Here's How to Prevent and Treat Intestinal Parasites

It’s a common misconception for people to think that intestinal parasites are only a thing in underdeveloped countries, but they’re much more common in developed countries than you might think. Over 3 billion people around the world have or have had intestinal parasites at some point in their lives, according to the World Health Organization. Here’s all you need to know about them:

What are intestinal parasites?

Here's How to Prevent and Treat Intestinal Parasites
There are many different kinds of parasite, however the two main types of intestinal parasite are helminths and protozoa. The former consists of worms with many cells that cannot multiply within the confines of the human body. Examples of these are tapeworms, pinworms and roundworms. On the other hand, protozoa are single-cell organisms that have the ability to multiply inside the human body. They can cause very serious infections.

How do you get intestinal parasites?

Intestinal parasites are usually transmitted when coming into contact with infected feces, such as through contaminated soil, food or water. Other factors, such as visiting an area known to have parasites, poor hygiene, and sanitation, having a weak immune system, handling animals, and the age of the individual, increase the risk of contracting intestinal parasites. Children and the elderly are most at risk, and what’s more is that intestinal parasites are contagious and can be passed on to others with ease.

Why are intestinal parasites dangerous?

In essence, intestinal parasites are dangerous because they feed off of our bodies. When our intestines become hosts for parasites, not even the high level of acidity in the gut is enough for the body to protect itself, so it turns to the immune system for protection instead. This often leads to an inflamed gut.

Intestinal parasites inhibit the correct absorption of nutrients into the body, as well as release toxins into the bloodstream and lymphatic system. In addition, a bowel obstruction can occur in the event of a severe infection. This obstruction (if not a total blockage) prevents food, fluids, and gas from moving through the intestines normally. Severe infestation can even cause anemia due to bleeding in the intestines.

Key symptoms of a parasitic infection in the body

1. Excessive food cravings or alternatively loss of appetite

2. Weight loss

3. Stomach pain

4. Constipation, diarrhea, gas, or other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

5. Blood sugar fluctuations

6. Skin disorders, such as acute itching or pain around the rectum and other body parts, rashes or other skin irritations

7. Anxiety and depression

8. Sleep disorders

9. Pain or aching muscles or joints

10. Fatigue and exhaustion

11. Iron-deficiency or anemia

12. Immune disorders with an excessive number of bacterial, fungal or viral infections

13. Diminished libido

14. Bloody stools or light-colored stool

15. Nausea or vomiting

16. White specks in stool

17. Sulfur burps

How to treat intestinal parasites

You can rid yourself of a parasitic infection through conventional medication or through the use of alternative medical treatments. Consult your doctor if you believe that you might be hosting an intestinal parasite.

 Conventional medicine

Your doctor will be able to tell you if you have an intestinal parasite by conducting a simple stool test. If the test is positive, then they will prescribe medication accordingly.

Alternative medicine

1. Herbs

Garlic, goldenseal, barberry, anise, Oregon grape, wormwood, wormseed, black walnuts, curled mint, cloves, oregano, thyme, and olive leaf are among the most commonly-prescribed herbs to treat intestinal parasites, but consult your physician prior to ingesting any.

2. Supplements

You should always consult a physician prior to taking any supplements, but probiotics, digestive enzymes, vitamin C and zinc can all help to heal you of internal parasites.

3. Homeopathic remedies

Cina, indigo, spigelia, podophyllum, cuprum oxidatum nigrum, teucrium, sabadilla, stanum are all good remedies for intestinal parasites.

4. Diet

A diet rich in raw garlic, pumpkin seeds, papaya seeds, pineapple, carrots, beets, and pomegranates can help to kill parasites.

5. Intestinal cleansing
Try eating a high-fiber diet inclusive of psyllium husks, citrus pectin, papaya extract, bentonite clay, activated charcoal, pumpkin seeds, beetroot, and flaxseed. These will do wonders for detoxifying your body.

Preventing infection

Parasitic infections are highly contagious, with parasite eggs potentially being passed on easily to anything (or anyone) you touch. It’s crucial to wash your hands and maintain good hygiene to reduce the chances of further transmission. Pay attention to the quality of drinking water and the hygienic conditions of where your food is being prepared if you’re traveling overseas, and also wash any fruits and vegetables.

