Cheese and other milk products great for boosting your oral health!

A new study  has claimed that cheese and other dairy products can help protect the teeth. Cheese and other dairy products is very important for bones and overall health, however there’s little research into how it affects oral health. The new study published in the General Dentistry, the peer reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), sampled 68 subjects ranging in age from 12 to 15, and the authors looked at the dental plaque pH in the subjects’ mouths before and after they consumed cheese, milk, or sugar-free yogurt.

A pH level lower than 5.5 puts a person at risk for tooth erosion, which is a process that wears away the enamel (or protective outside layer) of teeth. ‘The higher the pH level is above 5.5, the lower the chance of developing cavities,’ said the lead author of the study. The subjects were assigned into groups randomly.

Researchers instructed the first group to eat cheddar cheese, the second group to drink milk, and the third group to eat sugar-free yogurt. Each group consumed their product for three minutes and then swished with water. Researchers measured the pH level of each subject’s mouth at 10, 20, and 30 minutes after consumption.

The groups who consumed milk and sugar-free yogurt experienced no changes in the pH levels in their mouths. Subjects who ate cheese, however, showed a rapid increase in pH levels at each time interval, suggesting that cheese has anti-cavity properties.

The study indicated that the rising pH levels from eating cheese may have occurred due to increased saliva production (the mouth’s natural way to maintain a baseline acidity level), which could be caused by the action of chewing. Additionally, various compounds found in cheese may adhere to tooth enamel and help further protect teeth from acid.

What are the health benefits of cheese and other milk products?
These milk products are rich in calcium which is particularly important during childhood because they can help make your bones stronger. A study also found that people who consume low-fat milk and cheese are less likely to suffer from stroke.

Tips to prevent cavities
Your tooth is one of the hardest parts of your body. But that doesn’t make it resistant to bacterial attack. Cavity causing species of bacteria convert the sugar from the food we eat into acids which demineralise and destruct the enamel of the tooth to create cavities in them. Luckily, preventing tooth cavities is equally easy.

Regular Use Of Sesame Seeds Helps To Boost Your Skin And Health

Sesame seeds have health benefits — while the antioxidant properties present in the seeds help in anti-ageing, the rich omega fatty acids content triggers hair growth, say experts. A nutritionist has shared a few inputs:
* It promotes glowing skin and helps in healing skin. Sesame seeds help the skin remain warm and moist. They are rich in anti-inflammatory properties that are vital in healing redness and other facial skin issues by getting rid of pathogens and other agents causing skin infections.

Mix one tablespoon olive oil and two tablespoons of powdered sesame seeds. Apply this mixture on your face after dampening it. Follow the same exercise once or twice a week.

* Benefits of sesame are not only for skin, but also for hair. It is said to trigger hair growth by nourishing the roots with its rich omega fatty acids content. It also helps in moisturising the scalp and improves blood circulation to rejuvenate hair follicles.

Add two teaspoons of sesame oil to 2-3 drops of rosemary essential oil and one tablespoon of aloe vera gel. Apply this mixture on your scalp and massage gently with circular motions for twice or thrice a week and rinse your hair with a chemical-free shampoo and conditioner.

* They contain the highest amount of oil contents as compared to any other seed which is healthy to consume. It helps in removing the dental plaque and boosts our oral health.

* Sesame seeds enhance our digestive health by relieving constipation.

* It is also beneficial for people who are under radiation treatments for cancer.

* The components of sesame seeds, like magnesium, helps in maintaining the level of insulin and glucose and reduces the chances of diabetes. The rich magnesium content is also ideal to reduce hypertension.

* Sesame seeds also contain anti-aging properties which nourish the hair and avoid the hair greying.

* It also reduces the inflammation in joints, bones and muscles. But remember not to consume the excessive amount of sesame seeds because too much of anything is not good for our health.

* With the presence of natural antioxidants and natural SPF, sesame keeps the skin protected from the sun’s UV rays as well as protects it from free radicals. Sesame has been traditionally used in several therapies worldwide for these properties.

