Rheumatoid arthritis: These Ayurvedic remedies will help relieve swelling, pain

Of the several inflammatory conditions, one of the most common is Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) — “a type of joint pain that is no longer limited to older people; there is a rise in the condition among young adults, including those who have recovered from Covid-19,” said Dr Vishwajeet Chavan, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Pune while sharing that 15-20 per cent young patients (35-40 years) also suffer from joint pain.

What is RA?

An autoimmune disorder, RA affects the joints, skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels. “It is a condition when a person’s immune system begins attacking body tissues,” said Vikas Chawla, Ayurveda expert, founder, and director, Vedas Cure.

Symptoms

A 2014-Research Gate study lists the following symptoms of RA.

*Warm, swollen joints
*Symmetrical pattern of affected joints
*Fatigue, occasional fevers, loss of energy
*Joint inflammation that often affects the wrist and finger joints
*Joint inflammation sometimes affecting the joints in the neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.

“In RA, the joints are damaged to a huge extent that ultimately leads to its destruction and deformity. Although RA has no proper cure it can be treated well under good medications with sufficient rest and regular exercises, and occasionally surgery,” the study noted.

While a healthy diet consisting of fresh vegetables along with dairy products, nuts, seeds, and fish as well as enough sunlight every day (for vitamin D) is recommended, Dr Mihir Khatri, an ayurvedic practitioner also shared some natural remedies that people with RA can count on.

Fenugreek seeds

Have a spoonful of fenugreek seeds powder with water after meals or soak seeds (spoonful) in a cup of water overnight. Chew them in the morning and drink the water for better effect.

Ginger tea

Have dry ginger powder (about 2.5 grams or half spoon) in two cups of water. Boil the mixture till it becomes one cup. Strain the liquid and add a spoon full of castor oil and drink it.

According to Dr Khatri, it is best for pain with swelling as it removes toxins from the gut. “Ginger reduces pain and swelling. Castor oil helps against inflammation,” he said.

Drumstick soup

Dr Khatri shared that drumstick is one of the best vegetables to relieve swelling and pain. “It reduces inflammation from body, and also improves kidney function,” said Dr Khatri, adding that one can cut drumstick into pieces and boil in water. Add rock salt, and black pepper. “Crush and strain or chew the stick directly,” he suggested.

Additionally, one must drink “lukewarm water” through the day. “It helps reduce bloating, and removes undigested food from the body,” said Dr Khatri, further stating that it will also make one feel light and energetic. “Dinner should be light (easy to digest) and early,” he shared.

What to avoid?

Regular consumption of tomato, curd, bakery items, and fermented food as well as excess of salty foods should be strictly avoided, according to the expert.

“Fenugreek seeds are good for RA patients, and should be consumed early morning or after dinner. It has anti-inflammatory properties, which cure joint pains. Ginger tea is also an important drink as it removes pain and swelling and removes toxins from the gut. Drumstick soup is also a sapid starter which eliminates inflammation and relaxes the body. Lukewarm water might sound like a generic drink, but its health benefits cannot be denied. It reduces bloating, keeps the stomach feeling lighter and is the most energising and refreshing drink, which might lower the symptoms of RA,” Chawla told.

How do they help improve the symptoms?

All of the above-mentioned remedies help improve the body’s metabolism (the cause of RA), said Dr Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya, an ayurvedic practitioner. “RA is caused due to indigestion (and not due to friction in joints like other arthritis),” she added, further suggesting that turmeric, ginger, and mint work too.

The Research Gate study also listed turmeric as an “extremely effective anti-inflammatory herb that acts as a pain reliever”. “Curcumin and curcuminoids are the two essential chemicals that help to decrease inflammation and are the most recommended remedy for RA”. A 2020- National Centre for Biotechnology Information study also pinpointed that a few herbs exhibited strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities, contributing to a reduction in inflammation and tissue damage. While more studies and clinical trials are warranted, several herbs elucidated new mechanisms for RA treatment, it mentioned.

