How to Treat Excess Stomach Gas & Bloating

A large percentage of the population suffers from stomach gas from time to time, yet it's rarely discussed, usually because we're too embarrassed to say we're feeling gassy. Nevertheless, stomach gas and bloating is becoming more prevalent due to modern food groups which encourage the build-up of gas in our system, causing a very uncomfortable feeling, and a lot of pain.
Causes of stomach gas build-up
Gas is mainly formed due to small fragmented stool as a result of eating a refined diet lacking in vegetable fiber. These fragmented stools remain in the colon for too long, allowing colonic bacteria to ferment them. On the other hand, a high fiber diet will produce bulky stool, causing very little gas to be formed.
Symptoms of stomach gas:
• Frequent passing of gas
• Feeling bloated
• Loss of appetite
• Abdomen feels 'tight'
• Belching
• Jabbing chest pain
• Getting rid of the excess stomach gas

1. Lie down or try a different position
Lie down and keep your head elevated as this position will cause the discomfort to pass in a few minutes. Remain in this position until the discomfort you're feeling is gone. You can lie down on your side, but still keep your head elevated.
If you are in distress, you can try to curl up so your head is touching the floor and your rear is in the air, this will encourage the passing of gas from your system.
Of course, when you are trying to push the gas out of your abdomen, make sure to do so on an empty stomach, or over a toilet.
2. Drink more
Having excess gas in your stomach is usually a sign of poor digestion. Drinking plenty of fluid helps move the undigested remnants of the food from the colon. This is especially true if you've eaten a lot of fiber rich foods, which encourage undigested food particles to accumulate in the colon. So drink up.
Hot liquids help the most, try herbal tea, but even coffee will help get that gas moving.
3. Add mustard
Mustard is said to decrease the amount of gas in the body as well as preventing its build-up, so try adding it to one of your daily meals.
4. Baking Soda
Add a spoonful of baking soda to a cup of hot water and mix well. Drink this every couple of hours for quick relief.
5. Add Indian spices
Turmeric, cumin and cardamom are known to aid good digestion.
6. Add ginger
Adding ginger to your food or chewing on the root will offer quick relief and aid your digestion.
7. Certain fruit can help
Drink lemon juice or other citrus fruit juices. The papaya is a wonderful fruit to eat when bloated, and is one of the best means for getting rid of gas quickly.
8. Avoid carbonated drinks
Consuming carbonated drinks is a big no-no if you want to decrease the amount of gas in the body. Drinking these will lead to an increase in gas and may also lead to chest pain.

Tips To Avoid excessive Burping

After eating a meal to your heart’s content, it is very normal to burp or belch. However, it is normal only when it happens occasionally, or after a meal, for someone used to a contented meal every single time. On the other hand, excessive burping or belching can happen due to two reasons.
  1. Excessive air intake: There are multiple ways that excessive air can reach the food pipe. Sucking on straws, chewing gum constantly and ill-fitting dentures are some common reasons for burping.
  2. Digestive problems: Ulcers in the stomach, prolonged gastric, gallstones and rarely, esophageal or stomach cancers can also cause burping.
When to see a doctor
Check with a doctor if you have persistent burping, followed by a meal or otherwise, and accompanied by the following symptoms.

  1. Nausea
  2. Bloody stools
  3. Abdominal pain
  4. Vomiting
  5. Weight loss
  6. Fever
Preventing belching
  1. Go slow when eating and/or drinking: Most of us are pressed for time and eating and/or drinking has now become a task that needs to be finished quickly. Eating fast causes air to be swallowed, and therefore one of the best ways to stop burping is to eat slowly. Sitting in a calm, relaxing environment when eating also allows one to enjoy the food and avoid or stop burping.
  2. Avoid talking while eating: There is always so much to catch up, whether at home or outside. So, talking while eating is a common practice. This is not just bad manners, but there is also a lot of air that is swallowed, which leads to burping. A solution is to chew the food properly, which not just helps stop burping, but also aids in better food digestion by mixing it adequately with saliva.
  3. Substitute carbonated drink with water: Carbonated drinks are another reason for belching. Replacing them with water, tea, or anything non-carbonated is advisable, not just from burping perspective, but also from the excessive sugar consumption. Carbonated drinks are just sugar solutions, and are absolutely of no nutritive value.
  4. Avoid straw: When possible, drink from a glass and avoid straws. This reduces the amount of gas taken in and helps stop burping
  5. Quit smoking: Quitting it has multiple health benefits, and getting rid of smoking is just one of them.
  6. Dentures: Ill-fitting dentures can be a reason for belching, and so they should be checked and corrected, if required, in a person who has persistent burping.
  7. Chewing gum: Constantly chewing gum contributes to burping, and so avoiding chewing gum or sucking on hard candy is another way to control burping.
  8. Avoid certain foods: Foodstuffs like broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, sprouts, and lentils can produce excessive gas and should be avoided in people who have persistent burping.
Follow the above steps in your daily routine; still if your burping problem persists, it is time to consult a physician.