14 Unusual Uses for Garlic

Pungent and powerful garlic has dozens of health and household uses - some of which might seem pretty unusual at first glance. While garlic is an important ally for natural health (you may be familiar with the fact that garlic has the ability to increase immunity, neutralize colds and is a recognized broad-spectrum antibiotic), its functions extend beyond these common uses. Check out these 14 unusual alternative uses for garlic:
1. A Great Aid for Athlete's Foot
Being a potent, natural anti-fungal, garlic is ideal for treating fungal infections like irritating and itchy athlete's foot. Just add a couple of crushed garlic cloves to warm water in a foot bath and soak the affected area for 30 minutes.

2. Helps in Preventing Gas
While garlic can cause uncomfortable stomach-distending gas in some people due to its high sulfur content, it reportedly eases gas in others. In order to maintain good intestinal health, you need to consume it on a regular basis. Garlic can kill harmful intestinal bacteria, promoting the growth of beneficial flora and making digestion smoother.

3. Combats Hair Loss
Before resorting to more drastic measures, if you are going bald, give garlic a shot. It is believed that massaging the scalp with garlic oil stimulates hair growth.

4. Apply it to Breakouts of Acne
Though it will make your skin smell, the antibacterial properties of garlic will help lessen the appearance of acne, including those deep acne cysts that can otherwise be difficult to treat. Just slice open a clove of raw, fresh garlic and apply it to breakouts.

5. Aids in Weight Loss
Though you cannot count on garlic to help you lose a lot of weight, research shows that garlic has the potential for assisting with weight loss. Compounds found in garlic send signals of satiety to your brain, which will actually help you to feel full faster. It also boosts metabolic function, enabling you to burn more calories.

6. Use it as a Natural Pesticide
An all-natural garlic pesticide spray can be used to ward off pests like whiteflies, aphids, cabbage loopers, and squash bugs. All you need to do is mince three garlic cloves and let them sit in two tablespoons of mineral oil for 24 hours. Then, strain out the garlic and add the oil, along with a teaspoon of liquid dish soap, to a pint of water in a spray bottle and spray on infested plants.

7. Use it to Repel Mosquitoes
You don’t need to use DEET and other potentially toxic chemicals to ward off mosquitoes - garlic can work wonders for you instead. To prepare a mosquito spray, let a few minced cloves of garlic infuse in an ounce of mineral oil for 24 hours. Strain and mix the garlic-scented oil with two cups of water and one teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice. If necessary, strain again and pour into a spray bottle.

 8. Use it as a Natural Adhesive to Repair Glass
Though it may not work on major jobs, garlic juice can be used to fill in hairline cracks in glass and hold them together. Simply crush a clove of garlic and rub its sticky, viscous juice in the cracks. Then wipe away the excess.

9. Kills Bacteria that Cause Ear Infections
This common folk remedy has been used for centuries. Simply crush a clove of garlic and place it in a teaspoon of hot olive oil for five minutes. Strain, allow to cool, then drip a few drops at a time into your ear canal. Alternatively, you can purchase garlic oil from natural health food stores.

10. Helps Remove Splinters
Splinters are painful to remove and may at times dig a little too deep into the skin to pull out, but this odd trick can really work. Place a thin slice of garlic over the splinter, keeping it on with a bandage. The garlic should help the splinter work its way out of the skin within a few hours.

11. Use it to Relieve Psoriasis
Garlic's anti-inflammatory properties could ease or even prevent persistent tightness and itching caused by psoriasis. Active compounds in garlic interact with arachidonic acid, an omega fatty acid in the skin linked to psoriasis. You may also rub garlic oil on the affected areas once or twice per day.

12. Use it as a Cough Syrup
Garlic can be used as a cough syrup to ease inflammation in the throat and clear up excess mucus. Add raw, minced garlic to hot water, straining it after five minutes and drinking the liquid as tea. To make it more palatable, add ginger and honey.

13. Garlic makes for a Fantastic Road De-icer
Come winter, many towns de-ice their roads. Ankeny, Iowa smelled awfully savory in 2008 when winter transportation crews spread garlic salt on the streets in preparation ahead of incoming snowstorms. The salt, donated by a local spice producer, was apparently deemed unfit for human consumption.

14. Kills Intestinal Parasites
Many alternative health practitioners advise using raw garlic to expel intestinal parasites. Consumed in quantities of about three cloves per day, garlic may help clear nasty organisms out of the digestive tract. It is recommended as part of a cleansing diet that also includes raw honey, lemon juice, pumpkin seeds, carrots, and beets.

