Castor oil belly patch trend is everywhere, but does it really work?

Are castor oil belly patches as effective as social media users claim? | Photo: Generative AI

The dream is simple: wake up early in the morning, start the day with a workout, enjoy a nutritious breakfast, eat protein-packed meals throughout the day with a good dose of hydration, and get to bed on time for quality sleep without any unnecessary scrolling.

For many of us, however, this remains a distant dream. After scrolling late into the night, waking up early feels nearly impossible. Workouts are often skipped, and breakfast quickly turns into an on-the-go cup of coffee. You can pretty much guess how the rest of the day unfolds.

This is perhaps why so many of us turn to the endless stream of wellness hacks flooding social media, hoping they might help us stay on track with our health goals. One such hack that has recently been making the rounds online is the castor oil belly patch.

The method is fairly simple. It involves placing one to two tablespoons of high-quality, hexane-free castor oil onto a cotton patch or flannel cloth. The soaked side is then placed directly over the belly button or lower abdomen, secured with adhesive, and left on for one to two hours, or even overnight, ideally four to seven times a week.

But the thing about social media wellness hacks is that it's hard to know whether they actually work. So, we asked experts to weigh in.

The Ayurveda perspective

Dr Partap Chauhan, founder and director of Jiva Ayurveda, shares that while this may look like a modern wellness hack, the idea actually touches upon deeper Ayurvedic concepts about digestion, circulation, and abdominal health.

"In Ayurveda, the region around the navel is considered closely associated with digestive fire or agni. Many classical Ayurvedic therapies focus on strengthening digestion because it influences energy, immunity, and tissue nourishment," he tells India Today.

Further, Dr Issac Mathai, founder and medical director of Ayurveda treatment centre SOUKYA, notes that applying castor oil patches may provide several benefits, including detoxification, improved digestion, relief from constipation, reduced inflammation, menstrual pain relief, and better circulation.

While some may also find that this hack improves sleep or reduces abdominal tightness, these effects are generally supportive rather than curative.

"Applying castor oil around the belly button is not a miracle solution, but it may offer mild comfort for some individuals when used thoughtfully," shares Dr Chauhan.

The science perspective

According to Dr Ruby Sachdev, consultant aesthetic physician at Gleneagles Hospital, Bengaluru, castor oil primarily acts as a moisturiser when applied to the skin.

"The skin is designed to keep most substances out. Oils applied on the surface do not travel deep enough to reach internal organs, which is why applying castor oil around the belly button is unlikely to affect digestion or hormone levels," she explains.

She adds that there is no scientific evidence to support claims that castor oil packs can detox the gut or regulate hormones, and any perceived relief is more likely due to the warmth of the compress or the gentle massage of the area.

Dr Pavan Reddy Thondapu, HOD of medical gastroenterology at Arete Hospitals, Hyderabad, echoes a similar view. From a medical standpoint, he says there is no clear evidence that castor oil patches improve digestion, reduce bloating, or aid sleep.

"Digestion is controlled by internal organs and complex interactions between the gut, nerves, and hormones. Applying oil on the skin does not influence these processes," he explains.

For recurring bloating or digestive discomfort, experts suggest focusing on diet, hydration, physical activity, and stress levels. If symptoms persist, it is best to consult a doctor to identify the underlying cause.

The experts mention that using castor oil patches for a short time is usually fine, but leaving oil-soaked patches on for too long, especially overnight, can irritate the skin, clog pores, or even cause breakouts. Some people might also react to the oil or the adhesive.

If you have sensitive skin, existing issues like eczema or fungal infections, or are prone to body acne, it's best to be careful. And if you're allergic to castor oil or adhesives, skip it altogether. Pregnant women should check with a doctor before trying it.

Takeaway

Castor oil patches may be all over social media right now, and while there's usually no harm in trying them, any relief you feel is likely to be temporary. A lot of it comes down to the warmth or just taking time to relax, rather than the oil doing anything significant.

That said, it's best not to rely on these hacks for bigger health concerns. If you're dealing with ongoing digestion issues or discomfort, it's always better to get proper medical advice instead of depending on trends.

NOTE- I don't know how far it works, but read sometime back, that those having cancer tumours, by putting castor oil soaked in cloth over the place, the tumour size did reduce. This was tried in some clinic in the US.

One thing that I can surely vouch is rubbing castor oil, over the black patches in my leg due to varicose veins did help the skin to get back to the original colour.

My father was a big fan of castor oil, At leas once a month, he'ld drink it, as it helps the stomach to clean. According to him, if your bowels are clean, then you'll not get sick. He was never sick , I can vouch. I can say only towards the last 3-4 years of his life, he was on some medicine, as my mom was there no more to take care of him.