Heartburn and Stomach Ulcer Remedies

You would never think of tomatoes as being bad for you, but they can, in fact, make things even worse for your ulcers. You'll truly be amazed at which other health foods you should avoid to prevent acid reflux from occurring. Before we discuss the 12 natural home remedies for stomach ulcers and heartburn, it's important to have a better understanding of the causes and symptoms between each disorder.

What are Stomach Ulcers?

Many people make the mistake of confusing peptic ulcers with heartburn, but they are far from alike, despite having similar symptoms. Ulcers consist of tiny open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach and small intestine areas, causing excruciating pains.

What Causes Stomach Ulcers?

Helicobacter pylori is the main bacteria infection that triggers stomach ulcers. Helicobacter pylori develops from certain medications, poor dietary lifestyle, and stomach acid buildup.

What Are the Symptoms Associated with Stomach Ulcers?

The most common symptoms attributed to ulcers are burning pains that begin at the top of your chest, eventually reaching your belly button area, and sharp pains that keep you awake at night. There are also pains that occur 2-3 hours after eating, which may provoke mild nausea. These pains generally go away after vomiting.

Foods and Beverages to Avoid with Stomach Ulcers:

  • Coffee - Coffee stimulates acid production and can cause severe indigestion problems.
  • Alcohol - Alcohol can irritate and erode the lining of the stomach and small intestine, triggering the ulcers.
  • Spicy Foods - Certain peppers found in dishes such as Mexican chili, can trigger heartburn in a flash. Avoid spicy foods as much as possible, since they simulate acid reflux buildup and gastrointestinal pains.
What is Heartburn?

Heartburn occurs when the stomach acid backs up from the esophagus, and eventually reaches your throat area. Heartburn is a very unpleasant burning sensation that can truly leave a bad taste in your mouth. Nearly 1 out of every 5 Americans suffers from it.

What Causes Heartburn?

The common cause of heartburn is a lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, that doesn't contract regularly. Unhealthy foods play a major contributor of heartburn, especially foods that are deep fried or cooked in grease. Overeating can also cause acid reflux buildup due to the excess amount of pressure on the stomach.

What Are the Symptoms of Heartburn?

Symptoms of heartburn or acid reflux, include a dry cough, a sore throat that causes difficulty swallowing, an increased burning sensation after digestion and tasting acid or food in the back of your mouth. These symptoms intensify the moment you lay down.

Foods and Beverages to Avoid with Acid Reflux:

  • Citrus Fruits - Citrus fruits might be ideal for the common cold, but the acidity inside can cause heartburn, particularly on an empty stomach.
  • Garlic and Onions - Although both vegetables are essential for a healthy dietary intake, they also wreck havoc on people suffering from heartburn.
  • Carbonated Beverages - Carbonated beverages cause gastric distension, leading to acid reflux and indigestion. It's best to stay away from sodas, and just drink mineral water instead.
5 Natural Treatments for Heartburn

1) Eating a Healthy Diet - There are many foods that are extremely good for you, but bad for your heartburn. Some of these foods include; ground beef, sour cream, cottage cheese, onions, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. Make sure you avoid fried and greasy foods to prevent heartburn from occurring. Drink plenty of water in between meals and skip the carbonated beverages altogether.

2) Enzymes and Probiotics - Probiotics are often referred to as the “good bacteria”, since they promote healthy digestion. Probiotics minimize the growth of harmful bacteria, and boost the immune system. Probiotics are available in supplement form, and help combat acid reflux. It's recommended to take a hydrochloric acid or HCI enzyme supplement along with probiotics for smooth digestion.

3) Aloe Vera Juice - Aloe vera juice has been known to treat acid reflux and other medical symptoms. It's advisable to drink 1/4 cup of aloe vera approximately 20 minutes before a meal or whenever you experience acid reflux issues. You can even mix the aloe vera with tea or water if you don't like the basic taste of it. Do not drink aloe vera juice if you have diabetes, kidney failure or thyroid disease. Pregnant women and children should also avoid it.