The Health Benefits of Oregano

Oregano, this commonly found herb has gained popularity as a natural remedy for a number of common health problems and as an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. These are some of the health benefits of oregano that you may not have known about.

Note: It is recommended that you purchase oregano oil for a number of these home remedies due to its concentrated strength. Oregano oil can be found at most health stores and in some pharmacies. Essential oils should not be applied directly to the skin, but should be mixed with a carrier oil (such as olive oil).

1. Can Be Used to Treat the Common Cold Oregano is a powerful antioxidant and has antiseptic properties that flush out your system, making it an excellent treatment for the common cold.
When you feel a sore throat coming on, add three drops of oregano oil to a glass of orange juice or water. Drink it once a day for up to five days until the symptoms are gone. You can also use dried oregano in tea and drink it two to three times a day.
2. Relieves Nasal Congestion
Oregano is a completely natural and safe antihistamine that few people know about.
To clear out a blocked nose and sore throat, add two or three drops of oregano oil to one half-cup of boiling water. Cover your head with a towel and inhale the vapor. Do this twice daily and you will be breathing freely.

3. Treat the Flu Oregano can even be used to treat the flu! It has antiviral properties that can effectively shorten the duration of flu symptoms such as high fever, cough, sore throat, headache, and aching in the joints and muscles.
An effective treatment for some of the flu symptoms is to mix a few drops of oregano oil in a glass of water and drink it once daily for three to five days.
4. Ease Menstrual Cramps
Oregano is also an effective pain reliever and can be a great treatment for those that suffer from menstrual cramps.
Chew fresh oregano leaves three times a day to reduce the pain. You can also drink oregano tea for quick relief. To make the tea, mix one-half teaspoon of dried oregano in one cup of water and bring it to a boil over the stove. Strain it and add sugar to taste. Drink this tea three to four times daily.
Oregano oil can also be used to regulate the menstrual cycle, reduce the negative effects of menopause, and even prevent premature menopause.
 5. Kills Intestinal Parasites
Intestinal parasites are those unwanted inhabitants of the gastrointestinal system that can cause you discomfort and increase your risk of contracting various diseases. Dried oregano effectively kills off these parasites, especially in its oil form. Oregano also contains two antimicrobial agents called thymol and carvacrol which have been proven effective in treating intestinal parasites.
Add two to three drops of oregano oil to water along with some freshly squeezed lemon juice and drink up to three times a day.
6. Can Improve Heart Health
Oregano is also a great source of potassium, which is a component of our cell and body fluids that helps control rapid heart rate and blood pressure. Using these remedies can counteract high intakes of sodium and other substances that are dangerous to heart health.
The antioxidants in oregano are believed to prevent and repair oxidative stress and heart disease, among a number of other heart conditions. It is also a source of omega-3 fatty acids that help reduce inflammation in the body and lower the risk of heart disease.
Drink one cup of oregano tea daily to improve your heart health.

7. Control Asthma Attacks Rich in lung-cleansing elements like carvacrol, flavonoids, and terpenes, oregano clears the respiratory tract to provide relief from asthma attacks.
When suffering from an asthma attack, drink oregano tea sweetened with honey four to five times a day. You can also extract the juice from the oregano leaves (using a blender) and take one teaspoon of it every hour to relieve asthma and chronic coughing.
8. Stimulates Appetite
If you have a weak appetite, oregano is a great option to keep it up. Studies have shown that oregano can relax stomach tension, which then stimulates the appetite.
Dilute oregano oil in water and use in the bath as a hot steam treatment or rub it into your skin to encourage an increased appetite. The herb also treats indigestion and bloating if you experience them.

9. Maintains Body Weight Anyone looking to shed pounds or maintain a healthy weight should surely add oregano to their daily diet. The herb is free of cholesterol and is a rich source of dietary fiber. Fiber helps you manage your weight and can keep the body fit and free of disease.
Oregano actually helps dissolve fat build up in areas like the liver, gallbladder, lymph system, and more. This is because oregano contains carvacrol which is capable of dissolving fat into droplets.
10. Protect Against Cancer
Because oregano is a good source of fiber, it removes bile salts and cancer-causing toxins from the colon and other areas of the body. This then forces the body to break down cholesterol to make more bile salts, thus lowering high cholesterol on the way.
Oregano is also antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, and it can be used to slow down the progress of some cancers like breast and prostate cancers.