Curcumin Gold: The Next Standard in Treating Joint Pain

Do you suffer pain in your joints? It could be your knees, your elbows, your shoulder, your ankle or your hips - Joint pain is a very common complaint nowadays. Joint pains can be weak or strong and can be acute - lasting from one to two weeks, or chronic – lasting for several months. Whether it’s a strong pain or a weak one, it lowers our quality of life, letting the pain seep into every action you make and making you dread stairs, jumps and any menial task that requires you to put pressure on your joints.
According to the Arthritis Foundation, about 27 million people in the United States have this chronic condition and suffer daily pains in the knees, hips, hands and other parts of the body. It is an almost unavoidable problem and the risk of suffering from it increases as time advances. It strikes people of both genders and occurs in people of all races and ages, although it is of course especially bad for those of later ages. There is no other word for it but an epidemic.

This epidemic is followed closely by another one - pain medication. Pain medication has gone rampant, with thousands of deaths a year in the United States alone from overuse. People who take NSAID medication (such as Ibuprofen, Advil, Tylenol, Aleve, etc.) - are doing themselves more harm than good, with the most common problems with a long period of use are stomach ulcers, headaches, liver problems, and kidney problem - to name just a few.

common side effects of using pain medication over time

Researchers have always tried to offer alternative solutions to risky medication, and today is no different. We'd to talk to you about a solution to ongoing pain that is all-natural, and includes some of the ingredients we've been telling you about on this site for a long time, but combined together in a remarkably powerful mix called Curcumin Gold.
curcumin gold
Why Curcumin? Because it is the most important natural ingredient to fight joint pain. Curcumin, because of the shape of its molecule, is very effective in preventing the oxidation processes and activity of free radicals in the body, in other words, it is perhaps the most powerful antioxidant known to man, and thus slows the damage to our body cells and as a consequence - slows the aging of our joints.

Unfortunately, it doesn't get absorbed well when eating turmeric, and that is why it needs to be absorbed as a concentrated pill or oil. More than 3,000 publications have been published about the health effects of curcumin in the last 25 years.
curcumin
Curcumin fights inflammatory diseases and in fact is a very strong anti-inflammatory in general, particularly effective in aiding the body in the fight against arthritis. Studies have shown that cartilage destruction in mice that were given the extract was reduced by 66%, and bone destruction in patients who received the extract was reduced by 57%. According to the Journal of Nutrition Research, taking concentrated curcumin is equal to 1 hour of daily aerobic exercise.

Recent studies have shown that there is a particular molecule by the name NF-kB that acts as the master switch for inflammation, activating over 400 pro-inflammatory genes in the body. It just so happens that curcumin is one of the strongest natural ingredients shutting that master switch, along with another ingredient - ginger. Unlike many other conventional treatment options, this powerful duo gets to the root cause of the issue, helping to dampen the inflammatory response and freeing you from nagging pains.

These two ingredients are combined with an Algae Derived DHA - a much more powerful supplier of Omega-3 acids than any fish, and another powerful combatant against joint health and inflammation - in one solution.

Curcumin Gold is the new standard for fighting inflammation and pain at the ROOT of the cause, without running you the risk of destroying your body while over-medicating yourself with NSAID pills. Curcumin Gold combines these three incredibly powerful natural ingredients - Curcumin, Ginger and DHA - purified to their highest, most effective form. This creates a cascade effect as each ingredient boosts the effect of the others.

My husband and myself have been taking daily morning on empty stomach anywhere between 1/4-1/2 teaspoon each of turmeric, dry ginger and fenugreek powders, mix with water and you may drink your tea/ coffee after 10-15 minutes. They're all anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and so on and on. But, make it a habit, within a month you'll find your joint pain a lot better. Earlier while we traveled to meet our kids, I always carried these 3 powders with me. I mix the 3 and keep it covered in a small cup for hubby, as he gets up before me, as thanks to fibromyalgia, getting up in the morning is my biggest problem, once, I'm up, I'm on my feet till I hit the bed any time after 10-11 at night.

This All Natural Fever Reliever Really Works

Using potatoes has also become popular because it’s an easier smell to handle for most people. Using potatoes on the feet may also have originated in the distant past too.

More than these things, wouldn't it be better, if you stop getting fever and cold? Well, I'm sure that no one wants to be sick with fever and cold. A simple home remedy, which I read and tested and above all it works.

