A Chinese herb may help fight tooth decay

Scientists have identified a Chinese herb which may help prevent dental caries due to its antibacterial capacity and tooth mineralisation benefit.

Researchers, figured out the main active ingredient of Galla Chinensis, a natural herb, and further improved its anti- caries efficacy.

To maintain a healthy mouth, the oral environment must be relatively neutral. When the environment in the mouth becomes more acidic, dental cavities or other disorders may develop.

Galla Chinensis was revealed to inhibit the acid production of caries-associated bacteria as well as make teeth more resistant to acidic attack.

The researchers tested hundreds of Chinese herbs and identified that Galla Chinensis has a strong potential to prevent dental caries due to its antibacterial capacity and tooth mineralisation benefit.

Galla Chinensis also possesses substantial antiviral, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antidiarrheal and antioxidant activities, researchers said.

However, the main active ingredient of Galla Chinensis is unknown, which restricts the application in dentistry.

In the study, several Galla Chinensis extracts with different main ingredients were obtained and determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis.

The antibacterial capacity was determined using the polymicrobial biofilms model, which can generate reproducible plaque-like biofilms that occur in vivo.

The effect of inhibiting tooth demineralisation was tested using an in vitro pH-cycling regime, which mimicked the periodic pH change in mouth.

"Medium molecular weight gallotannins are the most active constituent in terms of caries prevention," said the lead author of the study.

In dental caries, significant reductions in caries prevalence and incidence have been made by the introduction of fluoride, researchers said.

However, it is not a total cure and there is still a need to seek products complementary to fluoride. With these new findings, the research team is working with the industry to develop new oral care products.

 Here’s one more reason to make mangoes your favourite fruit. Did you know they have numerous compounds that have antioxidant properties? These include vitamin C and beta carotene, as well as several polyphenolic compounds including gallic acid and their larger polymers gallotannins, which have been linked to anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities in previous in-vitro and in-vivo studies.

The absorption, metabolism, and excretion of mango galloyl derivatives have not previously been investigated in humans. In this human pilot trial published in the journal of Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, 11 healthy volunteers between the ages of 21 and 38 years old consumed 400gm/day of mango-pulp for 10 days, with blood and urine samples taken on days one and 10 of the study following mango consumption.

 Participants refrained from consuming dietary supplements and foods which could be sources of gallic acid such as berries, grapes, and tea for one week prior to the beginning of the study and during the 10 days of mango consumption.

 Seven metabolites of gallic acid were identified in the urine of healthy volunteers, and of those two microbial metabolites were found to be significantly more excreted following 10 days of mango consumption. The presence of gallic acid and pyrogallol metabolites in human urine after the consumption 400g of mango indicates the absorption, metabolism, and excretion of mango galloyl derivative and confirms the bioavailability of these mango-derived metabolites. This study has been published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research.
