15 Common Cancer Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Hindsight can be perfectly harmless at times, and deadly at others. You might have forgotten about the toaster and burnt your bread, or perhaps you neglected homework and received a deduction. But when you neglect medical symptoms, especially those that foreshadow cancer, the repercussions can be far more serious.

The American Cancer Society estimates that so far in 2014, approximately 1.6 million new cases of cancer have been diagnosed in the US and nearly 600 thousand people have lost their lives to the disease. A late detection from overlooking symptoms can give the disease time to spread and become an irreversible burden. The symptoms are deceptive in the fact that they can be seemingly normal happenings. The following symptoms are inherently mundane things that you should pay attention to and consider looking into with a physician if they persist.

1. Bleeding In Between Periods (women only)

A bit of spotting in the gap of time where you aren’t normally having a period can be caused by a change in hormone levels, cervix inflammation, stress and blood thinners. It’s good to have a physician check for the likeliness of endometrial cancer in the uterus if the spotting happens more than once.

2. Bloating (women only)

About one in every ten people in the US experience bloating on a regular basis, and women are particularly susceptible to it. It’s a common ailment of dietary trends, indigestion, premenstrual syndrome and pregnancy, but a persistent bloating may be subject to concern. If your bloating lasts longer than two weeks or is paired with bleeding and weight loss, check with your doctor for your risk of ovarian cancer.

3. Changes in Your Testicles (men only)

If you notice a lump, swelling, pain or discomfort, with or without swelling or any other change in your testicle, go to see your doctor as it may indicate testicular cancer which can grow quite fast. Some doctors recommend that men ages 15 to 55 perform a monthly self-examination to identify any changes.

4. Problems When You Pee (men only)

Having an enlarged prostate gland is common among men as they get older and can cause some problems when peeing, such as the urge to pee more often, especially at night or trouble starting to pee or having a weak stream. But these can also be symptoms of prostate cancer. Visit your doctor to check the cause of the problem.

5. Breast changes

Breast cancer is one of the most common form of the disease in the world that affects both men and women. There are several evident signs that the American Cancer Society claim should be analyzed closely by a specialist, such as change in breast structure, appearance of lumps or changes in the skin or nipple. It is important to remember that these signs aren’t definitive proof of existing breast cancer. They can sometimes indicate smaller hormonal or health factors, so visiting an expert can clear any ambiguity.

6. Blood in Urine or Feces

Healthy digestion is important for a healthy life. If you’re uncomfortable during digestion and notice any redness in feces or urine, you should immediately seek medical attention. This is typically an indicator of onset colon or kidney cancer.

7. Mole Changes

Skin cancer is the most common form in the United States, with about one in every five Americans developing it sometime in their life. Women have been notably susceptible to several types of skin cancer, including the deadly melanoma. One of the most common indicators of onset skin cancer is the change in or appearance of moles. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using the ABDCE method of evaluating moles: asymmetry, border, color, diameter, and evolving.

8. Sudden Weight Loss Without Effort

We know this symptom seems like a godsend to some, considering the rising desire to become a skinny nation. But if you experience significant weight loss without any change in diet or physical exertion, you should be more concerned than relieved. There are again many different explanations for this, but a person shouldn’t rule out the possibility of pancreatic, lung or stomach cancer.

9. Ongoing Unexplained Pain

Pain can be a result of numerous conditions, but ongoing pain which is unexplained and lasts a month or longer can signal bone, brain, or other cancers. Ask your doctor about any suspicious prolonged and unexplained pain.

10. Unusual and Persistent Fatigue

It’s completely normal to feel worn down in a busy millennial society. But what about when you haven’t really done much with your day, and you still experience a persistent tiredness? If you have a reasonable diet and sleep routine and still experiences tiredness, you should consider the root of the problem and discuss it with a physician.