At the very first sign/ symptoms of catching fever/ cold, peel and cut a medium size onion into smaller pieces, anyway that suits you ( not necessary to be finely chopped or cut for cooking), then put the pieces in a small katori/ vessel and keep it right next to you for the next 4-5 days. If there is too much bacteria around you, it will turn black, less, it turns brown. On 5/6th day, without touching the onion, dump it in the bin. I've tried this so many times, especially when hubby was going to have his double by-pass surgery, I felt that I'm going to come down with fever. Worry of how can I take care of him, if I'm sick, made me try this. I was fit enough to take care of him. Even at the very first sign of getting cold, I cut onion and keep right next to me. Of course, few minutes eyes burn, then it gets used to it.

This is the reason, why they say don't cut onion and keep for long before cooking, as it will absorb bacteria. This is one of the reason, I tell my family to avoid having salad when we go out, as we don't know since how long it was cut and kept.

Take care, these simple things go a long way in leading a healthy life.

Is turmeric the go-to spice for managing diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that affects the body’s ability to process blood sugar, and if not kept under control can lead to an increased risk of stroke and/or a heart attack. A person is said to be diabetic when their blood sugar is excessively high and the insulin hormone produced in the pancreas — that breaks down the glucose — is either not made by the body or utilised well. The condition, if not managed well, can severely damage one’s eyes, kidneys and the overall health.

According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) estimate, 1.6 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes in 2016. It was the seventh-leading cause of death that year. But, it’s not all grim. The good news is that diabetes can be managed though a disciplined diet, regular screening and exercising.

Straight from the kitchen
When we talk about diet, we do not need to look beyond culinary wonders found in our own kitchen! Not many know that a dash of turmeric can actually do wonders in managing diabetes. A 2013 review of studies suggests that curcumin can decrease the level of glucose in blood, as well as other diabetes-related complications.

Made from the root curcuma longa, turmeric is the spice that towers above all other spices, as it has medical properties. Studies suggest that curcumin can decrease the glucose level in blood, improving the insulin function. Once the process begins, excess glucose in blood is able to reach the cells.

Consumption
Turmeric can be taken as a supplement, but it is always advisable to consult with your doctor first. To keep your blood sugar levels in check, take a pinch of ginger powder along with turmeric milk. This will help in improving your fasting blood sugar levels.

Additionally, various researches suggest that adding a pinch of cinnamon powder to turmeric milk can help lower insulin levels. The combination of spices can lower insulin levels and control cholesterol too.

One can also mix a pinch of turmeric in two tablespoons of gooseberry (amla) juice and have it in the morning. Gooseberry is known to have anti-diabetic properties as it improves cholesterol levels in diabetes patients.

Piperine aka black pepper is a good accompaniment to turmeric.

Side effects and disadvantages
While turmeric is safe for consumption, it should be noted that curcumin, which is the active component of turmeric, is slightly difficult to absorb. Though most people can tolerate turmeric, some might find that it doesn’t agree with their stomach. Others could have allergies. Its advised to start with a smaller dosage, after consulting an expert.

Drinks to Eliminate Knee and Joint Pain Naturally

Joint pain, especially in the knees, is a blight on your day. Whether caused by arthritis, injury, or repetitive stress, your joints are so critical to every movement you make that it is near impossible to feel comfortable. Painkillers, either OTC or doctor prescribed, can help. But these come with a host of side effects that may just be swapping one pain for another.

But what if there was a natural remedy you could sip on throughout the day? Get ready, because we have not one, but nine different beverages that can help wipe out your pain without any side effects.

It all comes down to reducing inflammation, which is the ultimate source of most joint discomfort. When you consume anti-inflammatory substances in liquid form, it has the added benefit of improving hydration in your body. Getting enough to drink is critical for keeping joints lubricated and blood flow healthy.

We’re getting thirsty, so let’s dive into the list. Which one will you be trying first?

1. Water

Let’s start with the basics. Our bodies are made up of about 70% water, so when we’re dehydrated, it reduces the cushioning that your joints rely on to work smoothly. A lack of sufficient water also means that your bod will be less capable of flushing out the toxins that can cause inflammation.
If you are experiencing joint pain, aim for about 2 litres per day of freshly filtered tap water. Don’t bother with fancy vitamin water – chances are that you’ll just pee out all of the extra stuff they put in, plus they typically have added sugar. Bottled water can be okay, but it is often pulled from the same municipal source as your tap.

