Feeling bloated like a balloon despite eating right? Nutritionist reveals surprising causes and easy tricks to cure a gassy gut

Feeling uncomfortably swollen after a meal is a common complaint, but nutritionist Dr Emma Derbyshire tells the Daily Mail that there are actually five distinct types of bloating. According to the 2023 Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study, which surveyed 51,425 people across 26 countries, nearly one in five adults experience bloating at least once a week, often accompanied by nausea or abdominal pain.

The Usual Suspects: Gas, Hormones, and Water Retention

Dr Derbyshire explains that bloating can stem from more than just diet. The five main types include: gas-related bloating from beans and fizzy drinks, water retention, hormonal fluctuations, food sensitivities, and sluggish digestion. She warns that factors like stress, constipation, anxiety, and gastrointestinal conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome can also contribute. “There is often more than one root cause, but the most common is gastrointestinal gas”, she said.

Spotting the Signs of Bloating

Classic symptoms include abdominal fullness or pressure, noticeable swelling even without weight gain, gurgling or cramping, and increased passing of gas. The duration varies depending on the trigger, lasting from a few hours to several days. People with food intolerances, irritable bowel conditions, or an unhealthy gut microbiome may be more prone. Women may experience temporary bloating during their menstrual cycle due to hormonal shifts and water retention.

Which Foods Trigger the Balloon Effect?

While baked beans might come to mind first, Dr Derbyshire highlights that pulses, lentils, dairy, fizzy drinks, gluten-heavy foods, sugar-free sweeteners, greasy junk food, and spicy dishes can all worsen bloating. She advises moderation rather than complete avoidance, particularly with high-fat or sugary treats that can upset gut bacteria.

Quick Fixes to Deflate the Belly

Hydration is key, even for water retention, says Dr Derbyshire. Peppermint tea, gentle walks, heat packs, and loosening tight clothing can provide relief. She recommends monitoring food intake through a diary to identify personal triggers and patterns.

Addressing stress is crucial for gut health. Dr Derbyshire suggests mindful practices like deep breathing, reducing alcohol, eating smaller portions, and staying active through walks or brief exercises at home. A daily probiotic containing Bifidobacterium longum 35624 and consuming five servings of fruit and vegetables can also help reduce bloating and abdominal discomfort.

When to Seek Medical Advice

While occasional bloating is usually harmless, Dr Derbyshire advises seeing a doctor if it persists for more than three weeks, occurs more than three to four times weekly, or is accompanied by severe symptoms such as pain, fever, blood in stools, vomiting, heartburn, or loss of appetite.

Feeling like a balloon is not always about what you eat. Experts say understanding the type of bloating and managing lifestyle factors is key to deflating discomfort and keeping your gut happy.

4 foods to include in your diet (and 3 to avoid) for stronger bones

Here is what you should eat
Bones support our body. It surrounds our delicate organs and protects them from any kind of external injury. And it is very important to have strong and dense bones. Flexible muscles and strong bones both are important to be physically fit. Many nutrients help to keep our bones healthy and out of all Vitamin D and calcium are the prominent ones. Calcium is essential for muscle contraction, oocyte activation, strong bones and teeth, while Vitamin D helps to absorb calcium in the body. Apart from this, vitamin K, vitamin C, magnesium, and phosphorus are some other nutrients required for your bone health. Here is a list of 4 foods that are good for your bone health.
Soybeans
Being a good source of protein and calcium, soybean is a bone-friendly addition to our diet. A study carried out by researchers from the University of Missouri in Columbia suggests that consuming soy-based products could help strengthen bones in postmenopausal women.
Green leafy vegetable
The green leafy vegetable is something you must include in your diet. Vegetables like kale, broccoli and spinach are packed with different kinds of healthy nutrients, which are not only good for your bone health but also keep other chronic diseases at bay.
Pumpkin seeds
Pumpkin seeds are a good source of magnesium that help in bone formation. High intake of magnesium increases the bone density and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. The seeds also contain healthy fats that reduce inflammation and maintain bone strength.
Sardines
Sardines are one of the widely consumed fishes in India. It is a part of the staple diet in the coastal region of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Sardines are a rich source of calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and other bone-building minerals like phosphorus and zinc.