11. Difficulty Swallowing

Now and then people experience a swelling or dryness of the throat that makes it difficult to swallow, otherwise known as dysphagia. While it may seem like a minor inconvenience to some, it is also sometimes caused by cancer in the mouth, throat or esophagus. If you have trouble ingesting foods or liquids, especially if it’s a regular occurrence, you should be evaluated by a medical professional.

12. Coughing

This is probably one of the most mundane and diverse symptoms on the list. There are a ton of different reasons that people cough, and more often than not they are trivial and temporary in nature. It’s when the cough persists over the course of weeks that someone should voice concern. If you find yourself in pain or short of breath during the cough it could be serious. If you cough up blood, it is serious. Smokers should pay particular attention to coughing, as it’s the most typical sign of lung cancer.

13. Heartburn

For avid coffee drinkers and connoisseurs of spicy food, heartburn may be an all too familiar struggle. Other people struggle with acid reflux because of biological dispositions. But if you’ve tried to alleviate your heartburn with an altered routine and saw no results, you should locate the root of the problem. Heartburn can be an indicator of cancer in the ovaries, heart and esophagus. Studies show that persistent heartburn may actually raise your odds of throat cancer, so immediate attention is required.

14. Fever

Exhibiting a high temperature is a regular part of nearly everybody’s life at some point. Like many of the symptoms listed above, there could be multiple explanations for discomfort brought on by a fever. It’s when the fever refuses to go away or happens in severe conditions that you should voice concern. There are many different types of cancers that are foreshadowed with longstanding fever.

15. Changes in Lymph Nodes

The lymphatic system plays an important role in fighting infections and absorbing excess fluids, fats, and toxic waste material from your entire body. Some areas where lymph nodes commonly swell are in the neck, groin, and underarms. While common infections can cause lymph swelling, some cancers, including leukemia and lymphoma, can also cause this symptom.

See a Doctor Before You Worry

This list may seem a bit scary, but there’s no need to worry right off the bat. Each of these symptoms can be tied to far less serious ailments than cancer, so don’t stress yourself out until you’ve been thoroughly evaluated by a professional. With a disease so serious it helps to take the extra precautions when you feel skeptical of an above-mentioned symptom.

15 Cancer Symptoms to Know

Changes in Your Skin

A new spot on your skin or one that changes size, shape, or color could be a sign of skin cancer. Another is a spot that doesn't look the same as all the others on your body. If you have any unusual marks, have your doctor check your skin. She will do an exam and may remove a small piece (called a biopsy) to take a closer look for cancer cells.

Nagging Cough

If you don't smoke, there's very little chance a nagging cough is a sign of cancer. Usually, it's caused by postnasal drip, asthma, acid reflux, or an infection. But if yours doesn't go away or you cough up blood -- especially if you are a smoker -- see your doctor.  She may test mucus from your lungs or do a chest X-ray to check for lung cancer.

Breast Changes

Most breast changes are not cancer. It's still important, though, to tell your doctor about them and have her check them out. Let her know about any lumps, nipple changes or discharge, redness or thickening, or pain in your breasts. She'll do an exam and may suggest a mammogram, MRI, or maybe a biopsy.

Bloating

You may have a full, bloated feeling because of your diet or even stress. But if it doesn't get better or you also have fatigue, weight loss, or back pain, have it checked out. Constant bloating in women may be a sign of ovarian cancer. Your doctor can do a pelvic exam to look for the cause.

Problems When You Pee

Many men have urinary issues as they get older, like the need to go more often, leaks, or a weak stream. Usually, these are signs of an enlarged prostate, but they could also mean prostate cancer. See your doctor for an exam and maybe a special blood test called a PSA test.

Swollen Lymph Nodes

You have these small, bean-shaped glands in your neck, armpits, and other places in your body. When they're swollen, it often means you're fighting an infection like a cold or strep throat. Some cancers like lymphoma and leukemia can also cause this kind of swelling. Talk to your doctor to pinpoint the cause.

