Correct food pairing for better digestion, as per Ayurveda

Avoid these food combinations
Even after taking all kinds of nutritious and clean food, if you often feel bloated and uneasy, then it is time to tweak your eating habits. Poor combination of foods can lead to indigestion, fermentation and gas formation. In some cases, it can even lead to severe stomach problems.

Ayurveda has laid down some ground rules related to the combination of food. Here are some important things you need to be careful about to ensure better digestion.

Fruits
Never eat raw fruits with any other fruit items as raw fruits break down more quickly. This can lead to fermentation, followed by indigestion. It is best to enjoy seasonal fruit alone. Also, be very careful while combining it with milk or yogurt. Combination of some fruits and dairy products can also make you feel bloated. Like you can have dates with milk, but avoid citrus fruits. There is no harm in combining fruits that have similar properties, like mixed berries, or apples with pears.

Dairy
Dairy products are well balanced and nutritious. It is good for health and bones. But when it comes to food, combining dairy can be a bad idea. You can use ghee with vegetables as it is similar to oil and is usually eaten in small amounts.

But when it comes to milk, Ayurveda says that it should be enjoyed alone to make it more digestible. You can add some spices like cardamom or cinnamon to enhance the digestibility.
Fresh yogurt and cheese should not be combined with fruit, beans, meat, fish, eggs, milk, or hot drinks.

Beans and lentils
Beans and lentils are known for making a person feel gassy and bloated. But this entirely depends on how well they are cooked. Well-cooked beans and lentils with spices like turmeric, black pepper or ginger, are good for your tummy. But be careful of what you eat with them. Pairing them with fruit, milk, cheese, eggs, yogurt, meat or fish can be harmful. It is best to have them with grains, vegetables, beans, nuts, and seeds.

Raw foods
Raw food often leads to stomach related problems as they are hard to digest. It is still alright in summer to have some raw food items as our stomach works well during the afternoon and can easily digest raw foods. But even if you are having them, do not combine them with cooked foods.

Researchers find way to make immunotherapy work for lymphoma

Researchers have developed a novel way to use immunotherapy drugs against lymphoma by combining them with stem cell transplantation.

The study, found that this new process is not only effective in lymphoma treatment but also increases the success of the drugs in melanoma and lung cancer.

This type of immunotherapy, called "checkpoint blockade", ramps up the ability of immune cells called T-cells to fight cancer by removing the "cloaking effect" that tumours use to hide from them.

Checkpoint blockade therapy is effective in several tumour types, but generally ineffective in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

The study's findings suggest that when this immunotherapy is combined with a stem cell transplant, which the researchers call "immunotransplant", the process ramps up the T cells to increase the cancer-killing immune response tenfold, allowing it to be effective for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and more successful for melanoma and lung cancer.

The transplant works by "making space" for re-infused immune cells (T cells) to proliferate by clearing out a patient's original immune system. While they are proliferating and building the immune system back up, they become activated, and the anti-tumour T cells' anti-cancer effect becomes stronger.

"Using immunotransplant to enhance the efficacy of checkpoint blockade therapy could be broadly significant as these immunotherapies are a standard therapy for melanoma, kidney cancer, lung cancer, and others," said the study's corresponding author .

"Even for settings in which checkpoint blockade therapy proves ineffective, our data suggest that its efficacy may be 'rescued' by immunotransplant. This research also suggests that the addition of checkpoint blockade may improve other T cell therapies, such as CAR-T therapy."

The findings have prompted the initiation of a clinical trial using the immunotransplant approach to treat patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

This immunotherapy combination shrinks rare, neuroendocrine

According to a new research, there is a significant clinical benefit for patients with high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma, which is the cancer of the neuroendocrine cells that often form tumours in the lungs and along the digestive tract too.

Even though, this cancer is rare, about 12,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with it, every year. But, do you know that the general prevalence of the disease grew six-fold between 1973 and 2012? Patients with the high-grade, or rapidly growing, form have tend to have only few treatment options.

“We saw a benefit in patients with high-grade carcinoma, which is the population that really needs an effective treatment option,” said a Dr. These early results are really encouraging and intriguing. We found a clear difference in response to treatment between the high-grade and low-grade forms of this cancer type,” said the Dr.”So tumour biology makes a difference. We don`t yet know why, but we`ve opened another treatment arm of the trial to patients with just high-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma to see if we find the same response to the immunotherapy combination,” the Dr. added.

DART features an innovative ‘basket’ design which allows the testing of a single drug or drug combination in a variety of tumour types. DART, currently tests the immunotherapy combination of ipilimumab and nivolumab in patients with 37 types of rare cancers, which together make up almost a quarter of all cancers diagnosed worldwide.

Researchers enrolled 33 patients with neuroendocrine tumours. Of those 33 patients, 19 had high-grade disease. Most patients’ tumours were located in the gastrointestinal tract or the lungs. All patients received doses of ipilimumab every six weeks and doses of nivolumab every two weeks and continue on the treatment for as long as their bodies respond to the drugs. Results showed that 42 per cent of patients with the high-grade form of neuroendocrine carcinomas saw their tumours shrink partially or completely after treatment, while none of the low-grade patients did. For all the patients, 70 per cent saw their cancer spread within six months.