Avoid: Salty food
Food with high sodium content can increase the risk of high blood pressure and is also not good for your bones. Sodium affects the amount of calcium balance in the body by increasing its excretion. Make sure you eat salt in moderation and do not sprinkle additional salt on top of your food.
Avoid: Caffeine
You may feel energized after drinking caffeine, but the feeling goes away after a while. It has been found that people who drink more than 300 milligrams of coffee everyday suffer from bone loss.
Avoid: Fizzy drinks
High in sugar and phosphorus, fizzy drinks can both harm your teeth and bones. Try to stay away from it as much as possible. As per 2006, carbonated beverages, are associated with low bone density in older women.

A new study links addiction to fizzy drinks to colon cancer

Do you find yourself reaching out to fizzy drinks out of habit? Do you prefer having Cola when you feel thirsty? Do you depend on fizzy drinks to help you recover from an episode of binge eating? If this is the case, you ought to be careful. A recent study has highlighted the case of fizzy drink addiction that could actually mean to be something serious. In worst case scenario, it can even lead to cancer. Yes! You read that right.

The purpose of the study was to analyse the increase in bowel cancer incidences in people under the age of 35. The researchers discovered that two common elements, glucose and fructose, which are present in fizzy drinks, sweetened by corn syrup, actually spiked the growth of intestinal tumours in mice. They fed high-fructose syrup to mice who were vulnerable to intestinal cancer and found out that the tumor started eating the sugar - "in fact the cancer was using fructose and glucose together to more than double its growth rate," shared a Dr. And the high fructose syrup that they were fed equaled less than one Coke can a day for us humans.

While this is evidence to study the link between tumours and fizzy drinks, but we have to take into consideration that this study was done on mice who were predisposed to the risk of cancer. This could mean that the risk may not be real for humans but it is only ideal to cut out high fructose corn syrup from your diet, regardless of it being directly linked to cancers, since there are multiple risk factors associated with the consumption of fizzy drinks every day.

Dangers of Drinking Fizzy Drinks!

Whether you call it pop, soda, lolly water, or any other variation - you probably indulge in a can of it from time to time.

While soda has already been linked to diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases, many people still consumes at least 2 sweet carbonated drinks every day. A study from the University Of California, San Francisco found direct links between the consumption of sweetened carbonated beverages and premature cellular aging.

The authors of the research, Elissa Epel, Ph.D. and Cindy Leung, Ph.D., decided to test the effects of sugared soda on the aging process. The researchers tested a group of people who consumed 12-20 ounces of soda or more on a daily basis, and measured the length of their telomere (the ends of chromosomes, which protect them from deterioration) and found that, when compared to the control group, their telomeres were significantly shorter. A short telomere is an indicator of upcoming disease onset and has been linked to the development of cancer and cellular aging.

The study tested the length of the telomere before and after regular consumption of soft drinks and found that they, indeed, cause significant shortening of the telomere. When put in numbers, the results are even more shocking: Daily consumption of 20 ounces of carbonated drinks was shown to cause 4.6 years of cellular damage, meaning your body ages 4.6 years, only because you drink soda. Furthermore, telomere shortening has been associated with insulin resistance, oxidative damage to the tissues, and inflammation.

The 5,309 participants, all aged between 20-65, came from different backgrounds, lived different lifestyles, and were of various races and ethnicities, yet the results were similar for all. Furthermore, the research found that it is likely that this kind of cellular damage can occur in children.

This is why it is highly recommended that you avoid drinking these types of drinks and opt for a healthier option, such as natural fruit juice or water.
