gooey and very enjoyable.

How Sleep Deprivation Affects Your Body

When your body doesn't get enough sleep it suffers. A lack of sleep affects your mood and your short term memory. Processing simple things can become challenging and it also affects your emotional response. A lack of sleep has also been linked to serious health conditions. The Ted-Ed video below explains what would happen to your body if you didn't sleep:

Why Sleeping Pills Are Not a Safe Alternative

Almost half of Americans suffer from insomnia or inadequate sleep. Yet, while it may be tempting to resort to sleeping pills, they cannot address the root of the problem. Rather, sleeping pills provide a short term fix. Furthermore, those frequently prescribed Benzodiazepines, like Xanax and Valium, which are used to treat anxiety disorders by increasing drowsiness can, unfortunately, be worryingly addictive too. In addition, Barbiturates suppress the central nervous system and act very much like anesthetics and sedatives.

As with all drugs, there's a list of side effects that accompany sleeping pills. Besides being addictive, they can cause constipation, dizziness, a tendency to lose focus and memory, stomach pain, weakness, uncontrollable shaking and parasomnias (doing things without realizing).

Planning to switch to Stevia from sugar? Beware of its side-effects

Stevia leaves are 200 times sweeter than the regular processed sugar. It was being used to sweeten beverages since 16th century. As more countries like Japan and China are now growing stevia plant, its uses as a herbal supplement and sweeter has increased. Though, it’s now widely available, health experts argue to discuss its side effects. They believe that raw stevia leaves are not good for health and may pose some heath threats. It is being used a sweetener, certain studies link its usage with some side effects. Read on to know more.

Stevia may cause allergy: As it’s ragweed plant, it may cause some allergy to some people. People who are sensitive to ragweed may also be sensitive to stevia. It’s not possible to know about the allergy however, if you think you may be allergic to plants, avoid use.

Stevia may not be safe for pregnant and breast-feeling women: Though, it’s not confirmed how stevia can affect the health of expecting mother, but because of it’s derived from a plant, it may cause some allergy or inflammation. It’s always better to consult with your doctor if you are breast feeding or expecting a bay.

Stevia may increase the diabetes risk: There are some researches done which has contradictory results to its benefits. It may lower sugar level to an extent that may interfere with the sugar level control. If you are diabetic, consult with your doctor before switching to stevia.

Stevia may result in low blood pressure: Stevia is known to lower blood pressure. However, some experts believe that stevia’s prolonged use might result in drastic dip in blood pressure which could also lead to serious health problems. Try to limit the use for better health.

Stevia can affect kidneys: Stevia accelerates the process and rate at which body expels water out of body in the form of urine. As kidneys are responsible for this process, stevia consumption puts unnecessary pressure on kidneys leading to kidney issues. However, more information is required on this. Still it’s advisable to use it in limited amount.

No amount of alcohol safe during pregnancy

Teenagers who are exposed to alcohol while in the womb exhibit altered brain connections consistent with impaired cognitive performance, according to a study.
Researchers have taken one of the first major steps in finding the biological changes in the brain that drive foetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD).
The study, analysed brain signals to find the long-term effects.
“This work presents major evidence that children exposed to alcohol prenatally are at risk of suffering from impaired cognitive abilities and other secondary factors,” said a researcher.
“Our study shows that there is no safe amount or safe stages during pregnancy for alcohol consumption,” he said in a statement
The researchers measured the responses from a brain imaging technique called magnetoencephalography (MEG).
FASD is one of the leading causes of intellectual disability worldwide and is linked to a wide array of neurological issues, including ADHD, researchers said.
While the prevailing theory links expectant mothers’ alcohol consumption to cognitive impairments for children, questions about the extent of this effect remain, they said.
Despite the known link, researchers are uncertain about the precise mechanism by which alcohol alters the developing brain.
“The paper provides important integrative results for the field of FASD,” said a researcher.
These results may then indicate that simple sensory measures may provide sensitivity for brain deficits that affect the broader cognitive domain,” he said in a statement.
Previous attempts to study the brain circuitry in affected individuals have been hampered by the difficulty of drawing conclusions from complicated MEG data.
The researchers developed a sophisticated computer technique called Cortical Start Spatio-Temporal multidipole analysis that could identify which areas of the brain were active when research subjects were in the MEG machine.
After data from 19 FASD patients and 21 subjects without FASD was collected, the computational approach revealed several areas of the brain that showed impaired connectivity among the FASD group.
Subjects who were exposed to alcohol in the womb were more likely to have issues with connections through their corpus callosum, the band of brain tissue that connects the left and right halves of the brain.
Deficits in this area have been reported in people with schizophrenia, multiple sclerosis, autism, depression and abnormalities in sensation, researchers said.