Patients survived a median of at least 11 months after treatment. Some patients are alive more than a year after treatment, and doctors continue to track their progress.”There’s a myth that you can’t successfully complete clinical trials in rare cancers. Researchers think it’s too hard to find patients. But DART shows us that we can run rare cancer trials, and enroll patients quickly and learn if therapies are effective in rare diseases,” he said.”We can also offer investigational drugs to patients’ right in their communities. They don’t necessarily need to travel to a cancer centre to get enrolled in a clinical trial.”

Now, a ‘miracle pill’ for the treatment of high blood pressure

Researchers in the UK have found that combining four blood pressure drugs into a single pill could be twice as effective as existing treatments. The results of the small pilot trial were published in the Lancet medical journal.

In a breakthrough trial, every patient given the four-in-one ‘quadpill’ saw their blood pressure drop to healthy levels within a month. And because each drug is included in much lower doses than in conventional tablets, experts believe the combined medication will minimise side-effects.

High blood pressure -- or hypertension -- affects more than 17 million Britons, or one adult in three. The experiment could offer a new approach for the hundreds of thousands in the UK who take daily tablets for their blood pressure.

The condition vastly increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and vascular dementia but, because it has no symptoms often until it is too late, only half of people even know they are at risk.

Of those who have been diagnosed, hundreds of thousands take daily pills to control their blood pressure. But they normally take just one drug -- and only about half of patients see their blood pressure fall to a healthy level.

The new study saw a 100 per cent success rate. However, the researchers from the George Institute at Sydney University stressed that only 18 patients took part in the trial. Further research is needed to see if the results can be repeated, they said, but these initial findings are very exciting.

Study author Professor Clara Chow said: “Most people receive one medicine at a normal dose but that only controls blood pressure about half the time. In this small trial blood pressure control was achieved for everyone. Trials will now test whether this can be repeated and maintained long-term.”

The study involved giving patients a single capsule containing a quarter-dose of each of four common blood pressure drugs -- irbesartan, amlodipine, hydrochlorothiazide and atenolol.
Researchers believe reducing the dose of each drug minimises the risk of side-effects, which can include swollen ankles and kidney abnormalities.

Even though the dose of each drug was lower, combining them increased their impact.

Professor Chow said: “Minimising side-effects is important for long-term treatments -- we didn’t see any issues in this trial, as you would hope with very low-dose therapy, but this is the area where more long-term research is most needed.

This new research could be an important step in helping to reduce the burden of blood pressure disease globally. (Shutterstock )
“This could be an incredibly important step in helping to reduce the burden of disease globally.”

Professor Metin Avkiran, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “High blood pressure is a major risk factor for strokes and heart attacks.

“Although the findings are encouraging and may lead to effective treatments without side effects... more research is needed to confirm the safety of the quadpill, its long-term effect on blood pressure and ultimately whether it reduces a person’s risk of having a stroke or heart attack, before it should be considered in clinic.

“Since the majority of people with high blood pressure have no symptoms, a big part of the battle is identifying who has it. If you are concerned, we recommend speaking to your GP.”

Twice a day radiation therapy cuts down deaths from cancer

Radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy, cuts deaths by 20 percent compared to the standard treatment of once-daily radiotherapy with chemotherapy.

A study suggests that treating head and neck cancer patients with twice-a-day radiation therapy combined with chemotherapy can prove beneficial and save more lives.

The findings indicated that the twice-a-day treatment of hyper fractionated radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy, cuts deaths by 20 percent compared to the best standard treatment of once-daily radiotherapy with chemotherapy. The research was presented at the European Cancer Congress 2017 in Amsterdam.

The study was led by Dr Claire Petit, a resident in radiation oncology from Gustave Roussy cancer centre in Paris, included patients with tumours in their mouths, throats or voice boxes that had already begun to spread to neighbouring tissues."There are a number of new treatments that have shown promise in head and neck cancer trials.

This large study has enabled us to compare several of these treatments to see which is best overall in terms of reducing mortality," said Dr Petit."However, this is an important finding for this group of patients who have a higher risk of their cancer recurring following treatment," Dr Petit added. These patients tend to have lower rates of survival than those whose cancer was diagnosed at an earlier stage.

The researchers included 28,804 patients from around the world and allowed them to compare 16 different treatments to find out which was best at reducing the spread of cancer and deaths from the disease.Radiotherapy was done by splitting the daily treatment in two portions, a higher and more effective dose can be given to patients. The results also indicated that this this therapy reduced the risk of the cancer getting worse by 23 percent.

"Before we can apply these very interesting results into daily clinical practice, we need to wait for the outcome of the next stage of this research - namely the evaluation of the short and long-term side effects. This is of utmost importance for the quality of life of the patients and their relatives," said Professor Philip Poortmans from Radboud university medical center in the Netherlands.