I also feel once you've regular bowel movements, then there is less chance of being sick, as toxins are out of the body.

During the hard days now due to war, my sincere prayers for peace to prevail in the world, so ordinary lives of citizens aren't much affected.

EATING OATMEAL IS HEALTHY-----

1. Oatmeal decreases the level of cholesterol in your blood as well as your risk of cardiac diseases
The FDA approved, in a unique move, a health label on oatmeal packages that explains how soluble fibers from oatmeal, as part of a low trans-fat diet, can decrease your chances of being afflicted with heart conditions. This was based on 30 years of research into oatmeal and its benefits.

2. Oatmeal helps the digestion process
The soluble fibers in oatmeal are taken apart in the lower intestine by resident bacteria. Those fibers that were not taken apart increase the volume of food and hasten bowel movements. This method decreases the likelihood of inflammatory diseases in the lower intestine, including hemorrhoids.
Tip: To enjoy these benefits, drink plenty of water. Consuming these fibers without drinking can cause constipation, stomachaches and flatulence.

3. Oatmeal and blood sugar levels
Again, we turn to the soluble fibers, which slow down the absorption of carbohydrates, and so prevent sharp increases in blood sugar levels. A 10 year long research was published in the American Journal of Public Health and has shown that consuming about 1 cup of cooked oatmeal a day, 2-4 times a week, will decrease the risk of type II diabetes by 16%. When you bring it up to 5-6 times a week - the risk goes down by 39%.

4. Getting thinner with oatmeal
Oatmeal adds volume to the food by absorbing the liquid around it. In addition, the fibers slow the digestion process and give us a feeling of being full for longer periods of time.

5. Oatmeal improves quality of sleep
People who consumed oatmeal before going to bed have demonstrated better and higher quality sleep than people who didn't. Oatmeal contains the essential amino acid tryptophan (one of the protein building blocks which we only get from food). Tryptophan is a source material for creating melatonin (as well as serotonin). A lack of melatonin will cause sleeping problems, while an increase in tryptophan will prolong our deep sleep.

Recommended amount per day: The general recommendation is about 4-5 spoons a day (can make a porridge of it), so you too can start enjoying the health benefits of oatmeal (at about 25-30 grams a day).

8 Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water

1. Boosts Your Immune System

Lemons are rich in vitamin C, B, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and fiber. Although vitamin C is the key to jump-starting our immune system, the rest of the nutritional benefits of the lemon can certainly do you no harm. It's good to drink a glass or two of lemon water when you are feeling stressed, because that is when your immune system is most likely to fall weak to any surrounding bacteria or viruses.

2. A Surprising Source of Potassium

Potassium is good for your heart health as well as your brain and nerve function. It is usually found in vegetables like potatoes and spinach, but lemons are also an excellent source for a potassium boost.

3. Eases Your Digestion

Lemon water should be drunk at room temperature as warm water helps stimulate smooth movement within the gastrointestinal tract. Lemons and other citrus fruits contribute to this effect because they are high in vitamins and minerals that loosen up the toxins in the digestive tract, known as ama. Lemon is an excellent natural remedy for symptoms of indigestion like heartburn and bloating.

4. A Natural Diuretic

Lemons increase the rate of urination and therefore are able to quickly remove toxins in the digestive tract that can affect the health of the urinary tract.

5. Keeps Your Skin Clear

The potent vitamin C in lemons helps keep the skin blemish and wrinkle-free. In addition the antioxidants in lemon juice can be applied to scars and age spots in order to reduce their appearance without diminishing the skin's radiance.

6. Reduces Inflammation

Drinking lemon water on a regular basis may decrease the levels of acidity within the body, which is where disease is most likely to occur. It works to remove uric acid in the joints which is the main source for joint pain and inflammation. It's best to drink the lemon water in the winter at a lukewarm temperature to fight off the effects of cold-weather stiffness.

7. A Caffeine Aid

Lemon juice is an excellent way to cut back on caffeine in coffee or soda because it has similar rejuvenating effects. Substituting your morning cup of joe for a cup of hot water and lemon may save you from an afternoon crash and quiet your caffeine cravings.

8. Keeps You Hydrated

Starting your day off with a cup of hot lemon water can not only prevent fatigue later on in the day, but also dehydration. Dehydration is one of the major causes of toxic buildup, stress and even susceptibility to viral infections. So if you are the kind that forgets to drink water, it is recommended that you drink lemon water in order to stay hydrated throughout the day.