4) Apple Cider Vinegar  - Apple cider vinegar is used to treat stomach acid buildup, as ironic as it sounds. The cider helps digestion by breaking down fats, despite the acidity factors. It is recommended to mix one or two teaspoons of the apple cider vinegar with a glass of water. Drink a glass of the cider before meals or when you feel a reflux attack coming on.

5) Baking Soda - A little baking soda is all it takes to reduce your acid reflux problems. You may not appreciate the bland taste, but you'll feel much better afterward. Mix a half or a full teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of water.

Natural Treatments for Stomach Ulcers
1) Cabbage Juice - Cabbage is packed with an abundance of natural anti-oxidant properties that help prevent stomach ulcers. Cabbage contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, E, K and folate, all essential for treating acid reflux and fighting cancer.

2) Zinc Carnosine - Zinc-Carnosine is used to treat stomach ulcers and other gastrointestinal problems. The function of the Zinc-Carnosine is to repair damaged tissues and heal ulcer wounds.

Recommended Dosage: Use for 8 weeks, with a daily dose of 75mg in divided doses.

3) Probiotics - Probiotics improve intestinal functions and help fend off Helicobacter pylori. They are also used to prevent other gastric disorders, such as diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease, from occurring.

Recommended Dosage: Take a probiotic of 1 to 2 million CFUs daily.

4) Glutamine - Glutamine significantly reduces the amount of inflammation brought on by a Helicobacter pylori infection. Glutamine supplements can be purchased at any local health store.

Recommended Dosage: Take 2 grams of glutamine daily for stomach ulcers.

5) Ginger Root - Ginger limits the harmful helicobacter pylori from acting up. Add several slices of fresh ginger roots to hot water, and drink the ginger mixture approximately 20 minutes or so before each meal for a quick soothing remedy.

6) Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice Powder (DGL) - DGL can work wonders for peptic ulcers. They protect the inner lining of your small intestine and stomach.

Recommended Dosage: Suggested dose is 200 to 400 mg daily dissolved in 200 ml warm water.

7) Astaxanthin - These powerful antioxidants help protect the gastrointestinal or GI tract and reduce symptoms of acid reflux. The free radical scavenging activity of astaxanthin also combats against Helicobacter pylori bacterial infection.

Recommended Dosage: Suggested daily dose is 40 mg.

How to Prepare an Anti Reflux Smoothie:

  • 1 cup diced fresh pineapple
  • 1 cup diced fresh papaya
  • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup ice
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice or water
  • Mix all in a blender and drink.

How to Keep Your Bones Strong

The base on which our whole body is built is the skeleton,  from which we get our stability, our ability to move and  function. Our bones are also a factory for manufacturing red  and white blood cells. It's extremely important to keep  bones strong and healthy, especially in more advanced ages,
when calcium seems to drain away.

  A little about bone depletion:

Bone depletion, or osteoporosis, is a disease that occurs as  a result of dwindling bone mass and a decrease in the levels  of calcium. Along our whole life, our bones are in a  continuous process of construction and destruction. However,  at a young age, there is more construction than destruction.
Things even out as we grow older until, in our fourth decade, destruction finally overtakes construction. As a  result, our bone density drops and our bones become more prone to fractures. When this process happens in an extreme way, it is known as bone depletion. It's important to note that losing calcium also makes the bones more  sensitive, even if it happens slowly. At an older age, when our balance is not what it used to be, the danger only gets worse.

Because women start with a bone density that is already  about 30% less than men, and because they produce less  estrogen as they grow older, they must face a bigger risk when it comes to bone depletion.

What is the recommended calcium amount?
The process of bone depletion in the body is a natural one  and cannot be prevented. But it can be minimized in volume  and influence, by maintaining our bones and building bone mass through correct nutrition.

The daily calcium amount recommended for the general  population is 1000 mg a day. For adults it is 1200-1500 mg a day. In addition, vitamin D is also important, as it helps the calcium absorb in the body. So if you want to keep your bones strong, you should also consume vitamin D rich foods. You can get it from the sun or from food, but it's  important to have.

10 Tips to Keep Our Bones Strong

  1. Consume milk products - Every child knows that milk is  rich in calcium and is essential for strengthening bones.  This goes for all milk products, including cheese, yogurt and alike. If you don't like cow's milk, try soy milk enriched with calcium.

 2. Add nuts to your diet - Although milk has the highest  ratio of calcium to volume, it is not the only source. Some nuts and seeds have handsome amounts of calcium. A 30 gram course of almonds contains 75mg of calcium, 30 grams of sesame seeds contains 37mg of calcium and sunflower seeds
 have 33mg of calcium.