To maintain a healthy mouth, the oral environment must be relatively neutral.

Scientists have identified a Chinese herb which may help prevent dental caries due to its antibacterial capacity and tooth mineralisation benefit.

Researchers, figured out the main active ingredient of Galla Chinensis, a natural herb, and further improved its anti- caries efficacy.

To maintain a healthy mouth, the oral environment must be relatively neutral. When the environment in the mouth becomes more acidic, dental cavities or other disorders may develop.

Galla Chinensis was revealed to inhibit the acid production of caries-associated bacteria as well as make teeth more resistant to acidic attack.

The researchers tested hundreds of Chinese herbs and identified that Galla Chinensis has a strong potential to prevent dental caries due to its antibacterial capacity and tooth mineralisation benefit.

Galla Chinensis also possesses substantial antiviral, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antidiarrheal and antioxidant activities, researchers said.

However, the main active ingredient of Galla Chinensis is unknown, which restricts the application in dentistry.

In the study, several Galla Chinensis extracts with different main ingredients were obtained and determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis.

The antibacterial capacity was determined using the polymicrobial biofilms model, which can generate reproducible plaque-like biofilms that occur in vivo.

The effect of inhibiting tooth demineralisation was tested using an in vitro pH-cycling regime, which mimicked the periodic pH change in mouth.

"Medium molecular weight gallotannins are the most active constituent in terms of caries prevention," said the lead author of the study.

In dental caries, significant reductions in caries prevalence and incidence have been made by the introduction of fluoride, researchers said.

However, it is not a total cure and there is still a need to seek products complementary to fluoride. With these new findings, the research team is working with the industry to develop new oral care products.

 What is Plaque?
Plaque (also known as dental biofilm) is formed as a result of substances gathering in our mouth after eating or drinking, appearing as a white or pale yellow "slime layer" between the teeth and along the cervical margins (the surface touching the gum). The substance consists of food debris, bacteria and bacterial waste, possibly leading to oral complications such as gingivitis and periodontitis.
Although the formation of plaque is normal for everyone and cannot be stopped, controlling it is one of the most important things in dental care. This is because plaque may become acidic, leading to the demineralisation of the teeth or tartar.

What is Tartar?
If plaque remains untreated, it can harden and turn into what is called tartar or calculus. It can form both along the gum line, and also within the narrow sulcus, found between the teeth and the gingiva. Tartar may be the cause of bad breath, receding gums and chronically-inflamed gingiva, as well as further formation of plaque.

When plaque becomes tartar, it becomes far more difficult to remove and would require clinical help. Tartar formation is not only connected to oral hygiene, but also tobacco use, drugs, age, diet, and genetics.
What can you do to treat and prevent plaque build-up?

There's a lot you can do prevent plaque from forming on your teeth and leading on to something more serious, such as tartar. To begin with, it is important to get your teeth checked regularly by a dentist to make sure your teeth and gums are in good shape. Secondly, we recommend that you try some of the best natural techniques that can rid your mouth from plaque in some simple steps. Here are some excellent methods that are tried and tested:

THE 8 NATURAL REMEDIES FOR PLAQUE:

1. Brushing with baking soda and salt
The combination of these two ingredients is one of the safest and most effective ways to help you eliminate plaque. Combine one tablespoon of baking soda and half a teaspoon of salt in a bowl. Dip a wet toothbrush into the mixture and brush your teeth with it. Repeat this for a couple of times every time to achieve great results.
 2. Munching apples
One of the solutions is in your very own dessert. Snacking on apples or melon just after a meal is one of the best natural ways of cleaning your teeth and gums from remaining bits of food, as well as eliminating plaque.
 3. Rubbing orange peel
Before brushing your teeth, grab a piece of orange peel and rub the inner (white) part against your teeth's surface  for about two minutes. Performing this ritual on a regular basis will not only render your teeth polished and whitened, but will prevent plaque build-up due to the vitamin C found in the orange peel.
 4. Using other fruit rich in Vitamin C
In addition to oranges, there are various other fruits that can do wonders for your dental health. Opt for Vitamin C-rich fruit, such as strawberries, to boost your immune system and help fight off oral infections. Take full advantage of their benefits by rubbing them against your teeth and consuming them.
 5. Scrubbing with sesame seeds
Sesame seeds may also help you get rid of plaque, due to properties that enable them to act as a great abrasive to clear and polish your teeth. Simply grind them against your teeth, then remove the leftover pieces using a dry toothbrush.
 6. Brush with coconut oil paste
Surprisingly, coconut is incredibly beneficial for your dental health. Protect your teeth from plaque by combining two tablespoons of virgin coconut oil and two tablespoons of baking soda in a bowl to make a paste. Then, use the paste as a natural toothpaste to reap the effective benefits. Feel free to also add any essential oil of your choice to the mixture (such as peppermint).
 7. Using aloe vera
Just as aloe vera is great for our skin, it's also perfect for soothing our teeth and gums. Studies have shown that aloe vera can improve plaque and periodontal conditions and maintain hygiene in our mouth. Simply apply some aloe vera to your toothbrush and use it as toothpaste.
 8. Rinse with hydrogen peroxide
The properties of hydrogen peroxide make it ideal to be used for oral health. Make a mouthwash consisting of three parts water (or prepared mouthwash) and one part 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Swish, gargle, and rinse well for one minute daily. This will act as an astringent and teeth whitener, as well as helping to remove plaque and loosen tartar.

Remember some other important tips:

  • Brush your teeth regularly and effectively: If you want to avoid plaque accumulation, take this as a rule of thumb. Use a soft-bristled brush and brush up and down, carefully reaching and brushing each tooth.

  • Visit your dentist regularly: Don't forget to get your teeth checked every so often.

  • Drink water: Water is a way of rinsing your mouth from food particles after eating a meal. Make sure you drink enough water each time.

  • Don't forget dental flossing: Use dental floss to clean the areas between your teeth at least once a day (although twice is ideal).

The findings detected the bacterial species Porphyromonas gingivalis in 12 per cent of tissues adjacent to the cancerous cells.
Researchers have found that a bacterial species responsible for gum disease is present in 61% of patients with esophageal cancer.

The findings detected the bacterial species Porphyromonas gingivalis in 12% of tissues adjacent to the cancerous cells, while this organism was undetected in normal esophageal tissue. "These findings provide the first direct evidence that P gingivalis infection could be a novel risk factor for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), and may also serve as a prognostic biomarker for this type of cancer," said Huizhi Wang from the University of Louisville's School of Dentistry in US.

"These data, if confirmed, indicate that eradication of a common oral pathogen may contribute to a reduction in the significant number of people suffering with ESCC," said Wang.

The esophagus, a muscular tube critical to the movement of food from the mouth to the stomach, is lined with two main kinds of cells, thus there are two main types of esophageal cancer - adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Researchers measured the expression of lysine-gingipain, an enzyme unique to P gingivalis, as well as the presence of the bacterial cell DNA within the esophageal tissues. Both the bacteria-distinguishing enzyme and its DNA were significantly higher in the cancerous tissue of ESCC patients than in surrounding tissue or normal control sites.

Researchers also found the presence of P gingivalis correlated with other factors, including cancer cell differentiation, metastasis and overall survival rate. According to the researchers, there are two likely explanations - either ESCC cells are a preferred niche for P gingivalis to thrive or the infection of P gingivalis facilitates the development of esophageal cancer.

If the first explanation is true, simple antibiotics may prove useful or researchers can develop other therapeutic approaches for esophageal cancer utilising genetic technology to target the P gingivalis and ultimately destroy the cancer cells, Wang said.

"Should P gingivalis prove to cause ESCC, the implications are enormous. It would suggest that improving oral hygiene may reduce ESCC risk; screening for P gingivalis in dental plaque may identify susceptible subjects; and using antibiotics or other anti-bacterial strategies may prevent ESCC progression," said Wang.

The findings were published in the journal Infectious Agents and Cancer.