Blood When You Use the Bathroom

If you see blood in the toilet after you go, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor. Bloody stool is likely to come from swollen, inflamed veins called hemorrhoids, but there's a chance it could be colon cancer. Blood in your pee could be a problem like a urinary tract infection, but it may be kidney or bladder cancer.

Testicle Changes

If you notice a lump or swelling in your testicles, you need to see your doctor right away. A painless lump is the most common sign of testicular cancer. Sometimes though, a man may just have a heavy feeling in his lower belly or scrotum or think his testicles feel larger. Your doctor will do a physical exam of the area and may use an ultrasound scan to see if there is a tumor or another problem.

Trouble Swallowing

The common cold, acid reflux, or even some medicine can make it hard to swallow once in a while. If it doesn’t get better with time or with antacids, see your doctor. Trouble swallowing can also be a sign of cancer in your throat or the pipe between your mouth and stomach, called the esophagus. Your doctor will do an exam and some tests like a barium X-ray, in which you swallow a chalky fluid to show your throat more clearly on the image.

Unusual Vaginal Bleeding

Bleeding that's not part of your usual period can have many causes, like fibroids or even some types of birth control. But tell your doctor if you're bleeding between periods, after sex, or have bloody discharge. She'll want to rule out cancer of the uterus, cervix, or vagina. Be sure to let her know if you are bleeding after menopause. That's not normal and should be checked out right away.

Mouth Issues

From bad breath to canker sores, most changes in your mouth aren't serious. But if you have white or red patches or sores in your mouth that don't heal after a couple of weeks -- especially if you smoke -- see your doctor. It may be a sign of oral cancer. Other things to look for: a lump in your cheek, trouble moving your jaw, or mouth pain.

Weight Loss

Of course you can slim down when you change the way you eat or exercise. It can also happen if you have other issues, like stress or a thyroid problem. But it’s not normal to lose 10 pounds or more without trying. There's a chance it could be a first sign of cancer of the pancreas, stomach, esophagus, lung, or other type of cancer.

Fever

A fever isn't usually a bad thing. Sometimes it's just a sign that your body is fighting an infection. It can also be a side effect of some medicines. But one that won't go away and doesn't have an obvious cause could be a sign of a blood cancer like leukemia or lymphoma.

Heartburn or Indigestion

Almost everyone has this burning feeling sometimes, often because of their diet or stress. If lifestyle changes don't work and your indigestion doesn't stop, your doctor may want to do some tests to look for a cause. It could be a sign of stomach cancer.

Fatigue

A lot of things can make you very tired, and most of them aren’t serious. But fatigue is one early sign of some cancers, like leukemia. Some colon and stomach cancers can cause blood loss that you can't see, which can make you feel very tired. If you're wiped out all the time and rest doesn't help, talk to your doctor.

15 Cancer Symptoms Overlooked By Women

It’s a well-known fact that many cancer symptoms are similar to those associated with other disease and conditions, and that’s why they’re often overlooked until it’s too late. As a result, it’s important that women know their bodies as well as they can and remain aware of any changes they experience. Here are 15 cancer symptoms that women are likely to ignore:

