What is a watermelon diet? Here are the pros and cons

The only happy thing about summer is our favourite melons. Tasty, hydrating and nutritious – watermelons make for a perfect summer and weight loss snack. If you want to lose weight and watermelon is your favourite fruit, here is a piece of good news for you.

A lot of people are trying watermelon diet to lose weight and it is working for them. Should you try it too?

What is a watermelon diet?
There is not one but many versions of watermelon diet and the most famous sort is the cleanse watermelon diet. While following this version of the diet, dieters eat nothing but just watermelon during the first stage. This initial stage lasts for nearly three days. Because you are only eating watermelon, you can safely eat one large-size watermelon every day.

After this initial stage, many people go back to their normal diet while others add other foods gradually into their diet. For example, you might have two light meals a day and watermelon as a snack.

What do experts say?The diet is appealing to many people because it only involves short term commitment. And it’s easy for people to follow because watermelon is the favourite of many.
Watermelon is low in calories, provides you with essential vitamins, minerals and also has antioxidant, which gives it the red colour. The diet actually is a cleanse plan because watermelon is 90 per cent water.

Risks of dietAs the diet only involves eating watermelons, it leaves you deprived of any protein and fat, which are essential nutrients for a healthy living. People who have any health condition might face problems while following the diet. So do not forget to consult your doctor before you decide to follow the diet.
Once you stop the diet and go back to your old eating habits, you may gain all the lost fat back.

Watermelon diet and weight loss
The diet claims quick weight loss, but it is only for short-term like any other fad diet. When you consume watermelon, it helps curb hunger by reducing your appetite. Also, the chewing and swallowing process gives you a filling effect.

Who must not follow the diet?No one should overdo the diet as it may have negative health effects. Pregnant women, diabetics and children must not follow the diet.

TipIf you want to try the diet, do not just have watermelon alone. You can add some healthy protein, fat and carbs to have a balance diet.

We recommend you to consult a doctor before choosing to follow this diet.

Why Nutrirtionists recommend fruit diet?

Very often, when you go to a physician, he/ she checks your weight, once you're found to be obese, they prescribe a fruit diet for you for a week ! Or the physician, may refer you to a nutritionist, who can help you plan your menu ! Most often, when goes on a diet, it is short-lived, as most people find it difficult to continue in such diet. But one thing for sure, it is always advisable to eat more fruits and vegetables, as they're full of nutrition, fibre and above all low in calories. The kind of diet you follow also makes a difference. Among several weight loss diets, mono fruit diet or mix fruit diet has become popular.

1.Virtues of Fruits: Fruits are accessible and acceptable in ancient times by all generations. They are used in wide variety of form. Virtue of fruits lies in their high nutrition value, range of colours, taste, flavour, texture and processing capacity. Nutritionally they are low in fat and calories but high in water content, fibre, and phytochemicals.

2.Anti-obesity compounds: Beta carotene, vitamin C, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, zinc, and other various phytochemicals are abundantly found in fruits which support utilization of reserve energy and breakdown the fat.

3.Improves gut ecology: Fruits impacts the growth of certain favorable bacteria and reduce the harmful bacteria thus impacts digestive health and cholesterol levels.

4.Provides satiety: High fibre content of whole fruits and more dark rich coloured fruits gives the feeling of fullness and delay gastric emptying. Some time high water containing fruits may give you hunger pangs. Fruit juices are not good choices for weight watchers.

5.Reduces calorie intake: Fruits contain glucose, fructose in digestible form. Since they themselves are low in calorie and high in nutrients hence consumption of fruits does not increase calories to the diet. In addition they tend to curb the craving for energy rich foods.

6.Fructose intake: Fructose is presents in its natural form in fruits. Rather they are sweet because of fruits only. Fructose obtained from refined foods like sugar and high fructose corn syrup is the culprit for belly fat. Powerful compounds found in fruits debar the harmful impact of fructose.

7.Balanced Diet: Balanced diet subsists on the notion of getting nourishment by all five food groups. Fruits are only one group. So complete nutrition from fruit is not possible. Fruits are not the rich sources of protein.