2. Red Wine

Here’s a welcome surprise. Red wine is actually good for joint pain. Of course, alcohol in general can dull our senses and reduce pain that way. But red wine in particular contains something called resveratrol, a compound with powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

Enjoying a glass or two on a regular basis can actually reduce your risk of developing chronic joint diseases like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Just be careful not to drink to excess, as too much alcohol is dehydrating and will actually cause the inflammation you’re trying to eliminate. Also, you can get resveratrol from red grapes and red grape juice; it doesn’t necessarily need to be wine.

3. Tart Cherry Juice

Juice is usually discouraged for people with joint pain because it contains a lot of sugar. Sugar is inflammatory and juice contains no fiber to moderate the release of sugar into your bloodstream. Whole fruit is typically okay, because it contains a good amount fiber along with its sweetness.

An exception to the no-juice rule, however, is tart cherry juice. Studies have shown that it can reduce inflammation and swelling, thereby relieving symptoms of osteoarthritis.

4. Smoothies

Smoothies provide an excellent way to drink your fruit without missing out on the critical fiber. They are also great for sneaking in a few veggies – you won’t even taste ‘em. You should avoid putting in too much pure juice, but yogurt is a nice addition that makes for a smooth texture and offers some gut-healthy probiotics, as well.

Whatever helps you get your fruit and veggies every day is helpful for relieving knee and joint pain because produce contains a lot of antioxidants. Free radical damage is one major driver of inflammation in the body, and antioxidants are able to bind with free radicals to neutralize them.

5. Coffee

The studies around joint pain and coffee are contradictory, with some indicating that coffee can increase the risk of developing arthritis, while others note that coffee seems to reduce the risk of gout  (a painful form of arthritis that involves uric acid crystals in the joints). However, coffee definitely contains inflammation-fighting polyphenols.

If you already drink coffee, there is no reason to stop. Your morning brew may be helping to reduce your knee and joint pain. Just keep your consumption to 4 or fewer cups per day, as most studies find no ill-effects on joints before that level.

6. Tea

Even if you don’t care for coffee, you can still have a bracing morning beverage in the form of tea. Whether you choose black, green, or white tea, you will get a nice dose of antioxidant polyphenols to reduce inflammation in your joints. But not all teas are equal – the green variety has the most antioxidants, followed by white, and finally black.

Green tea has a particular polyphenol called epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) that can bolster and protect your bones and the surrounding cartilage. Sometimes improving the structure of your joints as well as reducing inflammation can relieve the pain you’re experiencing.

7. Ginger Tea

Ginger is a well-known anti-inflammatory. It is able to prevent the release of inflammatory molecules such as prostaglandin and leukotriene, as well pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are a type of protein found in cells. Ginger also contains a compound called gingerol, which not only reduces inflammation, but also soothes sore muscles.

Any beverage that contains ginger can help manage your joint pain. However, we recommend that you make it at home rather than rely on sugary ginger soda.

8. Milk

Joint pain is not always just about the space where your bones meet up. Overall bone health can make a difference in your pain levels, too. Milk contains a nice amount of calcium to strengthen bones and help them maintain a healthy density. Studies have indicated that drinking milk may be able to slow the progression of osteoarthritis and even prevent gout completely.

But, if you have a dietary sensitivity to dairy, milk will more likely exacerbate your knee and joint pain rather than soothe it. In that case, try to eat more green leafy veggies and nuts to make up the difference in calcium.

9. Turmeric, dry ginger powder and fenugreek ( methi) powder
On empty stomach, mix in a little cup 1/2 tsp each of the above mentioned powders, mix with water and drink. You may have your coffee or tea after 10 minutes. All the above are anti-inflammatory. In case you find it hard to drink 1/2 tsp of each powder, start with 1/4 tsp, then increase to 1/2. I can vouch, as both husband and myself are taking it daily.

Conclusion

Staying properly hydrated and naturally reducing inflammation are two of the best things you can do to eliminate knee and joint pain. You could always pop a pill, but with the negative side effects associated with all the major painkillers, it’s not always the wisest choice. This is especially true in the case of chronic pain, as the dangers of pain medication increase with extended use.

Instead, try these natural remedies first. You will be surprised by how much better you can feel with proper nutrition and hydration.