1. Postmenopausal bleeding
Light spotting after going through menopause is quite a common occurrence in women. With that being said, if you experience period-like bleeding pain after going through menopause, and consistently so, it could be an early warning sign of uterine cancer. The good news that is a stage 1 diagnosis of uterine cancer that hasn’t spread has a five-year survival rate of 88%.
2. Breast dimpling, discoloration, or other changes
Women are told to look out for unusual lumps on their breasts as a tell-tale sign of breast cancer, however, there are other changes in the breasts that can signal cancer too. These include dimpled breast skin, an inverted nipple, swelling, tenderness or skin discoloration to a deeper red or pink. Although these signs aren’t necessarily indicative of cancer, they should definitely be followed up on with your doctor.
3. Bloating
Bloating is a common symptom that most women experience, especially during the menstrual cycle, but if the symptoms persist after it’s over, then it could be a sign of ovarian or uterine cancer. This symptom could also be coupled with a feeling of consistent constipation. If symptoms persist over the course of a few weeks, you must go to the doctor. Many ovarian cancer patients report vague symptoms such as these that they ignore for months before seeking help. Feeling full despite not having much of an appetite can also be a symptom of ovarian cancer.
4. Abnormal periods or pelvic pain
Irregular menstrual cycles are not uncommon in women, however, if your menstrual flow becomes heavier with each passing month, or you experience bleeding between cycles, you should ask your doctor for a transvaginal ultrasound to check for uterine, ovarian or other vaginal cancers. Pelvic pain can also be a symptom of these cancers.
5. Chronic coughing
Coughs that last three weeks or more that are not coupled with other symptoms, such as a stuffy nose or allergies, could be an early symptom of lung cancer. Leukemia can also cause bronchitis or chest cold-like symptoms. Coughing up blood is also a significant symptom that should never be overlooked. You should also know that some lung cancer patients report chest pain extending into the shoulder or down the arm.
6. Stomach pain or nausea
Persistent stomach cramps or sudden nausea that doesn’t get better should be checked by a doctor. Although it could be something as simple as an ulcer, it could also be a symptom of leukemia or esophageal, liver, pancreatic, or colorectal cancer.
7. Frequent fevers or infection
Getting sick or feverish more frequently than you normally would could be an early sign of leukemia, which is cancer of the blood. It triggers the body to produce abnormal white blood cells and saps its ability to fight infections by weakening the immune system. Flu-like symptoms, such as achiness and fever, should also be paid attention to.

8. Difficulty swallowing
Difficult or painful swallowing caused by a sore throat that persists over a few weeks is a common sign of throat or stomach cancer. It could even be an early sign of lung cancer.
9. Excessive bruising
Bruises that pop up all the time, especially in odd places like your hands and fingers, should raise an alarm. This is because they could be indicative of leukemia, which can impair the blood’s ability to carry oxygen and clot over time.
10. Unexplained weight loss
Weight loss that just occurs without a big life event, unforeseen problems or training can be a sign of many different cancers, namely esophageal, pancreatic, liver and colon, among others. It’s an especially common symptom of leukemia or lymphoma.
11. Persistent fatigue
Being low on energy is something that everyone experiences from time to time, but you should feel refreshed after one or two good nights’ sleep. If you’ve been tired every single day for more than a month or experience shortness of breath in instances when you didn’t before, be sure to visit your doctor. Most of the time, such symptoms are not indicative of cancer, however, leukemia and lymphoma are known to cause persistent fatigue.
12. Chronic headaches
If you don’t get migraines and suffering from headaches is unheard of to you, but begin to experience them all of a sudden, then it could be a sign of brain cancer. Head to your doctor.
13. Blood in the stool
Although blood in the stool is often caused by something benign, such as hemorrhoids, it could also be a sign of colon cancer.  What’s more is that people under 50 presenting with colon cancer are becoming much more common. Younger people tend to dismiss blood in the stool as being caused by hemorrhoids or constipation, especially if the problem comes and goes, but you should know that blood in a bowel movement is never normal.
14. Noticeable skin changes
cancer-symptoms-womenSkin cancer is quite simply the USA’s most common cancer, but it also happens to be one of the trickiest cancer to spot before it’s too late. We’re all aware of keeping an eye out for freckles, moles or dark age spots, but moles that become darker, larger or raised should also catch your attention. You should also know that melanoma is far less common than other skin cancers, but can be far more deadly. Nevertheless, you should be fine if it’s caught early.
15. Sores or pain in the mouth
Sores in the mouth that never seem to heal, or white or red patches on the gums or tongue, could be signs of oral cancer. This is also true for any swelling or numbness of the jaw. If these symptoms persist for longer than two weeks, then you must see a doctor.