 3. Eat dark green vegetables - Broccoli, Chinese cabbage,  arugula, parsley, lettuce and others are excellent sources of calcium, and contain many additional health advantages.  This will help you to also diversify your sources of calcium, which is important to maintain your health.

 4. Take the right Vitamin A - Vitamin A appears in two  forms. The first is retinol, which appears in animal products, such as the liver. The second is beta carotene and it is the way the vitamin comes from plants, especially orange vegetables like carrot, squash or sweet potato. Studies have found that consuming too much of retinol vitamin A raises the risk of bone fraction, while vitamin A in its plant form, Beta Carotene, does not damage the bones.

 5. Strengthen your bones with Vitamin K - This vitamin helps activate 3 essential proteins that are crucial for bone health. As in the case of calcium that comes from green vegetables, vitamin K also comes from the same sources. Two daily helpings of green vegetables a day give the body as
 much as it needs.

 6. Physical activity strengthens the bones - Sorry, you knew  this was coming and its of very little surprise. When we carry out a physical activity, we create pressure on our  skeleton. While it is bad to overdo it, a moderate pressure is actually very health, as it sends the body signals to create more bone cells, increase the density and make it  stronger. Operate the body with moderation, and don't go
to far with it.

 7. Eat fish - 100 grams of sardines contain an amazing  amount of over 400mg of calcium! It's recommended to consume the fresh fish of course and not the canned variety.  The little bones are also edible and contain a lot of calcium. Sardines, like the salmon, are also a great source of
vitamin D.

 8. Reduce your consumption of carbonated drinks and treats -  The acid that exists in some of the popular carbonated  drinks raises the amount of acid in the blood. To  compensate, the body uses the body's minerals, including  calcium. If the calcium is not readily available in the  blood, the body will take it from the bones and this will lessen the density and strength of the bone. There is no  problem drinking them once in a while, but if they are a  daily habit then you can do a lot of damage to your bones  over time.

 9. Avoidance measures - Like a lot of other health problems,  we return to smoking. Studies have shown that smoking harms bone density, as well as over consumption of alcohol and  caffeine.

 10. Resource allocation - We must carry out our calcium  consumption in a smart way. Our body absorbs calcium best when it is no more than 500mg at one time. So, if you are  planning on consuming a large amount of calcium rich foods or drinks, try to perhaps divide the meal or eat again
later, to make sure the body is able to absorb all you are  giving it.

A large percentage of the population suffers from stomach gas from time to time, yet it is rarely discussed, usually because we're too embarassed to say we're gassy. But folks, we all are sometimes, and there's absolutely no reason to be ashamed of it. It is a very uncomfortable feeling, and can cause real pain.

This is a problem that is becoming more prevalent due to modern food groups which encrouage the build-up of gas in our system. But there are easy way to fix this in your own home.

Causes of stomach gas build-up

- The main cause is poor digestion, meaning some undigested food remains in our colon and get fermented by the bacteria that live there. This process releases gas that builds up in our abdomen. Unfortunately, the most healthy and fiber rich foods are the ones hardest to digest, and so will often lead to gas build-up.

- Intolerance to certain types of food can also cause this effect.

- Constipation will often lead to excess gas.

Symptoms of stomach gas:

- Frequent passing of gas
- Feeling as if bloated
- Loss of appetite
- Abdomen feels 'tight'
- Belching
- Jabbing chest pain

Getting rid of the excess stomach gas

1. Lie Down or try different positions

Lie down and keep your head elevated, this position will help pass the discomfort you are feeling in a few minutes. Remain in this position until the discomfort you're feeling is gone. You can lie down on your side, but still keeping the head elevated.

If you are in distress, another position you can take is kneels on your head with your rear in the end, this will encourage the passing of gas from your system.

When you are trying to push the gas out of your abdomen, make sure to do so on an empty stomach or over a toilet.

2. Drink more

Having excess gas in your stomach is usually a sign of poor digestion, drinking plenty of fluid helps moving the undigested remnants of the food from the colon. This is especially true when we eat a lot of fiber rich food, when the undigested food particles accumulate in the colon. So drink up.

Hot liquids help the most, try herbal tea, but even coffee will help get that gas along.

mustard3. Add mustard

Mustard is said to decrease the amount of gas in the body as well as preventing its build-up, so try and add it to one of your daily meals.

4. Baking Soda

Aid a spoonful of baking soda to a cup of hot water and mix well. Drink this every couple of hours for quick relief.

5. Add Indian spices

Turmeric, cumin and cardamom are known to aid good digestion.

6. Add ginger

Adding ginger to your food or chew on the root will offer quick relief and aid your digestion.
